And they dip into every surrounding style of music, to shit on the heads of the (often great) artists on those guy's home turf. It's total piss-taking. I reckon Maynard farts more complex material than your average 'pop star'
There's a whole cycle of songs dedicated to Maynard's relationship with his mother, who was paralyzed for 27 years (about 10,000 days) until she died. She never lost her faith in her god through it, and Maynard struggled with understanding how she could follow a god that would do that to her.
Aesir Asgard that's where you're sorely wrong. God didn't plan her suffering.... suffering comes from OUR choices...not God's will. God does know we will suffer and by keeping faith through our sufferings he offers eternal peace. You can't force a athiestic view into divinity. It won't hold water my friend. Peace and blessings
When my mom was in hospice soon to pass away from cancer, unconscious, I whispered the "You're the only one..." section of this song into her ear. She would have been 58 tomorrow.
in a child’s eyes, a mother is a goddess... she can be glorious or terrible, benevolent or filled with wrath, but she commands love either way... i am convinced that this is the greatest power in the universe... because god could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers... and sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws...
Probably the most beautiful song I've ever heard. I can't listen to it without tearing up. Tool are the truth, the way and the light. Forget God. I've listened to tool and I've had "religious experiences". Tool is better and they actually exist.
DUUUDE so did I. I am not the type to cry in movies or for anything really, but this song always seems to get me to that point. Maybe its because my mother wasted away, and I remember being in the hospital with everything not natural. The lyrics day light dims leaving cold fluorescents is genius in its word play, because with that sentence alone it creates a picture in your mind. Its also a play on natural light being her at her best and cold fluorescents being her corpse (mechanical, material but artificial). It can be taken metaphorically or literally.
@@soakedbearrd All of their songs are incredible, but there is a vulnerability and a little something extra that comes out in these songs that is next level even for Tool.
It's been what 14 years if listening to this song, and I still can't actual listen to it or watch the lyrical video without tearing up. This song just is so fucking raw
Maynard actually regretted releasing Wings for Marie 1 and 2. He said in an interview “I’ll never make that mistake again. It just took too much out of me - too much emotionally, mentally, physically - all those manifestations. Those songs were exploited and misconstrued, people were flippant and dismissive. I won’t be doing that anymore. And technically, ‘Wings’ is very difficult to pull off. If any one of us is off, it falls apart and makes that thing tragic, and that’s not a good song for me to have fall apart. It’s just too personal.” We should be thankful that he let us in that close to something that is extremely personal for him.
You're absolutely right Preston, Tool is on another level. I don't know why I didn't listen to more of them years ago but this song was breathtakingly beautiful. What an homage to his Mom, I'm over here sobbing like a baby and thinking of my Mom. This was the first time I've heard this song too and I'm just overwhelmed with emotion. I feel this song to my bones, talkin bout the funeral with phony family members actin like they give a shit, I can relate to that. Talking about how she was his light in this world, I've said that about my Mom a million times and how hard it was to see her in the cold fluorescent lights which I'm assuming was in the hospital, I can relate to that to since my Mom passed away in the hospital and I was right there with her and how she suffered so long in hell and now it was her time for her wings. Possibly things in her life or a prolonged illness, ughh this song really got to me. Sorry for the long comment but I just had to share what I was feeling.
Patti Toole have a listen to the song judith by a perfect circle. It Maynard from tools other band. song he wrote when his mom was still alive. Lyrics are a must.
Judith by A Perfect Circle displays his anger with his mother's illness. And anger toward his mother's faith in God, questioning how God could have possibly allowed one of his faithful servants to fall into such disrepair. I can relate to his anger, but I can also relate to his reconciliation with the notion that his mother remained faithful and persistently believed in God despite being broken; the true sign of faith. I like that in Wings for Marie Part 2, Maynard seemed to have come to terms with his mother's faith in God, and possibly even God himself.
I think you're putting smiles on alot of people's faces and you may not even realize it bro, thank you for this channel, you got us keeping the faith out here!

