That USB tip was the best thing ive seen all year. I was completely unaware to that. I kept wondering my my camera kept cutting out mid streams. thanks a bunch!
Oculus's cable is UDB-c on both ends because a USB-c port on a computer can output about three times the amperage, allowing your quest to stay charged while using or at least lose charge VERY slowly. If your computer doesn't have a usb-c port, you can use am adapter and get slower charging. This is better than making the cable USB-A (regular USB) and giving EVERYONE slower charging.
Pixels per display pixel override is super sampling, which is totally different than what your graphics slider does in the main Oculus app. The graphics slider allows you to use a lower resolution than your LCD panels use. All the way to the right is using the full resolution, and to the left is lower than that. Even 3090's have trouble with full resolution, I find it best to let the app set this, or only bump it up a couple notches, for best performance. Then set the pixels per display pixel override to 1.2 or 1.3 at the most, to sharpen up your image. The Encode Resolution Width is the same thing as your graphics slider in the main app, and doesn't do anything now that we have the graphics slider. Leave this at 0. You got the other two settings right.
The graphic slider sets the RENDER resolution, in the ODT you can set the ENCODE resolution. As far as I know they are two completely different things.
Back when I was a pot dealer, in the 1970's, I learned the first rule of marketing. The 1st hit, is always free. Zuck is quite likely losing money on the Quest 2 model. He is quite literally gaining the entire planets business. Like him or hate him, a brilliant business model.

Changing that USB power setting does nothing other than stop the USB being allowed to sleep when NOT in use, it also needs to be done in device manager too but you didn't mention that part. No mention of USB plug type.. USB TYPE A cannot deliver the power required to keep the headset going so battery will deplete fairly quickly, Like 21/2 hours even when on cable if running 90+ Refresh rate. The USB cable MUST be TYPE C on both ends and NOT by using an adaptor to gain access to the higher power allowed only by Type C connectors.
i eventually bought the oculus link cable. i owned the party link first and one other off brand cable and they both only transfered half the amount of data the official link cable could. I tested the connections many times while flipping the ends of the cables around. It is expensive but its also longer and quite a bit faster than 3rd party in my personal experience.
8 months ago you posted this video and here I am 8 months later thanking you. Just bought 2 quest 2s so my boy and I can play together (don't worry he ain't a squeaker)
Really happy with the kiwi cable you advised. Feel such an idiot I'd not done these settings before. Made such a difference. Was getting same quality as air link, but now is miles better. Great job mate.
Might want to warn folks some of these tips are outdated. A lot of issues with Airlink are due to people tweaking their settings in the diagnostic tool. Furthermore many of the tweaks previously needed in the diag tool are now properly managed in settings. Specifically the bitrate setting should no longer be manually manipulated as that has been shown to cause issues with Airlink. Set it to zero. Similarly use settings to tweak resolution.
Was wondering why my AirLink was fucked up after my headset died after a link cable session and wanted to charge while playing, then after an hour of trying to fix it, this video popped in my head and i just had a feeling the settings was the problem. THANK YOU.
if you get "oculus tray tool" it automatically manages all the usb power settings, as well as offering some other useful utility for putting a lasso around zuckyboi when he's on my pc.
My biggest concern with my cables are that when they're plugged in to the actual power supply of my house, the device doesn't seem to actually be staying at a stable battery level or charging. I was hoping that as long as it was plugged in, I be able to actually use it without it shutting down in an hour or two. Kind of disappointed...
If you happen to have an nvidia card with the virtual link port (20 series), try giving that a shot. In my case it was able to put out enough current to at least maintain the battery level
The way to make sure you get steady regulated power to your equipment is to use a back up power supply. It takes the wall current and voltage, and makes sure your system has a steady buffered (safe) power stream. It also makes sure that in the event of a power outage or glitch, you equipment is not damaged.
Love the channel man, you’ve been posting such great info for newbies into oculus. Question, do you have any recommendations for third party head straps that come with a batter backup?
Do you recommend using the link cable over something like virtual desktop? Also have you used any mods to improve FOV on the quest? I have a reverb G2 right now... The picture is really good, but i find it a bit wobbly and hard to get into focus.. plus the FOV doesn't seem that terrific.

