- Comparing the North American P-51D Mustang against the Hawker Sea Fury FB.11 flying at the same airshow. Looking at both Warbirds at a technical point of view and at the takeoff, display and landing.

The stock Sea Fury had 2550 hp with the Bristol-Centaurus 18 engine. My friend the late Lloyd Hamilton owned N588, Race 16, Baby Gorilla. Racing the plane up at Reno Air Races. After the race event we'd fuel the plane then wipe down the airframe. That's it.
All the other planes that raced in the Unlimited Divisions would have to have their engines looked over. Not the Bristol. The reason we don't see many stock Sea Furys with Bristol engines is because of a lack of available parts and people that can rebuild this sleeve valved engine.
Wow thanks for that Information
Lloyd had an off airport landing in the desert near Tehachapi pass heading home after the Mojave race in 72? 73? in Race 16, Larry Rengsdorf was in the back seat. He also had an engine failure near Santa Rosa, ending up in a plum orchard. Both failures were Centaurus engines. I found Race 15 in Holland and Lloyd and I went and got a couple of months later. Sadly the engine had gone to a trade school and we never found it.

Such a shame they did not know how to look after the Centaurus engine.

Thank you for not adding music or commentary over the sounds of the engines. Outstanding.
^^^THIS ZOMG YES thanks so much for the sweet sweet engine sounds! Sometimes I watch airplane videos with the sound off because of this.
You’re welcome
This is the way I think all aviation videos should be made. ENJOY the sound of the engines and the aircraft doing what they were designed to do. No Music....Great job! Thank you!
I really think a little Metalica would have added to the realism.
I agree these engines sound Amazing!
All debates of merit aside, can we all agree that watching these two fly is just a big ol' bunch of fun?
Yes please !
greymattervandal they could have put the Sea fury engines on the constellation. Less maintenance. Less breakdowns
My father in law was stationed at base Shearwater when and American came in with his Mustang, A plane he obviously loved. While there he was invited to fly a Sea Fury. When he landed he wanted to trade aircraft.
@@Warbirds Amazing how quickly planes developed in WW II. Fighters over 100 mph faster at the end of the war than during the Battle of Britain, bombers carrying 2-3 times the weight, faster, and longer ranges. And just missing the war you had (effectively) you had the Meteor, P-80, Shackleford and B-36 getting ready to go operational. Yes, I understand the Meteor was in use over UK, and the P-80 also made some flights, but these were not truly front line planes just yet. Kind of like the Luftwaffe's Comet, not quite ready for prime time yet.
Absolutely! The sounds of these Warbirds are just something else!
Just magical video for me, thank you! Love both aircraft. My late dad flew the Fury FBII (as well as predecessor Tempest and various other types, plus Supermarine Attacker, 1st gen jet). Dad always said the Fury was the most perfect plane - flawless and a joy to fly. I love this video because he used to tell his wide-eyed son of the aerobatic qualities of his aircraft, the sound of the engine, etc. Now I can see and hear it properly, and experience a little of the exhilaration he felt, piloting this beauty. Many thanks!

What a lovely memory to have , this video must have been very emotional for you. Respect.
The Sea Fury is such a clean, fast and smooth looking airplane
Unlike the Mustang which is bulky, boxy and down right hideous. 😁

Wow! Prior to seeing this beautifully-shot video, I was not at all familiar with the Sea Fury. Needless to say, I’m suitably impressed. This airplane’s power to climb vertically seems limitless. Whoever was flying it is a heck of a pilot. Of course I lust over the P-51, but it was really fun to discover something new. The setting for these flights is magnificent. The videographer did a superb job of making it an important part of the whole production. Bravo! Thanks for sharing your skill and your love of classic aircraft.
The sea fury was even more impressive with its orginal engine, which this one sadly has not.
What engine is this one running?
Hawker Fury was a development of the Hawker Tempest, which was developed from the Typhoon. Fury never saw service in WW2 but gave good service in Korea. It was adapted for naval use because early jets needed longer runways. Hence the Sea Fury.
Indeed this beautiful sea fury belong to a famous pilot in France. He is known to be an incredible pilot in all kinds of aircrafts.

P-51 looks great, and nimble ASF but the Sea Fury is beastly!!
looks nearly as good as the aircraft it copied, the the MB3 minus the firepower
We had the Hawker Sea Fury in the Canadian Navy while I was stationed At Shearwater Naval Base in the time I was in 1954 to1964. I like the P-51 it a lot more publicity than the Fury. Which helped it be more noticeable but that Fury could sure haul ass. We had a few pilots that were young and adventurous and they really could make those birds put on a show. I had the great opportunity to do a run up of a Fury that was in a tie down so it wouldn't take off and thank God it didn't. That was a thrill I will never forget we had it actually dancing up and down on the tires. Oh to be young and a little crazy again.
Wow thanks for the Story

This Marine is kinda fond of the Corsair. That being said, I love the sound of all WWII aircraft! Kudos to the folks who keep them flying!
All variants of the Corsair through the years have been outstanding aircraft.