I so much enjoy your Tool reactions. I wish you would redo all the Tool songs you have done but do them with the lyrics. I am able to relate to many of lyrics and the way they use instruments as both emotion/art/expression/etc... is like icing on the cake. I got to see Tool live when they went on tour for this album. My mom had passed a few years before and after this song the whole band just sat down on the stage. There were lighters held up over the whole arena and the silence was vibrating. My heart was outside my chest with tears streaming down my face. They are a phenomenal band recorded. They are on another plane of existence live.
Wooow....what a moment. Just reading that got me mildly emotional because I can just pictures an entire arena of Tool fans holding silence for the power of this art while the whole band just sat down. Unreal. What a moment you got to experience. Sorry for your loss.
I appreciate the way you are discovering & realizing the greatness of Tool! It's like a spiritual awakening. The smartest & most original band I've ever heard.
I lost my wife to cancer a little over a year ago and this has been on very high rotation since. You can feel the sorrow in Maynard's lyrics and the way he sings them.
I've been a decade long Tool fan, yet I've not gone deep into their lyrics until watching your videos. Thanks for helping extend my love for this amazing band even more!
To answer your question, the musicians work on the music together for about 5-10 years and then Maynard listens when they are done and writes all the lyrics based on how the music inspires him. He’s what’s known as a super genius.
The song prior to this would be by Maynard’s other band, A Perfect Circle, Judith. Maynard followed it up with Wings for Marie. Judith Marie being his mom. Although out of sequence, Judith is definitely worth a listen/reaction. Its intense and angry. A Perfect Circle has many incredibly GREAT songs.
This is such a underrated song!!! This is easily my favorite tool song! Wings for Marie pt. 1 &2 listened together is something truly remarkable. Just the story behind it makes it all come together beautifully. 👌
maynard lets the band make the songs he calls them the "sounds" he writes lyrics once all the "sounds" are complete. and writes each songs lyrics specifically for that song. doesn't come in with any material before hearing the finished sounds. The Band meticulously builds these masterpieces, then Maynard takes em home! definetely watch the lyric video with explanation for 46 & 2. very informative.
I really love the fact that you are discovering and appreciating TOOL for the same reasons us fans appreciate and love them for. I know you're really being moved and a fan because it's a lot of the same reasons we (longtime fans) are moved too. And it's why I have never left their side. Love your videos man! You've got a lot of discovery ahead of you. I still find new things in their music to appreciate. Welcome to the army.
I'm a Black guy, and I fell in love with TOOL many years ago with the song " SOBER" (imagine that),after a nasty fight with my girlfriend at the time. I always liked rock music and was aware of TOOL, but honestly their music and videos scared me a the time. At the end of the day, TOOL is Man music, and it's nice to hear another man express his love for his late mother.
Tool is the result of what happens when artists stick to their integrity and principles. Taking the time, effort, and passion required to craft Something Beautiful. Bad thing is that a lot of other bands are just going to sound terrible. the good thing is that you'll be able to listen to them for the rest of your life. Somehow their songs and lyrics have an ambiguous quality that allows then to achieve something truly unique. As I grow older I find that they mean something a little different to me each time, and I am able to find new inspiration from them.
Welcome to "Tool" bro! By far has been and will be my favorite!... Always! The meaning and poetic lyrics, NO band will ever match. They have their own uniqueness and flow that in my opinion meshes together perfectly in this band!! 👍 Look forward to watching more of your video reviews my friend!
Love your reactions Preston...so beautifully raw and genuine. Yes...you should do lyric videos for any you watched before doing the lyric videos. I think you’ll like Sober more knowing the lyrics. Thank you KTF Family! Peace!! (Your deadpan looks in the camera has me cracking up 😆 ) I knew you’d appreciate Tool...glad you like them.
If one were to dissect each album song by song to the point were you're dropping knowledge to even the most enlightened tool fan... Well... That'd be dope.
Man, i am beyond jelious of you getting to hear these tracks for the first time. There's a reason way TOOL is my favorite rock band of all time. They are special. Musically, lyrically and just setting a mood. They make you feel.
Yeah...it's hard for me to listen to this song without having tears run down my face. I love it, but ever since my Mom passed a couple of years ago, it always leaves me teary-eyed now.
