Just wanted to pin this here: As a new player, they recently changed it so you DONT need to have a level 60 character to do Chromie time. Now you just need to be level 10 Also as far as I know, they no longer force you to do Battle for Azeroth. Should just be able to pick whatever expansion timeline you want. P.S I'm thinking of doing an updated chromie time video. If anyone has any specific things they want me to address/answer in it, let me know. I'll make it in a few weeks and try to do some more research on issues people are having with understanding it and what not

I haven't watched yet. but anyway. I haven't played since 2014, I've just started playing 4 days ago, got my level 60 (i haven't got dragon flight) And i have never been so confused and baffled by a game before, I couldn't understand why I could only do BFA dungeons, I couldn't understand why item levels were lower in heroic and mythic dungeons along with worse stats, i couldn't understand why heroic dungeons weren't in my dungeon finder as i have quests to do in heroic dungeons. almost all the info i have read online is outdated which i didnt know, I turned to reddit and got multiple different answers which only lead me to ask more questions..I've been told chromie time kicks you out at level 61, I've read it kicks you out at level 50, I'm level 60 i can use chromie time but i dont get the pop up screen i had at level 30+ (when i first discovered chromie time) i have to talk to her and ask where i should choose and i can select from there, after i select a time i can still only do bfa dungeons, is this because im level 60 and not 50 or what? do i need to cap my level at 50? how do people farm for transmogs in older content? do they have to have a character locked at level 50 to be able to do old dungeons?
@RyanRoberts-qf5et hey I totally understand your confusion 😭😭 it sucks they've made it this overwhelming. Chromie Time kicks you out at level 60. You'll be having a good time questing at 59, then boom you hit 60 and it will teleport you out and back into org/sw. I personally tested leveling from 59 to 60 in my video and showed how it does this :) To farm older content for transmog, there's 2 ways to do it. Before level 60, I'd recommend talking to chromie and have her set you to present time. Which essentially means chromie time is off, which means dungeons don't scale to your level. You'll still need be a high ish level (like obviously you're not gonna solo dungeons at level 15) so you'll wanna be I would say at least 40-59 range. But that's just one option, and not the best option. The vast majority of the player base that does old content (for transmog and mounts) do it at max level. So level 60 in your case since you don't have dragonflight. But most of us will be level 70 (current level cap) and soloing old content. im so incredibly happy to hear that! you're welcome! i dont think i covered much about chronological order in this video so just as some advice, Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor is from classic WoW, and if you google "classic wow zones by levels" you'll be able to see which zones you can pick from in terms of approx "right order" from level 1-60 or 70 :D and thanks so much!
As someone who left after WoTLK around the time of the Cata patch, this was very helpful. I was very confused by the fact that nothing really seemed to change with Chromie time. Knowing that only the dungeon finder changes and that I otherwise just need to go to the right zone is hugely helpful. Now to re-level all my squashed toons back to 60 in the different expansions and experience what I’ve missed :D

As a returning player I thought I'd make a new character and just go through the story of every expansion solo. If I understand things right, I should be able to turn off experience at lvl 59 to stay in Chromie time. I would also have to visit Chromie to turn off CT every time I want to do a dungeon and turn it back on afterwards. CT wasn't a thing last time I played and I think this isn't explained very well (or at all) in game. So, will this work or did I miss anything?
I just started that same project. Gonna go through every quest line and story before the next expansion rolls out. Keeping Chromie Time active is a good way to keep things interesting. It's not fun to steamroll everything at max level with no rewards to speak of.
Leveled my first character to level 60 and honestly felt more confused after. This video right here helped clear up so much, and answered so many questions. Outdated forums sort of helped but often had old information. Thank you again for the info!

Thanks for explaining this, I was pretty bummed out to find that I couldn't just play through the storyline in a linear way like with Final Fantasy XIV, and haven't played WoW since 2011, so there's a lot to catch up on.
If my nephew eventually shows interest I would suggest watching the Warcraft movie (cheesy as it is, still gives decent intro to first war) then look for Chronicles of the Second War (mod for Warcraft 3 covering Tides of Darkness and Beyond the Dark Portal eventually) alliance campaign, then on to Warcraft 3 proper and finally WoW Classic. After that, make a fresh Retail character and use current expansion level boost from main menu but don't log into them. THEN make the actual Retail character to play through Exile's Reach and head for Chromie when able (after intro to BFA if she ignores you) then head for Burning Crusade, and Bob's your uncle. Remember to freeze XP gain at level 60 to keep Chromie Time. Such a messy process just to keep continuity.
Without this video, my first experience in World of Warcraft would have been extremely unpleasant. I advise everyone, when they want to try something new, to search on RUclips, as there's always someone who can explain how to play. The video is interesting, and thank you - if you hadn't created it, I wouldn't have been able to play; I didn't even know how to control the character. All RUclipsrs who produce these types of videos, even if they only have 20 views, are immensely talented. Bravo once again.

Thanks for the info. As someone who hasn't played since Legion and is getting that itch again, was nice to learn what the heck Chromie Time was. Nice way to vary up where you level up. Laughed when I logged in and my characters were set back to level 50. Going to have to see what happened there. :) Will be checking out more of these videos.

