My mother passed away in 2020 after suffering a stroke and being paralyzed and mute for 18 years. We read the lyrics at her funeral, "You're the only one who can hold your head up high

My grandma was left quadriplegic after a bad fall. She raised me and my brother and my father. She was in that state for 8 years, without being able to move her body for 8 years. I completely understand the strength that this song has over a man.
Such an incredibly beautiful tribute/eulogy to a mother from an adoring son. If this song doesn’t bring a tear to your eye, are you even human?
"Fetch me the spirit the Son and the father and tell them their pillar of faith has ascended" that always sends me into tears as my own mother was pretty much the same being with similar faith and went down in a long, arduous way. It's left me bitter at times, yet forgiving as well as I know she'd want it that way it's funny how art imitates life

GREAT reaction!! Honestly, if there is anyone, ANYONE who makes fun of you crying at this extremely emotional song, especially if it hits home, they have no soul, nor empathy! This two-part song has always made me tear up - and with good reason. Maynard has bared his soul & raw emotion (in a more accepting way than A Perfect Circle's - Judith - where he was very, VERY angry!) He's being honest in saying he doesn't understand her faith, but as it was her faith, and she stood steadfast to it - her devotion should yield a guarantee into heaven!
He's as self-deprecating as one can be - he knows he's not a believer like she was. But it's very, very poignant that he ends with 'Hallelujah' - meaning Praise the Lord - he's hoping his mom is in a much better place!! Love this track.
I always felt Part One is Maynard at the hospital prior to her passing, it’s his thoughts and feelings seeing her before her death. The part where it ramps up I felt shows the raw emotions after she passes. Then it ends with him reflecting again leading into Part Two. I feel Part Two is a literal Eulogy he is writing internally to honor her passing.
Love this. It's magical how they can paint a flowing timeline through their music. The emotion is up to 11!

My mother is still very much alive and a healthy 76, but the lyrics in these songs bring a serious emotional response from me, kinda like prepping me for how I’ll feel if she passes before I do.
And for the 247,118 time, I cried like a baby......so beautiful, Maynard is a renaissance man and I feel the greatest lyricist of all time
These songs get me emotional. My mom suffered for year's in and out of the hospital before passing away. These songs always make me think of her struggles. This weekend will be two year's since she's passed.

That thud at the very end of Part 1...the coffin closing...chills every time. And Part 2 always gives me chills through out the whole song. Very powerful song.
The slam I always heard as thunder, but a coffin closing is symbolically so connected... followed by a repeating metallic "springy" sound like reverberations through drop ceilings and artificial light filaments. It's like a movie for the ears.
"This little light of mine" was a song I can still remember being somethig that made the purest sense as a child, before growing jaded into adulthood.
Also, that sound at the very end of the song...."it's time for you to bring me home" makes me envision her soul rising up into the heavens.
The instrumentals in 10,000 days are just absolutely incredible!! Top tier Tool for me!

Also one year on Saturn is 10,759 days. The Grudge has many references to Saturn. Also 10,000 days is just over 27 years.
Regarding the spewing sympathy, spare me, supposedly when she was stricken ill the people in the congregation essentially blamed her for not being devout enough or being a sinner and that is why she was stricken ill. Then later people were sympathetic at the funeral.

I think the "Ignorant siblings in the congregation" might refer to the fact that many christians call themselves "brothers and sisters in christ." I've also read it as "Ignorant fibbers in the congregation." Great video man!

Great reaction, I played part 2 at my sister's funeral among other tracks. I know Lipan Conjuring is short, but Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman) and Rosetta Stoned absolutely should be played together. Most people just listen to all 3. Either way, I'm looking forward to Toolsday!

These were my grieving songs after my aunt tied cancer (cancer can’t win. The best it can do is tie) and after my grandmother passed at 102 years old and years of dementia. I was lucky enough to have seen them perform them in 2007. I’ve been to a lot of concerts and had a lot of awesome experiences. But this isn’t even in the same league. No exaggeration, it was an out of body experience. It was outside under the stars and everything and everyone were one. It was beautiful.