Preston... I'm so jealous. To be able to hear Tool again for the first time would be heavenly. I'm glad you can appreciate the artistry! 'Reflection' should be on your list if you need some more profound poetry backed by mesmerizing melodies...
Read his book " A Perfect Union of Contrary Things" it will give you an insight to the way he writes so deeply, and the meanings behind the emotion. It will add another level to these songs that seem deep enough on their own.
They make the music, i.e., the rhythm, the guitar, the bass, the drums, and then the Maynard comes in and finds his grove with the sound. Simply magic. There really is no other way to explain TOOL besides the qualifier. It’s simply magic music. In all seriousness, these guys are the true professionals of any genre of music. One take guys. Live as perfect as production tracks. So perfect in every way, ninety nine percent of the time.
just subscribed man theres many more of tool songs you should check out. you actually are listening to the lyrics meaning unlike other people doing what you do keep it up brother
This is my favourite TOOL song. Watching you talk about it saying it was like he was crying out and I think you said it reminded you of when your dad passed means he’s getting through to the listener in a powerful way. Thank you for doing these videos, Preston. I can tell how music affects you it’s refreshing to see people appreciate music for what it is. You’re right too, there’s no band out there like TOOL. They’re one of a kind
The lyrics in The Patient are the real deal. Another great video. I relive this experience every few months when I revisit my tool collection. Wings for Marie is one of the more powerful tracks. If youre down for another 11 minute song with a very long intro The reflection is amazing lyrically and musically.
I can’t listen to Wings for Marie without crying. Those lyrics about his mother when she was dying are so powerful. My mother is a strong Christian woman and I could see these lyrics going towards her if something ever happened to her. They are powerful!
I know love and respect it’s about Judith Marie, my mothers same name but the line “give me my wings” means so much more to me than any one can imagine.......long live Tool...keep em coming KTF....chur bro...
First time seeing you. Love your reaction. As a pasty-white blue-skinned Scotsman to a black American rapper (I've yet to hear before your intro, sorry, but I will now check you out) I have no words... I've been a fan of Tool since the late 90s. They really are just head and shoulders above. It's exhausting as a fan to listen.
Like you said, you can't compare Tool to anyone else. They have created a whole new genre and level of sophistication, and competency in their music making.
Maynard James Keenan is the lead singer of TOOL. He has his own winery, sings for TOOL, APC, PUSICFER and may just be the wises and deepest artist of our time. Thanks for the videos, love em!
Preston, I think this may be my favorite reaction video I've seen you do. It is such an emotional song in the first place, and the way you kept going back to listen to the lyrics and then began to sing along with them.... you totally get it.
Most powerful song I've heard. Now you can listen to A Perfect Circle's song "Judith". The singer Maynard also sings for A Perfect Circle and "Judith" was also written about his mother. That song is quite a bit different though haha. Angry lyrics rather than sad and mournful.
Better than Wings for Marie? Not many. But..... I will suggest to you "The Holy Trinity". Off of the Lateralus album, in sequence, Disposition-Reflection-Triad. It may not be better than Wings, but it's up there. Might be best if you listen to The Grudge first from that album. Will make the whole thing come together. It's all about growth, becoming something greater than you once were. If you need reference for what he was, listen to Opiate and Undertow. What he becomes is what you just heard in Wings. Hopefully this makes sense. 46 & 2 was all about the transformation. Enjoy listening.
Sometimes I think Tool must be aware of a musical genre on a different world that none of the rest of us know about. That must be how they are influenced and come up with their music. Either that or they are individual musical geniuses that we should all thank our lucky stars got together in the first place.
The 15 people who disliked this song/video/reaction have no soul. Tool is amazing and this song is something special. Combine a completely organic, genuine reaction, from a person who is just taking it all in for the first time, and you have a great video. Keep it up. I’ve watched your Tool reaction videos probably 10 times each in the last year or so.
