Photoshop Elements Selective Exposure

Those photos of Rooms near the lake/ river where the sun filters from outside! The eye sees a magnificently beatiful scene, but my camera can take a picture where either the outside is well exposed or the room is, and NOT both! This man is just awesome! Had I come across this earlier, I would have saved 'me-self' frustrations.

even when I group (command G), it still edits the full photo. not just the sky or sand

Make sure you click on the grouped layer then make the changes.
