It sure is on the very short list of super-props. Seeing one in the flesh is astounding, with its tremendous propeller size, and lines so clean you could eat off it.
It’s good to see tempest ii flying again for the first time since 1953 now we wait for the Tempest V JN768 from Richard Grace place and Hawker Typhoon RB396.
Having read the "The big show" multiple times as a teenager this did get me slightly teary eyed. Such a beautiful bird, well done to all involved from a warbirdlover in Sweden.
Duxford is a great museum. Once they got it right the Tempest was a hell of a weapon. My dad was RAF Bomber Command in WWII and his friend (and our near neighbour) Denis flew both the Typhoon and the Tempest.
Saw this last year at the 50th anniversary Duxford show on static display.A lovely aircraft and glad to see it flying again, after a very long restoration. Will worth it l must say👍!
Just fabulous ! Interesting to speculate how this variant would have performed in the way the mkv did for real in service, had it not been for anti radial prejudice by senior RAF personnel Who put the mockers on it just When sir Sydney had a proven prototype (fastest of the lot) and proactive partner at Bristols in Sir Roy, before he unceremoniously parted company with Bristols bosses . (Then along came a gifted FW 190 which totally changed that anti Radial attitude) but too late to hasten the development of this superb aircraft. Thanks for showing her off a real treat.
Great to see. Hopefully there will be many more flights now before the end of season and we can all get to see her flying. You did well in those windy conditions. Even the engine sound was being blown around! You chose a good mid point spot for filming.👍
Awesome! Saw her on finals into Duxford the other day, great to see her airborne again after the recent teething problems. Was surprised just how different the Centaurus sounds in this aircraft to that in the Fury, sounds a bit less refined with a bit more of a rasp to it, both sound amazing though!
@@JohnyG29 on the video maybe, but I was talking about when it flew over my head! I’m well used to the sound the Fury makes and the fact that this sounds different is what made look up :)
One of the most beatiful and most impressive aircraft ever built. The pilot did a great job at managing the gusty winds. Only the landing gear retraction still doesn't run as smoothly as it should.
As I understand it’s the operation of the lever that makes the landing gear do that. It’s explained in the Kermit weeks tempest V film with Richard grace.
Unbelievably beautiful. I live in Australia, but I've been to Duxford on two separate visits to the UK. The last time I was there, the Sea Fury was still intact before it crashed. Has that been restored?
The silver 2-seat Sea Fury T.20 WG655 (G-INVN) had its Bristol Centaurus engine removed and replaced with the perceived to be more reliable Pratt & Whitney R2800 which failed after takeoff and crashed. I believe the wreckage is with the Aircraft Restoration Company at Duxford - might be mistaken there, but am 99% sure it is not restored. The Royal Navy Historic Flight's Extra Dark Sea Grey and Sky painted Sea Fury T.20 VX281 (G-RNHF) was powered by a Centaurus and was wrecked in a crash at its home base RNAS Yeovilton. I believe its wreckage is now at Duxford too owned by The Fighter Collection. Air Leasing Ltd still operates Fury ISS (G-CBEL) painted as the prototype Sea Fury in Temperate Sea Scheme over yellow undersides and it still flies and displays regularly, powered by a Centaurus.
Thanks for all the work you've done to get this plane back in the Air. Google my name and the words Hawker Tempest and you'll see I'm a pretty huge fan of this first Air Superiority Fighter. I made and sold RC Model kits of the Typhoon, Tempest Mk V/VI, Tempest MkII and the Sea Fury. With the bigger tail of the Tempest Mk V (not needed with the radial engine) and the extra span vs the Sea Fury, the Mk II was the sweetest flying of any of them as a model! Plus... every proportion on this plane just plain looks right!
Nothing beats those WW2 piston engined aircraft. You may not know that Sea Furys of the Cuban Air Force helped defeating the invasion forces at The Bay of Pigs in 1961.
One of the finest super props ever made, both we and the Brits hung onto these for very practical reasons, even once jet engines were introduced. They do not suffer from lag time in throttle response. Unlike its jet brethren, which spool up in their own good time. If you have seen the carrier landings which went awry, smashing into the fantail. The Hawker Tempest never suffered from this engine tardiness. With the throttle response of a lawn mower, which is very linear and immediate. While it was a tail dragger, had it been fitted with tricycle landing gear, the struts would have been enormous simply to ensure the propeller arc cleared the ground. The Americans suffered through this period, as they had no shortage of pilots and deep pockets. The last one I saw was parked on the ramp, directly opposite an Australian Sabre, my two favourite aircraft, juxtaposed, one generation to the next. Each a mechanical and engineering marvel.
How did pilot see past that engine? Seen old WW2 film clips of similar aircraft with ground crew sitting on the wings giving the pilot directions using hand signals
Beautiful!!! There's one being restored to flight status in Kelowna BC Canada that's had its first engine run up. It has a Pratt and Whitney instead of the original engine as it was too far gone. Looking forward to seeing it fly!
Well done. This plane must be in the handful of candidates for 'the ultimate piston engined fighter'.
It sure is on the very short list of super-props. Seeing one in the flesh is astounding, with its tremendous propeller size, and lines so clean you could eat off it.
Congratulations to all involved in such a lengthy restoration programme, quite literally a lifetimes work. Stunning.
Fantastic! An engine with a plane bolted on!
It is literally one engine of a Blackburn Beverly with pilot wings tail and guns attached.
It takes a fair bit of power to get 6 tons of fighter to fly at 400+ mph
There aren't many Centaurus engine left I think so this is a really worthwhile restoration.
Amazing to see that beautiful aeroplane in the skies once more, huge congratulations to everyone involved in her restoration.
Bloody marvellous. Well done everyone.
Congratulations to the team that got this beautiful plane back into our skies.

Great to see her back in the air❤
Thumbs up from Amsterdam!
Great achievement by the team - one of a kind rebuilds and operations are not easy!
What a great looking aircraft that sounds good.
Totally brilliant.. Good work getting this beauty back where she belongs 👏
Superb. Congratulations to all involved.
Congrats 👏👏
All Tempest / Fury marks are so incredible. Many thanx 👍👍
Superprops are a different breed, love their looks
Beautiful war bird! It has some size to it but still has a graceful appearance. There were so many great planes from that era! Cheers from the USA! 🇺🇸
SRV - love it. Beautiful tones. Huge propeller arc. Thanks.
Amazing effort. Thanks for putting this bird up again where it belongs !

Yes, passes only, no aerobatics!
I can see and hear why she's so popular , just listen to the beautiful dulcet tones, and she's GORGEOUS 😍

I went to Hendon RAF Museum last year and was struck by the difference in size between the Battle of Britain fighters and those of 1943 onwards.
A truly amazing feat for the team. Nice to see it in the air again.

Great restoration, that Centaurus sounds so good.
Fantastic news! Congratulations to all those involved.

Beautiful airplane, getting that engine rebuilt must have been a real challenge!
Lovely to see and hear.
I would so love to hear a Sabre engine aloft.
this specific aircraft never flown with Sabre, but with Bristol Centaurus with a 5 blades right runing propeller