Great video. I've been playing WoW since it's first release (I'm THAT old) but for the past few years I've not really played as much but this guide made it really clear what Chromie time was! Subbed.
Maybe I am the only one, but I really like leveling characters. I played during WoD and Legion and I liked the high level cap. I really liked the fact that you played your character through all the previous expansions. Maybe I missed that point, but is it possible to disable chromie time, so you could play through all the previous expansions like before?And I mean I dont want to stop any exp gains or something like that. I mean like classic (level 1) - shadowlands 70 ( level 60) like it was before the chromietime / scaling changes ?
I love leveling characters too! It was pretty cool when the level cap was 120. So yes, you can have chromie time "turned off" by just simply not using it at all, or just ask her to return you to the "present" timeline. What that will do is change all the zones back to their default level ranges. But, it's not quite the same like how it was on classic. Because of the level squish from 120 down to 60 (now 70, and soon 80) All the zones are scaled kind of weird, and you'll hit max level faster, you won't be able to finish all the zones before you get there unfortunately What I'd personally do I start a new character and start playing through some Eastern Kingdoms/Kalimdor zones. Then maybe once you hit level 30 or so, maybe progress onto Outland. You'll likely hit 60 there. Then I'd personally make another new character and continue onto Wrath, then into Cata.. basically just keep making new characters until you can feel like you played through them all. Not quite the same experiencing since it's spread out across different characters but yea.. there's just too much content now for what the level cap is

Hello. Great video but I still have a couple of questions. I would like to play through as much of the story as possible, is there a way to play the original story in Chromie time, did you say that's through Cataclysm, the third expansion? They're combined? Also once I hot 60, can I no longer use Chromie time? Say, I finish playing through Burning Crusade, can I then play through Wrath of the Lich King wing and work my way through all the expansions with my character?
Hey! Yes so basically, if you want to truly play through the original story as it used to be back in the day, the only way to do that is playing Classic WoW. But yea with Cataclysm, while it is the 3rd expansion, that doesn't mean all of Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor IS the cataclysm expansion. You know how in a every xpac they introduce a new continent/area to level through? Well in Cata, they added 5 new higher level zones: Mount Hyjal, Vashj'ir, Deepholm, Uldum and Twilight Highlands These 5 zones are in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. but they were the "high level" zones back in Cata. The rest of Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms, yes, it was altered in the Cata expansion because Deathwing literally came through and destroyed the world, so Blizzard had to update quests to make sense with whats going on (example, quests in towns would be like "oh no please rescue survivors, or please deal with these elementals, please put out these fires etc") but in terms of the zones themselves, i mean, Elwynn Forest is Elwynn Forest. you still have all your OG zones you know? a lot of the quests and story are similar (some even the exact same) as back in the day. so you'll still get the general vibe/story from back in the day. And overall, simply, Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor IS vanilla. in the same way Pandaria IS Mists of Pandaria, or Outland IS Burning Crusade..etc :) im sorry this is so long haha :P but basically a really good way to make sure you're questing through in the "right order" is to look at a website like this that breaks down what the level ranges of each zone in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms used to be. and just kinda follow the zones from low level to high level. wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Zones_by_level_(Classic) or if you do feel like it, playing Classic is honestly a great option. i adore classic. its slower leveling for sure, but damn its immersive
oh and one more thing about Cata/vanilla being combined is that with Cata chromie time, you'll be able to que for dungeons both from vanilla and cata :) and then, to answer your other question, yea once you hit 60 you wont be able to use chromie time (well actually, it might be til 70 now that the new xpac has come out. its usually 10 levels less than max level that it will kick you out of chromie time. and now with the war within max level is 80 but im not sure if theyve updated it yet with chromie time to be til 70) so if you were playing through BC and got to 60 (or 70 if its changed now) then it'll like kick you out back to Stormwind or Orgrimmar and stuff wont be scaled to your level anymore. so in that case i'd just start on another character and pick up where you left off or wherever you wanted to go next
So I enabled chromie time, but did not get a campaign quest for Pandaria. It just said to "get to Pandaria" and showed me the portal marker in Ogrimmar. I jumped through and there were only 2 quests in a completely different village in Jade song Forest. Does it not work if you played the campaign selected when it first came out or something?
Questions: I read somewhere that once you hit level 50 it locks out some of the dungeons. So I've stopped leveling at 49 so as to not lock myself out of content. Firstly, do you know if this is true? Secondly, when I queue for a dungeon does it only group me with people who are also using chromie time or does it group me with anyone? Thank you. Just found your channel. Good luck!
What you read about level 50 is just old information, the level cap used to be 60 in the Shadowlands expansion, so at that time Chromie Time ended at level 50 so that you could level 50-60 in shadowlands. Now with Dragonflight the level cap is 70 which means Chromie time goes to level 60 now :) Yes as far as I know it only groups you with other Chromie Time people for dungeons. Cuz how it works is, say if you're doing Mists of Pandaria, it will only let you que for MoP dungeons. Which means other people who are in say Wrath chromie time can only do wrath dungeons. That's weird, I'm a new player and didnt have to go through BfA and reach level 60. I was able to use Chromie Time from the start after picking up a quest to talk to her. Is this something that's changed since this video?
Are there any exclusive mounts, items, or achievements that you can only get by using chromie time? Will I miss anything by doing these zones and quests at Max level?
no not specifcally, i mean in general you will get some items and achievements in terms of just looting stuff and getting quest rewards but thats nothing you couldnt also do at max level anyways so theres no specific benefit like theres not a special mount or achievement for like "yayy you did Pandaria chromie time so you get this" theres nothing like that if thats what you mean :) but yea anything you can do in chromie time you can always just do later at max level hope that makes sense

I'm a Wow noob, just started. so if I finish the battle for azroth campaign and im lvl 60, can I just use my same lvl 60 character to do chromie time in the other expansions? or must I create a new character? I guess I dont understand the reasoning for it, if I take a lvl 60 character to another expansion shouldn't the game adjust its diffcultiy to my current level whether im 10 or 60.
I got a question, once I hit the max allowed level for chromie time and get "kicked out" can I go back to the area I was originally questing in and finish any quests I was working on? Like for example, if I was leveling through Legion and working on my Class Order Hall questline and I hit max level before I could finished it and I got kicked out of chromie time, could I go back and finish the questline even though chromie time is no longer active?
yes you can! it just wont really give you any experience so your leveling will kind of be halted but yea :) the quests will still be in your quest log and you can just keep going