Truth. I banter with you all the time on Aesop reactions. Not surprised to see you here. Both Aesop and Maynard can bring that gut-wrenching brutal honesty that will make me skip certain tracks while driving. Very few artists can do that, and seeing a reactor that really feels it is special.
I'm right there with you, bro. My mother held the family together when dad was killed in 2004. She was the light and fueled our faith in God.
She never wavered during her battle with cancer years later. As much as she was ready to be reunited with my father and sister, she held on as long as she could.
There’s no way you can “scroll thru” anything tool has to offer.

These two are only very occasional listens for me. So emotionally heavy. I was lucky enough to witness them play these songs live. Honestly, words fail. Don't selfcensor, my friend. We want the fumbles and the emotions.
The double entendre in the lines “Daylight dims, leaving cold fluorescence. Difficult to see you in this light.” Honestly might be my favorite lyrics ever when in the context of this song. The song 10,000 days also has some of my favorite bass work from Justin.

My wife passed a month ago from a stroke in my arms while we were heading to bed. It's not something I wish upon anyone. Song makes me want to ball every time I hear it. I used the lyrics at the end of the song for part of my eulogy

These songs hit very hard for me. My brother was paralyzed for 30 years until his death in 2009. My mother was disabled by a stroke and bedridden for 10 years until passing in 1994. I can’t listen to these often. They bring up too much emotion. I absolutely know your feelings for your mom. Peace and spiral out.
THIS is the only 2 songs he has written lyrics to that is TOO personal for him to put out. Yet he still did. And yes Danny Adam and Justin are the perfect triad of musicians

My mom died when I was 18. And similarly was the religious one in the family. But her death was sudden, unexpected, and painful in a different way. I did not have to watch her suffer during any period of time. Aside from retrospectively. So I sympathize and empathize with your situation, and what a powerful song right? I am thankful every time I hear it that this song even exists . For us all to mourn collectively. Keep your chin up man, we are all equal and experiencing the concept of pain together . ✌️
Considering that they make the music and THEN give it to Maynard shows just how great the band is to begin with, but how great Maynard is to come up with the lyrics and melodies etc to line up with what the boys send him. I am pretty sure he has said that he regrets this one because it's so personal, but that's why I love it.
I was raised Catholic and I'm atheist now. But that congregation part has me thinking that this part of the song is where people are gathering to pay their respects to his Mom(either at the funeral, or (since I don't know the details) maybe they knew she was going to die soon and people were gathering to say goodbyes. (my mom had Cancer and there was a few months there where people would visit, so maybe under that kind of scenario) and basically, they would offer sympathies or condolences and with his view on religion and knowing his mom was so devout(and maybe he knows the other people in the church's personal life and they weren't so devout) he sees their kind words to be unwanted or not coming from a place that is anything but hypocritical.
Apparently this song had such a mixed reception that Maynard has said he'll never write anything close to him like this again.

I think that this album is a bit sensitive, and I was so overblown to hear them open up with Jambi this last October.
Everyone is a Tool fan. Some just don't know it yet.
Edit: Maynard struggled a lot with his mother's faith. After her aneurysm, she remained faithful at the ridicule of her her congregation. They accused her of all kinds of sins that they blamed her stroke on.
You can see see his anger, well justified, but ironically, he came full circle throughout all of his bands.
Excited to deep dive further. If the rest of the album is anything like how this, "Jambi", "Vicarious", and The Pot" are, this could not be just my favorite TOOL album, but one of my favorites period!

Not sure if you know this. Maynards mother divorced his father at a young age (age 11). Back then it was taboo to do so. Shortly after, she became paralyzed. The church took it as an acknowledged, as an act of God. She continued to go to church for 27 years. She showed her faith. Maynard, has a had time with this, because he sees each week people are being mean to his mother. That is why he brings up the Judus line while he sings.
You should listen to Judith by A Perfect Circle first and you’ll see the transition.