Thanks for sharing your VR experiences--I tried the original HTC Vive and really enjoyed gaming, then bought the Quest 3 and it lags and stutters even plugged in with a 2.2gbps USB A to USB C cable. I'm frustrated that the latest VR headset has me scratching my head on how to resolve the issues when the first gen Vice just works right out of the box. I'm tempered to return my Quest 3 and buy an Index. I'm running a 3070ti with 64GB of RAM on an 11th Gen i7 and can play any AAA title on ultra settings with zero visual issues. Plug in the VR headset and every 20 seconds it lags out jumps and makes the experience awful. Love your content--straight to the point, no dragging out to get higher run times and your straight up "I prefer this" instead of being a fan-boy of the product you're reviewing.
Usb c to usb c is better for example playing in vrchat for hours because it charges the headset while playing (usb c to usb a not) 😉 wich for some people is a good point Also if you sell your quest 1 then Switch cables
Alright I know I’m a LITTLE late to the video but man I had no clue I could change the refresh rate in the oculus app. That solved all the problems I had been having with choppy games. Thanks a bunch!
Your 3090 should also have a USB C port on it. That's the port I use on my 2070, and it puts out a lot of power too, actually charges my Quest 2 as I use it.
@@GandRpictures Really? Well that blows. Whenever I'm finally able to get a new card, I guess I'll have to use my motherboard's USB-C port. That port only keeps the headset from dying too fast, doesn't put out enough power to actually charge it during use.
I agree with your first points and i haven't watched the full vid yet before typing this comment. I think a huge issue why vr isn't as huge as companies like meta want it to be is because they're not very user friendly or easy to get into. The performance required is ridiculous and not everyone can afford a grands worth pc. Also the fact you have to have alot of different software sometimes to do certain things. The true way vr can become popular is not only becoming more affordable and user friendly but also just making it as easy to understand as an phone.

A note before you take back a cord you bought thinking it is not working. Turn off Air Link if you are going to use the link cable. I had been using Air Link before I got my cable and never turned it off. When I connected the link cable, I seen nothing new and Air link was still the only way to connect to my pc. After turning the Air Link off everything worked and I was in my Rift home ready to game.
Just a heads up to those who are uncapping the usb power usage, make sure it's not running through a usb hub that isn't externally powered, as it could cause your computer to literally fry itself. Happened to me and destroyed one of my RAM cards and left my computer bluescreening on rare occasions. Would not recommend
Oh shit I did that last night as I lost my charger to the headset. I have usb 3.1 slot that's never used so I'll just plug it there from now on and for vr gaming. Thank you very much for that information.
Pro tip to include in a future video? Get a magnetic data and charging cable, Make sure to get/recommend one that does actually do data Qualcom 3.0 protocol (I think needed). Basically they have a tiny USB-C (others too) connector that goes in normally and its magnetic, The cable end also has a magnetic bit and you just need to get them near each other an POP charging and data.. The IMPORTANT and PRO TIP is this will help some people avoid breaking the port, as any excess strain on the magnetic couplings means it unplugs rather than potentially damaging your charging/data port..... Sure someone else has said this before but they are very nice for pretty much anything that needs/uses usb-c, micro usb, and even shitty proprietary Iphone/apple interfaces.

The solution was the cable. I ordered the kiwi-cable - and bam - it worked. thx!
I agree
That USB tip was the best thing ive seen all year. I was completely unaware to that. I kept wondering my my camera kept cutting out mid streams. thanks a bunch!
One of the most useful oculus quest 2 videos out there! My experience is 600% better. Thanks man. Keep up the good work!
This is true I was about to comment the same thing!
The graphic slider sets the RENDER resolution, in the ODT you can set the ENCODE resolution. As far as I know they are two completely different things.
That's what I'm trying to explain here. :)