Beautiful planes! Great footage!
About 10 years ago I was doing some defense contracting work south of Sacramento on a small airfield and saw several Sea Furies all in Iraqi war paint. They were the real thing and were being converted to racers. Impressive with 5 bladed props. And tough navy construction. Castro ran these during the Bay of Pigs.

You should hear one with a Centaurus engine and a five blade prop. Not only does it perform every bit as well but it sounds even better. Sea fury is an excellent machine, of that there is no doubt.
It has been sometime since I watched and heard the Sea Fury fly like this. Actually it was at Reno/Stead. To hear a radial engine with that power was humbling. Like then, having both the Sea Fury along side the V 12 power house Mustang showing their stuff put a smile on my face. P-51 beautiful? Hmm, with the clipped flying surfaces and 'pregnant guppy' cooler it's one of the ugliest WW2 aircraft. Effective, though!
All the comments on here complaining that the comparison was mismatched. It is what it is, guys, because at air shows you don’t have the luxury of saying “Bring me a such and such engined so and so”. You film what’s there.
Thanks Mick
QED Really then the poster should NOT make such ridiculous claim and just show the planes flying for what they are !!! Sea Fury did NOT make the show in WW II !!!!
Wilbur Finnigan
Forget to take your chill pill this morning, Wilbur? Either that, or that horse you’re sitting on is so damned high you can’t get off.
The poster made no claims. There was no commentary and the only subtitles gave technical details of each plane.
He was at an air show where they flew two beautiful examples of the high point of piston/prop driven airplane technology, and he shot some lovely video of them being put through their paces. Then idiots came clambering in, rooting for their “fave” and claiming he should have used different planes or different engines. I merely pointed out to said idiots that he didn’t have that option and then an even bigger idiot (you) clambers all over my comment with evident indignation (all those !!!) at the poster.
So the Sea Fury didn’t quite make it to WW2. So what? Does it detract from the video?
@@q.e.d.9112 QED DUMB ASS!!!! Mustang was as built and as it served in WWII !!!! DUUUUUHHHHH!!!!!!! And to even compare the two is the height of stupidity !!!!! DYUUUUUUUUHHHH!!!!!
@@wilburfinnigan2142 What I see as a hight of stupidity is bitching about when and where each plane came into existence like there's some kind of contest rather than just enjoying 2 different outstanding show stoppers of a similar era. My family and I went to an air show at an air force base in Orange county Calif, which was shut down a couple years later. They always featured the Thunderbirds which in my opinion put on a far better show them Blue Angels. Anywas, there was a Mustang just putting on a great show with full speed low passes the whole enchilada. Suddenly a Sea Fury showed out of nowhere with the engine Screaming at what seemed going twice as fast as the Mustang, making everyone stop dead on their tracks I had no idea those things were so powerful and so fast. I became an instant fan of Sea Furys. The show it out on made the Mustang look like child's play. In fortunately they came into service as WWII ended.

My fix for the evening thank you great video.
That Sea Fury is a BEAST!
The Centaurus powered ones are even better but there aren’t many of them left.
I see a lot of vintage planes and police helicopters messing around over and around my house in SE England, probably because all around are wide open fields where they can land if things go south. I also live not very far from Old Warden, home to the Shuttleworth Collection, who have frequent air displays. On one occasion (alas, no mobile phone cameras then), I recognised the breathy howl of a Merlin engine and dashed into my garden. There was a Spitfire Mk IX doing barrel rolls, bunts, split S, you name it, at full power. And then he did something I have never seen at an air show. He did a steep climb to about 30,000 feet and went into a full power dive, and pulled up almost at rooftop height, surely ticking off close to 500mph. The sound! I swear I could hear the supercharger sucking in air by the bucketload, and the angry yet defiant roar of the engine was intoxicating. I wish I could have recorded it. You never see it on air dhows, because it would probably breach health and safety guidelines, but I'd have it on RUclips, totally without music, as is this video.
She's not a Spitfire, but the Mustang was built to an RAF requirements spec for a long-range fighter escort, and she carries the beating heart of the Spitfire. The sound in the video is fantastic!

@@barrierodliffe4155 wow, Barrie Low-life displays ungrateful passive-aggressive publicly; such a lack of gratitude for the 80,000 men that paid their lives flying bombers over Europe. The P-51 single-handed ended the bombing campaign over Europe by providing air supremacy to the bombing runs and their safe return. Without the Merlin engine, the P-51 was incomplete; without the American airframe the Merlin was a solution looking for a platform. Wonderful example of both Americans and Brits working together ti #win. God Bless all that paid the ultimate price!

