TOOL - WINGS FOR MARIE - Pt. 1 & 2 - 10,000 Days - Reaction and Commentary!!!

- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2024
- This video breaks down the lyrics of the songs Wings for Marie pt. 1, and 10,000 Days (Wings pt. 2) from Tool, first released in 2006 off of the Album 10,000 Days.
10,000 days refers to the number of days Judith Marie Keenan lived after a paralyzing stroke in 1976 until the time of her death in 2003. Additionally, 10,000 days is the amount of time it takes Saturn to revolve around the sun.
In an interview, Maynard James Keenan (lead singer of TOOL) stated, "I think probably the stupidest thing I could have done on 10,000 Days was put myself out there as much as I did with the tracks 'Wings for Marie (Part 1)' and '10,000 Days (Wings Part 2),'" he explained. "I'll never make that mistake again. It just took too much out of me - too much emotionally, mentally, physically - all those manifestations. Those songs were exploited and misconstrued, people were flippant and dismissive. I won't be doing that anymore. And technically, 'Wings' is very difficult to pull off. If any one of us is off, it falls apart and makes that thing tragic, and that's not a good song for me to have fall apart. It's just too personal."

Saw this live. Maynard hushed the crowd twice before they would start the song. Asked the crowd to put down the phones and lighters and go on this journey with him. Incredible live!
wow....i bet it was amazing.
They allowed phones out back then??
When I saw it on the '97 tour (maybe 98?)... I saw them in Vancouver, Canada
When he was introducing it, the audience cheered and clapped... Maynard said "ya, I usually applaud and cheer for songs about another persons death"
He also scolded the crowd for being rude to the opening band.
@@devanhammack695 couldn't have been. This was on the Vicarious album, which was released in 2006. I do that all the time though, been to too many shows and get them all messed up lol
@@nogo1880
Lol right.. just have been the shows I saw in San Diego.
I have seen them over 10 times, so yeah..
Dumb mistake on me part
This is the greatest eulogy ever written in my opinion
This song is a gift from Maynard for everyone who ever lost a loved one.
He regretted writing it because it took such an emotional toll playing it live. Not because of fans and critics, that’s not why he does this
A true masterpiece. When the bass comes in during 10,000 days. Goosebumps everytime.
...GIVEEEE MEEE MYYYYY WINGGGGGSSSS... is what does it to me EVERY TIME ..I sit here crying ..today is my deceased mother's birthday..one day before mother's day this is such a poingient song !
Me, too!
I don’t trust anyone not affected by this song. Well done sir.
One of the most powerful songs ever written.... Maynard is a lyrical genius
I just released a reaction to APC, The Doomed. I am not sure if it is seen. RUclips is acting crazy. As for Wings 1 and 2, i agree. These are more powerful than any other song I have heard. Unbelievably personal, open and honest.
Maynard James Keenan......
The greatest poet of our generation.......
Indeed...
And it ain't even close
I saw this live in 2006, it was complete silence in the audience. Beautiful, nobody said anything until the next song.
Me too. So powerful.
@@rubaidaallen2764 Me as well, in 2006. It was beautiful and people were speechless,
To know the back story to this and not show emotions is not possible unless you are a psycopath... i cant listen to this without crying
Me too. I have to be by myself to listen to it because I cry every time. I'm actually wiping tears as I type this.
There's also some stuff I don't think a lot of people realize about Wings Part 2. "None of us have actually been there... Not like you" is an echo of the A Perfect Circle song "Judith" where he says "It's not like you killed someone. It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side." To me, echoing the "not like you.." has significance. Secondly, "This little light of mine, a gift you passed onto me" is referring to the song "Jimmy", where he's also dealing with his mothers stroke/aneurysm. "Home" being held out is a setpeice in both Jimmy and this song. In Jimmy, her light is what he used to guide himself (and his 11 year old, traumatized self) to reconciliation. Now he's metaphorically using this light to lead his mother to heaven. It's a beautiful full-circle type of poetic journey that music very rarely attempts.
Thanks for that!
I would even dare to venture that it is... A Perfect Circle of poetic journey.
I’d literally have no problem with someone saying this is the greatest song ever written. I’m no authority, just a 46 yr old music fan who has been listening to Tool since day 1. Amazing.
My mom has passed a few weeks ago and since then, this song is hitting hard. The part where he says 10000 days on the fire is long enough, you're going home. Makes me cry every single time now.
@@thebendu33 so sorry to hear that. I always think about if this song will help me when my mom does pass. It may be too hard like you’re saying. That part is amazing. I get chills everytime during that part, snd when he sings “give me my, give me my WINGSSSS” I tear up. Stay strong. May your mom Rest in Peace. 💔
@@robriginio530 thanks man, and I agree, this is one of the greatest song ever written.
I had no idea that critics/fans/whatever didn’t appreciate this song(s). I don’t pay attention to that kind of stuff.
Wings is not only my FAVORITE Tool song but, imo, it’s one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Of ANY genre. It allows you to feel every aspect, every layer, of loss: the grief, the sadness, the rage, the injustice of it all… individually and all at once. I thank the universe that Maynard wrote it and released it. It’s genius. The most gorgeous and haunting requiem EVER.
I’m utterly shocked that people didn’t originally appreciate it. Shocked.
I mean… c’mon. “High is the way but all eyes are upon the ground”