Since you love Maynard's lyrics, you should definitely check out /react to his 2 other bands: A Perfect Circle & Puscifer! Jimmy (from Tool's Ænima album) was a song written about his mom while she was still alive, as well as Judith by A Perfect Circle. Wings For Marie & 10,000 Days (Wings pt.2) were written around the time of her passing (after 27 yrs in the Fire). Then, in Puscifer, he wrote another song about spreading her ashes over one of the slopes of his vineyard titled Horizons. He once stated that, "Now she can travel the world and meet new and exciting people everywhere she goes..." Love watching you make this journey bro, keep it going!!!
That brought tears to my eyes. I lost my Mother a few years back, and that's the thing with Tool, is their music can make you laugh, cry, angry, etc. They just hit every nerve. That's why you gotta drink that G2, keep your brain hydrated lol. Steve L.
My mom died a year ago from a stroke, after being crippled by one in 2013, and this song helps me, as a longtime Tool fan, deal with it. Thank you, Maynard.
Dude, you are so on the money with your Tool reactions and I love your raw and uninhibited reactions- it takes a real man to share that without the fear of being judged. I suggest you do a live lyrical reaction to "You Lied " from their album "Salival" (which was the live album the came with their box set. I have been listening to Tool since I was a 14 year old girl and that was 1994, so as my favorite band since being a teenage girl, I can HONESTLY say that over the past 27 years, I have just kept falling more and more in love with them every year with no signs of slowing down. I got to see them live twice, and bro, they are truly BETTER live than recorded which is RIDICULOUSLY impossible to pull off given the complexity and demanding musicianship (to perfection) that ALL of their ingenious songs require- truly mindblowing. Again, "You Lied " from their album "Salival" would be amazing for you to react to, as well as "Pneuma " off of "Fear Innoculum " from the Danny Carey drum view of the song- mindblowing.
I think it's awesome that you are even giving Tool a chance! They are truly amazing! My wife and I have seen them live about 7 times.
I got it now we need a live stream TOOL album reaction. That would be awesome
Lateralus
I’ve heard this song soooo many times and it always gives me goosebumps. Probably one of the most heartfelt songs ever written. Glad it GOT you too
The song prior to this would be by Maynard’s other band, A Perfect Circle, Judith. Maynard followed it up with Wings for Marie. Judith Marie being his mom. Although out of sequence, Judith is definitely worth a listen/reaction. Its intense and angry. A Perfect Circle has many incredibly GREAT songs.
Gail T
It goes Jimmy - Judith - Wings pt 1&2
Yes, you should do a lyric video to 46 & 2... a video that also explains the meaning of the song.
As I grow older I find that they mean something a little different to me each time, and I am able to find new inspiration from them.
yes. all of this. 🖤
Well said.
Welcome to "Tool" bro! By far has been and will be my favorite!... Always! The meaning and poetic lyrics, NO band will ever match. They have their own uniqueness and flow that in my opinion meshes together perfectly in this band!! 👍
Look forward to watching more of your video reviews my friend!
These songs helped me when my mom passed. I'm sure helped out a lot of other people too
For me, this is the TOP Tool song. It's a masterpiece.
Again I love how you get TOOL! They are in their own class, lyrically and musically. Love you reactions, especially TOOL.
Yes do 46 & 2 however I recommend using the researching the meaning version with lyrics
Yes! There are a couple of really good videos with lyrics and meaning.
x100. The lyrics don't tell you much. Down the rabbit hole P
ABSOLUTELY MIND BLOWING
If one were to dissect each album song by song to the point were you're dropping knowledge to even the most enlightened tool fan... Well... That'd be dope.
Man, i am beyond jelious of you getting to hear these tracks for the first time. There's a reason way TOOL is my favorite rock band of all time. They are special. Musically, lyrically and just setting a mood. They make you feel.
Yeah...it's hard for me to listen to this song without having tears run down my face. I love it, but ever since my Mom passed a couple of years ago, it always leaves me teary-eyed now.
Same here man
Preston... I'm so jealous. To be able to hear Tool again for the first time would be heavenly. I'm glad you can appreciate the artistry! 'Reflection' should be on your list if you need some more profound poetry backed by mesmerizing melodies...
ANDREW WEDGE I know exactly what you mean. The first tool song I ever heard was H and it changed my life for music forever.