I'm an old player returning after more than a decade. Every time I think I have it figured out, something else happens. Currently, I just hit level 35 and am now wrecking everything in my path in the Eastern Kingdoms. So does that mean that I now have to got to the Battle of Azeroth to finish leveling? What about all of my current quests?
Hey welcome back to WoW Do you have chromie time turned on? Try going to Chromie and switch it to the Cataclysm timeline because that's the one that includes Eastern Kingdoms and Kalmidor That will scale the quests to you and you can keep going You don't have to go to BFA I hope that helps, let me know if you have any issues still
no you can 100% quest in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms! (its the Cataclysm chromie time option and thats how you can que for Classic dungeons like Deadmines, Shadowfang Keep, Dire Maul..etc) You'll notice if you dont turn chromie time on (aka if you're in the "present timeline") if you go to your map and mouse over zones in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms, they naturally have certain level ranges. for example Westfall is level 5-30, Hillsbrad is 7-30, Tanaris is level 15-30, Mount Hyjal is level 30-35. (just a few random examples) but if you turn Chromie time ON, it actually makes it to where Westfall is now scaled level 5-61, Hillsbrad 7-61, Tanaris 15-61, Mount Hyjal 30-61. So basically you can now quest in ANY Kalimdor/Eastern Kingdoms zone at anytime. you could literally be level 50 and start questing in Elwynn Forest and the mobs will be your level :)
They changed the max level to 61 in 10.1.5. You get the quest scroll to exit Chromie time at 60, but you don't get the countdown mandatory teleport until 61. Quests stop giving relevant experience at 60. But treasure chests and ore/herbs still give normal exp. I've been leveling in old Vanilla zones from 30-61 a lot recently just killing rares and opening chests. Goes fairly fast and you come out of it with 100,000-250,000 gold worth of transmog items.
ah okay interesting! yea i think they changed a couple of things since i filmed this video. Chromie Time seems to be a better experience now overall, not so restrictive to new players from what i've read, and i dont think it forces you into BFA anymore i believe? Thanks for the info!
Hi so if you are doing an expansion you said you get ripped out at level 60. Does that mean you don’t get to finish the story of it? Like Is there a way to hat pay wow for its story?
yes that is correct, it will just rip you out. you could technically go back and keep doing the story where you left off, but you will no longer be getting any experience (or a very small amount because it wont be scaled) so it might kind of feel like a waste of time you pretty much would want to just continue playing through on a new character, you might have to repeat some quests you already did though of course.
Excellent video, however on my main I have never been to shadowlands. So I figure I will roll a monk and go there with Chromie Time. That worked great, and I think that I got there at level 13. The thing is that I leveled in the Panda starting zone, so I had a whopping item level of 7. I am level 23 now, my item level is still 7. I am getting the feeling that you get absolutely no gear doing it this way. I don't want to do BFA because I had a couple of toons go that route. Shadowlands will be fresh for me, but if I am not going to get any gear it doesn't make any sense. Also like in BFA the food doesn't scale, it starts at level 50 I think, nothing seems to be at level. Kind of sucks, why even offer it at that level, I don't get it?😊
So I started playing wow for the first time. And expansion it started menwas dragonflight. Once I get to level 60 and unlock chromie time. Can I take my level 60 character into these old expansions or do I have to start with a low level character? Also do you have to start in dragon flight as a new player now? It seemed I didn't have a choice haha
So basically it will *want* you to go through dragonflight, kinda like how it used to force you to go through BFA. But you can actually just go talk to chromie right away now and choose anything you want. Even from lvl 10. Like technically you didn't even HAVE to do dragonflight to level 60. They made it so you can just pick now anything you want at level 10 so yea you definitely don't gotta do it again. Chromie time goes up to level 70 now that the new xpac is out and level cap is 80 So you can level your current char from 60-70 wherever you want with chromie time, but your almost there so you'll probably only play through one zone before your 70. You'll wanna start a low level character if you want to play through other chromie timelines :)
On my last fresh alt, I got the auto summon to Stormwind at 60 while in Cata Cromie time, and went on to DF. I'm now leveling a NE druid in BFA. Will i be able to go back to Kul Tiras to finish the story? Last time i did BFA was as horde during that expansion, and i kind of wanted to see it from the other side.
yea what Lahiss said too, you can definitely go back and finish it, you just wont gain experience past level 60/it wont be scaled with Chromie Time. you can always start a new character and do chromie time in BFA and i think you should be able to finish the whole story before you out level it.
@YassineAhdaiba it's because chromie time stops at level 70 With the new expansion, you gotta level 70-80 in khaz algar the new war within zones Chromie time is just from levels 10-70 (Its always 10 levels less than max level, so in a few years when we're able to get to level 90, chromie will go to 80)
you can switch around as many times as you like. for example you could do level 10-13 in burning crusade, then decide you wanna go to pandaria from 13-22, then legion 22-40...etc literally as many switches as you want. but if you mean in terms of fully completing each expansion in its entirety, yea you'd probably need a separate character for each one cuz you'd get too high level to keep questing :)
you should be able to. i mean, they didnt really start doing cutscenes in expansions until more recently ish (like vanilla, burning crusade and wrath dont have any - well wrath might have a little bit but not really) but its mostly few and far between. not until around Warlords/Legion did they start really adding a ton. but yes they will just pop up for you where they should during questing
it wasnt a few months ago when i made this, new players who hadn't played through BFA/didnt have a max toon yet would be forced to play through BFA. but it looks like they just updated chromie time within the last few weeks or so and now its not like that and yep as far as i know u can just pick whatever after starter island
As a new player this is extremely helpful. I have spent the past few weeks learning about the game, Asmongold LOL, and trying to figure out how expansions work and this is absolutely the best video I've seen on it. Reddit was def helpful but never truly pointing me in the direction of how exactly to do it. I really want to play through every expansion so may just no life and make a new character for each expansion. Do you know if its true that you can still stop earning xp? So hypothetically I can stop if needed to play the story out if I have to. Hahah. Hopefully! Either way, thanks for guiding us lol
im really happy to hear my video was helpful to you! thanks! playing through every expansion on a new character is a great way to do it! i believe you can turn off your experience yes, i think theres an NPC for it (just googled it- "To turn your character's experience gain on and off, visit the Experience Eliminator at your faction's capital city: On modern World of Warcraft Realms: If you are Alliance, speak to Behsten in Stormwind. If you are Horde, speak to Slahtz in Orgrimmar.") either you can turn it off, or you can just start another new character haha like maybe if you get through half of eastern kingdoms on one character, make another one and do the other half. totally up to you! good luck!!