Gratitude for USA profiteering and doing a fraction of the job the RAF did in Europe.
The P 51 did nothing single-handed and even after Britain gave USA the best aero engine the P 51 was not close to a Spitfire in performance, it was the Spitfiire that achieved air supremacy in Europe. Without the Merlin the P 51 was rather useless, with the Merlin it was good but not close to a Spitfire except for range because of the Merlin and British drop tanks.

At Oshkosh back in '90 or '91 there was a Sea Fury with tip smoke (love that!) and a Mustang doing laps with the Fury leading. He'd go down show center (right to left) then at the end of the runway pull up hard and bank right to go out over the lake with the Mustang following about a half runway length behind. The coolest part was the turbulence from the pull made the tip smoke swirl and then converge in a big ring which about as soon as it fully formed was center punched by the Mustang. They did this over and over and it was just so neat to see. Great video and thanks for the wonderful sound!

@@timothyphillips5043 yeah, the role it played. The USAAF was conducting day time unescorted bombing missions into Germany. Unlike the Brits, they didn't hide under cover of darkness and were taking heavy losses. It got so bad that they called off the long range missions until an effective escort could be found. That's when the mustang came on the scene and enabled the US military to resume the deep bombing missions and hasten the end of the war. Actually the better comparison would be the Sea Fury vs F8 Bearcat. Both carrier interceptors / CAP / F/bombers that were just too late for ww2 however both saw action in Korea. F8 was quick, and light (small size) to protect the fleet from kamikaze attack until used as a FB with Bombs and rockets. Sea Fury 40 kts faster and similar mission as F4U. Wide gear could be loaded down bombs, rockets and cannons. Was not quick in roll but faster than F8. Internal range not as Good as F8 because of 20mm. F8 with .5 cal had longer legs (endurance) for CAP more internal fuel and designed as an interceptor first and adapted to FB roll. Another too late WW2 plane was AD1 Skyraider.
Thanks for your comprehensive and high Qualified comment
Eric 'Winkle' Brown flew both, and was by his accounts extremely impressed by both aircraft. Said that in effect the Bearcat and Sea Fury were equally good, they had slight edges over the other in some areas, but slight disadvantages as well.
Might as well toss the Grumman F7F Tigershark into the mix as well --- another carrier based fighter that was just a bit too late for WWII. It saw limited action in Korea, mostly as a night fighter and attack aircraft. There's one that makes the local air shows, and it is a real beauty.
@@mwmcbroom I saw a pair of F7s last week in Colorado. Beautiful planes in top condition. For a fighter. I will always take the speed and the 20mm over maneuverability and longer legs
@@Shadowboost Speed and firepower does have its advantages, doesn't it. In that respect, the Sea Fury and the F7F are almost in a dead heat. Both have top speeds of 460mph and both carried 4-20mm cannons. The F7F is a bit of an edge in firepower, though. It also carried 4 .50 cal machine guns. It also had the edge in range (1200mi vs 1040 with drop tanks). As far which was the more maneuverable? Eh, who cares, with that sort of top speed.

Both beautiful aircraft, and a great video. For me, there is no greater engine sound than the Merlin engine. I was fortunate enough to fly in one of the Collings Foundation P-51 in 2010, and I will cherish that day always.
Cool 😎 thanks for commenting
You're welcome, :) Because my father machined Merlin engine parts at one of the RR factories during the war. A few years after the war he moved to North America and worked in aircraft factories. Here he had to "cool it" with the tolerances he was after on lathes and mills because RR set higher standards than what was normal elsewhere. It had become automatic practice for him so he had to unlearn some things. I've still got a few of his small hand tools with his name engraved on them. I should donate them to an aviation museum soon.
That Sea Fury is for sale in case any multi-millionaire reading this is interested. Editing to say thank you to the OP, this is a tremendous video. I really enjoyed.
I saw a sea fury accidentally as I drove past a display in Warwickshire, England. The elliptical wing got me thinking it was a Spitfire, but the fuselage was very different. I had to ask a passer by what plane it was. Anyway it was outstanding. Lots of grunt and power. Almost as beautiful as the p51
Almost as beautiful yes
I have seen a genuine Sea Fury fly with the Bristol Centaurus 18 Engine on many occasions alongside Mustangs, F4U Corsairs, P40's , Spitfire's and a Hurricane. There is nothing that looks like it or sounds like it, it is an amazing and beautiful aircraft.
The irony; an American aircraft originally designed to use an American engine, the Allison, sporting a British designed engine whilst the British plane, designed to run a British engine (the Bristol Centaurus) is running an American designed engine, albeit it is an "after market" retrofit...
Of course, in the film the Battle of Britain we had shots of Merlin-powered Spitfires battling Merlin-powered, Spanish-built Bf109s...

