This is the best interview I've seen them give. Normally Maynard is very deflective, but they talked extensively about their writing and recording process which is something I've always been curious about for this band.
A Tool record is an emotional experience beyond any other band I've ever listened to. Like Maynard said, "These songs are not 3 minute jingles." Tool's musical expertise makes most other bands look like amateurs.

Tool is the only band I can think of that has not released an album I didn't absolutely love. Also one of the very few bands that can put 5 years in between an album and not fade into obscurity.

Dude named his wine cellar Caduceus Cellars and his vineyard Merkin Vineyards. You may need to google caduceus and merkin to get my point. The man approaches life as the most serious joke.

I think many people are jealous of how well Maynard gets along with Danny (and probably the whole band) because he always seems so "exclusive" if you will.
Actually, I look at everything with an open mind. In case you didn't know, Maynard doesn't like being interviewed nor does he like to be around people, which is why he tends to stay at the back of the stage during Tool's live performances. He's not arrogant, he just doesn't like people and I don't blame him. I see nothing wrong with his candor in this video.
No. Wrong. Maynard Keenan is positioned to the side and back of the stage purely for artistic and musical effect, it has nothing whatever to do with him not liking being around others. In the early years, Keenan was at the front of stage like the majority of singers, however since the third album their stage dynamics changed and it reflects the fact that Keenan's vocals are just another instrument within the band, no more or less. This is integral to both the style and delivery of Tools brand of music. It essentially moves the emphasis away from Tool being a conventional group where the vocals are the dominant foreground element ( as in most bands ) to one where the ensemble of guitar, voice and rhythm section are equally represented and showcased. It's got nothing to do with any perceived isolating from other people. Give me strength!!!
I think it was difficult to express what it was like to cut 10,000 Days because for Maynard, he lost his mother, hence "Wing's for Marie" and the subsequent hidden "easter egg song". And if you really listen to the lyrics, that man HONORED his mother and I'm sure it was a difficult loss.

If you've followed Maynard's interviews and know him well enough through that, you know he'd never say something like that to be mean spirited.
You're right man, he certainly doesn't make it easy for interviewers at times but Maynard is definitely misunderstood. The reputation he has for being rude is unfair and inaccurate, he's just a quirky, eccentric character with a very dry sense of humour.
Maynard is a dick at times. He could have answered more frankly: "well, our songs are very involved and our process actually isn't that easy..." Simple, to the point, and non-mocking.
Absolutely, Maynard has a finely tuned knack for irony, sarcasm and black humour. Sure, those who don't see this trait are pretty dumb in fact. It's simply his personality, why would he change it
The band I was in did it the way Maynard explained. Someone would start off with their idea, jam it out and the rest of us would join in, and after we jammed it out for a bit and figured things out, we would collaborate afterwards and pick it apart piece by piece and decide what we liked, and what we wanted to change. It was great fun.
You want to really see how smart the guy is, watch him on Joe Rogan's podcast. What stands out for me is when Joe expresses his disdain and hatred for religion. Almost 2 hours later Maynard recalls an analogy a preacher told him once. Like an intellectual ninja waiting in the wings he owned Joe (who is super smart also). Frickin 2 hours later, he very subtly reminded Joe to not judge others, and you can tell Joe didn't even realise it happenned. Maybe in hindsight he did.