More so the amount of times I die and learn oh shit prob should have grinded a bit more. At one point I realized my warrior had such a lack of abilities annnnd found it's because I didn't talk to a certain person. Also appreciate the tips! Hi! I'm in chromie time at pandaria,i reach lv59 but i did not finish the mainquest so i'd like to stop the exp using the npc at stormwind but it didn't spawn... if chromie kick me off at lv60 how can i finish the mainquest of pandaria?
hey! so actually chromie time goes up to level 70 now because the new xpac came out a few weeks ago, so the new max level is 80 (and chromie time will let you go to 10 levels before max level) so ur good for now anyways :) but regardless, u dont gotta turn off exp. once u get to level 70 and it "kicks you out"/teleports you back to SW/Org, you can just go back to pandaria and keep going. its essentially only kicking you out of chromie time scaling, but nothings stopping you from going wherever u wanna go afterwards :) u just wont level up anymore and will probably one shot all mobs

Having started with it, Battle for Azeroth had a great starting zone, but story-wise you're very much being tossed into a story in progress with no context as to why anyone iconic is important (Returning player; played briefly back in BC)
So basically it will kick you out and teleport you to Orgrimmar or Stormwind. At that point it will try to get you to go to the current expansion Dragonflight, but technically if you really want to you can just go back to wherever you were questing and still do those quests, but you won't really get any experience for it because chromie time is no longer activated. Most people will just level a new character and try to pick up roughly where they left off But there's really nothing stopping you. You could be level 70 max level and go do old quests for no experience :)
I think they ended up changing Chromie Time pretty recently, I filmed this video about a month or so ago (reuploaded here, it was on my main other channel Ladysurvival) so yea im not really sure why/how you were able to do that!! I think from what I heard, they made chromie time more accessible right away to new players. Like in this video I was saying how they'll force you to do BFA, and i dont think thats the case anymore. so maybe it works the same for trial accounts now, once u reach level 10 ur just allowed to use chromie time i guess
@@LadySurvivalWoW well whatever happened, the change, I like the fact I can now fully experience the "Classic" content, including dungeons... ...though, I am sorta locked out of some dungeons (Upper Blackrock spire and Zul'Gurub), and the dungeon finder doesn't exactly show all the dungeons (missing Sunken Temple)

I watched one vid on the classes and then got recommended this vid. Dont know who this is and sadly it wont pertain to me (i forgot wow is sub based and im not a fan of that in 2023 lol) but theres one large take away i got from this vid. @marcosmoraes8654 I feel this SO much 💔 I'm the exact same way and I really wish they made WoW more new player friendly and guided them through the 20 years of content in the correct order instead of just plopping you into the game and being like "pick whatever you want!!" Or even worse, by default they try to force you into going to BFA, or I think now it's dragonflight since the new xpac is out. It makes no sense, I don't understand why blizzard does this 😭 I hope you figured out a good order to play through tho! Basically just follow the expansions so start with Eastern Kingdoms/Kalimdor. I really recommend doing your races starting zones in order if it's your first time through :) The Exiles Reach starting zone is stupid but they'll make you do it once before you have the option to pick the actual racial starting zones. @@LadySurvivalWoW Well, I googled it and found out the three first expansions are Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich king and Cataclysm. So I think I will use this Chromie NPC and start from there. But it would be good to have a way to play from the actual base game. From the immediate events after Warcraft 3 🤔
@marcosmoraes8654 yes those are the first 3 expansions, Burning Crusade takes place in Outland, but back in the day that was to get from level 60-70 The original/vanilla game before Burning Crusade was in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor and you'd go from 1-60 there. The only thing is that in the Cataclysm expansion, they changed a lot of the zones in eastern kingdoms/kalimdor cuz deathwing came through and destroyed a lot of stuff. So a lot of the quests are different from what they used to be. But still the best place to start for that original 1-60 story The Cataclsym chromie time is the one based in those continents so I'd start there then afterwards do Burning Crusade, then wrath Then Cataclysm itself comes after wrath and theres specific zones in eastern kingdoms/kalimdor that actually tell the Cataclysm story (Mount Hyjal, Vashj'ir, Deepholm, Uldum and Twilight Highlands) I know that's probably a lot of info haha but I hope it makes sense. There's a TON of zones in eastern kingdoms/kalimdor. It might be hard to know where to start, what I'd personally do is go to this site to see the "original" zone levels from back in the day to get an idea of what zones are meant to be low level and which ones are mid/high level. @@LadySurvivalWoW Thanks, that helps. Still, it's a bit confusing. The Cataclysm is the third expansion, so the game throws us three expansions ahead, with the map being altered to adequate that expansion. So, if I start the Chromie quest and go back in time, the base/vanilla map changes too?
@marcosmoraes8654 well the base/vanilla game doesn't exist anymore in retail. Basically once cataclsym came out, a lot of stuff changed. The zones and quests are pretty similar to what they used to be, some even the exact same. So it's the closest you'll get, unless you want to actually play Classic WoW to fully experience it as it used to be you can do that. You can play classic as long as you have a subscription. But yea, i know it sounds confusing but Cataclysm chromie time just means Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. They essentially blended vanilla WoW with cata. But the only actual Cataclysm part is those few Cataclysm specific zones I mentioned

