    6 lb baseweight in New Mexico
    looks like the snowpack is low enough that I won't need an ice axe and microspikes by the time I reach Colorado
    7 lb baseweight once I pick up bear spray and an ursack in Wyoming

    I am now on the CDT about 160 miles so far, just about to leave Silver City. The first video on trail will come out on May 24th.
    I also have some other shorter gear videos coming out this week.

    Waldo, you stud! I had no idea you had a RUclips channel, Thunderbird here, we met on the AZT at a water source between Oracle and Kearny. I cant wait to follow your progress on the CDT. Good luck brother, you will smash it!

      Hey mate! It was great to meet you on trail, I'll definitely be checking out your videos too! Love me a bit of good old fashioned English wild camping.

    Always great to see fellows that are more minimal and close to a SUL BW. Have fun in the CDT. ;)

    Great video, hope you had a blast!! I'm wondering if its a better idea to just take a tent. Because in your setup with the addition of the bug net, the weight comes up to about the weight of the zpacks plex solo, which is easier to set up. You would have to carry one trekking pole to get the exact hight requirement of the tent, but a trekking pole should benefit your joints if used correctly. Its nice uphill and especially protects your knees when going downhill. Plus one more contact point in water crossings.

      Very true. Main difference is price, those tents are expensive. I still chose an expensive tarp though... However, I actually enjoy the challenge of finding different ways to pitch the tarp using my natural environment with bushes and trees. Also I frequently do hikes where I either only bring the tarp and no bug net if it might rain but bugs are unlikely or the opposite when it almost certainly won't rain and bugs are likely.

    Hey Waldo, Marmalade here (PCT class of 2019). Thanks to some of your inspiration in your CDT thru hiking videos I am going to try tarp camping on trail. Just ordered the Sea to Summit Nano bug tent and will most likely order my tarp from Zpacks. I am having a hard time finding out how long my different tie outs are on the tarps. Can you enlighten me how long yours is and did you carry any extra guy line for different configurations? Cheers

    I'm new to your channel and I know you are hiking the CDT now. I see you don't appear, based on your Lighterpack to carry a cup or pot nor a soaking container. Is that correct and if so what kinds of things do you eat?

    Hey, thanks for the video. Quick question, how did the vivobarefoot shoes hold up? I'm going to be doing some hiking in the desert and trying to find a good minimalist/barefoot shoe.

    My pct companion had an ursack and while in Portland, a crazy person thought it was evil, grabbed it and started jumping on it. In true thru hiker form, she pushed him away and grabbed it. Don't get between a thru hiker and their food! :D Wondering how the cnoc worked out. I've had their threading fail rather catastrophically or created major inconveniences with two different products.

    Great video, curious how you set your bug net with your tarp, I've always used tents but I'm curious to try tarp and bugnet or bug bivy to bring down weight, did you find it a easy transition for you?

    • @WaldoTheBareNecessities
      @WaldoTheBareNecessities  2 года назад +1

      I've only used the bug net a couple times so far but it works well. Can stake the four corners and tie the top bit to the main opening on the tarp. I show it in a couple of the future CDT videos, first time is day 27 at the end of the video, still a few days until that video comes out.

    I really think Jupe deserved a mention at the outset of the video. I realise you acknowledged the influence in the comments but it feels different. Sure you've got lots of experience and tried your own things too, I often revert to his ideas, they're very well thought. Just an idea for next time, don't mean this to discourage you, keep it up.

    Holy Christ on the crapper, I'll never understand how a human being could sleep on a 1/8" thinlight pad. I can't even sleep on a z-lite. It just has to be a thick inflatable. I guess I'll never be ulltra-ultralight.

    Instead of changing shoes you might try water proof sock. They work well at keep feet warm and dry.

    • @WaldoTheBareNecessities
      @WaldoTheBareNecessities  2 года назад

      I've considered that but I wonder if my feet would get quite sweaty. So far it seems like the snowpack in Colorado will be low and I'll be fine.

    Looks like the same set up as Jupiter nice. Whatever works.

    • @WaldoTheBareNecessities
      @WaldoTheBareNecessities  2 года назад +3

      Haha yes, ridiculously similar. I should really give credit to Jupiter, I tried a lot of different gear items and just kept finding that his choices worked really well for me too. No need to reinvent the wheel I guess. Main differences are the bug netting, rain jacket choice, garmin inreach, wind pants, puffy jacket, camera, and filter. I think those are all different from him maybe. Also will be interesting to use this gear on the CDT which he hasn't done, Colorado for example might be challenging with a tarp.

    My apologies but I must interject with some clarification. Bear bags should be hung out of reach and remote from your sleeping areas. Kevlar protection is maybe good for slowing down mice, it's not so a bear can't get inside. A Important fearure of a food bag is the ability to contain smells as used food packaging (trash) should also be stored in this container. Never camp with your food bag in close proximity, hanging it remotely will help minimize encounters.

      Agreed, I've seen other vids where bear put several tooth punctures in kev....and crushed the contents beyond recognition!

    hate to be that guy but it seems like some of your weights are off, lighter base weight than jupiter with more gear plus a torrid at 6.8oz ? and an EE enigma 20 at 15 oz ?? even a small in the torid and a short slim EE quilt both weigh multiple ounces more. Dont mean to be an asshole or anything its just kind of hard to take inspiration from it when I look and the gear is all represented with wrong weights

    • @WaldoTheBareNecessities
      @WaldoTheBareNecessities  2 года назад +3

      Hey thanks for the comment, actually really appreciate you pointing this out. It's a mistake. Basically I recently made a copy of my CDT list to mess around with and see if I can get it lighter. Instead of making new items I was editing the original items so it changed them on the CDT list and not just the copy I was messing with. I'll fix it when I get to town tomorrow.
      I changed the quilt to a 30F (you can see it says 30), with 950 fill and 7D material the enigma is 15oz. But the gear list shouldn't show that. I need to change it back to the 20F quilt which weighs 20oz.
      The torrid jacket is a strange one... I have weighed it and it's 6.8oz. It's a small in 7D and I think it's advertised as 7 or 7.5oz. Need to check. I cut some tags off etc and weighed it at 6.8oz. I bought it a while ago and they have made some changes to the torrid, I think they added an adjustable cordage to the bottom of it around the waist. Not sure if they increased the weight actually. Maybe I should reweigh mine to double check, but no way it's more than 1oz off.
      Let me know if you think anything else is off. Originally that gear list said something like 6.3 lb I think. But like I said I've messed it up by editing items. I'll fix it and it is definitely over 6lb. I also bought a melanzana hoodie recently so need to add that too.
      Thanks for pointing this out, I had no idea I had messed it up. Also a lot of my gear choices are informed by Jupiter as you can tell. I think his baseweight without camera gear is lower than mine.

      @@WaldoTheBareNecessities Like i said I hate sounding like a stickler because no matter what, rocking basically no extra camp clothes and sleeping on the 1/8in pad is crazy enough for me to respect it, cool to hear about the torrid since the weight had been the only thing throwing me off about them.
      Hope CDT is doing you well and kickin your ass its a narly trail.
