The Skydweller’s calendar feature is clever but I’d rather see a watch with the name of month spelled out. It’s a small thing but I don’t want to think about which hour equates to which month. Also it’s too big of a watch.
The thing is, it doesn't even matter which one you'd buy because you can't realistically buy a Rolex these days for anywhere near the MSRP. The "cheapest" Sky-Dweller on grey/second-hand market is around $20-25k.
The JLC is the better watch technically and in finishing. Rolex make some very desirable watches, I would love to add an OP, Explorer or a Daytona to my collection but I have more chance of winning the lottery than getting one from an AD. Being smaller in girth and thinner, JLCs are also more wearable. I have a JLC Master Control Date and would take the JLC here all day long. Great video.
I would have the Sky-Dweller because it is more versatile. A Sky-Dweller could very easily be a daily watch, and even the only watch in your collection. Nevertheless, a JLC pairs with a formal attire much better than the huge chunk of metal that the Sky-Dweller is.
To be honest, i know it's easy for us to act like watch experts and complain about the details that can be hardly seen by our eyes, and that making things pretty at such a small level is incredibly difficult, but i can't help but think Rolex is slacking a bit these days. The marker at 1:26 most probably looks completely fine if i'd look at the watch on the wrist, but then you look at Grand Seiko marker up close and from far away and you notice the subtle difference the extra definition and faceting makes. It does fit Rolex's rugged, tool watch, but also if needs be effortlessly dressy style, but i think what Grand Seiko did is set the bar so noticeably higher that every mistake, every cut corner is now becoming more pronounced, more obvious. They showed us that there is still room for improvement. So as not to bash the Sky-Dweller too much it's still the best looking Rolex for me. The JLC is nice, but it somehow doesn't pull me in, there's something missing with some of their watches, i don't know how to say it... It's a nice watch! But it doesn't want me to have it over some other watch...
The reason this happens is that Grand Seiko has absolutely no brand recognition outside of watch enthusiast communities while Rolex pretty much has the best brand recognition of any watch brand in the world. All brands with less brand recognition have to go the extra mile to sell, Grand Seiko isn't particular at all, they just chose finishing, simple and accurate movements and fancy dials. They could sell other things to make them stand out, JLC does that with "affordable" complications.
The JC is not the one. The Rolex will serve you a lifetime with little issues and it will be like a prepaid credit card on your arm. There is no point is buying a different watch over Rolex for those of us who need the item to retain value and work, day in and day out. You
Imagine if Rolex put the effort into their Cellini line. They make beautiful watches and I wish the Cellinis got more visibility. Jaeger will always lead the pack. Especially after the * deep breath* Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon Westminster Perpétuel, but it is a valiant effort from the young upstart.
The only seiko I got is the sarb017. While I have four sports Rolex. According to many watchmakers, GS parts are almost unattainable and the company only promises to produce parts for 20 years after discontinuation. While a 60 year old (1960s) rolex is still accepted by RSC for servicing and changing new parts. There is basically no authentic parts if you require a full GS service in your lifetime. Let alone passing to next generation. Good luck with GS.
Generally, I'd go with the JLC, as it looks much more refined, and is smaller than the chunky Sky Dweller. That being said, I am not a Rolex hater by any means, but this particular model is not my cup of tea. However, I don't agree on comparing a new watch with a used one, there is a huge possibility just on that factor alone I'd go with the brand new one.

Great video. JLC is one of the best values in luxury watch IMO. Along with GS and maybe GP they are hard to beat for the price.
I like the JLC.
I want both!
After the party Rolex came back with the Sky Dweller and the JLC executives laughed even louder...."You call that a watch, I call it a CLOCK"
The JLC is a watch I love to look at only. The skydweller is a watch I can and like to live with every day
The JC is not the one.
A Grey Dealer, an elegant one, but still very grey.
Please do a review of Minase, a small brand out of Japan.
I would have the sky-dweller as I want complete my mini collection to match my sea dweller, also it would almost gain 40% in value after purchase
*Would take a Grand Seiko, over a Rolex any day.* 💯
The only seiko I got is the sarb017.
Why not aspire to both? Really good reviews!
When the question in the intro came up at 0:31 I said "Probably something from JLC." Twenty seconds later...
that's a rough one skydweller is the better investment but the jlc is the better watch very tough choice both are beautiful pieces
Love the JLC but still would pick the Skydweller. The fact that JLC is 5 year old is a no-go for me.
No comparison,SkyD everyday.Have you ever seen one in person?
Nice video, thank you.
