    Sad that Jiu-Jitsu legend Carlson Gracie didn't follow the Gracie Diet and passed away prematurely at the age of 73. He could've lived another 20 years like his father Carlos and uncle Helio. I was watching a tribute video to Carlson. His students mentioned how Carlson ate at Chipotle's EVERY DAY. Chipotle even created a "Carlson Gracie" sandwich. Not good. That's why he AND his son Carlson Jr are both overweight.

      It's not that simple. They also work out several hours a day. Does the average person do this? No. If you worked out 3+ hours every day, in some cases even 6+ hours every day with the intensity they do, then you could nearly eat ANY diet and remain slim. None of them are actually muscular, just skinny. That might impress you, but it doesn't impress me.
      Also, their longevity is largely tied to their genetics. There are people who eat the typical American diet and live well into their 90s. There are people who eat very clean and don't live into their 90s. Don't underestimate that your genetics can override quite a bit of your lifestyle choices in either a good or bad way.

    @crazycasy Other way around concerning eating heavy. Heavier foods should be eaten earlier in the day as much as possible. They burn slower, so having the whole day to digest. Eating heavy later in the day and/or at night pretty much guarantees it will be sitting in your stomach overnight, when your metabolism is at its lowest.

    @vanity81 his father and uncle lived to be 95 and 94 yrs old by eating this way, and his uncle invented the diet. for over 65 years they have been eating like this. the basic principle of the diet is to not combine certain foods with each other to avoid upset stomach and promote healthy eating habits. and as far as the oranges go, he said if you eat an acidic fruit to not combine it with another one. so im sure 1 orange will not fill anyone up, but 15 would.

    this is a great diet for people who are already healthy and fit, if you are trying to lose weight this diet is actually horrible because it take it too easy on your metabolism. If you are trying to lose weight you want your body to be working at almost all times, and that means you need "Bad digestion" like he says. You want your metabolism to have to work to digest your food. You don't want to relax and chill.

But um, this diet has nothing at all to do with the way our bodies work. It's woowoo BS. A case of people thinking that because the Gracies are master grapplers, they mush be master nutritionist. McChulo seems to think the long life of two Gracie patriarchs must somehow be evidence of the diet being effective. Actually, that has more to do with genetics first and foremost, and secondly, fitness! They both rolled right up until the end. They were active! But this diet is nuts and has zero factual merit.

    It's not. It's based entirely on the anecdotal evidence assembled by their uncle Carlos and other family members. They point to the longevity of Helio and Carlos but leave out the fact that Carlos' son Carlson died of heart failure in the hospital at age 73, an overweight diabetic with kidney stones. • @bahilleli

    I love the Gracie's esp Rorion -- but some of the ideas behind this diet don't gel with science. It's unfortunate, as one thing I like about this family is that they do seem to be after "truth"...
    Eating smaller meals, incorporating alot of fruits and vegetables etc - yes, absolutely non controversial, well supported by science...
    As for the bit about pH -- it sounds and smells of classic pH woo - the unscientific belief that the food we put in our mouth has any bearing on the pH of our blood (it doesn't), or that there's a link b/w acidity and disease (not according to science!). Blood's pH is kept within a very narrow range of 7.35 to 7.45 (homoeostasis keeps it in this range, not food), deviation from this by even a few decimal points is a *medical emergency* that leads to rapid coma and death (called acidosis if pH goes below, alkalosis if pH rises). Furthermore, acidosis is never caused by food, it's most often due to repository issues (i.e. hyperventilation causes CO2 to build up in the blood; CO2 is acidic and thus can cause acidosis)
    Besides - acids are essential to life - proteins are just groups of amino ACIDS; Omega3/6 that are all the range are just 2 of the essential fatty ACIDS; heck, the A in RNA & DNA, the very building blocks of life, stands for Acid...
    Eating a high acid diet might affect the enamel on your teeth but nothing more.
    I think the Gracie's should keep the diet, but drop that little bit of 'woowoo' (it doesn't add anything!)

    • @bahilleli
      @bahilleli 9 лет назад +1

      Niko G
      Very easily: *Correlation does not equal causation*
      It might have been genetics, or the fact that they worked out almost every day of their life, or something in the air or the earth where they lived.... heck, the diet might play a role as well - it's rich in fruits & vegetables which we know is good for you... *None of that*, however, lends *a shred* of evidence to the misinformation about acids.
      The narrow range of blood pH is well understood and it is regulated by our *kidney's*, not by the food we ingest. _If food had the ability to shift blood pH levels, then every meal would be a potentially life threatening emergency (acidosis and alkalosis are very serious matters)_.
      It's the unscientific explanation I take issue with, nothing else.
      Be well.

      @Bak3dB3an 9 лет назад

      bahilleli He said that they lived til 94-95 yrs old, weren't you listening?
      There's a reason why a food to alkaline chart shows everything happens to be good for you is somehow alkaline and everything, that's not is somehow acidic.

    • @bahilleli
      @bahilleli 9 лет назад

      McChulo That's already been addressed in an earlier response to Niko G, correlation does not imply nor does it equal causation (please see that response) .
      Living to your 90s does not qualify one to rewrite the laws of physics or physiology. We know that food cannot affect our pH, else every meal would be a risk for life threatening acidosis or alkalosis. The fact is that neither condition has EVER been caused by it (in all of history) is proof positive. Reread that original response, it's the explanation I take issue with more than the diet itself.
      Be well...

    • @Bak3dB3an
      @Bak3dB3an 9 лет назад +1

      bahilleli It affects ph, but the results show over decades, after diligently eating alkaline foods or acidic foods. This is why peopl eget hip replacements, and some don't. Because acidic foods, take phosphorus from bones to neutralise acidity and you pee out the calcum from the phosphorus bond. Slowly loosing calcium. So alkaline balances acidic foods.

    gracie diet = a very health and high energy diet. But for a guy like me striving for an asthetic body like greg plitt I have to maintain a high protein, low carb diet. Greg Plitt always says sugar is the devil, if you juice an apple, youre better off to eat the pulp than the juice... im so confused with the gracies lol, go check out their high sugar smoothies bah god!

      Lots of hard core juicers don't eat the pulp because toxins adhere to it

    Judging by "results" in the sense you probably mean is known as following "anecdotal evidence". Scientifically, it's a badly flawed methodology. Falsification is a much more workable methodology and operates deductively. In other words, instead of looking for positive results (which you can almost always find) look to prove the theory INCORRECT in controlled experiments. If you can't, then it's a sound theory. This is the scientific method.
