People say that the merlin is the best sounding engine from ww2, and sure it sounds fantastic, but that radial is something else. The raw power is just so earth shaking it makes you want to cry.
In 1953 I was USAF - Radio Operator - I was on a Island close to North Korea with a British or Aussie { cant remember which 90 yrs old } Air Craft carrier stationed between us and the mainland -- Got a call from the carrier that one of their Seafurys had landed on our beach and could we guard it untill they could transport it back to the carrier - You are familiar with the Seafury so you will appreciate the following - Our beach was flat but on a curve - We got down to the beach and there was the pilot sitting on the wing' - He had DEAD STICKED The Seafury on a curved beach ! We got to him and like a Hollywood Movie He Said :Hello Chaps - Got any Beer at your place -- WOW - - They had to take off the wings to put it on a barge back to the carrier - Did We Have a party with Him and the boat crew --! - -Fantastic Aircraft = Fantastic Pilot Who looked like He was about 17 years old - God Bless Us All

My Dad was the ships doctor for the aircraft carrier that plane came from. Can't remember it's name but I can remember my Dad's name! Dr Micheal Gilks and he got flown around in a Hawker Firefly (?) if I remember correctly. I only just seen this post so am unprepared but I will update the correct details from his/our family photos. Those really were the days!
Thanks so much for posting! My late dad flew these during the 50s and said it was the best aircraft he'd ever flown. Loved it dearly. His log book is a treasured heir loom for me :)

I wonder with the growing idea of propeller driven light attack aircraft acting as close infantry support in uncontested skies, wether someone would think about breaking out the designs for planes like this and see what they could produce by updating them with today’s materials, engines and weapons! Now that i’d love to see!
That was rather amazing to watch and kudos to the pilot his aileron rolls positioning was absolutely spot on, everything was so smooth it was absolutely beautiful in every way! It most certainly was not his first time flying this plane, most likely not even his 40th time in this plane by the look of it! I actually saw a Sea Fury one morning in Fargo, my hanger was behind a largo FBO and as I was taxing out early in the morning I saw the Fury parked at the FBO and it was freshly restored and still in 100% bare aluminum and that plane was beautiful beyond words, If I had not been on a tight schedule I would have stopped to look at it. I found out later the owner of the plane was flying it to Wyoming someplace to be painted, it was a sight I will never forget!!
These old warbirds are truly the hotrods of the skies. They mostly all sound so cool....a certain sound that can only come from a piston engine. Long may they live. There will come a day when no more are flown, and will only be remembered by the fortunate few.

You know, something about that "analog" sound. Yes we have Jets and they are beautiful, powerful and fast. But there is something I can't put my mental finger on be it these prop planes, old Marantz (Sansui, Sony etc) stereo's, 69 Chevy, Dodge Chargers or other "less" capable tech in general on paper. Sometimes the number on paper don't tell the whole story. To ME newer isn't always better. Love it. Hear it. Believe it.

Certain airplanes need to be flown in a certain way to be able to appreciate the machine. This one was flown skillfully and it was an elegant display; the Sea Fury flown to its max, to show its best. A rather artistic performance as well. Pilot and airplane very well matched. Outstanding.
A good aeroplane will fly itself, and a good pilot knows that. The pilot only needs to give it a gentle nudge and the aeroplane will do what the pilot wants it to.
@@dmenace9827 Oh, trust me... when you are doing full-deflection aileron rolls (at about 90 degrees-per-second roll rate, in this case) or five-to-six "g" cuban eights or inside loops, you are giving the stick and rudder pedals Much more than a "gentle nudge", whether in this beautiful aircraft or in a Pitts S-2B "Special" or an SF.260. And it is a workout, counting all the times you have to really tighten your stomach and leg muscles. This is not straight-and-level cruising flight with gentle 20 degree banked turns, y'know, where you can fly with just fingertips on the stick grip and your left hand on the trim wheel.
Nothing like the sound of a radial. P&W, or Centar. Big muscle + big prop + big speed = BIG SMILE! My kinda math. Beautiful shots of the pit and wheel wells, model builders say Thank you!
Wright R3350 and Pratt&Whitney R2800. Fantastic display, the climbs are always spectacular and shows the performance of this ultimate piston engined fighter bomber! Saw her once!
The Hawker Sea Fury was produced with the Bristol Centaurus engine. It is a very fine engine, and unusual, having sleeve valves. It would be great if this plane had one of those fitted, but I guess that parts will be hard to get for them, and maybe expertise to service them.
You are correct on every statement here, unlike almost everyone else who has commented on this aircraft and engine. Good job. Have you worked on the Centaurus engine and the Sea Fury? I have, at Sanders Aircraft in California back in the early 1980s, where I was also their parachute rigger.
@@wilburfinnigan2142 As someone who has worked on a Centaurus, they definitely arent junk. they are a beautiful piece of precision engineering, but sadly very difficult to get parts for. The poor reputation largely comes from RAF use on the Beverley, but that was because some accountant in stores decided it would be cheaper to run them on re-refined oil - something an engine with sleeve valves does not like at all! The Fleet Air Arm had a good run with the engines on the Furies as they used the proper oil.