and “I only pray heaven knows when to lift you out”…. If those words don’t invoke something in a person… I just don’t know wtf to say. And if the first few minutes don’t get ya… the “give me my wings” sure as hell should.
I simply cannot FATHOM the notion that anyone would have EVER not appreciated this song. Crazy.
Tool Does. Not. Have. A. Bad. Song. Even so, this is my all time favorite.
Great back story to the song you gave. I highly Recommend going back to the Aenima Album and Listening to the song “Jimmy”
The song Jimmy is Maynard recalling how he felt at 11 years old when his mother had her health issues and was paralyzed. The way the song bounce between his perspective his mother’s perspective, and almost like there is a therapist leading the conversation. Beautiful written and under appreciated.
I'm ashamed to say as a serious Tool fan that I didn't know the backstory to this song. I'm stunned...just an amazing experience to really appreciate a song that I love and that I've heard a thousand times but didn't fully understand. Just wow.
Same here. I did not give this song the respect it deserved.
Pair this with the song Jimmy. Jimmy is about him experiencing this with his mothers stroke when he was 11 years old
It’s OK to be emotional. Feel free to be real, friend. The song hits hard on many levels for many reasons for different people.
Justin’s hypnotic insane base
Adams wailing crying guitar
Danny, well he’s doing Danny
Maynard’s unbelievable lyrics
Masterpiece
I'd put this song as Justin's best bass line. When it comes in after thr first "give me my wings.." perfection.
Bass*😊
Thank you for not stopping this song every 30 seconds to inject yourself into it like every other guy with a webcam on here doing this masterpiece. I can't listen to this without getting choked up anymore.
Thank you for watching. It is difficult and somewhat disrespectful to do that to this song. So I wanted to simply let it play as much as I can and comment between part 1 and 2. If you have not, please check out the Tool reaction playlist i put together. It is best to sort by "Date Added (oldest)" and start at Aenema. I put it together deliberately. Wonderful reaction. Thanks for taking us on this journey with you.
I knew this song was special to Maynard when the album came out. I was 18 years old at the time. Putting on my best headphones and went on the ride. That first listen will be forever ingrained in my memory.
Such a cathartic letter from a son to his passed, faithful mother. 💞
Sir, this is no doubt the most honest and affecting reaction I have come across, thank you!
Thank you for that.
Judith is another song he did outside of Tool about his mother's death. 10,000 days is how long she spent in a wheelchair.
She died 3 years after they released Judith. It's not about her death. It's his angry questioning of her faith and how she can continue to believe when she was dealt such a bad hand in life.
It's hard not to be emotional for this. I loved that you embraced that frail yet strong aspect of who you are. To me, those emotions and tears are beautiful.
Hope you grow in your way, and come back to this place. It'll come for us all.
Your's is the most respectfull reaction I have seen in youtube. Thanks for that
This one and APC- Orestes always bring me to my knees, just pure raw emotion!! Full body chill bumps always!
It was during his time in the military that he adopted the sobriquet "Maynard", based on a fictional character he had created in high school.
I'm a simple man. I see a really well done Tool reaction then I up vote and subscribe. Nice job!
Thank you!
In 2006 you were not ready for this song. When the time came, this song found you.
You are so correct. It was worth the wait.
These 2 songs are super personal to a lot of people, myself included, and you hit the nail on the head on this one I loved and appreciated you making this video 🤝
Much respect for you in not stopping midway to speak, and allowing the songs to play through instead. I think you are the first person to react to these songs that have done that, and I appreciate that. The lyrics are incredibly deep, and also it feels to me that the instruments, collectively, sound like tears falling (if one could hear a tear fall). I suppose that might just be me though.
In my opinion, this is simply the greatest and most powerful song I've ever heard. I'm so glad to finally hear a reaction that is genuine in their portrayal of something that is hard to put into words after an experience like that yet they do in a respectful and eloquent way. I may have listened to it 10000 times and it still hits me hard Every. Damn. Time. Wonderful reaction.
I have now played it about 15 times and still I get the same reaction out of myself. This is a very powerful song.
Every time I hear this song I think of my mother who passed and it absolutely kicks me in the guts hard.
As a life long Tool fanatic. This song has always been my absolute #1 Tool song since the day it was released.
Give me my wings!!!
The CD case for this album is the coolest one I own. It has a book of images attached with 3d glasses hinged on the side. Damn 15 years of listening to this song and I still have to hold back the tears.
Is that the one with never mind I'll look it with the bright light on the middle sorry I'm tripping
@@cr-nd8qh yes it is, lol no worries that's how best to listen to tool
This is the only respectful take. He helped me through losing my gramma - my true mother. So much grief in this track. So much grief. The only comfort I’ll accept around the religious. She was too. She loved god so much he should have made it easier if he were real. My grief is still heavy like his. The only artist I trust.
What a beautiful homage to his mother!
Both his voice/lyrics and the music portrait the feelings in such a powerful way...
It gets me every time!
Thank for sharing your reaction with us, peace and love from Mexico 🤟🏿
I love TOOL.
TOOL FOREVER !!
The song is amazing.
Dan, I loved your reaction, as always.

