  • Nightline investigates "food neophobia" -- the fear of food in the case of 7-year-old Erin. Erin is an extremely picky eater. Most kids love pizza, chicken nuggets, hamburgers, hot dogs and cheese, but the list of foods Erin will eat is brief.

Erin Graham refuses to eat meat, vegetables, pasta or salad and is even choosy about desserts.
Erin is an extremely picky eater. She enjoyed breakfast foods like French toast, some fruit, grilled cheese sandwiches -- only with American cheese -- chips, French fries, crackers and lots of peanut butter, but only a specific kind.

@@sabriaghee6153 Don’t ever let your kids enter a “survival mentality” by basically starving them. There are mental disorders both in poverty and abundance. This is why anxiety and depression still take hold regardless of economic background. Your child probably never had ARFID, if she did, then she would’ve starved herself (which is one of the basis of the diagnosis). There are kids who are built like Anorexics because they starve themselves and have to get hospital treatment before starting therapy. Don’t downplay a mental illness because you were “cured.”

I had this for most of my childhood. I'm 23 now and things are way better, however this is not a joke. I remember wanting to try certain foods but my brain stopping me from picking up a fork and eating it and I remember sitting in a restaurant and knowing it's wrong to be the way that I am but stuck on how to fix it. I remember when I was about 6 years old, my primary school did a curry tasting session one day for our class and I hid in the toilets before a teacher realised I was missing and then forced me to eat something in front of the rest of the class because "I was being rude for not trying anything" when my brain physically wouldn't let me. I also had acid reflux as a baby and I used to get bullied over my eating habits at school and kids would either throw food at me that they knew I didn't like or even with my closest friends I would stay over at their houses and they'd ask me why I was the way I was and try and hold me down so I'd eat pizza and stuff (Now I realise they obviously weren't real friends) but things like that traumatised me and also what made matters worse is that my family made such a huge deal about it when I did try something and that embarrassed me and made me not want to do it again.
It started getting better when I was around 16 because I realised friends were inviting me out to meals and parties and I realised if I didn't eat or refused to eat then I could easily lose those friends as they'd think I'm weird and so I used to look on the menu for an item of food that was closest to something I'd eat and then try that, e.g trying a Salmon fillet because I ate tuna and thought it might be similar or noticing it came with mash potato and veg (which I loved) and realising that if I didn't like the salmon then it didn't matter as long as there was something on my plate that I was willing to eat.
I do still struggle with this sometimes today but I am getting there, my taste buds are willing to accept a lot more foods nowadays and I'm comfortable eating certain foods in front of people and I do have a balanced diet. I never realised that what I had was a condition, I thought I was just weird but back in the 2000s there was no help for me and everyone looked down on me for it. I am proud of myself for how much I've overcome and dealt with.
There may be some of you in the comments who see this and just think, "Wow she's weird" or "This is dumb". I ask you to hold back your judgement and instead try and emphasise and think about what it must be like to want to eat something but having no willpower in your head to physically pick up a fork and do it. It's been a challenge and it's taken a lot of hard work, no one is to blame but myself and I wish I never had these struggles but I'm proud of myself now for doing as well as I have and now being able to say that I have a balanced and healthy diet 😊

I tried to gently probe why she didn’t want to eat other foods and she described it very much like you just did.. I think she wants to but her brain just stops her from trying new things… she also doesn’t like change so I think it’s also an anxiety/control issue ..

This was our story. Our son wouldn't eat anything. I made him instant breakfast every day and used 2 packets to add calories. We took him to Children's Hospital, we tried everything. Oddly enough he did like French toast, pancakes and eventually grilled cheese. He started eating peanut butter when he was about 8 and poptarts . I worried constantly about his health and weight. This went on for several years. When he was in middle school he got invited to stay over at friends houses, I thought he'd starve. That's where he learned to eat cheese pizza. Oh my gosh, I was thrilled. Every time he stayed at a friend's he'd try something different. Not too different but progress was progress. Fast forward... he went away to college, we took him out to dinner and he ordered fish and chips but asked for broccoli instead of fries I was stunned.... he's now married and we all went out for Chinese not too long ago and he ordered crispy DUCK! Duck, for the love of God. I thought my eyes would come out of my head. He cooks all the time now and makes really good food, I'm beyond amazed.

I needed to eat alone and with lots of water to help me wash down the food. I'm not sure why sweets were okay for me, not "actual" food though. People commenting who don't have this condition have no idea what they are talking about. It's not that you don't want to eat; you really do. But imagine that just about everything makes you physically wretch. That's what happens, you try new foods, it gets to the back of your throat and your tongue literally throws it back out. It is so painful, embarrassing and debilitating, that eating when anyone else is there becomes a nightmare. You very quickly identify what you can and can't eat without throwing up. You try the very best you can and it can take years to add just one food to your diet. I have suffered with this my entire life. I have tried hypnosis, counselling, kinesiology and desensitizing therapy. Nothing has worked. It is a constant 'thing' in one's life, and folks mouthing off about how it is just being 'picky' or juvenile don't have any idea what a pain in the butt it is.