That prop is huge, beautiful aircraft. The wings looks like those of the Spitfire. Those smoke generators go forever, what are they fuelled by? I love the way after a fast flyby the engine sounds like it's just idling.
The smoke oil is essentially highly refined diesel oil with various vegetable-base dyes added, depending on the color of smoke desired. The generators were an invention of Frank Sanders of Chino, California, which he originally designed for his Bristol Centaurus-powered Sea Fury.
What a great plane, ever since I was a young.boy I have always been fascinated by the Hawker Sea Fury. From memory they have an 18 cylinder radial engine which puts out some real horsepower, thank you so much!
The Bristol Centaurus is a surprisingly tame engine, she don't bark at ya like a double wasp does. But I honestly love that deep bellowing roar a double wasp makes on a flyby though.

Showing Australian markings. Never realised that before, as in Australia had a Naval fleet of aircraft. Loved the double stall turn, the 'knife over', the five point roll. That and all the rest. Very well flown. Kudos to you pilot. That was skills to pay the bills.
Hol up. 2400 hp?? That is an insane amount of hp for a plane that size! I'm used to planes with 100-200 hp so that number is just astonishing. Espacially for machines that are 70+ years old. Today it's pretty simple to have a lot of hp but back then it was a whole different story. Amazing sound btw :D
Probably my fave plane, you don’t see them at many air shows now and I think I’ve only been at two shows where there had been on thundering about and every time I was just stunned.
Even without the Bristol Centaur engine the sound was great. Very nice shot and edited video, the walkaround in the middle was good and I did like the music used. Best part was the nice figures the smoke made.
Pratt and Whitney R 2800. Sweet. Around 1990 there was a Sea Fury named Cotton Mouth flying the Northwest air show circuit. We did some formation flying with him. One of the best pilots I ever saw. We were in a Douglas A 26. Lots of round motors. Nothing like that sound. If anyone has video of Portland Rose Festival.air show for 1990 it would be great to post that. Thank you for this video. Hawker made great planes and the Sea Fury is my favorite.
To anyone asking why it doesn't have a centarus in it it is because they are really rare and almost no spare parts unlike the American radials like r2800 which were produced in much higher numbers

@@MarsFKA my bad not shitty motor but still a bad motor there was a sea fury in duxford with the Centaurus and I talk with the mecanician and they sayed that they change the Centaurus for another motor actually don't know if it's the Wright because they had too much trouble with the Centaurus
andrea eyerolle Yes, such a bad motor, with so many problems that they made 2,500 of them. The only things really "bad" about the engine, which is now more than seventy years old, are that it was/still is more complex than conventional radial engines and that parts and mechanics experienced in working on the type are becoming harder to find. I, too, have spoken to a former Centaurus mechanic, who worked on Sea Furys, and he said that they had a very hard time with the engine, simply because of its complexity. Yet this bad engine powered, and still does power, the last and best of all the piston engine fighter aircraft. Your post provoked a response from me because throwaway comments like "shitty" and "bad", with no other elaboration or expansion are quite often made by people who have no idea what they are talking about.

Alain Charles LEROY It was the royal navy's last piston engined fighter, originally built at the "tempest light fighter" the prototype flew in 1944 and was given the name Fury, it was essentially a tempest II with a cutdown fuselage, similar wings and a new tail. However the RAF had loads of new tempests and didn't have interest in the fury, the fleet air arm however did. After Bolton Paul had "navalised" the Fury it became the seafury. It entered service in 1947 and would stay in service till 1954.

What a beauty! It is definately among the best looking prop fighters ever made. Just look at that nose, mh! Would have loved to see her in the 2 tone camo but she is pretty either way. Almost as pretty as a FW190 D9. And that is extremely high praise from me
Funny how all the commenters pretending to be so knowledgeable about this needing the Centaur engine seem to have no knowledge about the facts that Centaurs are becoming impossible to maintain because there are almost no parts left...
Very similar to FW190 developed from Hawker Typhoon then Hawker Tempest then stick a radial on front. It’s amazing when pushed people come up with similar solutions. Darwinian. Engine was a brute well done Bristol.
Dave Crupel It is a radial engine most noses will look the same there is a compromise between air flow for cooling and extra drag. It’s a fine edge and the look the same because they got the same result.