They’re one of a kind
definitely do a lyric video to 46+2, theres one that includes bits that explain the lyrics as well
The lyrics in The Patient are the real deal. Another great video. I relive this experience every few months when I revisit my tool collection. Wings for Marie is one of the more powerful tracks. If youre down for another 11 minute song with a very long intro The reflection is amazing lyrically and musically.
This was Maynard's "Dear Momma"
I can’t listen to Wings for Marie without crying. Those lyrics about his mother when she was dying are so powerful. My mother is a strong Christian woman and I could see these lyrics going towards her if something ever happened to her. They are powerful!
Reaction Tool - Eulogy
Love it! Been a tool fan since '93. I'm going in 44 yrs this April. Love your show.
46 & 2 is a lyrical must but be prepared my friend.
I know love and respect it’s about Judith Marie, my mothers same name but the line “give me my wings” means so much more to me than any one can imagine.......long live Tool...keep em coming KTF....chur bro...
You still have a whole world of tool to explore. You've only just hit the surface.
I don't listen to Wings for Marie much...
But when I do, I turn into a blubbering mess.
Like you said, you can't compare Tool to anyone else. They have created a whole new genre and level of sophistication, and competency in their music making.
My man. Probably my favorite song of all time. Check out the background of the lyrics and you'll appreciate the song even more! THIRD EYE!!
Maynard James Keenan is the lead singer of TOOL. He has his own winery, sings for TOOL, APC, PUSICFER and may just be the wises and deepest artist of our time. Thanks for the videos, love em!
If you do another Tool song today, try something from Lateralus like The Grudge or Parabol/Parabola. Both incredible songs!
Song gets me every time, the emotions he must have been feeling whiles writing these lyrics.
TOOL-The Grudge, great reaction to a Masterpiece.
One of the greatest love songs you'll ever hear. Anyone who loves their mother that much and that deeply is ok in my book eternally.
What can top this song? Keep ging down the Tool rabbit hole, it just gets better.....
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Their song parabola is also a lyrical masterpiece.
Alot of DMT, eastern music trances, western magick, kundalini meditation. They're just different in every way
Seeing you sing along filled my heart with joy bruh
Tool - Rosetta Stoned. Not deep but a ride nonetheless.
OmegaProxy Actually it is deep if you know it's backstory...but it's kind of amusing at the same time.
In my opinion, Lost Keys / Rosetta Stoned is their finest work
Harrison Dennis one of my favourites but I wouldn't consider a supposed alien abduction by someone on hallucinogens very deep. Amusing I agree.
Chris Mark As a drummer i think Rosetta Stoned is Danny's best work.
Even hearing each part played back I get goosebumps everytime. Like each little part
If you do another Tool song, try out Aenima
I just really appreciate you allowing yourself to be carried away on the journey of experiencing Tool’s performance.
Yes! Lyric video to 46 & 2!
Wish I could see them play this live, part 1 and 2. Such great songs. So deep. Very underrated.
He once stated that, "Now she can travel the world and meet new and exciting people everywhere she goes..."
Love watching you make this journey bro, keep it going!!!
That brought tears to my eyes. I lost my Mother a few years back, and that's the thing with Tool, is their music can make you laugh, cry, angry, etc. They just hit every nerve. That's why you gotta drink that G2, keep your brain hydrated lol. Steve L.
A perfect circle- Judith
My mom died a year ago from a stroke, after being crippled by one in 2013, and this song helps me, as a longtime Tool fan, deal with it. Thank you, Maynard.
I'm the one who request this song , and thanks for this react bro . I love this song Is pretty deep song
“This little light of mine, a gift you passed onto me. I’m gonna let it shine and guide you safely on your way.” So much feeling.
Push it... The only song that could possibly top it... Wings is a close 2nd for me... Thanks for doing it Pres...
Thank you for helping to expose the greatest band of all time! You are an awesome and honest dude and you're an absolute joy to watch! Thank you so much! - Love, Laura (a.k.a. LP)
But you have to listen to tool H.
one of my favorite tool songs
ALWAYS listen to tool with headphones. you miss so much without them. love the tool videos. they have completely changed my perspective on so many things in life. glad you've found something with them like i did.