My man!
Maynard regretted putting this song on the album because, to quote him: “it was the stupidest thing I could have done. I’ll never make that mistake again," Keenan said. "It just took too much out of me - too much emotionally, mentally, physically - all those manifestations. Those songs were exploited and misconstrued, people were flippant and dismissive. I won’t be doing that anymore.”
This song is difficult to listen to for me and I’m sure, difficult for most people who have lost a parent or someone close to them. But what a beautiful tribute. Just amazing.
This song tears my heart out
Hits you in the feels everytime. How you felt listening to this is how we all feel brother. It is the deepest song. Hands down. Nothing deeper.
I've always loved Tool, they have a really exotic sound borrowed from Indian Scales. By the way, our music in Spain was also influenced by Indian music, actually our gypsies came to the South of the country from India and brought us the Flamenco, which is based on The Paravi Raga, one of the most popular genres of Indian classical music.
Also, Anoushka Shankar (the daughter of Ravi Shankar who was the sitarist that teached George Harrison to play sitar) has a song that unites both genres called "Isqh" I recommend you to listen to the live version of it , it's pure magic.
Have you ever heard Rodrigo y Gabriela? They're an instrumental duo. If don't already know them, you should check them out..they're incredible!!

The trilogy: Jimmy, Judith and Wings for Marie 1&2, really hit home. From sadness as a child when I was separated from my mother, to the anger I felt when she got sick and her devotion, to finally making peace with her and wishing with all my heart that she is where she wanted to be, with her maker. Gloria Salazar vives en mi, te amo, mamá.

Shout out to Jim Newsted
I support all Reactors on RUclips as long as they provide an intelligent and entertaining reaction that respects the artists and music. Jim Newstead is a good man.
After knowing the history and context, these (this?) songs hit so hard. Always chokes me up.
Shivers every time. What other band could have pulled this off? Nobody.
This hit me on an emotional level when I first heard it. It is roller coaster for anyone that has had loss in their lives.
You have done this song justice. I feel your understanding ❤❤❤
One of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful Tool song. I had the privilege of hearing it live 15 years ago and my goodness tears were shed. So fn powerful and heartbreaking. I remember the audience was silent and super respectful. Beautiful, stunning tribute to Ms. Keenan.
A true gut punch of a song. Hits hard on every level.
Who’s got the tissues.....I don’t need them I’m asking for a friend......
"Shut up Butthead. You're not crying, I'm crying."
You don't listen to Tool.
You experience them.
I literally just cried through this.
Its so haunting. I always listened to tool albums integrally so I loved it from the get go
Maynard James Keenan is his full name. Tool has changed my life since I first saw them at Lollapalooza 1993.

