Courtney Barnett: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Courtney Barnett can tell you a story like she's your best friend - provided your best friend is a funny poet with an Australian accent. Listen to "Avant Gardener," an autobiographical account of trying to turn a life around through gardening, only to be foiled by a severe allergic reaction. The tale that follows at this Tiny Desk Concert, "History Eraser," is a ramble in an alcohol-fueled dream state; it features some of the best lyric-writing in music today. Here's a sample from that song:
"I found an Ezra Pound and made a bet that if I found a cigarette I'd drop it all and marry you. Just then a song comes on: "You can't always get what you want" - The Rolling Stones, oh, woe is we, the irony! The Stones became the moss and once all inhibitions lost, the hipsters made a mission to the farm. We drove by tractor there, the yellow straw replaced our hair, we laced the dairy river with the cream of sweet vermouth."
The only downside for a fan like me is that these songs have been kicking around my head for more than a year. As she played them, I found myself hoping for something new, too. And so it was that Barnett graced the Tiny Desk with a brand-new tune, not yet on a record, about a suburb near Melbourne known as Preston; it's a song about house-hunting that she appropriately calls "Depreston." The song is thoughtful, acerbic and funny, just like the woman who sings it. --BOB BOILEN

The subtlety of the turn in Depreston gets me every time. How she goes from funny and sardonic to sweet and sad in a few seemingly simple lines. That kind of observation and writing is rare.
the canisters for coffee, tea and flour
"This song is about house hunting" then why am I crying courtney???
"paramedic thinks im clever cause i play guitar - i think she's clever cause she, stops people dying" hahahahahahahahahahahaa
far out this is some great music
Amazing. Unique. I like it.
thats my fav lyric everrrr
My favorite line by far
One of my favorite lyrics! Along with her "Give me all your money, and I'll make some origami honey!"
I love her stream-of-consciousness lyrics, they are like beat poetry, so wild and free flowing, that if you aren't picking up on what she is laying down, it might not make much sense, but if you do follow her words, she is a lyrical genius!
Conor Hampton totes totes totes. I agree Mann 100%
well said!
Dylanesque
At first naive, then disarmingly pointed, and finally, unforgettable.
Makes Bob Dylan look normal. She's amazing.
It is so awesome to scroll through a youtube comment section and not read any negative comments. How refreshing!!!
the old boys from the muppets could pop up at any time ha ha
She's just sitting there telling you a story and a guitar happens to be on her lap with strings bussling through her fingers, its seamless, effortless, a breth, beautiful moment. few humans can do this this beautifully and humbly
"Depreston" at 8:43. Just leaving this note for myself. Superb performance!
It always takes me somewhere
Yep. I keep coming back to this song over the years!
Absolutely BRILLIANT Song!!! My daughter has been making plans to leave home soon and buy a house with her bf.
This song makes me emotional thinking of the day she'll be going.
@@theselector4733 yeah it comes back to me when I think of house hunting and all the compromises you immediately have to make "You said we should look out further" before you even get to whether the garden faces north or south!
I know it's said already but her lyrics really are ingenious. There's so much subtlety, but not in a pretentious, inaccessible way. She's an amazing talent
She's so lovely and natural. No pretentiousness of any kind.
Its totally pretentious.
this is most pretentious thing ever
@@lukasdobransky5930 How so?
Haha what about the guitar
she's a pretentious, feminist, disgusting chick that got lucky by looking frumpy
I absolutely LOVE the acoustic version of Avant Gardener. Prefer it actually. Just beautiful.
I completely agree! I have been looking for a version that even compares and I just can't find it. The way she ends it is so damn emotional and gripping. I could listen to it all day long.
Electric Lady Avant....check it and out!! Courtney plays and it's the BEST VERSION EVER
The lost child of Paul and Linda
wrong comment
its not acoustic
comin back round to this set all these years later... that melody from avant gardener still gets me.
Ugh just want to pump some fresh 2021 juice into this comment section for those who are just getting into Courtney for real and were so pleased to discover a tiny desk when gone searching on RUclips. This was such a treat.
