Infiniti G35 Steering Wheel, Air Bag, and Clock Spring (Spiral Cable) Removal

  • **WARNING**
    Some people have reported that they needed their steering wheel angle sensor reset after replacing their clock spring. For a greater chance of avoiding this problem, please follow these two steps:
    1) Make sure your steering wheel is at the 12 o'clock position and wheels are pointed straight ahead before you begin.
    2) Also, the WHITE plug I mention in the video is how the steering wheel angle sensor connects to your car. Leave it plugged in like I did, just to be safer.
    If your steering wheel angle sensor needs to be reset, the SLIP and VDC lights will come on and you'll likely need your car towed to a Nissan/Infiniti dealership. If you do need your sensor reset, try the Nissan Datascan II software and try to reset it yourself first. END OF WARNING.
    My horn and steering wheel radio controls stopped working. They only worked when I turned my steering wheel past a certain point. That was the dead giveaway that my clock spring was bad.
    In this video, I remove the air bag, steering wheel, and clock spring from a 2005 Infiniti G35. These may be the exact same steps with other Infinitis and Nissans, like the 350z.

    Word to the wise, don't ever bang, use a hammer, or any impact style puller to remove a steering wheel from the column. Doing so may result in damage to the steering column and steering column bearing. Use a proper puller, aka a compatible puller kit to remove and install the steering wheel. If you do not own a kit, then rent one from your local parts store really cheap. The video above was flawless up to that point. I am a ASE certified Master Technician.

      Thanks, I agree. I should've been more specific about my banging. I only used my girly hands for the that.

    Thank you for the guide! I was able to replace mine on 05 G35 without issues. Left the white plug hanging, no vdc lights.
    To all, I recommend to replace only with a genuine clockspring part. Don't cheap out.

    WARNING: Be VERY careful pulling the steering wheel!!
    Thanks for posting. I used your overview to pull remove and replace (with a new one) the steering wheel on my GF's EX35.
    Only problem: I tugged on the steering wheel and it came RIGHT off, destroying the clock-spring when it came off.
    Off to find a clock-spring now.

      Ouch, sorry to hear! It's easy not to break things when you're a weakling like me.
      I got my clock spring nearly half off brand new on ebay. I asked a dealership for the part # and began a month-long search for the cheapest price. Luckily someone put one up for sale. It was listed as a clock spring for a Nissan Murano, but it was the exact same part # as my G35. Good luck!

      I have the same problem, my vdc off and slip lights are on and the dealer says i need a new spiral cord (clock spring) and something reset the angle sensor. Will doing this fix that problem? and can you give me the part # for the clock spring that u replaced? i need to find one too.
      thanks a bunch

    And when re installing the airbag, seeing the airbag light flashing indicates a properly installed airbag. However if it does not go off or you get a warning indicator reading a airbag malfunction light, then something went wrong. As always, refer to manufacture instructions when dealing with airbag and steering column components because getting it wrong can get expensive very quickly

    Thanks for this. My airbag light is on and does not clear with a reset. My mechanic said it is the clock spring, however, my steering wheel controls and horn all still work. I asked him about this and he said it could still be the clock spring. I'm skeptical but I might try to replace it and see.

    Hmmmn... my radio controls and cruise controll buttons dont work on my steering wheel. Got the volume button to work once when turning the steering wheel in a funky position and slapping it up. Wonder if it's the clockspring.

      Hey, I saw your question on G35Driver. If your budget is AUD200, then you can probably pay full price from a dealership. My advice is to ask a Nissan or Infiniti dealership for a quote and the part #. You can message the seller from that ebay link. Circle Infiniti is a dealership. Then search for the best price on your own. I am pretty sure there are differences from year to year -- 2003 won't be the same as 2007. You don't want to guess and guess wrongly!

      somecarstuff Hey, I live in australia and I called Repco to find me a genuine ones and they said they will call me back. And the one on ebay, I have to send my VIN number for the part. Do you think that will do?

      danyduy yes, the VIN is all they need to know which part fits your car. Good luck!

