I never realized until this performance that she sings loud enough to be heard over two saxes. I've been playing music and sometimes singing for 25 years, there are very few songs I can sing that loud, and they're all 'scream'-y grunge, etc. tunes, and I'm a baritone/tenor man and LOUD. That's awesome. I bet she can't use some mics, that's wild. And her articulation and dynamics are AWESOME.
Her voice blows me away. I saw an interview with her where she talks about her voice training. The girl is LOUD!
The way she sets up that percussion at the start is mind-blowing ...
Definitely one of those people so used to looping and writing solo that they hear all the other parts in their head to play to first.
She could be a drummer some day.
She is a drummer.
Tuneyards are still so underrated, like in terms of experimenting with pop music I feel Merrill has done so many interesting things that's you just can't find other artists doing
its cuz its bad music most people are trying to sound good
prueba un mordisco de la música de Juana Molina

This holds up well because SHE'S A FuCKING GENIuS.
That riff on You Yes You makes me feel like the first little sprig of a plant emerging from the cold ground on the first days of spring
Your description is delightful! I have to come back to the tiny series to hear all the nuances they studio out in her albums. Regardless she was one of my first exposures to Tiny Desk. Thanks!
@@pameladawson7748 Thank you! yeah I am working my way backwards starting from new ones and exploring the older ones now. Tiny Desk is a gift!
god her voice is so unique i cant get enough of it
The word "amazing" is inadequate. What a set.
I'm sitting alone - and I actually applauded at the end of that.
I'm an old grunt - and I've only just discovered Tune yards - wow. Just wow.
This is genuinely wonderful stuff.
I applauded too!
Me too!
hurricane of applause !
***** It most certainly was not....
Yes, awesome. Maybe check out DVA, very similar approach and make style: ruclips.net/video/XQ5TX5kAa9k/видео.html
This is like those people are messing around with whatever they have to make noise and turned out to be a great music. I like that so much.
years go by but I just keep finding her, she touches my soul.
Always blows my mind to see that voice come from her, truly amazing.
What a fucking magical being!! This is self confidence and creativity at its finest.
100% agree! (influenced by Joan Armatrading and Joni Mitchell, no doubt) SPECIAL STUFF
can NPR please invite her back again!
that's what joy looks like
a blank face and no emotion?
Aaron Landau Watcha talkin bout Willis?!?
Nicolás García Lieberman
he barely smiles. Her face in the majority of this video is the definition of emotionless.
Aaron Landau wha?
time to bring back tUne-yArDs for another one. This band has only gotten more impressive in the last decade. Incredible musicians and songwriting!
Love them love her. Her voice is transformative. And their music / instrumentation is so beautiful. I am shocked they managed to recreate their song so well here. Makes me love them more.
Right? My brother and I were curious as we both like them and it’s so nice to see that they actually set everything up live
Her voice makes my box a bit bigger. note: I'm a small man trapped in a box
LOL!
Ok I chuckled
I'd rather not compare her to anyone. You hear the influences yet her style and approach is unique. Not to mention her sense of time and beat are impeccable.
that is magical soul healing music, past lifetimes n' shit
This version of Doorstep is simply magical.
the swiftnes in witch she makes thosse loops is really impressive
Such whichcraft
My, her voice: Special. It's rhythmic and melodic, which is rare. She sounds like Roberta Flack, with that thick, high pitched bottom and soaring top.
ohmygawd. ages later & still my favourite.
Merrill Garbus' work is perfect. Fight me. 😍
When you thought music and creativity were dead, along comes this wonderful woman. I honestly think she's genius.
Tim Anderson nah the music industry is just fucked in America at least
There’s tons of creativity out there
Just not on the radio
she’s able to juggle all ten wheels turning in her head at one time, meanwhile it’s usually all i can do to barely get my one wheel moving at all
its easy when ur music sucks
this tune forever!!! "if home is where the heart is baby, my home is inside you..'
Theres no sound out there like her heavenly voice and that amazing band. This is truly a blessing of a performance and one that haunts and sticks in your mind after. Thank you NPR in 2020 we need brilliant, original, and beautiful music like this.
