A few pro tips for growing on dehydrator mats: #1. If you're growing smaller seeds all you need to do is double the mats to keep them from falling through. It's that simple. #2. Adding food grade Epsom salt to the water boosts germination and growth. Ratio is 1 tablespoon to 1 gallon of water. #3. The best way to prevent fungus and mold is before it starts. For the first spraying of the seed use a combination of food grade hydrogen peroxide 3% and water. Ratio is 1z FGHP to 20oz water. Best to just keep it in a separate spray bottle for the initial spray. After that just spray with regular - preferably distilled - water.
Great Video! "For the smallest seeds use a 27x25 thread count per inch dehydrator screen" (according to Brent from "Hydroponic Gardening and More with Brent" ) also on RUclips... He uses a 15 x11 thread count per inch screen for most seeds (esp Brassicas) ... but the 27x25 for lettuces, amaranth, mustard ect... Glad to have found a solution for a reusable medium! Thanks for showing how easy it is to clean... God bless!
Looking at timestamp 3:30, the roots are a mix of normal white and fuzzy white. The fuzzy roots are air roots - air roots pull oxygen from the air. I do both sprouts and microgreens and have thought for a while that maybe a hybrid approach would work well. (I am new at indoor growing.) And that is exactly what you did. You treated it like sprouts for the first four days (typically, rinse two or three times a day), then treated it like microgreens. Bravo times ten. Wish I could give it a hundred thumbs up. I think if I had very small seeds, I would put a layer of cheesecloth on top of the dehydrator screen. I would have to sacrifice that after one grow, but most seeds wouldn't need it. Question: do you use 3% hydrogen peroxide? Have you tried 12%? I would love more videos growing on screen for sure.

Congrats on hitting the 50K mark! Your videos have taught me a lot and motivated me to experiment. I have been experimenting with those Amazon trays and using screens on them. Sango Radish seeds seem to be large enough to grow directly on the white mesh tray with no intermediate medium. FWIW: I have used those exact trays for a few months now, and I don't put any where near that much water (I water twice a day) in the bottom and I don't use H202. The only time I've had trouble with mold is when I try to get more than one harvest from one planting. Exception: one other time I had cilantro in Coco Coir that I think I kept waaay too wet, because I did get mold that time as well.
Thank you for sharing! Yeah, it seems like there are about 8 different varieties of these same trays that all have different dimensions. That’s the issue with so many people importing and selling from different random manufacturers... If you roots can make it down into the reservior, there is no need for so much water! But as you can see in our situation, all the roots weren’t reaching, so we had to get the water to touch the medium otherwise the crop would dry out... We are still practicing with them :) Thanks again for sharing!

Are reusable mats really worth the extra labor/time? Seems to me that it takes far longer in labor than say $.50 cents in media like coir or potting soil to have to clean them.....asuming you do a good job of keeping such media off your sprouts and then not have to spend time cleaning them. Plus composting the root systems is also useful and not entirely a waste of money. Coir or the like could even be more cost effective if such compost is used to grow other things in a garden.....

Hi, may I know which video has the info about spot treating mold issue during growth? I watched plenty of your videos from time to time but sorry currently I don't have the time to go thru all to find out. I would like to find out about this asap.
Thank you so much for your video growing on the dehydrator mat, I was very curious about that. But, I have a question. I saw someone on RUclips growing on a stainless steel screen, and when he harvested the micros, he pulled up everything right through the screen, roots and all. So, is that a safe practice to eat the roots too? Thank you for your reply
Would it help with a mat clean up if before you pull the mat out of the tray you ran your knife along the back and cut off some of those roots to where at least they would be shorter to pull out of the mat.
that is an awesome idea, i see the screens are $18 for 10 on amazon right now so cheaper than potting soil i guess. how many times do you think you can reuse one? thanks
Is it possible for the greens to grow in natural, in-the-window-sill light, or do they require grow lights? They would get about 11 hours lights. Thank you for your videos!!
I am getting black stains on dehydrator mats - I wash in soapy water then rinse then spray with peroxide for 10 minutes - stains still there but I guess it won’t hurt anything just looks bad?
It's been 6mo since this video was published. Are you still using this dehydrator mats? Are they still working well for you? I love the channel and your videos. I'm looking to get into growing microgreens, but I want to start off with a sustainable solution.

Any tips for possible mold identification? When germinating I get these little snowball looking mold spots on some seeds and the spent seed hulls, any advice?
K Baker....We were dealing with mold for over 1 year. We tried EVERYTHING! Then I purchased an Ozo-Pod 10 from Roving Blue - produces ozone from water - not air. Set to a timer, we now have ozone available anytime.....and.....no mold! You need the test kit to get the ozone solution down.....but it is all quite simple. Improves germination and growth rate. It also enabled us to secure a wheatgrass account and the wheatgrass juice tastes just great! We eat the wheatgrass raw throughout the day and it too taste great (at 3-4"). We surely threw out close to a 1000 flats of wheatgrass trying to find a solution and we found it.....so simple!
@@cwn03 wow.... super interesting. We're going to have to look at that. Are you creating a reservoir of water with the Ozo-Pod 10, then using that to water with? Do you have to use it immediately after producing the ozone?
@@OnTheGrow @On The Grow Yes....our ozone rez (15 gals) is separate from our nute rez.....we switch back and forth as needed - we are still learning. The timer maintains the desired ozone level. There is a time frame to use up the ozone solution. Believe me, there is nothing complicated about it. The OzoPod & test kit run about $240 - that's the hard part - but for us - it's like winning the lotto with the wheatgrass account we were able to secure.

