  • As requested by members of the Facebook community "DIY Candle Making Beginner to Advanced", I decided to film my new technique for achieving smooth, glossy tops, great glass adhesion with ZERO wet spots or air bubbles, and a consistently attractive candle every single time!

    For your reference, I use IGI 6006 Parasoy wax, 8 oz. Jelly Jars, ECO 8 wicks, and Fragrance Oil which can all be found on Candlescience.com. Results may vary based on a number of factors, so be sure to adjust the steps accordingly for your specific type of wax and FO!
    Here are the steps in bulleted form:
    1. Place double layer foil onto the table/pouring surface;
    2) Wrap your vessel in 1 layer of foil;
    3) Preheat the jars with your heat gun;
    4) Heat wax to 195 (using a pesto pot), put into pouring pitcher;
    5) Add FO at 175;
    6)Stir for 2 minutes;
    7)Let sit for 30 seconds;
    8) Smack your pouring pitcher with a butter knife where the wax is filled to in order to pop bubbles and release any trapped air; then pour immediately.
    9) Right as the wax begins to become cloudy and builds a film on top, hit each jar for 5 seconds around the wick with the heat gun;
    10)Remove foil once candle has hardened and cooled;
    11)Trim wick, cap it, put candles in the original box, and let them cure.
    Thanks for reading/watching/listening! Please let me know what you think of this method, and how it works out for you!
    Also feel free to check out my Facebook business page, "Glass City Candle Company" for more of our scented shenanigans!

    Just wanted to say thank you! Using foil around the candles totally works - it keeps them from cooling off too quickly and thus forming sinkholes near the wick. I will also add this idea: be sure to use the shiny side of the tin foil against the surface of the candle. This will do an even better job of maintaining the candle's warmth for a longer period of time. You may have already mentioned this, but if you did, I missed it. :) I'm also glad that you mentioned the proper temperatures for adding the fragrance oil and for pouring - that's helpful for newbies, too, because it makes a big difference. Anyway, thanks again!

    Wow, I have to tell you, I am extremely impressed! I too use Candle Science but I stopped making candles about a year ago (for a few reasons) and thought I would start making them again since I have thousands of dollars in scents, wicks, jars, etc. It is so funny, I have nearly the same equipment that you do, LOL! I assume the reason for the foil is to help the jar maintain a certain level of warmth which is what contributes greatly to the finished (flawless) candle? This video was excellent, thank you so, so much! You've inspired me to start again. 😊👍

    Can I ask you what is the point of doing the foil around the candle? I am very new to this and this is the first time I’ve ever seen this but your candles look amazing and beautiful. Are use the same wax but I never ever thought of wrapping them in foil.

    • @josephagan7278
      @josephagan7278 4 года назад +6

      The foil helps to retain the heat so the candle can cool slower and more evenly which helps with proper adhesion! When the wax cools too quickly, it pulls super hard toward the center, causing sinkholes and poor adhesion. This method completely fixes that 😊

    • @glasscitycandlecompany5126
      @glasscitycandlecompany5126  3 года назад +3

      The tin-foil is used to insulate the vessel in order to slow down the cooling process. When the wax cools, it shrinks and grabs toward the center. When wax cools quickly, this process is exaggerated, leading to deep pockets of air (sinkholes). By slowing down the cooling process, you ensure that the wax has proper time to adhere to the inside of the vessel, and not shrink as dramatically, which helps prevent sinkholes! I heat the top of the candle to further prevent sink holes, as sinkholes are caused by uneven cooling, and if the top solidifies before everything else it can hide these problems. It also aids in removing any air bubbles that have risen out of the wax as it cools, which also helps with preventing sinkholes. Hope this helps!

I never understood why sometimes they came out just fine and other times they would hollow out in the center. I would try to go back and add more wax but it only helped once or twice. Hi Sabrina, thank you for your support! I am glad the video helped, you are very welcome :) Yes, I add the lids as soon as the candle has completely cooled. You can keep the wax in the presto pot indefinitely! I never fully empty it, I just add more wax as I go! Is there a ratio u like to use to achieve the best throw..??
    Thank u..
    Namaste

    Really nice. Thanks for sharing your method. Question do you reuse the foil around the jars? TIA

      @glasscitycandlecompany5126  4 года назад +1

      Yes I do! I replace them only as needed. After a dozen batches, I've only replaced 3 pieces of the foil. If you spill any wax on the foil, just use your heat gun and let the wax drip onto a paper towel

    Hello mate, thanks for the video and information share. Can I ask why you pour at 165, the recommended pour tempos 175. The reason I’m asking is that I’m new to candle making and I’m struggling with hot throw. They smell great when unlit but nothing on burning. I’m in the UK and don’t have access to most of the waxes and tools that you have access to. I can’t even get an EZ wick tool, candlescience won’t post to the uk and the only place that will is a seller on Etsy who wants 86 pounds for the tool and 113 pounds for postage!! She can do one, that’s what you call taking advantage of a situation.