I know this is a few months old and not sure if this has been updated in another video. But this isn't the case anymore. I'm on my first ever play through and at level 20 my buddy same level as me with experience in the game went straight to chromie and we swapped to a different story

As a new player, they recently changed it so you DONT need to have a level 60 character to do Chromie time. Now you just need to be level 10
Also as far as I know, they no longer force you to do Battle for Azeroth. Should just be able to pick whatever expansion timeline you want.
P.S I'm thinking of doing an updated chromie time video. If anyone has any specific things they want me to address/answer in it, let me know. I'll make it in a few weeks and try to do some more research on issues people are having with understanding it and what not

I haven't watched yet. but anyway. I haven't played since 2014, I've just started playing 4 days ago, got my level 60 (i haven't got dragon flight) And i have never been so confused and baffled by a game before, I couldn't understand why I could only do BFA dungeons, I couldn't understand why item levels were lower in heroic and mythic dungeons along with worse stats, i couldn't understand why heroic dungeons weren't in my dungeon finder as i have quests to do in heroic dungeons. almost all the info i have read online is outdated which i didnt know, I turned to reddit and got multiple different answers which only lead me to ask more questions..I've been told chromie time kicks you out at level 61, I've read it kicks you out at level 50, I'm level 60 i can use chromie time but i dont get the pop up screen i had at level 30+ (when i first discovered chromie time) i have to talk to her and ask where i should choose and i can select from there, after i select a time i can still only do bfa dungeons, is this because im level 60 and not 50 or what? do i need to cap my level at 50? how do people farm for transmogs in older content? do they have to have a character locked at level 50 to be able to do old dungeons?

Chromie Time kicks you out at level 60. You'll be having a good time questing at 59, then boom you hit 60 and it will teleport you out and back into org/sw.
I personally tested leveling from 59 to 60 in my video and showed how it does this :)
To farm older content for transmog, there's 2 ways to do it. Before level 60, I'd recommend talking to chromie and have her set you to present time. Which essentially means chromie time is off, which means dungeons don't scale to your level. You'll still need be a high ish level (like obviously you're not gonna solo dungeons at level 15) so you'll wanna be I would say at least 40-59 range.
But that's just one option, and not the best option. The vast majority of the player base that does old content (for transmog and mounts) do it at max level. So level 60 in your case since you don't have dragonflight. But most of us will be level 70 (current level cap) and soloing old content.

i dont think i covered much about chronological order in this video so just as some advice, Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor is from classic WoW, and if you google "classic wow zones by levels" you'll be able to see which zones you can pick from in terms of approx "right order" from level 1-60 or 70 :D

As someone who left after WoTLK around the time of the Cata patch, this was very helpful. I was very confused by the fact that nothing really seemed to change with Chromie time. Knowing that only the dungeon finder changes and that I otherwise just need to go to the right zone is hugely helpful. Now to re-level all my squashed toons back to 60 in the different expansions and experience what I’ve missed :D

As a returning player I thought I'd make a new character and just go through the story of every expansion solo. If I understand things right, I should be able to turn off experience at lvl 59 to stay in Chromie time. I would also have to visit Chromie to turn off CT every time I want to do a dungeon and turn it back on afterwards. CT wasn't a thing last time I played and I think this isn't explained very well (or at all) in game.
So, will this work or did I miss anything?
I just started that same project. Gonna go through every quest line and story before the next expansion rolls out. Keeping Chromie Time active is a good way to keep things interesting. It's not fun to steamroll everything at max level with no rewards to speak of.
Leveled my first character to level 60 and honestly felt more confused after. This video right here helped clear up so much, and answered so many questions. Outdated forums sort of helped but often had old information. Thank you again for the info!

Thanks for explaining this, I was pretty bummed out to find that I couldn't just play through the storyline in a linear way like with Final Fantasy XIV, and haven't played WoW since 2011, so there's a lot to catch up on.

yea i wish they made it simple like that, it would make so much more sense for sure.
If my nephew eventually shows interest I would suggest watching the Warcraft movie (cheesy as it is, still gives decent intro to first war) then look for Chronicles of the Second War (mod for Warcraft 3 covering Tides of Darkness and Beyond the Dark Portal eventually) alliance campaign, then on to Warcraft 3 proper and finally WoW Classic. After that, make a fresh Retail character and use current expansion level boost from main menu but don't log into them. THEN make the actual Retail character to play through Exile's Reach and head for Chromie when able (after intro to BFA if she ignores you) then head for Burning Crusade, and Bob's your uncle. Remember to freeze XP gain at level 60 to keep Chromie Time. Such a messy process just to keep continuity.

Maybe I am the only one, but I really like leveling characters. I played during WoD and Legion and I liked the high level cap. I really liked the fact that you played your character through all the previous expansions. Maybe I missed that point, but is it possible to disable chromie time, so you could play through all the previous expansions like before?And I mean I dont want to stop any exp gains or something like that. I mean like classic (level 1) - shadowlands 70 ( level 60) like it was before the chromietime / scaling changes ?
I love leveling characters too! It was pretty cool when the level cap was 120.
So yes, you can have chromie time "turned off" by just simply not using it at all, or just ask her to return you to the "present" timeline.
What that will do is change all the zones back to their default level ranges. But, it's not quite the same like how it was on classic.
Because of the level squish from 120 down to 60 (now 70, and soon 80)
All the zones are scaled kind of weird, and you'll hit max level faster, you won't be able to finish all the zones before you get there unfortunately
What I'd personally do I start a new character and start playing through some Eastern Kingdoms/Kalimdor zones. Then maybe once you hit level 30 or so, maybe progress onto Outland. You'll likely hit 60 there.
Then I'd personally make another new character and continue onto Wrath, then into Cata.. basically just keep making new characters until you can feel like you played through them all.
Not quite the same experiencing since it's spread out across different characters but yea.. there's just too much content now for what the level cap is

I would like to play through as much of the story as possible, is there a way to play the original story in Chromie time, did you say that's through Cataclysm, the third expansion? They're combined?
Also once I hot 60, can I no longer use Chromie time? Say, I finish playing through Burning Crusade, can I then play through Wrath of the Lich King wing and work my way through all the expansions with my character?