I really need a portable sprayer like the one you're using. Can you tell me where you got the entire contraption along with the sprayer. Thx, thx, thx.
As I read in a comment below, once the roots are into the mesh, you can reverse it and clean the hulls, so the risks of moisture are greatly dinished. And after your harvest, you can put the roots aside, rinse them and eat the raw or as a green smoothie, so it's zero waste. Roots are as good as the rest, what do you think of that?

Love the video, all of them, really. You guys have really helped! Myb question: I purchased these greeen trays but I do not have extra lids to use during the black out time to weigh down and later to invert as a dome. Any thoughts on what I could use. The trays I bought are two parts, the white meshy part and one green bottom, so nothing to make the black out and later the "dome" out of. Thoughts?
Which dehydrator May would you recommend for brocali seeds can you link it or just name the product? I’m looking on Amazon right now and they all look to big the holes !! Thanks
Put them in a very dark closet! or turn over another type of container on top, just making sure it is dark and there is some airflow to help prevent mold.
Thank you!! The Dehydrator mat doesn't retain any water, and allows the roots to pass through very easily, whereas the micro mat retains a lot of water, yet the roots can't really get through...

I know lots in the food dehydrator community use plastic canvas and I'm pretty sure they contacted the company and they said it's food grade safe.

I’ve tried the dehydrator mats, first time didn’t do well. Second time they are growing but when I uncovered them there us a horrible smell! Any idea why? I think I will go with another medium. Great channel! 👍👍🌺

Hello.
I like very much your videos.
I would like to know what are your top 5 growing mediums for personal / family growers of microgreens.
Better or worse than the steel ones? You guys probably already did a video on that. ;D
Love it!

White 'mold' is natural, so not an issue. Don't cut until the time of eating! Keeps protein content high and a 'live' food.
Great video! Can you share where did you get the pressure sprayer and the nozzle? Thanks.
that is an awesome idea, i see the screens are $18 for 10 on amazon right now so cheaper than potting soil i guess. how many times do you think you can reuse one? thanks
is there less mold with stainless steel screens?
As usual, great job guys thanks for the info and inspiration.. gunna give it a try... Also do they ship your shirts to Australia?.. Cheers
Hello can you place a napkin to wick under?
Hey I love your videos! Helped me a lot. I'd really appreciate if you can make a video on Hydrogen peroxide mix to fight mould. 😋
We use 2TBSP H2O2 per liter of water, super easy to make! Make it stronger or more mild as needed!
@@OnTheGrow Thanks!!
@@OnTheGrow 3% H2O2?
Yes! Some people use 12% or 35% but they can burn the skin so we stick to 3% food-grade

I wonder if it would be easier to clean the mats if you let it dry first?
Is it possible for the greens to grow in natural, in-the-window-sill light, or do they require grow lights? They would get about 11 hours lights. Thank you for your videos!!
Would love to know where you got knife
I am getting black stains on dehydrator mats - I wash in soapy water then rinse then spray with peroxide for 10 minutes - stains still there but I guess it won’t hurt anything just looks bad?
It's been 6mo since this video was published. Are you still using this dehydrator mats? Are they still working well for you?
I love the channel and your videos. I'm looking to get into growing microgreens, but I want to start off with a sustainable solution.

Any tips for possible mold identification? When germinating I get these little snowball looking mold spots on some seeds and the spent seed hulls, any advice?
A little white mold is quite common and we are working on a blog post to help identify mold and how to handle it!

I would think cheesecloth would work, too?
I really need a portable sprayer like the one you're using. Can you tell me where you got the entire contraption along with the sprayer. Thx, thx, thx.
What is the brand of sprayer that you are using? It looks so much easier than the ones with the long wands.

What is you go to growing medium rn ? Also , I live in a humid and hot climate area, can I use just coco peat /coco coir as my growing medium?
Love the video, all of them, really. You guys have really helped! Myb question: I purchased these greeen trays but I do not have extra lids to use during the black out time to weigh down and later to invert as a dome. Any thoughts on what I could use. The trays I bought are two parts, the white meshy part and one green bottom, so nothing to make the black out and later the "dome" out of. Thoughts?
Which dehydrator May would you recommend for brocali seeds can you link it or just name the product? I’m looking on Amazon right now and they all look to big the holes !! Thanks
Put them in a very dark closet! or turn over another type of container on top, just making sure it is dark and there is some airflow to help prevent mold.
what is the differences between dehydrator mat and micro mat? and congratulations too for 50k 👍
Thank you!! The Dehydrator mat doesn't retain any water, and allows the roots to pass through very easily, whereas the micro mat retains a lot of water, yet the roots can't really get through...