    2005 G35 has the SLIP and VDC light and did not disconnect the white plug. Not sure if it happened bec the steering wheel was not precisely straight.
    A Firestone mechanic cleared the steering angle sensor and charged a one time alignment $79.99.
    Not sure what computer they use to reset the steering and doubt they used a Nissan Consult II. There must me a cheaper option? (Maybe pepboys or kwik kar)

    • @somecarstuff7285
      @somecarstuff7285  9 лет назад

      Sorry to hear about that. Basically, anytime the sensor and the steering wheel do not agree on the angle, the problem arises. For example, the problem will arise if your steering wheel is at 1 o'clock and your sensor thinks you're at 12 o'clock.
      For you, I think that's what happened. I've read that a guy fixed his by simply redoing the whole thing with the steering wheel straight from start to finish. I am not sure if that would work for everyone but worth a try, though.
      There is a guy who commented here who used software called Nissan Datascan II to reset it himself.

    Hey bud. My nissa murano airbag lights is on I try reset them many times it would not reset and my stereo steering volume control won't work the down button and the tuner control won't work. You think maybe my clock spring to is bad is that possible!! Thanks hope to hear from you!!

    • @somecarstuff7285

      The symptoms you listed does make it sound like the clock spring. Try turning the steering wheel and seeing if the down volume or tuner controls work. If either of them work when the wheel is turned, then it is definitely the clock spring. Good luck!

      So if all I want to do is replace the controls and not anything with the lights I don't need to go forth pass step 2? Cause that's all I need to do is just swap out old control with new same wires same everything. I don't need to disconnect airbag right?

    Hi, i dont kno if i have the same problem, my airbag light is flashing. I got it scanned at infiniti for free and they said its the code B1049 something to do with the spinal cable.
    Recently, i notice the led lights on the steering wheel where the cruise and volume controls are stopped working. But when i turn the wheel not in the center position, it comes back on. Any ideas?

    • @somecarstuff7285
      @somecarstuff7285  10 лет назад

      vk45dett
      ahh, yes, correct. It was just my horn and audio controls. Any time you turn your steering wheel and then something works on your steering wheel, you have a bad clock spring/spiral cable. The air bag also goes through the clock spring.

    how did you make sure that the clock spring was in the neutral position when you installed it. mine came with tape on it which prevented it from turning which i now assume was done to keep it in the neutral position, but i removed the tape and now i dont want to risk breaking the new clock spring

    • @somecarstuff7285
      @somecarstuff7285  9 лет назад +2

      Yes, new ones come with something to keep it in neutral which you have to remove before installing.
      What you need to do is go all the way to one end and then turn it TWO AND A HALF turns to make it neutral. You should confirm this first by going all the way from one end to the other end and you should count to 5 full turns. So half of 5 is 2.5. Be careful not to use too much force going end to end.
      I just tested it on my old clock spring and I got a little more than 5 full turns... like 5.2 turns. So just count to 2.5 and tape it there. When you install, make it fit with the least amount of movement possible.

      somecarstuff i did this and the vdc and slip lights still came on..do i have to take out the clock spring completely or can i just turn it while it is still installed?

    • @somecarstuff7285
      @somecarstuff7285  9 лет назад

      yungfresh2def24
      It doesn't matter. Just make sure it's neutral when you put the steering wheel on. Also, make sure your wheels are pointed straight forward as well.
      VDC and SLIP lights? Was that the reason you changed the clock spring? Some people in the comments area here said they needed to reset their steering angle sensor after changing their clock spring, but I don't know how to do that. And I didn't have to do that.
      The most obvious thing that causes those lights to come on is low brake fluid or really worn brake pads. After that, I'd recommend getting the OBD2 code. Or search the internet. Good luck!

    • @yungfresh2def24
      @yungfresh2def24 9 лет назад

      yungfresh2def24 i think i know what happened..instead of leaving the steering angle sensor plugged in like you did in the video i disconnected it. tip to anyone who is thinking about replacing their clock spring.. DO NOT remove the white plug..now i have to get my car towed to the stealership so they can reset my steering angle sensor (can't drive it because the wheels lock up)