Yes so basically, if you want to truly play through the original story as it used to be back in the day, the only way to do that is playing Classic WoW.
But yea with Cataclysm, while it is the 3rd expansion, that doesn't mean all of Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor IS the cataclysm expansion.
You know how in a every xpac they introduce a new continent/area to level through? Well in Cata, they added 5 new higher level zones: Mount Hyjal, Vashj'ir, Deepholm, Uldum and Twilight Highlands
These 5 zones are in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. but they were the "high level" zones back in Cata.
The rest of Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms, yes, it was altered in the Cata expansion because Deathwing literally came through and destroyed the world, so Blizzard had to update quests to make sense with whats going on (example, quests in towns would be like "oh no please rescue survivors, or please deal with these elementals, please put out these fires etc")
but in terms of the zones themselves, i mean, Elwynn Forest is Elwynn Forest. you still have all your OG zones you know? a lot of the quests and story are similar (some even the exact same) as back in the day. so you'll still get the general vibe/story from back in the day.
And overall, simply, Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor IS vanilla. in the same way Pandaria IS Mists of Pandaria, or Outland IS Burning Crusade..etc :)
im sorry this is so long haha :P but basically a really good way to make sure you're questing through in the "right order" is to look at a website like this that breaks down what the level ranges of each zone in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms used to be. and just kinda follow the zones from low level to high level. wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Zones_by_level_(Classic)
or if you do feel like it, playing Classic is honestly a great option. i adore classic. its slower leveling for sure, but damn its immersive
oh and one more thing about Cata/vanilla being combined is that with Cata chromie time, you'll be able to que for dungeons both from vanilla and cata :)
and then, to answer your other question, yea once you hit 60 you wont be able to use chromie time (well actually, it might be til 70 now that the new xpac has come out. its usually 10 levels less than max level that it will kick you out of chromie time. and now with the war within max level is 80 but im not sure if theyve updated it yet with chromie time to be til 70)
so if you were playing through BC and got to 60 (or 70 if its changed now) then it'll like kick you out back to Stormwind or Orgrimmar and stuff wont be scaled to your level anymore.
so in that case i'd just start on another character and pick up where you left off or wherever you wanted to go next

So I enabled chromie time, but did not get a campaign quest for Pandaria. It just said to "get to Pandaria" and showed me the portal marker in Ogrimmar.
I jumped through and there were only 2 quests in a completely different village in Jade song Forest.
Does it not work if you played the campaign selected when it first came out or something?
Questions: I read somewhere that once you hit level 50 it locks out some of the dungeons. So I've stopped leveling at 49 so as to not lock myself out of content. Firstly, do you know if this is true? Secondly, when I queue for a dungeon does it only group me with people who are also using chromie time or does it group me with anyone? Thank you. Just found your channel. Good luck!
What you read about level 50 is just old information, the level cap used to be 60 in the Shadowlands expansion, so at that time Chromie Time ended at level 50 so that you could level 50-60 in shadowlands. Now with Dragonflight the level cap is 70 which means Chromie time goes to level 60 now :)
Yes as far as I know it only groups you with other Chromie Time people for dungeons. Cuz how it works is, say if you're doing Mists of Pandaria, it will only let you que for MoP dungeons. Which means other people who are in say Wrath chromie time can only do wrath dungeons.

That's weird, I'm a new player and didnt have to go through BfA and reach level 60. I was able to use Chromie Time from the start after picking up a quest to talk to her. Is this something that's changed since this video?

Are there any exclusive mounts, items, or achievements that you can only get by using chromie time? Will I miss anything by doing these zones and quests at Max level?
no not specifcally, i mean in general you will get some items and achievements in terms of just looting stuff and getting quest rewards but thats nothing you couldnt also do at max level anyways so theres no specific benefit like theres not a special mount or achievement for like "yayy you did Pandaria chromie time so you get this" theres nothing like that if thats what you mean :)
but yea anything you can do in chromie time you can always just do later at max level hope that makes sense

I'm a Wow noob, just started. so if I finish the battle for azroth campaign and im lvl 60, can I just use my same lvl 60 character to do chromie time in the other expansions? or must I create a new character? I guess I dont understand the reasoning for it, if I take a lvl 60 character to another expansion shouldn't the game adjust its diffcultiy to my current level whether im 10 or 60.
I got a question, once I hit the max allowed level for chromie time and get "kicked out" can I go back to the area I was originally questing in and finish any quests I was working on? Like for example, if I was leveling through Legion and working on my Class Order Hall questline and I hit max level before I could finished it and I got kicked out of chromie time, could I go back and finish the questline even though chromie time is no longer active?
yes you can! it just wont really give you any experience so your leveling will kind of be halted but yea :) the quests will still be in your quest log and you can just keep going

I'm an old player returning after more than a decade. Every time I think I have it figured out, something else happens. Currently, I just hit level 35 and am now wrecking everything in my path in the Eastern Kingdoms. So does that mean that I now have to got to the Battle of Azeroth to finish leveling? What about all of my current quests?