    Oddly satisfying to see the bubbles come to the surface when you're tapping the side, lol. Are you using soy? I'd like to do beeswax but that stuff's gold these days. Do you have an opinion about blending maybe 10% bees to 90% soy? It's a great video, thx.

    I wish u would say _why_ u are doing stuff... _Why_ 200° ? _Why_ cover the jars with tin foil? _Why_ pre-heat the jars? _Why_ not pour it at 200° / _why_ wait for it to cool to 160°? _Why_ re-melt the tops? (u said "it works" ... it works to do what?)

  • @rebeccareyes7353
    @rebeccareyes7353 2 года назад

    Do the bubbles occur from mixing in the F.O.? I made 1 candle for myself and forgot to mix it into the wax but didn't notice if there were any. I burned the candle 3 days later and it worked fine except it was very glossy and minimal cracking on top. Thought it couldve been from not mixing the oil?? Thoughts?

    Hi I watch your wick making video..
    I’d like to know if you’ve ever tried tightly braiding the Cotton string? I saw someone do this many,many years ago.She said this will produce a longer burning wick. Do you know if that is true and /or safe?
    I would like to make seven day candles and I haven’t been able to find any info on that. Do you have any experience making these. If so, would you share how.

    Thank you for making this video. It's a great tip! I tried the aluminum foil wrap and hitting the pour pitcher with a utensil, and I do think it helps prevent holes and wet spots. However, I didn't have any luck with going back and re-melting the top with my heat gun - it did not dry smooth. I tried to replicate your results a couple times, but I seem to either be re-melting the tops too soon or I'm waiting too long. I'm using 4" diameter Libbey jars, which differs from yours of course so the approx 40 min cooling time isn't comparable. Right now the only way I can get a perfectly smooth top is to repour. I had a hard time seeing in your video exactly how much the top was set before you hit it with the heat gun.
    Any chance you can shoot another video with better closeups? Perhaps even put some dye so it's easier to see. Are you able to produce these results with large jars? Thanks for your help!

    • @glasscitycandlecompany5126
      @glasscitycandlecompany5126  3 года назад +2

      You're welcome, Karen! Thank you for your kind words. My method can be adjusted to work for basically any vessel, but it may require some experimentation on your part to get the most ideal results! The perfect time to remelt the tops is when you see the wax starting to pull up toward the wick in the center (similar to the Atari logo!). This may need to be done several times to achieve ideal results with wider diameter vessels such as yours. Once you work out what gives you the most ideal results, the process becomes a lot more simple with repetition :) As for the use of dye for more clarity, I choose not to use any dyes in my candles for personal reasons. I like the sleek look of the natural wax, and I try to avoid any additives/additional ingredients wherever possible. I have been able to produce these same results with larger vessels, and if I get the time in the next few weeks I'd be happy to make a video demonstrating the results I achieve with various vessels. I have my holiday release coming up soon, so I may not find the time at this moment. Thanks for your support!

    I can't imagine how much foil you would go through to continue to do that. I have a hot plate I keep on super low to just to hold a warm temp and I place my candles on there. Maybe it's the wax I use but I can pour them into a cold jar and they are just fine. No tunneling, no sink holes. I wonder why that is....because keeping vessels warm is a very important part of candle making. This is a great idea for anyone having problems I suppose. But just more cost in materials.

How do you prevent wet spot from forming During the shipping process. Since there are a lot of changes in temperature during the shipping process 1 would believe that they would form prior to this customer receiving it. Any advice?

      Thanks for subscribing! You are correct, the foil is used to insulate the jars in order to slow down the cooling process to ensure ideal glass adhesion and even cooling throughout the candle. I do not use any dyes unfortunately, but I have heard from a few viewers that this method also works great for preventing frosting!

    If I am not using a Presto pot and I am going to use the double broiler method would you go ahead and heat the wax to 195 and then remove from the heat and let stand on the counter to 175 then add the fragrance oil and finish all the other steps as you said (everything else will be the same) I just wanted to be sure you would heat it in the broiler and remove from heat let it cool off on the counter then I have the fragrance oil and everything else will be the same? 🤔
