    10,000 days is my 2nd favorite Tool album (behind Lateralus). so many great vocal moments in this album: jambi's "might as well be gone", 10k days "give me my wings", rosetta stoned "overwhelmed as one would be", right in two "lift an eye to heaven conscious of fleeting time" and so many more. I absolutely love this album, lyrically great, guitar is great, etc.

  • @omidnorozi5921

    About the Rosetta stoned you might think it's lyrically weaker than others but it's not, if you use psychedelic a bunch of times it's pretty relatable. On psychedelics, sometimes you feel epiphany like you understand some great things, you feel like the chosen one and you actually feel like you found something profound that no one else knows about or understand it, and an hour or two later you don't remember a god damn thing, no matter how much you try to remember it's all gone. This song beautifully represents that strange state of mind and it captures those relatable feelings amazingly .

    Rosetta Stoned is like tripping so hard that you cannot verbalize the epiphanies you have. The "rosetta stone" is the psychedelic that opens up new perceptions, and to be "rosetta stoned" is to fet to that point.

    I reckon the most beautiful line in TOOL's discography is both 'repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of its fleeting time here', tied with 'cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion between supposed lovers/brothers' in schism. I looked down on 10,000 Days initially thinking it's only good track was The Pot, as did my dad but then i decided that TOOL wouldn't release a shitty album, ever. Gave this album a once-over, twice-over, thrice-over... holy crap this is one of the best. I actually rank this one above Ænima, just because it has slightly less filler (15 songs?! wait nono it's more like 9 or 10 real songs)... and nothing that isn't on lateralus compares to some of these tracks, with the exception of 46&2, jimmy and pushit. amazing video bro, you deserve more than 1.31K subscribers. (can you please do ...And Justice For All next please?)
    Onya!

    Rosetta stoned also describes a character more so than it does sing about something. The character is someone who takes drugs and believes they have ascended to being superior to other mere mortals, even tho they cant explain why. We experience the ego death when taking psychadelics and it is profound yet for some, when the ego comes back after sobering the interpretation is made by the ego instead of a more introspective part of ourselves. The ego thinks they must have experienced something more profound than usual. We’ve all met someone who took acid for the first time and now just acts as if “they know what you cannot” it’s very relatable. But some people take it too far. And they are usually goobers like the one maynard writes about.

    • @aELLimA
      @aELLimA 3 месяца назад

      Except the subject of Rosetta (Bill Manspeaker) is a good friend of Maynard’s and the rest of the band. That was an actual story told to them and Maynard turned it into lyrics because he thought it was funny. I don’t think it’s really a criticism of anything.

      @@Magnumscrotus Bill is rad. I got to play around on stage with Green Jello a few months back when he practically pushed me up the stage stairs. Such a good time. I think what you said is true of most Tool songs, but Adam even said in that Q&A he did years ago that sometimes it’s a simple as hearing a story and writing a song about it, referring specifically to Rosetta Stoned at the time. I do think they are clearly capable of just fucking around sometimes and not having an underlying message to every single thing. If anything, they knew Tool fans would attach a deeper meaning to it anyway. That’s kind of what we are known for. 😆

    • @Magnumscrotus
      @Magnumscrotus 3 месяца назад +1

      @@aELLimA very true, and that is also the beauty of music especially the kind tool makes is what meanings people will apply to it. I guess this interpretation made alot of sense to me. At the end of the day i get that the song is really what it says it is at face value but the conversation you have after it and about it is the magical part, and that’s where the conversation leads me.

    6:12 I take those lines as this:
    The dire tone of the guitar and bass when MJK says "what have I done" is the feeling you get when the realization sets in that someone is gone.
    He follows with "to be a son to an angel" because he realizes that it was a gift to have come from her.

  • @nuggetbomber5977
    @nuggetbomber5977 3 месяца назад +33

    Theres something, a minor detail I think you missed. Vicarious has a specific line, “Credulous at best your desire to believe in Angels in the hearts of men…”, and you do acknowledge that he goes back on that statement and belief but only at Intension. He goes back on it wayyy earlier with 10,000 Days, his mother is that Angel that he believed in, that truly pure soul that he saw, just after one other song.
    I’ve read the first 4 songs as going together to show their overall growth and evolution in the way they think throughout the years. Vicarious is so good, but very overly edgy at times, almost like it’s written by a 14 year old who’s angry at god. Then it moves to Jambi, where he’s slowly realizing that there truly is good in this world, that he doesn’t have to express only through hate and negativity, then Wings where his mother dies and he realizes that he’s exactly what he was criticizing but embraces it.
    Though, Vicarious does still have that overtone that’s about how we all feed on negativity on the news, and even the negativity of his own life, which he then tells in the next songs. Instead of a mother holding her dying child crying “why oh why”, it’s the child holding the mother crying.
    As with a lot of their songs, there’s like 15 layers and tons of ways to read into all of this shit. I like yours and others’ interpretations, this one is just my own

    did indeed cry on the 10,000 days explanation. Also I would note that Intension starts (in my opinion) far before the stone age, when we were pure forms of life that moved by will alone, not requiring flesh or mundane desires to move us. Then it progresses to stone age, then rapidly to further development of civilization, etc. Right in two is probably also referencing the tendency for people to not only divide things (land, people, feelings, resources, etc) but also to divide ideas, hence dualistic thinking that constantly keeps people from even having the chance to think in a unified manner.