Wow.... Utterly Wow.... Been awhile since a simple musical performance has left me speechless. Complex simplicity... Beautiful!!
She is powerful!!!!
This is incredible, absolutely hooked right from the start. I'm incredibly grateful to NPR Tiny Desk Concerts for introducing me over the past week to Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Lucius, K'Naan and now tUneyArDs. How much insanely good new music can one man take in one week. Inspiring.
Excellent music and refreshing sound! Thank you 'Tune-Yards" and continue to do what you are 'gifted' to do!
I think most people are so used to their preferred genre of music, whether it be Pop, Rock, Rap, Jazz, Country, etc, that you can't be open minded to something different. I don't like all styles of music but I respect artists like this who can create something unique. I love this band, and hope they keep making more music. It's refreshing to here something different.
i could watch "doorstep" everyday i think. its just perfect. such musicianship but so laid back
I love the saxophonist on the right cradling his saxophone and swaying emphatically to the beats when he isn't playing. Artists who love music, even regardless of constant involvement, are wonderful. Almost as wonderful as this mind-blowingly awesome set.
god damn shes good at using that loop pedal!! for anyone who's ever tried its not easy to get the timing right. and if you mess up once you have to start all over.
i think merrill has created some of the most original music in a long time.
Perfect mix of joy, brains, music, and fun
HALLELUJAH❤
If the other 3 musicians weren't there, it wouldn't matter. Merrill would just be the other 3 musicians
This band is great and Merrill Garbus is a real artist. She shared this music with me and expanded my tastes in music, tastes that I never knew I had. It's like she knows me better than I know myself. She has inspired me. Maybe the world is worth engaging.
Come to Chicago!!! I only just found you by lovely circumstance. This song is anthemical! Wow.
I will make a nuisance in the front row.
One of the best Tiny Desk performances I have seen to date. Just straight awesome!
impressive voice and rhythmic skills. would like to enjoy her live...
Just beyond brilliant.
Full of fun and playful rhythms and breaks, beautiful powerful lyrics from our Merrill. Sings with passion.
She belts it out. What a voice
I'd like to see them live
I watch this at least 6x a year. Probably the video I return to most. Incredible sounds, vibes and soul.
Thanks to Jacob, This is dope. 🔥
i wish i could figure out why i cry when i hear this music...
either from joy or surprise i am not sure.
beautiful.
thank you, Merrill and group.
Johan P Me too!!!Wild.
Here too
That chick has awesome layering skills. There's a resemblance to Bjork's musical style, but at a much hyper and spastic pace.
Wichi M
I enjoyed this so much. I couldn't help but start tapping my feet and moving my shoulders to the music haha. I used to be one of those people who would always say that music nowadays is pure shit, when in reality you just have to look a little harder and not search Top 40 stations. I've discovered so many amazing bands and artists through the Tiny Desk and KEXP performances... Finding new, good music is so refreshing 😊
Merrill and her musical way gives me smile cramps, spontaneous laughter and tears of JOY!!!!!!!!!!
Wow. It's not very often that I get my socks knocked off at a TDC. Way above average, this. Keep on truckin' yArDs.
I cannot stop coming here - she - they - are awesome!
Every now and then and act will come along to challenge the notion that everything's already been done before. Have people played loop pedals like instruments before? Sure. Some masterfully. This is, however, something entirely unique and other from anything I've heard or seen. I can't help but applaud her/their creativity and how well they march to that CRAZY, different drummer. I find myself smiling at a number of moments in this video.
Bring them back!!! I saw a live recording from a couple of months ago and they only sound richer and more developed with age and experience!
Her voice is incomparable. Brilliant!
Well, it is comparable to singers from Mali, whom she's clearly riffing off of...
i bought both albums based on this performance...
Still love this set with a passion
Doorstep is a fun song. They all sound like a beach or just vacation in general.
I love her and her uniqueness!
I own a wonderful stereo system,I have owned it for nearly 20 years.
I placed TuNeYards latest album (at the time),and it died.
To this day,I have not heard this album.
This stereo, the one that took, and never gave back,it sits, like a temple of waiting, but for what?
I ,to this day, many years later, crave to hear it,my temple will not give up its prize
Often times,I stare at this now silent temple,it stares back at me.