Back when I was a pot dealer, in the 1970's, I learned the first rule of marketing. The 1st hit, is always free. Zuck is quite likely losing money on the Quest 2 model. He is quite literally gaining the entire planets business. Like him or hate him, a brilliant business model.
Are you rich yet?
Despite the obligatory clickbait, this was an excellent and informative video, thank you.
I don't even have VR, and I've never even tried VR in my life, but you're entertaining 😂
great video, the biggest takeaway is it's no wonder VR isn't catching on more quickly when so much hassle is required to get things working right.
It's alot simpler with a proper pcvr headset, this stuff is for the serious vr enthusiasts
Wow you are wise beyond your years. Fantastic video! Most channels I go to spend 75% of the video doing the damn intro, you just open the info firehose and I for one love it!
Man look at them eyes! Now I know Im in the right spot for some VR info :]
Your use of soundproofing to cure the reverb around your indoor podcast recordings is noted and appreciated. The voice clarity is pro, as expected.
I decided to go with the Oculus cable. saved me from all of the BS and drama. sure, I paid waaaay too much but it was worth it. had mine set up in no time and it made flying in IL-2 sims as real than all of the various head-tracking gizmo's that I have bought over the years FOR LESS. oh, watching movies in a home theater setting, never mind the VR stuff, is nice. 64GB with cable cost me $375, and it was the best $375 I have spent in a while. next up, DCS+MSFS2020. maybe even Falcon BMS?
So connecting the oculus 2 Data link cable to my PC through the Oculus app is successful and indicates connected, then after istrap on the headset and click on “allow access”, it disconnects.
Using Windows 11. Anybody have another method to get this working. I bought the wire because I was unsuccessful connecting to Flight Sim through the air link
@@daver9643 get off windows 11 there ya go
I am brand new to MQ2 and love your videos as you go deeper than most other people posting. Product suggestions are also appreciated as just bouncing around gets overwhelming and reviews are BS. My only suggestion is have one less cup of coffee before filming and speak a bit slower and leave settings screens up a few extra seconds for those of us taking notes. Thanks for the great info.
you uploaded this a day after i placed my order lmao
Really milking that 10 minute meta, hey?
I like how he repeated the same thing at the intro like 10 seconds apart
Hey now, he's just following his personal philosophy; no shame no gain 🤨
this channel is so underrated, love the content man keep up the good work!!