Do you have chromie time turned on? Try going to Chromie and switch it to the Cataclysm timeline because that's the one that includes Eastern Kingdoms and Kalmidor
That will scale the quests to you and you can keep going
You don't have to go to BFA

I'm so confused, so if you're leveling in retail now you just do... nothing in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor?
no you can 100% quest in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms! (its the Cataclysm chromie time option and thats how you can que for Classic dungeons like Deadmines, Shadowfang Keep, Dire Maul..etc)
You'll notice if you dont turn chromie time on (aka if you're in the "present timeline") if you go to your map and mouse over zones in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms, they naturally have certain level ranges. for example Westfall is level 5-30, Hillsbrad is 7-30, Tanaris is level 15-30, Mount Hyjal is level 30-35. (just a few random examples)
but if you turn Chromie time ON, it actually makes it to where Westfall is now scaled level 5-61, Hillsbrad 7-61, Tanaris 15-61, Mount Hyjal 30-61.
So basically you can now quest in ANY Kalimdor/Eastern Kingdoms zone at anytime. you could literally be level 50 and start questing in Elwynn Forest and the mobs will be your level :)
They changed the max level to 61 in 10.1.5. You get the quest scroll to exit Chromie time at 60, but you don't get the countdown mandatory teleport until 61. Quests stop giving relevant experience at 60. But treasure chests and ore/herbs still give normal exp. I've been leveling in old Vanilla zones from 30-61 a lot recently just killing rares and opening chests. Goes fairly fast and you come out of it with 100,000-250,000 gold worth of transmog items.
ah okay interesting! yea i think they changed a couple of things since i filmed this video. Chromie Time seems to be a better experience now overall, not so restrictive to new players from what i've read, and i dont think it forces you into BFA anymore i believe?

Hi so if you are doing an expansion you said you get ripped out at level 60. Does that mean you don’t get to finish the story of it? Like Is there a way to hat pay wow for its story?
yes that is correct, it will just rip you out. you could technically go back and keep doing the story where you left off, but you will no longer be getting any experience (or a very small amount because it wont be scaled) so it might kind of feel like a waste of time
you pretty much would want to just continue playing through on a new character, you might have to repeat some quests you already did though of course.
Excellent video, however on my main I have never been to shadowlands. So I figure I will roll a monk and go there with Chromie Time. That worked great, and I think that I got there at level 13. The thing is that I leveled in the Panda starting zone, so I had a whopping item level of 7. I am level 23 now, my item level is still 7. I am getting the feeling that you get absolutely no gear doing it this way. I don't want to do BFA because I had a couple of toons go that route. Shadowlands will be fresh for me, but if I am not going to get any gear it doesn't make any sense. Also like in BFA the food doesn't scale, it starts at level 50 I think, nothing seems to be at level. Kind of sucks, why even offer it at that level, I don't get it?😊
Don't if you choose a hero class like Death Knight, you get a unique starting zone instead of exiles reach?
I believe you get either the original starting zone with Arthas, or the new one with Bolvar (orange lich king)
So I started playing wow for the first time. And expansion it started menwas dragonflight. Once I get to level 60 and unlock chromie time. Can I take my level 60 character into these old expansions or do I have to start with a low level character? Also do you have to start in dragon flight as a new player now? It seemed I didn't have a choice haha
So basically it will *want* you to go through dragonflight, kinda like how it used to force you to go through BFA.
But you can actually just go talk to chromie right away now and choose anything you want. Even from lvl 10.
Like technically you didn't even HAVE to do dragonflight to level 60.
They made it so you can just pick now anything you want at level 10 so yea you definitely don't gotta do it again.
Chromie time goes up to level 70 now that the new xpac is out and level cap is 80
So you can level your current char from 60-70 wherever you want with chromie time, but your almost there so you'll probably only play through one zone before your 70.
You'll wanna start a low level character if you want to play through other chromie timelines :)
On my last fresh alt, I got the auto summon to Stormwind at 60 while in Cata Cromie time, and went on to DF. I'm now leveling a NE druid in BFA. Will i be able to go back to Kul Tiras to finish the story? Last time i did BFA was as horde during that expansion, and i kind of wanted to see it from the other side.
you can always do any quests at max level
yea what Lahiss said too, you can definitely go back and finish it, you just wont gain experience past level 60/it wont be scaled with Chromie Time.
you can always start a new character and do chromie time in BFA and i think you should be able to finish the whole story before you out level it.

With the new expansion, you gotta level 70-80 in khaz algar the new war within zones
Chromie time is just from levels 10-70
(Its always 10 levels less than max level, so in a few years when we're able to get to level 90, chromie will go to 80)
So if I wanted to experience all of them I have to create a new character everytime?
you can switch around as many times as you like. for example you could do level 10-13 in burning crusade, then decide you wanna go to pandaria from 13-22, then legion 22-40...etc literally as many switches as you want.
but if you mean in terms of fully completing each expansion in its entirety, yea you'd probably need a separate character for each one cuz you'd get too high level to keep questing :)

you should be able to. i mean, they didnt really start doing cutscenes in expansions until more recently ish (like vanilla, burning crusade and wrath dont have any - well wrath might have a little bit but not really) but its mostly few and far between. not until around Warlords/Legion did they start really adding a ton. but yes they will just pop up for you where they should during questing
I thought Chromie Time can be reached right after the starter island if you go to your faction's capital city, is that not the case?
it wasnt a few months ago when i made this, new players who hadn't played through BFA/didnt have a max toon yet would be forced to play through BFA. but it looks like they just updated chromie time within the last few weeks or so and now its not like that and yep as far as i know u can just pick whatever after starter island

As a new player this is extremely helpful. I have spent the past few weeks learning about the game, Asmongold LOL, and trying to figure out how expansions work and this is absolutely the best video I've seen on it. Reddit was def helpful but never truly pointing me in the direction of how exactly to do it. I really want to play through every expansion so may just no life and make a new character for each expansion. Do you know if its true that you can still stop earning xp? So hypothetically I can stop if needed to play the story out if I have to. Hahah. Hopefully! Either way, thanks for guiding us lol

playing through every expansion on a new character is a great way to do it!
i believe you can turn off your experience yes, i think theres an NPC for it (just googled it- "To turn your character's experience gain on and off, visit the Experience Eliminator at your faction's capital city: On modern World of Warcraft Realms: If you are Alliance, speak to Behsten in Stormwind. If you are Horde, speak to Slahtz in Orgrimmar.")
either you can turn it off, or you can just start another new character haha
like maybe if you get through half of eastern kingdoms on one character, make another one and do the other half. totally up to you! good luck!!

