For the weight of your water purification, you could just add chili, onion powder, cacao, and coffee. And a drop of cooking oil, to the water. Shake. Wait a half hour. Drink. Nothing would survive that. You already need nutrition. Many water sources are super pretty clean and need no filter or treatment anyhow. Your toothbrush can clean the bottle cap every few days.

Thanks for stopping to talk to me on the trail south of Bucks Lake, it was so nice of you. You inspired me to get my base weight down to 10 pounds for my last couple of trips. I like a thicker pad to sleep on, if only I could sleep on my back instead of my side. I was glad to have a Zpack tent with those mosquitos, though a tarp looks great for other times. I was so surprised to see you since it had been such a short time after you started, you must be done by early Aug at that pace. I just did the first section in Washington, I hope the mosquitos weren't as bad for you.

Some people critisizing he gear for lack of "just in case" stuff may not be considering that the PCT has a spur to a town every 3 days or so, on average. In some ways its just tons of little hikes and resupply. If his hoody isnt enough when he gets toward yosemite, he can obtain a layer, and dump it a week later at resupply. Its such a long trail people replace gear all along it, new shoes, new shelter etc.

Hey Jupiter, curious to know why you’re swapping the Sawyer for the drops? Seems like you’ve relied on the squeeze in nearly every gear video that you’ve showed? Thanks! Excited to see your journey!

my guess is it has something to do with the weight. i suppose it could also be less prone to damage? what i want to know is how many of those flosser tools he takes on him!

I love the aquramira because it's easy to use. it's passive, and it can't break. you actually have to use the Sawyer, and it might break.

    • @smileyjoe
      @smileyjoe 2 года назад +1

@@jacksonschroederproductions Yeah, I'm starting to see the advantage of this. It's not like using a Sawyer is all that hard, especially if you hang it up, but any little bit I can avoid crouching over or moving water bags around, that's to the better. In addition, with water drops there's less items to carry overall. For example, no replacement o-rings or plunger caps. You could also just fill your bottles, put drops in, throw em in your pack, and get back to the trail. Whereas with the Sawyer, you have to stop at the water source and take the time.

Sawyer's are terrible and seen them take so many people off trail. If they are exposed to freezing temperatures at night than they are rendered useless.

@@Ryan-yi5ro I love this realization. I'm ditching mine for the drops for sure now. I'll probably still bring a water bladder though. I like to hang it in the trees and wash my hands with the cnoc clean hands valve.

I am so curious about the shelter setup. I see in the comments folks are pretty up in arms about it, but I'm curious because it appeals to me AND I have doubts. I can sleep on a hardwood floor without a pillow, and in fact really enjoy firm sleeping, so I'd probably do alright with the foam pad. I love the idea of the minimalist tarp instead of an enclosed tent. I'd probably do a tyvek sheet instead. But my real question: what about bugs? I live in Georgia where bugs (namely, ants & mosquitoes) are abundant so trying to imagine sleeping basically exposed is difficult. I've considered a tarp/bivvy setup, so at least I'd have a net between myself and the critters, but you're just going with a quilt. You've been through GA and other buggy places this way - can you speak to how this goes for you, especially in relation to bug bites? I'm also curious if condensation inside the tarp is ever an issue.

Not many bugs in the Sierra. It's desert, really. Mosquitoes are a big deal in Washington though.

Very optimistic . a much needed attitude when attempting that hike .
i encountered a few people doing the whole thing while on a short two hour walk at the mt Shasta entrance . I said hello as they walked by with their massive packs on and they responded with a low barely audible
" ugh " . almost like an animal growl. 😂
The other encounter was where the trail intersects Florence lake , i went with the owner of the store there in a boat to pick two guys up . they got into the small boat with their heads hanging down . we got back to the store and they immediately bought some cokes and candy bars which disappeared in mere seconds . hilarious , but convinced me to never attempt such a hike. 😂

I bought my first sleeping pad when I turned 29. I’d hiked countless miles and camped countless nights on the ground alone. No fng clue what I was thinking or why I waited so long lol.

I would definitely be bringing a mask just to mitigate wildfire smoke. In fact I will be on the TRT in 6 weeks! Hiking with and sweating into it might not be great though, but I've learned too much about what particulates do to you to just put up with it!

Every time I watch one of your gear video's I think I should try the tarp set up to some time. And still mind blown that you sleep on the 1/8 foam pad 😅. I hope you have a great time out there and don't get any injuries

Thanks for the gear update. Do you every worry or have experienced an animal curling up with you at night using just a tarp? I switch back and forth between a tarp and a tent and it’s always in the back of my mind when I’m under the tarp.