A+ for song.
A+ for guitaring
A+ for great hair!!
and A + for the green Eyes
the baddest mullet in all the land
A+ all around.
@@bernardverbauwen9225 One green eye and one blue eye.
True beauty always shines through
one of the most poetic story-telling singer songwriters of the last few years, super dope. and that accent, love it
yeah totally 👊
What accent?
@@Paul_VK3HN Aussie accent my dude
@@blakeusvon Strewth!
Genius!!! We need an updated CB tiny desk!
I wish she would do an album in this style, just her and her guitar, it would be absolutely amazing.
Agreed
Creatively soulful, rock and roll spirited, Courtney's music draws me in and spits me out feeling a little more alive than where I was before.
+1
really ? it puts me to fucking sleep.
Really? It pisses me the hell off
+Fark acquired taste, above certain people (:
OK, calm down.
Her music sounds great with the rest of her band, but when she plays solo like this it really highlights the quality of her lyrics! I had no idea the wordplay in these songs was so good until I listened to this.
She's so fun to listen to. I love her lyrical style. Look forward to more music from her.
The way she throws out lyrics is so nonchalant but so robust and earnest. 2 thumbs up, 5/5 stars
love her Lou Reed style, she is great! hope she comes to Buenos Aires again some time. her show was really great.
fell in love with Courtney Barnett when they started playing Dead Fox on the radio. she's so genuine and funny, I love her work so much.
I ignored this video for so long not willing to give it a listen..glad I finally watched it because I'm in love w her
she has more to say in one song than most do in a whole album. ITS BRILLIANT!
Got so excited when this came up on my feed! She played tiny desk with 2 hours of sleep. What a champ!
Courtney has a natural cadence and a depth of simplicity; guitar work is awesome.
I met her after sneaking backstage at (location undisclosed) She couldn't have been cooler about it. We chatted for a minute and laughed. One of her band mates brought a sharpie for her to sign the only thing I had on me which was my hat. Super down to earth chill person. Love her.
"Its a Monday. Its so mundane."
"You said we only live once, so we touched a little tongue and instantly I wanted to."
The play on words is so fucking good in these songs. A toothless bum could be reading this poetry and I would be still be aroused. Courtney Barnett is like some genius-poet-storytelling-travelling-minstrel from Australia.
ShinSkillet "Reminds me of the time. When i was really sick and i. Had too much psuedoefedryn and i Couldn't sleep at night" holy shit
I friggin' LOVE that line..."I'm not that good at smokin' bongs..." - classic.
Just "discovered" Courtney this week and loving every one of her tracks. Amazing stuff!
@nameface6934 just listening to this now... very cool indeed - thanks!
@nameface6934 Lonely Gimmick are my new favourite thing :) so many great tracks!
Haven't heard a true and creative voice like this since crying to p.j. Harvey's dry in 1994. Except for maybe grace potter. When I heard that second song on the radio I was in love, but seeing it live in that setting w/ no band was fabulous. I pictured her to be in her late 30s. Especially cause of the witty lyrics. Great great stuff.
It's inspiring as a songwriter to see someone make such great songs about simple topics.
This woman saves me. No joking, just had a terrible breakdown and my first instinct after that was playing her music. I hope I get to meet her one day.
Can't stop listening to this set every few days. Love it so much.
The way the amp and the sound from the f holes mix is so magical
She sings the loveliest stories.
Nothing comes that close to bliss these days. Tks for that. Peace out to all involved muchly!
Courtney Barnett was my artist of the year.
True music.
What's your address buddy?
No doubt!
Listening to her makes me feel so much less alone. Like there's people out there like me, somewhere.
I hadn't heard Depreston until the Corner gig I went to on Thursday night; it was one of my favourite songs of the night. She's the best!
I cant understand how anyone could not watch and listen to her and not fall madly, deeply, hopelessly in love with her just as I have done the very first time I saw her. Cant wait to see Courtney at Osheaga festival in Montreal in August.