Then wouldnt it be something to with the taste buds or that specific part of your brain? I would think that in 2016 they could run some test and narrow down the problem. Like finding out what foods you do eat and see if their are similarity in taste or texture between them. This girl seems to eat alot of sweets. Its been proven that sugar is very similar to cocaine in the way it produces serotonin in the brain. Could she just have an addiction to sugar?

Dark Souls You make some interesting points. Sugar is the devil every which way...lol. However, as to research, there is currently a major research attempt being made by Duke University. Many picky eaters are probably what is known as 'supertasters' (my son PE is definitely a supertaster, he can literally identify something that has just been in contact with something else. As a child he could pick up a toy and say what the plastic was made of and who was the last person to touch it).
It is an extremely complex issue and most PE are looking forward to more research into our condition.

Imagine if every bite you took, you knew there was 50% chance of being poisoned. You'd be scared shitless of food, especially new foods. That's how her mind works. I'm an adult with this and it's horrific. Eating is a nightmare. Using the word "picky" is so belittling and insulting. My parents just thought I was picky so they would try to force me to eat things. It was genuinely traumatizing without intervention from a specialist. The best way I can describe it is like being terrified of spiders, and being told to eat them. Starving her won't work. I didn't eat for 4 days. It wasn't enough. "Unsafe" food makes me vomit on contact. I'm praying they can help her. I was the same way when I was a kid with mostly eating sweets, and the majority of what I can eat is still sweets. When you eat the same things over and over for 30 years, you start to hate them. I used to at least like the foods that I can eat. Now I hate eating entirely. I force myself to eat, but it's not enough and my liver isn't doing great. I'm seeing specialists, but it's not enough. This is a very, very, very serious disorder. The messed up part is that people like to tell me how lucky I am because they're having trouble losing weight. It's disgusting. I'm likely going to die early, but man at least I'm not chubby. What a horrifying mindset.

Some of yall need to get your heads out of your butts. This girl has a real problem and it's not her parents fault. When the lady described the mind of a picky eater, she was pretty spot on. You do not know what it's like to be a picky eater or have a picky eater child. I have sensory issues so I can understand a lot of her preferences. Like the only creamy peanut butter. And only certain brands. I don't know about her taste, but for me, I can taste a difference in brands of food when other people often can't. And sometimes it's gross. It is not bratty to have food preferences. Walk in people's shoes, educate yourself and have a little empathy.

I know her cause of fear of food is different, but to everyone complaining "she just wants sugar" etc, when richer foods make you feel sick, you find your safe foods. Mine are always carbs and are mostly always sweet. Muffins and cereal and my top safety foods. I hope she's doing a lot better now, it's really hard to push through.

Part of this girl's problem may be she has an actual food allergy or sensitivity that the parents don't know she has. If she was made to eat things that made her hurt or not feel well, I can see how her mind would reject accepting food she did not already know didn't hurt her.

People sometimes get mad at me for drinking water after chewing, but if I force myself to try shallowing food without water, I would just end up vomiting, and all my hard work of eating will just go to waste, and so does the food. I'm glad that her parents is so understanding. The doctor is right she'll eventually outgrow it, especially that she is very willing to change.

You have to try it first to see if you like it or not, if you don’t like it, that’s okay because you can just be proud that you tried it. Try to do the same with other foods you haven’t tried.

I had food neophobia as a child aswell, fairly sure I was five when it started, and 7 when it ended. For a solid two years I wouldn't eat a single thing. I was mainly scared of choking and swallowing. The only few things I would eat was icecream or very mushed mac and cheese, because I couldn't really choke on those things. I was so terrified of swallowing in general, I wouldn't even swallow my own spit. I remember I would just sit in my 2nd grade class and get up every now and then to spit out any saliva I had, because I would be too scared to swallow it. I would also always start gagged randomly, thinking I was choking on a piece of hair or small bead. I was taken to the hospital many times for this but the doctors just said I was faking it because I was a picky eater. I was WAY more than a picky eater, it's a real condition and im glad this girl got the right light shown on her during this time. I remember when I was recovering from this condition, I was so excited everytime I could swallow the littlest bite of my favorite food, pizza. I'm 14 now, and I no longer have trouble eating or swallowing!

All these people are calling her a "brat" or a "bitch" but neophobia is a mental disorder just as real as a mental disorder like anorexia. The fact is, they are I convinced that she's just not eating it because she doesn't like it or the way it looks, but she literally can't help it. When she sees a plate of food that she's never tried, it scares ever because she knows that there's no way she will be able to try it. Deep down, she wants to be able to try it. The problem is that her mind won't let her. The problem with neophobia is that even if they bring themselves to try the food, they will almost never like it because their brain will override their taste buds when they begin to put it in their mouth by saying "this will be horrible" and so it is. Just because it's a mental disorder you don't understand doesn't mean you should act like it's not one at all.