More so the amount of times I die and learn oh shit prob should have grinded a bit more. At one point I realized my warrior had such a lack of abilities annnnd found it's because I didn't talk to a certain person. Also appreciate the tips! I still plan on doing what I said above but def trying to play the shit out of SoD currently haha

Hi! I'm in chromie time at pandaria,i reach lv59 but i did not finish the mainquest so i'd like to stop the exp using the npc at stormwind but it didn't spawn...

hey! so actually chromie time goes up to level 70 now because the new xpac came out a few weeks ago, so the new max level is 80 (and chromie time will let you go to 10 levels before max level)
so ur good for now anyways :)
but regardless, u dont gotta turn off exp. once u get to level 70 and it "kicks you out"/teleports you back to SW/Org, you can just go back to pandaria and keep going.
its essentially only kicking you out of chromie time scaling, but nothings stopping you from going wherever u wanna go afterwards :) u just wont level up anymore and will probably one shot all mobs

Having started with it, Battle for Azeroth had a great starting zone, but story-wise you're very much being tossed into a story in progress with no context as to why anyone iconic is important

what if i want to complete the expansion but have reached lvl 60 ?
So basically it will kick you out and teleport you to Orgrimmar or Stormwind. At that point it will try to get you to go to the current expansion Dragonflight, but technically if you really want to you can just go back to wherever you were questing and still do those quests, but you won't really get any experience for it because chromie time is no longer activated. Most people will just level a new character and try to pick up roughly where they left off
But there's really nothing stopping you. You could be level 70 max level and go do old quests for no experience :)

and now I'm confused on how the hells I somehow activated chromie time on my Trial account.
I think they ended up changing Chromie Time pretty recently, I filmed this video about a month or so ago (reuploaded here, it was on my main other channel Ladysurvival)

I think from what I heard, they made chromie time more accessible right away to new players. Like in this video I was saying how they'll force you to do BFA, and i dont think thats the case anymore. so maybe it works the same for trial accounts now, once u reach level 10 ur just allowed to use chromie time i guess
@@LadySurvivalWoW well whatever happened, the change, I like the fact I can now fully experience the "Classic" content, including dungeons... ...though, I am sorta locked out of some dungeons (Upper Blackrock spire and Zul'Gurub), and the dungeon finder doesn't exactly show all the dungeons (missing Sunken Temple)

I'm a new player and I had to do a bunch of research just to know where I should begin to understand the story. I play games for the story and lore, and I want to play from the beginning...
@marcosmoraes8654 I feel this SO much 💔 I'm the exact same way and I really wish they made WoW more new player friendly and guided them through the 20 years of content in the correct order instead of just plopping you into the game and being like "pick whatever you want!!" Or even worse, by default they try to force you into going to BFA, or I think now it's dragonflight since the new xpac is out.

I hope you figured out a good order to play through tho! Basically just follow the expansions so start with Eastern Kingdoms/Kalimdor. I really recommend doing your races starting zones in order if it's your first time through :)
The Exiles Reach starting zone is stupid but they'll make you do it once before you have the option to pick the actual racial starting zones.

But it would be good to have a way to play from the actual base game. From the immediate events after Warcraft 3 🤔
@marcosmoraes8654 yes those are the first 3 expansions, Burning Crusade takes place in Outland, but back in the day that was to get from level 60-70
The original/vanilla game before Burning Crusade was in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor and you'd go from 1-60 there.
The only thing is that in the Cataclysm expansion, they changed a lot of the zones in eastern kingdoms/kalimdor cuz deathwing came through and destroyed a lot of stuff. So a lot of the quests are different from what they used to be. But still the best place to start for that original 1-60 story
The Cataclsym chromie time is the one based in those continents so I'd start there then afterwards do Burning Crusade, then wrath
Then Cataclysm itself comes after wrath and theres specific zones in eastern kingdoms/kalimdor that actually tell the Cataclysm story (Mount Hyjal, Vashj'ir, Deepholm, Uldum and Twilight Highlands)
I know that's probably a lot of info haha but I hope it makes sense.
There's a TON of zones in eastern kingdoms/kalimdor. It might be hard to know where to start, what I'd personally do is go to this site to see the "original" zone levels from back in the day to get an idea of what zones are meant to be low level and which ones are mid/high level. And you can kinda form your route by that.

Thanks, that helps. Still, it's a bit confusing. The Cataclysm is the third expansion, so the game throws us three expansions ahead, with the map being altered to adequate that expansion. So, if I start the Chromie quest and go back in time, the base/vanilla map changes too?
@marcosmoraes8654 well the base/vanilla game doesn't exist anymore in retail. Basically once cataclsym came out, a lot of stuff changed. The zones and quests are pretty similar to what they used to be, some even the exact same. So it's the closest you'll get, unless you want to actually play Classic WoW to fully experience it as it used to be you can do that. You can play classic as long as you have a subscription.
But yea, i know it sounds confusing but Cataclysm chromie time just means Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. They essentially blended vanilla WoW with cata.
But the only actual Cataclysm part is those few Cataclysm specific zones I mentioned

I know this is a few months old and not sure if this has been updated in another video. But this isn't the case anymore. I'm on my first ever play through and at level 20 my buddy same level as me with experience in the game went straight to chromie and we swapped to a different story
