she is such an amazing, AMAZING guitarist. she has a rare gift.. its called "Feel". its the dynamics, the way the note is played, the amount of force, the amount of vibrato... the timing of the next note. I haven't been this transfixed by a guitarist since Jeff Buckley. Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead has this innate gift too, but he rarely plays guitar anymore (and virtually never just a clean tone in 15 or more years). Jeff Martin from The Tea Party can play like this.....but its been a long time since he's played music this 'raw' (electric clean into a tube amp). Anna - you stand alone!!! one part Jeff Buckley, another part Blixa Bargeld... and thankfully.. the largest part ANNA CALVI. bless your beautiful soul.
Coldacre Johnny DOES play clean guitar even in their most recent stuff. just take a listen to the PERFECT arpeggio he does on the song "Nude". Gives me chills big big time. Not to mention his very recent project Junun, where he mostly plays a clean Les Paul. And his renditions of steve reichs's works and so on
Coldacre i totally agree, that playing just blows me away and i get goosebumps everytime. Her strumming is mesmerising !!how she hits those strings like circular movement. She is classically trained at the violin which is an influence. My Son is a guitarist & he 1st picked up the violin when he had some lessons at school, then he picked up my guitar as i played guitar which i Don't anymore. Anyway he loved it enough to start playing and drop his violin lessons. His violin tutor kept ringing up to get him back as he said he is brilliant on violin and he reckoned he was gifted & going places but no he wanted to do guitar !! He got a top degree at uni, now doing his masters and im so proud ☺
Coldacre Certainly agree...a little recommendation tho. If you know who’s Marc Ribot (or don’t) go definitely check out his band Ceramic Dog...I’ve seen them live a few months ago and it was the most intense musical experience I’ve ever had. They’re just so insanely off the hook/thrashing/out of control but at the same time very very nuanced and pro. I remember a great moment Marc turning volume knob all the way down on a Jaguar (so just the bare string plucking was heard) and the drummer (Ches) was licking his hands, and producing these “woooaaa” “weeey” sounds on the membranes of his drums...then all of a sudden a massive fuzz tone as he turned the knob back and the bassplayer just started some random shit noise on MiniMoog or sum. Also there was a Theremin virtuoso Pamelia Kurstin jammin with them. I.N.S.A.N.E!!!
I love her playing riders on the sea, look at around 2:32 how she strums which is amazing !!! And she shows what an accomplished guitarist she is as well as her phenomenal voice !! She ticks all the boxes for me ☺
NPR offers some of the most gorgeous little concerts ever. This Anna Calvi´s performance is exquisite and emotional and soul penetrating. Thank you guys!
Since I couldn't find em anywhere else, here are the names of the musicians Anna Calvi - Guitar/Vocals Mally Harpaz - Harmonium Daniel Maiden-Wood - Percussion
This was the most amazing performance I have EVER seen! She is amazing. Her bandmates are amazing. Her guitar is amazing. Her skill is amazing. Amazing amazing amazing.
одна из самых любимых поющих гитаристок. мне кажется она потрясная артистка. меня своей музыкой шокирует иногда, настолько художественно.... это даже выше профессионализма, это искуство .
How...HOW.....can any mortal explain or interpret effects that this Siren has had, & shall have over anyone hearing her artistry & vox talents......over auditory brain & life events of those within earshot......I've loved her since....long ago - OH, dearest Anna......
Very reminiscent of Ry Cooder's soundtrack to 'Paris, Texas' . Gorgeous sense of time in suspense, immense barren spaces, desert heat and a soul searching, lost in the vapors. Is it me or does she highly resemble Mick Jagger's daughter, Georgia ?
Some people like Dylan songs only as covers. I seem to have the same thing with Elvis. She does it beautifully, can't stand the original. But the thing that really gets to me is her guitar playing! Wonderful!
That first one reminded me of Villa Lobos Prelude No. 4. Tons of leadup... I actually was almost expecting a ripping fast arpeggio section. Still, she didn't disappoint with her unique flavor.
Sa version en français d'Aznavour pour Édith Piaf de Jezabel est à tomber par terre . Bien meilleure que celle en anglais . Au Transbordeur en live , j'en ai encore la chair de poule 🖤
So cool that she plays with dynamics and feel...but doesn’t make the goofy faces most guitarists do. (Like they’re in pain, or surprised by every note they play)
It's as if the first song was created entirely to become the theme song of a spaghetti western movie (and I mean that in the best way possible) directed by Quentin Tarantino. Seriously, man... that song BELONGS in a Quentin Tarantino movie!
I love this performance 5:04 CD fall is funny! Anna's hands scare me. 1:45 to about 2:00 Sure they're very skeleton in appearance, but they look unreal!
You are so very right in most of what you are saying. I was just somewhat offended and slightly dumbfunded by the idea that rock/folk/pop/metal vocalists would in no way have a dynamic range like a jazz crooner. It is true that a crooner often uses his/her amplitude much more fluently, but much like you are saying, this a problem with the mic work in general, and it has nothing to do with "rock singers" or some sort of special crooner technique.
Refreshing to hear the sound of someone letting a guitar breathe.
Love this comment
MrCopperthwaite and her voice!

