    A small addition to the Virtual Desktop preferred codec, AV1 will not be an option if your PC does not have an Nvidia GeForce 40 series or AMD 7000 series GPU. In that case, I would recommend to choose HEVC or HEVC 10bit, as h264 is mostly going to make color muddy when mixed with others. It might be different if you can handle the higher bitrate settings, but that's just from my experience.

      It does increase bandwidth, but indeed no VR headset uses the extra bandwidth yet. It’s about extra headroom more than anything else. I don’t live in a congested area at all and changing to 6E has been a massive improvement to how high I can push the bitrate on AirLink.

      They're two different things. Yes you need to set your IPD(distance between your eyes), but that won't magically fix your need for wearing glasses if you normally use those. If your eyes simply need help focusing at a certain distance, you will still need that with VR, and prescription lenses help avoid the need to wear your glasses in the headset.

      No Virtual Desktop will not be able to use the settings from the Debug Tool, those are just for Link/Airlink. The 10-bit allows for a higher number of colors to be displayed, so in games with dark environments or lots of colors, the 10-bit codecs will likely look better, but might also add a bit of extra latency. Hey, I have a question. For the past few days, I've been struggling with settings, cables, and similar things to configure my Quest 3 properly. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get it to a point where the image is clear and pleasant to the eye. I'm connecting via the Link cable, but the issue persists. Objects up close look quite decent, but there's a significant amount of aliasing when looking at things in the distance. I find it hard to believe that this is normal, as I've read so many reviews praising the resolution and image quality. I used to use the HP Reverb G2 before, and despite having a very similar screen resolution, the quality was far better, both for standalone games and PCVR. Does anyone know why the resolution is so poor? Does the quality seem okay for you, and are you not experiencing such strong aliasing?

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  Год назад +1

      The quality on Quest 3 is really good. Some aliasing in the distance is normal but overall it should be very sharp as long as your PC can handle it. Regarding the G2, I haven’t personally tried one, and not sure what you mean with standalone as it is only PCVR, but my understanding is that while it’s very clear, the sweet spot is tiny on the G2, and significantly bigger on Q3.

    • @Eightfinger
      @Eightfinger Месяц назад

      If you get the aliasing with Quest Standalone titles, you can try "Quest Games optimizer", an amazing tool that increases standalone Quality so much that to me it sometimes felt as if my Quest 3 suddenly became a Quest 4. (No joke! It does use a lot of battery though, and the headset gets way warmer)
      If you get the aliasing on PCVR, despite good quality settings... then you might be in the same boat as I am: It is a bug. A strange bug. One I have not yet been able to clearly identify. Because on another PC with the same specs I did NOT have that issue, but on my own PC I do. I suspect it has something to do with Windows Settings and drivers, not with the Hardware itself.
      You might want to play around with the Bitrate Settings in the Oculus Tray tool. You might want to try a different cable. A different USB port. And: Audiosettings. When I deactivated ALL my audio devices... The image was wonderful. So maybe the problem is with some Audio settings/bugs.

    TL;DR: Virtual Desktop with AV1 codec if you have a 40 series GPU, otherwise use h264+ for outdoor scenes with high bitrate (250-350mbps+ can see things far away clearly like foliage and players), or HEVC 10 bit at a lower bitrate (100-150) for indoor games where you don't have to see as far, as it will have less color banding than h264+, but more latency.
    I pretty much exclusively use h264+ at 280mbps as I mostly play multiplayer FPS games and the reduced latency of h264+ paired with better visibility at distances is perfect.

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  10 месяцев назад +1

      No worries at all for asking. VD is more flexible and also has the AV1 codec available, which Airlink doesn't. That codec makes even lower bitrates look better. Overall I'd say yes, 800 bitrate looks fantastic, but some users just don't have the setup to back that up. If you have a high end PC and high end router with an ideal setup, then 800 will give you better visuals. If not, VD is a great middle ground between performance, latency and visuals. Hope that makes sense!

      So sorry for the very late reply, just saw your comment. Not sure if you still need help, but no, Oculus software doesn’t need to run with any special admin privileges. Regarding OpenXR, it’s normal for nothing to happen when you click it since you’re just selecting which runtime OpenXR applications will use when opened. If you’re strictly using it via cable, then I recommend leaving Oculus as the default OpenXR runtime. If using Virtual Desktop for wireless PCVR, set their proprietary VDXR as the runtime.

    So this guide looks good but I just have one big question that buggs me.
    Why would anyone ever turn down the refresh rate?
    If your pc can´t do 90 fps having 90Hz is still positive and also does not hurt your performance in any way.

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  7 месяцев назад

      That’s a solid question! If your PC can’t push a certain refresh rate, keeping it set to that does actually hurt your performance, since your computer “tries” to hit that, which leads to way more fluctuation in fps and consequently, stutters and lag. A rock solid 72hz will always feel smoother than setting it to 90 or 120 and having it constantly move up and down depending on the in-game scene.