I love the way she fits her lyrics in with mellow guitar rhythms, this was really pleasing to my ears.
As an Aussie I think Courtney is the best artist to come out of the Australian music scene in ages, simply awesome.
I seriously can listen to her sing & play guitar FOREVER. I feel so at peace listening to her :) thank you Courtney for making such amazing music. Thank you thank you thank you. Namaste! 🙏🏻
She’s great both live and recorded. I must say I just realized all the more that just really relaxing and listening to this song, I actually chuckled and laughed some. She’s actually very witty and funny in this song. She’s both fun and immensely talented. I really loved hearing her chords. they’re so lovely. Her voice sounds so sweet and talented. Thank you Courtney for blessing us with your music. God continue to bless you in it always. :)
A great story teller with an eye for detail.
2018 and still enjoying CB, saw her & Kurt Vile perform together on a late night talk show last winter and was instantly hooked. Such a great addiction!
Father John Misty and her for the lyric-writing award for 2015!!!
Cole Berggren amen!
Cole Berggren Sufjan Stevens should be in that conversation as well ;)
Cole Berggren Chris Maw and Chris Greene - you guys are all 110% correct!!
Cole Berggren literally both the only two I've been listening to recently !
the way she sings and plays is just bliss
I just enjoy her musical aesthetic (if that's even a thing). It's organic and unpretentious.
It is. It is a thing.
Right
Courtney was the first show that we saw after COVID. I was absolutely over the moon that I was going to see her . I never thought that I would. It was amazing of course.

Thanks for people like her who can create beautiful music and lirycs
Man that guitar sounds great!
Best new artist by a mile, and those lyrics are just everyday poetry at it's best. I just don't have enough superlatives to describe her.. Oh, just have to say that I actually prefer this version of History Eraser to the album version. Just a shame she didn't play Lance Jr which I just love..
Tomnedreb she has a few versions of that song on Spotify. Go check her out there
Tomnedreb not even fucking close , Liz Phair did it 30 years ago and a million times better it’s 2018 ! Big Thief best new band in decades
Tomnedreb Saids Who? You? Anyway who are you? Just how many coloured women who can actually sing don’t get a look in?
+Virginia Binks LMAO YOU HAVE TO BRING RACE INTO EVERYTHING SMH
C2302 This is the typical racist reply one would expect from someone like you. What are you highlighting here anyway? The point I am making it is always the same old tired record company manufactured hacks that get a foot up!
she's like the most perfect! best version of avant gardener!
I usually don't really care about the musicians, only about the music, but she's so damn natural and looks so honest and humble. Idk, she just seems like a really nice person. Oh and btw her music is awesome as well.
This music! This girl! These lyrics! Someone tell me why isn’t music like this on the radio?
Until seeing this, I never understood the phrase "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts." This takes me back 50+ years to first the time I heard "Ballad of a Thin Man"
Love rewatching this
The flow of Depreston reminds me so much of "Ceremony" by Joy Division
Thank you! I was trying to figure out who that was. It was driving me crazy. You fixed it, Thanks.
Exactly that!
Thank you for pointing it out...I hadn't made the connection, no its so obvious...
Love her music! What an amazing performance!
She was nominated for it and she has my vote for the Grammy for best new artist.
Did she win? I was out of the country. ;-)
How is she so good, her delivery and cleverness floors me
She's going to be huge....
+ZambranoC7
"Uncool to like her because she's so popular", poetry
One of the best performances I’ve ever seen.
Love that she sings in her own accent.
@Samuel Powell Thanks, I checked it out. Cool.
She is soooo good playing guitar. Awesome 👍
I can't explain the euphoria I feel when I listen to this voice and your songwriting- such great stuff. Cheers!
I absolutely adore Courtney, I'm still kicking myself over the fact I missed my chance to see her live when she was nearby. At least we get a new album from her and Kurt Vile together pretty soon!
I cant stop listening to this. So good.
Same
DAMN! Why am I just now hearing about her?! singing right from the soul!