Thank you for the correction. I knew that at one point.
So personal he doesn’t sing it live anymore
Judith by A Perfect Circle shows Maynard's earlier feelings on how things went with his Mum.
Wings pt. 2 is by hands down my most favorite and personal song. Ever. Period. For me personally, from what I went through with my mother's decades long battle, she finally succumbed to suicide. I can't listen without bawling. But it's still worth it every time.
Right in the feels...every time

Tengo tu misma reacción cada vez que escucho este tema. La letra es increíble...y uff esa tormenta de fondo. Si esto no te mueve estas muerto por dentro.
Such a powerful songs. Perfection. This i dedicate to my mama Licha in my heart
Just respect for you reaction.
Thanks man. I appreciate it.
That is beautiful
The only song that gets me choked up, because of my own personal reasons. The words and their usage by Maynard hit hard. The solo sounds like someone wailing.
This song gets me every time I hear it.
Tears are not rare during this song.
When I first bought this album I wasn't sure about these songs as well but they have come to be the most meaningful songs on the album. And really some of the most personal songs I've ever heard. Its hard to listen and not tear up. For that reason alone I avoid them but it does not take away from them being masterpieces of music.
Well done mate. Good reaction👏
I did not really want to do it because, as you probably heard, it got me. i kept it together, but the story Maynard tells in that set of songs is heartbreaking.
@@CAFETIBURON this song gets me all the time. You did it perfectly. Keep up the good reactions 🍻👏
Supposedly the church members kinda took the position that she must have done something (sin) to deserve what happened. One of the main reasons many people turn away from God...the judgemental people that make up organized religion.
My mother passed away last year after being paralyzed and mute for 18 years from a stroke. We read the lyrics about shaking your fist at the gate...give me my wings at her funeral. Probably not too many 72 YOs to have TOOL lyrics read at their funeral. 🤘
Rest in peace, Mrs Thompson ❤

Tool is a Journey you either come for the ride or get off. Old Tool fans want Metal and it probably thought it was weak. But most Tool songs have an interlude. They just put them together on their later albums. This is an interlude to 10 thousand days.
In this instance, though, they are two parts..Wings For Marie (pt 1) & 10 000K Days (Wings, pt 2).
The first half & the second half.
MJK is a brilliant writer, lyricist & vocalist! These songs are intense!

how does one know the story.. then listen to this song, follow the lyrics, think about the deep emotion put into the writing... and not tear up?
Seriously, i want to know...
Some people don't cry. Or it's weak to cry they think like I was taught in America. I bet they feel it though
hits deep but a beautiful tribute to his mother...cold flouresence the lights of the hospital I think....as a Christian I hope one day Keenan can come to peace with all in his and his mother's life and allow Jesus to live in his heart

thank you
in part 2, lyrics are "feigning all the trials and the..." not '"fading all the trials and the..."
For the "fibbers in the congregation" in the song, it's not just that they don't care. They actively ostracized her because part of their faith is that if you've been stricken with an illness, it's a punishment from God. Alot of them believed she had to be some kind of horrible sinner to have been paralyzed for the rest of her life.
Judith(/Judice)-Marie
15:02 Pretty sure it's "Feigning all the trials and tribulations", not "Fading"...
I am sure you are right. I mess up lyrics all the time, and Google is just no help. Thanks for watching! I appreciate it.
@@CAFETIBURON Sure, thanks for posting. Wasn't criticizing, I know it's Google's lyrics. Just offering a small correction (as far as I know).
@@VanBradford I appreciate it. I am looking forward to getting to more TOOL songs, but right now, my subscriber base is largely Spanish and Latin. I aim to please my subs, but they also appreciate Tool and other US artists. So more Tool and Perfect Circle coming. Thanks for being part of my channel!
When will someone correct that lyric, arguably the most important lyric in the song: Set as I am in MY ways and MY arrogance, (where) the burden of proof (is) tossed upon THE BELIEVER (he is saying despite his arrogance where he demands proof of God from those who believe in God)... (despite all that) YOU were MY witness my eyes my evidence... --it continues to annoy me that this is the lyric most people find online when it is the complete opposite of what he is saying.
Thanks for the correction! Part of what I like to do is examine the lyrics as poetry and if it is incorrect, the entire meaning is lost. I appreciate your feedback.
If I may chime in..there's another incorrect word in the second paragraph, third line..he says:
'Feigning' (not 'Fading') all the trials and tribulations, though none of us have actually been there.
If we think about the context in which 'Feigning' is used in that line, and really, in line with the entire song, it makes complete sense. Feigning means: pretend to be affected by.
He's saying they're pretending to be affected by all of her trials and tribulations, even though they're all really hypocrites and have never been through what Judith had (and still maintained true to her faith).
Also, just a side note...It always saddens me, from the first time ever hearing, that MJK wished he had never released these songs honouring his mother..profoundly deep, personal & absolutely beautiful, one of a kind songs.
MJK is a lyrical genius, one of the most creative, thought-provoking singers/songwriters/vocalists/artists of all time! I love these songs, and am so glad he Did Write Them! Salut! 🥂