    • @kacarek2402
      @kacarek2402 3 месяца назад

      The biggest thing is that the encoding framerate is static. If you set it to 120, but your pc only renders, for example, 76fps the encoding just duplicates the frames, but the bandwith stays the same. You are essentially wasting the bitrate, since you're not getting 120fps, but encoding at 120, so the image quality is lower (72 fps 500bitrate offers better quality than 120fps 500bitrate). You're essentially throwing away the quality for no reason if you're encoding at higher framerate than your PC can push.

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  11 месяцев назад

      Yes whatever you set in VD/Link will be reported to SteamVR as being 100% resolution. You can supersample in SteamVR in addition to increase the resolution even more if your PC can handle it, but for the most part setting it in VD/Link should be enough.

  • @unlimitedslash
    @unlimitedslash 10 месяцев назад +1

    I think PCVR will increase in quality a lot once AV1 hardware encoding becomes the norm and Vr games start using technologies like FSR3 with frame generation, far from the ideal native resolution and native high frame rate, but should be a good midpoint until GPU's get powerful enough to run those resolutions at 90/120 fps stable, that or maybe a new tech appears that allows for better performance even with actual hardware.

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  10 месяцев назад

      I agree, but realistically AV1 and any other encoding/decoding only happens on 2in1 headsets like the Meta ones. On any native VR headset it will look great by default since it does not have to compress the signal and then decode it.

    • @unlimitedslash
      @unlimitedslash 10 месяцев назад

      @@VRManCave Well, that's not entirely true, even high end 4k monitors (specially those that go into high refresh rates above 90Hz) compress image because HDMI nor DP support such massive data transfers, it's reduced to the point of barely noticable/nonexistent in terms perception but the compression is there, usually all done on a hardware level, so yeah, better ways to encode/decode image actually benefit all headsets in the end.

      I’d love to give you a straight answer, but it depends. For some it seems SteamLink works better, others say the quality is still waaay better in VD or AirLink. Personally I’m still testing.

    I run wired at 120hz, maxed res and 700 bitrate.
    Can I run anywhere near that with wifi6?

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  2 месяца назад +1

      Honestly if your primary use is iRacing, I don’t see the point since the wire is not a big deal while sim racing. You can get those figures with a good wi-fi router yes, but again, not sure if it’s worth it for your use case.

    • @AB-308

      The draw would be for battery life/endurance races. I still get battery drain when connected and running full res etc. if I was wireless could plug in battery.
      There are the inline power cables but I read those impact bitrate. True?

      Yeah I believe they removed AV1 since I made this video. Lowest latency is still probably H.264 but it wouldn't necessarily be a noticeable difference between VD and AirLink. Lowest possible latency is still via wire.

    I am using the Meta Quest 3 with a link cable for simracing games on Steam (AMD GPU).
    Right now, I do not want to use the OpenXRtool kit and OpenComposite.
    In most games, I have the option to start in Steam VR or oculus mode. I am uncertain which one is better performance wise. Even when I get the message in oculus mode your HMD is not supported. Is this still better?
    If so, should the game be started within the Meta environment or in Steam itself?
    Does anyone have a recommendation and maybe an explanation why?
    Thank you very much in advance.

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  2 месяца назад +1

      Doesn’t matter where you start the game, but yeah generally it’s better to go with Oculus mode if it’s available. When using a cable, the Oculus runtime runs anyway, and if you go with SteamVR mode for games, then both Oculus and SteamVR will be running in the background, instead of just Oculus. Hope that makes sense!

      Not sure what you mean by “streamed video” but as the description you’ve added says, Async Spacewarp is the PCVR equivalent of ASW for standalone. It generates “fake” frames in order to make things feel more smooth, but ideally you’d want this off if your PC can handle it.

    • @VRManCave

      I know you can change the resolution for stand-alone in Sidequest, not sure about the bitrate for PCVR. The bitrate would need to be set in the PC software as well, not just in the headset, so I'd say Debug Tool trumps Sidequest(if it's even an option).

    VR/XR/AR brethren...folks, I have a dilemma. I have a PS5/Xbox Series X/PC/Ally Rog that I'd primarily like to use with some type of 'headset' that displays the content from those devices onto the headset screen. I'd prefer it to be hardwired so that I'd have the best visual experience (unless there are devices that deliver an optimal viewing experience from those devices wirelessly). I'd like 4k screen in each eye (if possible), and 120hz (if possible) as well. And of course, all the VR/AR trimmings available (that Netflix VR sounds amazing!).
    Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  Год назад +1

      Unfortunately there isn't a VR headset that works with all of those, and anyway 4K per eye is just too high to run even on a 4090 PC. PS5 has the PSVR2, Xbox has nothing, PC has pretty much every VR headset, and the Ally doesn't support VR as far as I'm aware. Your only real option for something that displays a screen for all of those is a pair of AR Glasses. I've reviewed the Rokid Max glasses a while ago if you wanna check that out: ruclips.net/video/Mxsr6SWF3-8/видео.html - They're micro-OLED, so great colours, 120hz refresh rate, but just 1080p, though because the screen is so close to your eyes it looks extremely sharp.
