I forgot to mention in the video, but we both will have bear spray (which is included in the base weight talked about) this is grizzly country after all 🙂
You also forgot to mention your tent. Found out through a link to purchase one from your site. Thanks I'm a hammock camper, but I'd definitely have a Duplex if I was a ground dweller.
@MYB3ST1 I never camp above tree line. I day hike above tree line and head back down to camp. If that means I can't do a few trails then sobeit. There are literally a million other trails I can backpack. It has never caused me pause before.
I think it's likely that "packing your fears" will be more like "preparing adequately for a ton of mosquitoes and cold rain" by the end. I started the GDT without rain pants because I never felt the need on the triple crown, but I bought a pair before I finished. On a more upbeat note, I recommend taking as many of the high route alternates as you can; they're typically amazing. Happy trails!
The insects buzzing the camera made me really feel like I was there with you! Beautiful place for a video, and thanks for sharing your gear! Good luck on the trail and I look forward to some form of trip report!
So jealous of the thru hiker lifestyle. Not sure I’ll ever get the time. Still been my UL inspiration to get under 7lbs. Finally done it. Thanks Jupiter. Be safe and enjoy yourself.
I’m so excited to watch you two on this trail! As I age it gets more and more difficult to backpack. Even with light gear. Sending you hope and peace and only bear sightings!
While bears don’t often compromise ursacks (example photos online) they will, with some frequency, paw, chew, and maul them until their contents are inedible for humans. Just something to consider when considering contingencies.
Well said. After much consideration I have decided they are a flawed tool - though a marketing success. I took a bear can on the GDT and was happy with the higher level of food safety.
@@PaulSchortemeyer I splurged for a bearikade and haven’t looked back. Dead simple, peace of mind, works in all environments. Plus I look like a tech bro.
Good to see somebody calling out the "hang your food" thing. Multiple trips in Canada/US bear country convinced me that it is almost impossible to do this adequately, except at low elevation outfitter camps.
Can’t wait for the videos!! I did the Brazeau loop last year which shares a small section of the GDT and it was amazing! When you get to Jonas Shoulder, take it all in! If you can capture some footage from there I’d love to relive it! The view of the whole Rockies is just astounding!
I’m relieved you took a good rain jacket. I hope you had some warm sleep clothes too. The last section was really wet. I wore rain pants almost every day and was so happy to have them. I hope you guys had a wonderful hike. I really look forward to hearing about your journey :)
Takes a lot of courage to disclose a 3L rain jacket, but it'll be worth it. I've settled on the Zpacks DCF rain kilt for rainy hikes. Keeps my shorts dry, doesn't compromise breathability, is great when thrashing through wet willows on cold mornings, and is much lighter than rain pants.
Even with your personal relationship, I didn't think you could get Palante to do anything custom anymore, like put the Joey harness on a Desert pack! good job😉
This is her second iteration. It's a lot of looking at what she liked about other packs, thinking about what she wants that others don't have, and researching on Reddit fabrics and such. Came out great! And can't wait to see future iterations
@@JupiterHikes the one I’m working on is going to be hopefully a combination of kinda a palante pack because I like the. Shoulder pockets and bottom pocket but a little larger and I want to angle my side pockets more so I can reach my water bottles like with the rei 55. I got so frustrated trying to find the one pack to rule them all so I decided to make my own!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on how that running vest harness carries the weight. Does it feel more centered than on the other Pa’lante packs and keep from tilting back as much?
Rough filming spot but I figured better to film it than to not at all 🤷 though I'll be happy that I don't often have to deal with bugs like that while recording something
What kind of tent are you guys using? Also are you using a wide or standard width sleeping pad? I I’m a gear nerd so I’m always curious. Gave you a sub too! Going to check out your older stuff and look forward to new.
this will be great to watch ! it's also realy great to see duo hiking and what changes that brings compared with solo, I know it's not the first time you guys are doing that but it still looks brave to me ! this cap brand seems interesting, I'll definietly check this out. Would you say that this is the kind of gear list you would take for a trip in european alps ? I think it's tipically colder and more rainy than PCT or stuff like that but I may be wrong and it would be nice for me to compare ! have fun on that trail and thanks for the video
How do you keep the phone, the watch, lights, and the camera charged on trail? The watch only lasts about 38 hours while using GPS, which is required to obtain the data for the info you mentioned… Does that 20K brick last more than a few charges of all those electronics? I’m about to do a thru of the MST next week. Should be about a two-month saunter. It appears that 6 days will be the most without access to juice. Doesn’t the charging process distract from the hike?
Speaking of fears ... I didn't see it mentioned. Are you carrying a SAR locator device? I love seeing your adventures, and want you to be safe I can see you continue for many years.
We tried cooking on a couple shakedown hikes and just didn't care for it. Also cold soaking is much better for grizzly considerations as it's so much simpler
what about food? i think this not being talked about enough in the "hiking with light weight" community. it's an integral part on multiple day/weeks hikes.
Thx for that video ! just one advice : take care and listen carefully your GF, otherwise you will have to sleep outside of the tent, with no quilt ! :p
Great video. I'm just curious to know why you are using a tent instead of a tarp? You came to my attention in the past because you were such a proponent of using a tarp and going as light as possible.
I know, rough spot to film, but figured maybe it's better than nothing. I want to do a post hike 'what changed' 'what worked' video and kinda is helpful to have the pre trail list public to do that.
Always love vids, ur character, presentation, trail style n backing-but isnt this getting a bit boring showing the same gear that has been shown again and again and again in ur vids and hundreds of other peeps vids.