    These tracks hit home so hard for me... My mother suffered from cerebral hemmorhages throughout her life, which made her slowly become more and more disabled.... One of them was during my birth, which almost killed her....
    4 1/2 years ago, she got hit by the worst one. She lost her memory at points, only temporarely, but she started to become weaker. She lost her ability to speak after a few months, and at the same time, she became wheelchair-bound...
    We lost more and more of her over the years, and I saw her 5 days ago, and she was so tired.... she passed 2 days later, 3 days ago.... and I've just finished writing her eulogy....

    to be honest, this album was my favorite of them all. i don't particularly care (personally) for fictional themes. music as therapy for dealing with or analyzing real life (whether emotional, political, or philosophical) has always been more meaningful to me.

    I remember I bought the 10,000 days CD last Halloween, when I got home I put it in the CD player, Turned off all the light's and put on a good pair of headphones. It was the first time I truly listened to it without any distractions, it changed my life. When the title track ended I was left there thinking "holy shit that was beautiful", it is easily Tool's most beautiful track and my favourite ever since.

    10,000 was always my fav album. It may not have huge tool hits, but Rosetta got me into tool, I love the message of the pot and right and two, jambi is always a banger. Wings and 10,000 is a beautiful song that my mother and I can relate to. Vicarious is just an awesome banger too. EVERYONE FORGETS INTENSION

    Rosetta stoned is the patient telling the doctor and the nurse what happened to him.
    But the whole song is sarcastic and calling out UFO nutters and psychadelic trippers who are too into that life.

      The subject of that song is a good friend of theirs, so not calling out so much as just laughing at the scenario.

    Listened to the album on acid, no visuals until the pot bass line and my room twisted upside down. No other album did anything close to that

    Let’s not forget the flip side of the King Solomon story. The true mother prioritizes the child’s flourishing. She is willing to sacrifice her down desire so that her child may survive and thrive, because life is the quest to unleash human potential.

    i really like how Maynards understanding of Christianity in wings for Marie is very naïve but only through the through the suffering of someone he loves that truly believes in god does he start to understand that Christianity isn't about tolerance, or peace "Suffering for salvation" but love, mercy and forgiveness. The world is evil, but god is good.

    I used to agree that Lateralus, Aenima then 10,000 days, but over the years 10,000 days has really grown on me. Its a tie between that and Lateralus and maybe some days 10,000 gets ahead. Its more refined yet broad in its style. Aenima was very 'bland' and similar. Lateralus was a step up but only barely. 10,000 days was truly a masterpiece of diverse creation.

    I consider them the holy trinity. Three amazing albums made over 10 years. Not that one is better than the other but all 3 are awesome for different reasons. I love the proggy journey of Jambi then the ballsy punk of Hooker with a pee pee then the trippy introspection of Reflection. I could go on. All 3 different, but still great in their way.

    i think The Grudge is the best opener other than Vicarious but the album was definitely about how Maynard needed to let go of his burden of knowing everything in a total of 10000 days

    Although not my favorite Tool album it is however the best sounding. For me I don't mind the direction Tool went with Lateralus but I prefer their more direct to your face approach from their debut to Lateralus. Besides Maynard's voice unfortunately couldn't hold up doing these songs and would eventually skip doing several parts of songs that he can't scream anymore. So the more musically focused approach was not only necessary but turned out to be a wise decision as they have won several awards and praises for their new musical style with Maynard taking a back seat and the other 3 members to shine more. Danny Carey has always been the true Rockstar of Tool for me and what gave me the enthusiasm to listen to more of their material. Saw them live in 2002 and that cemented their legacy for me ✌🏽♥️

    Rosetta stoned was really maynard singing about William Charles Manspeaker of Green Jello and his old Roomate's experience in the desert. i've met Bill in person recently and he stands by that it did in fact happen. really awesome Guy and a big part of why we have tool as he had introduced maynard to Adam and Danny as well as Allowing tool to play their first show in his Loft in LA which lead to them getting Signed due to Green Jello having recently got signed as well. good Bit of music history behind it all really and William is a lovely Soul in person got a big old hug from him as well

    The story of the mothers coming before Solomon is about duality and free will. About truth and love versus greed. It suggests we all harbor evil in our hearts but wisdom and God’s light (in the form of an innocent child) calls us to be that higher part of ourselves. Anyway, great video. I really don’t hold this album in the same regard as the rest of Tool’s catalog, this coming from a 30 year fan. I’ve always wondered what it is about the songs that falls short for me and you have made me think it’s the music and production rather than the lyrics. Thanks