I got my quest 2 and I had no idea what to do. Your videos helped me so much.
It would be cool to see a video comparing the top 5 highest rated amazon link cables to test how good they actually are and how they compare to eachother.
The price, performance, and durability of each of these.
Btw ty for this vid it was great
yeah I got a good one but it would be nice to know what's truly the best set up to buy
ruclips.net/video/Dg9mgcBJ-ZI/видео.html
if they're all rated for the same speeds then durability and price are the most important factors
@@AnimeProfileP1c No some are literally cheaply made and connections fall out and break like my kids did to a Kuject Design USB.
for those of you on windows 11 trying this especially the USB power management you can find it under control panel > system and security > power options > edit plan settings > advanced power settings.
The new V28 is said to be getting a Air Link feature, I’m curious if these setting and things you mention will work still? Please do a video about that if you can, when that feature is unlock on Q2.
I guess those are gonna be the same, and the only thing that will change is the "means of transmission of the data stream" :)
Thank you!! After 6 months I discovered how much better graphics are when you’re linked
Honestly tysm I haven't played vr in ages BC it was laggy and stuff like that but I did a few of these things and it fixed lag and stuff, and now I play vr ALOT more tysm XD
That's cool and stuff
Changing that USB power setting does nothing other than stop the USB being allowed to sleep when NOT in use, it also needs to be done in device manager too but you didn't mention that part.
No mention of USB plug type..
USB TYPE A cannot deliver the power required to keep the headset going so battery will deplete fairly quickly, Like 21/2 hours even when on cable if running 90+ Refresh rate.
The USB cable MUST be TYPE C on both ends and NOT by using an adaptor to gain access to the higher power allowed only by Type C connectors.
Very nice, 6:50 Also some of these settings also apply for rift s as well!
And fyi, enables people just below minimum requirements to still use the cable
i eventually bought the oculus link cable. i owned the party link first and one other off brand cable and they both only transfered half the amount of data the official link cable could. I tested the connections many times while flipping the ends of the cables around. It is expensive but its also longer and quite a bit faster than 3rd party in my personal experience.
Most Nvidia 20xx series cards also have USB C on the actual video card at the back
8 months ago you posted this video and here I am 8 months later thanking you. Just bought 2 quest 2s so my boy and I can play together (don't worry he ain't a squeaker)
Came here because Reddit said Gethip was not a VR sellout trying to make nice with Valve for Oculus. I watched, I liked, I subscribed.
Great video mate, thanks a lot for the reccomendations
I can’t believe I just now found this video! I have been so lost for so long on what to actually do for better performance on my oculus headset!
I've benn wondering why nobody's talking about this stuff. Great video man.
Great video, watched many on this topic so far and still learned something new!
Just got an Oculus Quest 2 and changed these settings. Hope they improve my gaming!
Love the channel man, you’ve been posting such great info for newbies into oculus. Question, do you have any recommendations for third party head straps that come with a batter backup?
best strap for Q2 seems to be boboVR M2 according to reviews
This guide still holds up today, I'm so thankfull. Thank you!
Do you recommend using the link cable over something like virtual desktop? Also have you used any mods to improve FOV on the quest? I have a reverb G2 right now... The picture is really good, but i find it a bit wobbly and hard to get into focus.. plus the FOV doesn't seem that terrific.
no
In my experience, the link cable is much more reliable than connecting wirelessly. It really depends on how fast your wifi is
@@duckduckgoose8049 using the new oculus air link thing I can actually run games extremely well from the headset to pc wirelessly. I do have really fast internet though, so with bad internet air link isnt an option, at least for now
@@blizzit1211 Internet is irrelevant. You can use air link without any internet at all, it uses the local network. You just need a decent 5ghz AC router.
@@jamescelliers3195 unplug your wifi and try it. see how far you get
Thanks for sharing your VR experiences--I tried the original HTC Vive and really enjoyed gaming, then bought the Quest 3 and it lags and stutters even plugged in with a 2.2gbps USB A to USB C cable.
Bruh my pc actually has a Type C on the motherboard 😂 didn't know until he said his had one
I'm rocking a classic 4th gen Z97 chipset so I got a pcie card
😂😂😂trust me I’d probably do the same thing lol 😂
Usb c to usb c is better for example playing in vrchat for hours because it charges the headset while playing (usb c to usb a not) 😉 wich for some people is a good point
Also if you sell your quest 1 then Switch cables
I don't even have the Oculus Quest 2 but I will watch this though

Alright I know I’m a LITTLE late to the video but man I had no clue I could change the refresh rate in the oculus app. That solved all the problems I had been having with choppy games. Thanks a bunch!
Your 3090 should also have a USB C port on it. That's the port I use on my 2070, and it puts out a lot of power too, actually charges my Quest 2 as I use it.
The 30's don't come with a USB C port. NVIDIA stopped adding that on their cards.

@@blueicicle932 - Because he doesn't actually give you useful information, nor does he explain it in a way the average person who doesn't know would understand. This is actually a good tutorial for people. It familiar with setting customization.
When you first buy a usb wire no one really does this much resource on it... More so when its your first quest or rift.

If someone is wondering if Kiwi cable works i just ordered it, tomorrow i will be back with review

OMG I FORGOT ABOUT THE USB POWER SETTINGS THANK YOU!!! it solved issues with some of my other devices too

just a time stamp for me so i remember how to do this
A note before you take back a cord you bought thinking it is not working.
Sleep could you please clarify further what you mean.
@@RoGain_ Don't plug the headset into a non-externally powered usb hub

thank you so much for making these videos. I don't have a Quest 2 yet, but knowing all of this info beforehand is pretty useful.
Sure someone else has said this before but they are very nice for pretty much anything that needs/uses usb-c, micro usb, and even shitty proprietary Iphone/apple interfaces.
do you know if charger dock is good?
Bought my quest 2 today to use for sim racing, got the Kiwi cable you recommended, this video is very helpful, Thankyou.