I hope she wins the Grammy her music is fantastic!
I got to meet her at fortress festival in Ft. Worth TX. She truely is great. Very down to earth. I love her, she is super cool
"In my brain i rearanged the letters on the page to spell your name"
Wow, awesome line!
I'd heard about her several times, but first time I heard her voice, well. I love that voice. Unique, as all voices are, but so is her expression of that voice. I like it a lot.
Brilliant. She's a genius ... and my new favorite influence. ..
I can't remember what song of hers I was listening to, but she had a lyric that said, "I replicate who I admire"...
Well. .. COURTNEY- I'm a singer/songwriter and it's been a long time since I heard another FEMALE songwriter that I admired enough to be influenced by. .. (usually it's the boys) ... but you've just inspired the hell outta me!
YOU'RE A GENIUS!!
A genius like Bach, Mozart, Paganini , Django , Emily Remler ? Or is everyone with some talent a genius and is everything amazing ?
No. .. everyone is NOT a genius and everything is most certainly NOT amazing. .. I can understand why you might feel the need to say that, given the disgusting OVERUSE of adjectives like that these days. ... however I am not one to throw those words around lightly, so please be sure your frustrations are aimed at the right person/people.
The fact is I DO think this girl is a genius IN HER GENRE - which is NOT COMPARABLE to Mozart or Bach. And I can't remember the last time I used that word to describe a current singer/songwriter, so again - your accusations are SORELY MISPLACED. I can count on one hand the singer/songwriters from this decade that I would describe as such.
So please, take your need to diminish elsewhere.
You must have been listening to "Don't Apply Compression Gently" then. In case you wanna know :-)
Gina Paiano so many elipses...
Evan Blamilton ... (!) Admittedly, I am quite fond of these and I absolutely overuse them! It's one of the many ways I exercise my rebellious nature and ever-present need to BREAK THE RULES!
... I do it and I own it. :-)
This band gave an awesome performance at union transfer in PA. They can really rock. Go seem 'em live.
Depreston- How do you get all that music out of just one instrument? I love that song and this woman's talent.
She’s just so great and such a genuine human being
Such a great story teller.
pure gold
"she thinks im clever 'cause i play guitar/ i think she's clever 'cause she's stops people dying" :)
I knew a gal who also stated she was not very good at smoking bongs.....we settled for joints. Wish this music was around back during those days.....Cheers Everyone

ty, friend :))
Love love love this acoustic version of the songs. So excited for her!! hope she gets a ton more exposure.
I could listen to this version of depreston on repeat for the rest of my life.
It's so amazing hearing an awesome talented guitarist and singer so clearly describe living in Melbourne's inner-north suburbs where I live.
I'm in love with her music. She's perfect for ppl like me who always need a fresh Sheryl Crow type in her life.
I lived in Preston a while back, in a cul de sac, It sounded like she was describing my old house for a moment
Her laugh is quite possibly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard...
in love with this woman and her music
Love the band-aid
This has to be my favorite tiny desk concert ever and I really think these songs work even better in their stripped down acoustic form. I prefer them to the album versions actually. Let's not forget that clanky guitar tone with the touch of delay, it's just beautifully human and conforting. Thanks so much for this!
Such an awesome artist!
Some of the best lyrics I've heard...wonderful.
Just caught you on Fallon(on a torrent, I'm behind a few episodes).
Thought it was absolutely brilliant. Ran to RUclips immediately. Really excited to take the rest of your work in 👍
Amazing. So glad she is coming back through the states later this summer...ticket booked. Thanks ASC crew.
2:17, she makes emphysema into a verb. Funny and brilliant.
amazing performance. Watched at least 100 times and gets better every time. Not everyone can deliver on this level this early in the day, but Courtney does. Great songwriting and amazing guitar sounds.
"I flew in from Chicago. did a show last night....2 hours sleep"...and she looks and sounds great. Imagine if she had gotten 4 hours sleep!!! Love her to death. A female Bob Dylan, but unique in her own right. Love to all...