Bristol Hercules in the Beaufighter is my choice of radial engines.

No, but the Hawker Tempest Mk II was used ... similar aircraft with the same engine.
Chris Richards The Tempest had the Napier H 24 Cylinders while the Hawker Sea Fury had the Bristol Centaurus twin row 18 cylinder radial.

One of ours had the enviable task of taking down a runaway pilotless Auster back in the 1950s because the RAAF jets where to fast.

The smoke oil is essentially highly refined diesel oil with various vegetable-base dyes added, depending on the color of smoke desired. The generators were an invention of Frank Sanders of Chino, California, which he originally designed for his Bristol Centaurus-powered Sea Fury.

What a great plane, ever since I was a young.boy I have always been fascinated by the Hawker Sea Fury. From memory they have an 18 cylinder radial engine which puts out some real horsepower, thank you so much!

The Bristol Centaurus is a surprisingly tame engine, she don't bark at ya like a double wasp does. But I honestly love that deep bellowing roar a double wasp makes on a flyby though.

You can really see that Hawker took inspiration from the famous Spitfire wing. Awesome aircraft
And supermarine borrowed the idea from a German aviation designer. He designed that wing in the early 20's.
Derf. That German wing was not a true elliptical design. It was very inefficient.
Seafury used a Laminar flow wing, not the $hitfire wing !!!!
Showing Australian markings. Never realised that before, as in Australia had a Naval fleet of aircraft. Loved the double stall turn, the 'knife over', the five point roll. That and all the rest. Very well flown. Kudos to you pilot. That was skills to pay the bills.

Hol up. 2400 hp?? That is an insane amount of hp for a plane that size! I'm used to planes with 100-200 hp so that number is just astonishing. Espacially for machines that are 70+ years old. Today it's pretty simple to have a lot of hp but back then it was a whole different story.

Pratt and Whitney R 2800. Sweet. Around 1990 there was a Sea Fury named Cotton Mouth flying the Northwest air show circuit. We did some formation flying with him. One of the best pilots I ever saw. We were in a Douglas A 26. Lots of round motors. Nothing like that sound. If anyone has video of Portland Rose Festival.air show for 1990 it would be great to post that. Thank you for this video. Hawker made great planes and the Sea Fury is my favorite.
To anyone asking why it doesn't have a centarus in it it is because they are really rare and almost no spare parts unlike the American radials like r2800 which were produced in much higher numbers
And it's also because the Centaurus is a complicated motor hard to repair

@@MarsFKA my bad not shitty motor but still a bad motor there was a sea fury in duxford with the Centaurus and I talk with the mecanician and they sayed that they change the Centaurus for another motor actually don't know if it's the Wright because they had too much trouble with the Centaurus

Yes, such a bad motor, with so many problems that they made 2,500 of them. The only things really "bad" about the engine, which is now more than seventy years old, are that it was/still is more complex than conventional radial engines and that parts and mechanics experienced in working on the type are becoming harder to find. I, too, have spoken to a former Centaurus mechanic, who worked on Sea Furys, and he said that they had a very hard time with the engine, simply because of its complexity.
Yet this bad engine powered, and still does power, the last and best of all the piston engine fighter aircraft.
Your post provoked a response from me because throwaway comments like "shitty" and "bad", with no other elaboration or expansion are quite often made by people who have no idea what they are talking about.

It was the royal navy's last piston engined fighter, originally built at the "tempest light fighter" the prototype flew in 1944 and was given the name Fury, it was essentially a tempest II with a cutdown fuselage, similar wings and a new tail. However the RAF had loads of new tempests and didn't have interest in the fury, the fleet air arm however did. After Bolton Paul had "navalised" the Fury it became the seafury. It entered service in 1947 and would stay in service till 1954.

What a beauty! It is definately among the best looking prop fighters ever made. Just look at that nose, mh! Would have loved to see her in the 2 tone camo but she is pretty either way. Almost as pretty as a FW190 D9. And that is extremely high praise from me

Funny how all the commenters pretending to be so knowledgeable about this needing the Centaur engine seem to have no knowledge about the facts that Centaurs are becoming impossible to maintain because there are almost no parts left...

Very similar to FW190 developed from Hawker Typhoon then Hawker Tempest then stick a radial on front. It’s amazing when pushed people come up with similar solutions. Darwinian. Engine was a brute well done Bristol.
Dave Crupel It is a radial engine most noses will look the same there is a compromise between air flow for cooling and extra drag. It’s a fine edge and the look the same because they got the same result.
Or any of the Japanese radials from '43 onwards.