One of the most diverse-sounding artists I've heard in a long time...I think ever. Speechless. Can't wait to see her in November!
What a great guitarist!
I almost cried before the first 1:30 and I have no idea why. This rocks.
A profound genius has risen among us all. Welcome to our radars.
I loved "Jezebel." The accordian-like instrument added a nice dimension to the piece.
I'm an old 74yr old guitar player. I'm a fan. These kids are unique, Brilliant.

I've just discovered you, Jezebel. It's never too late, they say, and I concur, but I wish I had met you in 2012.

❤
Baked af and killing it. Casting some deep magik for sure.
such a great album ,so good in all aspect ,when it end i want more and start it again ....
Incredible. The last time I saw the piano type instrument being played was by Nico of the VU in the 70's.
This is where dreams are produced, like babies, with LOVE!
Some people like Dylan songs only as covers. I seem to have the same thing with Elvis. She does it beautifully, can't stand the original.
But the thing that really gets to me is her guitar playing!
Wonderful!

I like the way she hit the drummer on the head at 5.15 to start him off.
A true original which seems to be quite rare to me.

Chatarrrro, carretiable, ecxelente!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Sa version en français d'Aznavour pour Édith Piaf de Jezabel est à tomber par terre . Bien meilleure que celle en anglais . Au Transbordeur en live , j'en ai encore la chair de poule 🖤

Marvelous tone.

Seriously, man... that song BELONGS in a Quentin Tarantino movie!
I always thought "Dead" by the pixies would be an amazing Tarantino film opener with firey credits speeding in from the right!
dmbassa
Or a Jim Jarmusch movie
It's in Peaky Blinders, and that's where it belongs 😊😊😊
When you accidentally predict Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Es terriblemente hermosa!
I love this performance
5:04 CD fall is funny!
Anna's hands scare me. 1:45 to about 2:00
Sure they're very skeleton in appearance, but they look unreal!
There is an actual skeleton inside there
*horror*
This chick rocks! \m/
This girl is a beast! :)
dangerously beguiling worlds at her fingertips...
TORNA A SURRIENTO!!!!
She reminds me a lot of early Polly Harvey and for me that is a good thing
early PJ couldn't play guitar like that. neither could she now ;)
@@coldacre and this "new pj harvey " lazy comparison got so old already. Anna is unique in every way.
Maybe I should try listening to it while stoned.
+bradh716 Stoned to death.
stop compairing her, and let her be her own. MOTHER MARIA !!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!
Ufffff..... MAMI !!!!!! 🇲🇽
Natural artist

Nice!!! I love the feel of the sound--or is it the sound of the feel? Whichever, it was a nice show.
Great Telecaster player....
*gets chills down spine* amaaazing :D
LOVE
I had no idea she could shred like that!
You made a mistake, it’s not River but Rider on the first song’s name
Sensational.
FUCK YES. This is truly magnificent.
her song is actually called Rider to the sea, not River.
WOW! Thats all I can say!
@mikebee02
And your majestic life changing music has cured the world into a blissful orgy of chords.
Ti Amo *______*
Great stuff, obvious Buckley influence
I'm in love...............
very nice.
What an amazing accordion or what that is!!!? Any one know what that instrument is called?
Mr Price Harmonium
Bravo