We have come to an agreement.
It would seem that sometimes, music is silence.
This is the first Tiny Desk I've seen where you can actually see the audience somewhat.
She was just born to make music... this is crazy awesome...
Simply wonderful.
So it has been 10 years since this video came out and even though I'm a huge fan of tiny desk, and I love how far they've reached, I still believe this is the best concert of all. I love tUne-yarDs and thanks to this video I discovered their wonderful work. Thanks for this, tiny desk and npr music. Hope we could see tUne-yarDs again in one of your new videos!
Mmmh best Tiny Desk Concert has to be one of the toughest things to achieve in the music business! So many incredible performances. I dont know, my vote probably goes to Tedeschi Trucks Band, their set is breathtaking imo
She's so amazing!!
this is just brilliant.
This song makes me want to hug my Mom and thank her for helping me cultivate a good taste in music. This is such a beautiful performance!
Today I discovered the tUnE-yArDs......let me rephrase that, Today I fell in love with the tUnE-yArDs! she is fantastic
finally saw them live this past august!!! merrill's looping is pure magick
what does looping mean. ive seen it in a few comments but dont know what it means.
The group is sick! Last song is so awesome!
wow, so lucky I found this, just great arranging and badass musicians!
Their creativity hits my soul just right, it’s incredible what four people can do w/ the right talent.
Anyone can see she is one of the most beautiful people on the planet, I don't know why anyone would say otherwise?????
That hit the spot.
I agree it's essentially African music (what isn't, in pop & rock & jazz?). But if you dismiss because of the colour of her skin then you're missing out on what this sparkling soul is offering us.
she's AMAZING
A few years back, Stewart Copeland (police fame) pack his gear and recorder and went to Africa in search of unique sounds for inspiration for his next album. The Lp starts off with a sample of one of the tribes he met. All I can say it was powerful to hear the complex rhythms built into the harmonies. Then he proceeded to make songs supposedly built on what he witnessed. My opinion is he missed the mark in trying too heavily to westernize what he witnessed. Garbus in tuneyards I think nails many of these ideas with her multi layering of her voice and simple rhythms and yet brings a modern multistyle mashing. Very creative
ChatGPT recommended this band to me based on my love for Rubblebucket and a few others. I’ve heard a couple of their songs before, but wow, still very impressive. The last song is magnificent.
Think about that, a freaking AI robot told you to look up something and you did. No, there's no danger in that at all...
@@Trea-pl4xr Hey man, it’s best to get on the good side of the future AI overlords before they actually take over.
God, where has this group been all my life...amazing...
Amazing still.
Seeing "My Country" live looks like one of the most rewarding things I could ever do.
Her timing is absolutely pristine.
the ear on this woman. magnificent!
Merrill is amazing and awe-inspiring.
Fabulous grooves, and refreshing musical thinking "outside the box" so to speak. There's talent and then...there are the supertalents. This band has got it all goin' on..
Fantastic. Boombasstic
This is so good. No more to say.
I heard TUne-YArDs many years ago on polish radio and since then I love her voice and talent. Magnetic.
she is too adorable
She is fabulous from start to end... full of great joy perfect timing, innovative, joyful, so many wonderful subtle tiny parts and she pulls it all together....Im in awe....:-0
still can't stop listening it.
Pandora introduced me to 'my country' awhile back and I fell in looovvee with this band. So amazing to see that their genius is only amplified live. So many layers of melodic goodness upon which my ears may feast.
Beyond crazy!! But ever so coool!
i cant stop listening to this & it gets better every time!
Wow her voice is incredible. What a refreshing sound.
you are so right.
Thank you for sharing your uniqueness with us. Be yourself.
Pretty stoked to see these guys along with David Byrne tonight!
Is she singing LIVE? How is this humanly possible? She's got VOLUME
Check out the Tiny Desk Concert that Buika did if you like powerful voices. :)
Merrill can really project her voice. If you've never listened to her earlier projects, you should. I have a full album on my channel of her when she was with the band Sister Suvi. The song 'Golden' is a great example of the power of her voice. She has some crazy powerful parts in that song.
David Cross will always be my favorite bass player
