In this beginner drum lesson I break down what I consider to be the easiest song on the drums. I have taught "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson to more drummers than I can remember. It's a fantastic first drum lesson to help you master your first song on the drums as a beginner drummer. A note about the chart from Tim Buell (who transcribed the part): "Hey all! You are 100% correct in the right way to write a multi-bar repeat. I do all the sheet music for Stephen and this is totally "my bad". In Finale there actually isn't really a way to write a "multi-measure" repeat beyond 1 or 2 bars that is A. Easy B. maintains the correct measure number count. Because of that, this is the "work around" although it isn't 100% correct. All that to say, you are right - but Finale makes easy things really difficult sometimes haha." Leave a comment below and let me know your thoughts!
This was the first song I learned 10 years ago and has since been the only song I know to play. I’ve been wanted to learn the play the drums for so long but been so afraid to continue for many reasons. Lack of confidence, what people think, my age now, expense for classes, etc. But my love for this instrument never died. Thank you for your videos because you have given me that spark to try again
As a teacher for 24 years I learned very quickly that 'easy' was a relative term. The second you tell someone it's easy, it become hard. More pressure, man, and that you can do without playing the drums.
Thanks for a lesson I already had but I love rewatching this stuff. Been playing for 15 years but really can't go wrong with relearning the basics. All hail the drums!
I can’t get drums because I don’t have the room for it and my parents would hate it at least my mom also I like the guitar more but I just got a vr headset and there’s a game called paradiddle and it’s the drums in vr so I’m going to try and learn it
i also couldn't get drums because i don't have enough room for it and i'm also a guitar player:) i got a vr headset aswell and tried paradiddle but it's definitely way different than playing actual drums, i've started taking drumming lessons at academys and when my parents started seeing my process they decided that they would make room for it and buy me a drumset, trust me playing drums is way more fun than playing the guitar in my opinion and maybe that's because playing the drums is new to me? i still lovee the guitar though
Great video, Stephen! Btw, you're either hitting the gym really hard or playing the drums non-stop, either way, keep at it! One suggestion, it would be nice if you would play the song both entirely and part by part, at least for people like me who don't know how to read the sheets, it's easier to maybe play along. Cheers!
Ive been drumming for around 2 years now, I never had the urge to want to play it, but I did. Now I enjoy it. I can't play most instruments because my fingers are rather long, ebndy and double jointed so drum was just about right for me. Although, drum does take a lot of effort, practice and slowing down, and even courage, its a fun instrument to play! I still count myself as a begginer, since I am still one. This was fun to watch.
Just started drumming a month ago, already learned Clint Eastwood by Gorillaz and am starting on Feel Good Inc. and Kids With Guns as well. Those songs are decent beginner songs to me, so I'd love to see you try those!
So glad I found this video and your channel. love this video, took lessons when i was 16, regretfully stopped, 38 now wanna get back into it. i remember Back in Black being pretty easy for a learner
My setup is pretty basic, Snare, hat, symbol, floor drum, and the base drum. My base drum has two drums on top of it. I learned Melting by Cuco, Clint Eastwood by Gorrilaz, the drum part of in the air tonight, the dun dun ching, and finally, the 21st century fox intro
I still cant believe Ndugu had been playing this super straight beat... Cos he was a monster fill player with the early George Duke and later Herbie Hancock.
From everything I can tell, theyre overdubbed. I used to teach that part but the way they overdubbed them makes this not a beginner song. And they're not necessary. So thats why they're not in there
I would at least mention them to a student, even though they may be overdubbed. It is a subtle effect, that always caught my attention, just like the unnaccented snare hit after the hats opening on the & of 4 as you demonstrated. Really gives the groove distinction. Great lesson!
I remember first song I ever tried on drums was paradise city guns n roses.. it's fairly simple...I got the basic techniques first then tried it. You didn't talk about staying in the pocket and how important timing is. Without timing, you can play anything semi well. In order to play an easy song, you must be in time and timing is one of the most important aspects of drumming. Yeah, i referenced all of my orchestral music from school and this is exactly how they noted long rests
The multiple bar repeats for four bars is dot, four diagonal lines, dot. The number of diagonal lines notates how many bars to repeat
The large bar with the 8 on the third mesure is supposed to mean silence...not to repeat the firsts bars