Spanish Hispano HA-1112-M4L
@@AreeyaKKC yes, and at least one still flying. Here's one in Luftwaffe markings as a Bf-109 but unmistakably sounding like a Spitfire or Hurricane due to the Merlin engine

That exactly what I was thinking!
Yes if your a Merlin powered bf 109.........................Im sorry but youv'e lost it in the looks dept.
The Hawker is a gorgeous powerful airplane, thanks for the look, though personally I would have preferred it if they'd canned the smoke. It distracted from the getting a clear look at the plaine during its maneuvers.
Both are beautiful! Both sound beautiful! I’m partial to the song of the V12 Rolls Royce. Damn, now that’s music!
Awesome thanks
Love the Australian Kangaroo on the sea fury go Aussies.
Go Sea Fury Go
Another great pity is that the CAC CA-15, also known unofficially as the CAC Kangaroo, which was a project developed TOO late in Australia itself (for WW11) and which ended up being cancelled due to the growing potential of jet engines in that period- never achieved production. This machine, being Australian, both sported the Kangaroo insignia and was named "Kangaroo" while, in appearance, seemed to suggest what a Mustang on steroids might look like.
Year: 1946
Status: Cancelled
POWER: 1 x Rolls-Royce Griffon 61 12-cylinder inline liquid-cooled engine developing 2,035 horsepower.
Speed (Max): 447 mph
Climb Rate: 4,900 ft/min
Proposed Armament: 6 x 0.50 caliber M2 Browning heavy machine guns in wings
PROPOSED OPTIONAL: 10 x High-explosive rockets (five per wing) or 2 x 1,000lb conventional drop bombs (one per wing)
Both are great aircraft. Do visit the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, Ontario. See the Lancaster. Avenger, B25, C47 Catalina and many other great planes.
The Sea Fury is an utter beast..what a beautiful looking, lethal machine
Thanks commenting and watching!
Imagine it with the H-24 Napier Sabre sleeve-valve from the earlier Hawker Typhoon and Tempest... revved to 4,000 and latter day versions hitting 3,000 HP from only 37 litres. The most compact aero-engine ever.
Great planes
Wonderful video
Superb piloting skills
Thank you so much
Thanks watching
Astonishing to consider that these two amazing aircraft were designed and built more than 7 decades ago....
And the Sound is better than every plane built these times
Roger Dodger these were built only 40 years after first powered flight... less than 20 since Sopwith and Fokker aircraft fought over France. A pretty amazing surge in technology. At that pace it is not surprising modern fighters have evolved into high tech wonders, but interestingly they don’t fly any faster than they did 50 years ago. I guess you have to understand and appreciate engineering and history to comprehend my comment.
Sea Fury would smoke that Mustang...but the ol' Stang was the one that won the war. Sea Fury came along too late...like the Bearcat.
Awesome video!
Thanks liking the Video
Mustangs flew from England and the reason there was an England to fly from was because of the Spitfire and Hurricane, so lets not say the Mustang won the war without giving a little credit to the planes that did the real heavy lifting. BTW I like every plane mentioned, each had their role to play, cheers
You have to be kidding.
Robert the only thing that Sea Fury would smoke, in a stock configuration is its Bristol Centuarus engine, why that plane has a R2800 PW !!!!! Facts !!!
@@denmalski Without the American supplied 100 octane av gas those merlin powered Shitfire and Hurrycanes were toasted by the Germans !!!!
That whistling sound - superb :)

Love both of these planes and I am a huge WWII fan. Both sound awesome but my favorite in the Merlin powered P51. WOW.
Danke einfach grossartig dieses Video Liebe diese alten Flugzeuge haben noch karakter und der Sound mega Gruss thomy
Danke Thomy
Das ist richtig :-)
That Mustang sound . Awesome
I Love it
Correction! That Merlin sound!! 👍
@@idleonlooker1078 yea, that Merlin sounded great without the plane, cool beans
This is awesome. Thank you for making this video.
My only wish: A demonstration of dogfight capabilities, switching chase positions.
These 2 are great eye candy, as representative of the culminating beauty of era development.
And what an era of development: the Mosquito, P-38 Lightning , F-4 Corsair, and the Spitfire...Gorgeous is accurate!
Thanks watching. I saw a dogfight once ... nearly impossible to film .
Well said! They're all my favorites too!
It would be no contest, the Sea Fury would eat it. More power, more speed, more fire power, greater energy, faster climb and more manouverable.
