  • This video was a Patreon request that came through quite a while back but I have been so busy trying to get every request done that it just has taken me a while to get to it. I am completely new to Dire Straits, I know absolutely nothing about them. I was requested that I listen to Sultans Of Swing Alchemy Live instead of the studio version as it's longer. This was an excited video to film and I think one of the longest ones on the channel.
Here is my first reaction to Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing. I hope you enjoy it!
If you'd like to check out my Spotify playlist and see what I've been listening to recently, here it is:

At the time they were so busy touring, creating this level of awesome was like their day job. Dire Straits had 3 giant stages and 3 full stage teams. They were in constant use. As they were performing on one stage, the previous one was being dismantled while the next one was being built - that gives an idea of how packed their schedule was. This would have just been another great night for them, and only when they look back later would they be able to appreciate what they were doing at the time.

    That was a great reaction!
    My dire straight story.
It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 p.m. . A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won two tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's "Brothers In Arms" tour show (1986) at the Boston garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no, he looks at me and says would you want to go? I responded in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day. We picked up the tickets at the door. I couldn't believe it They were 6th row center on the floor. I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. His fingers fly, no pick... Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second encore song. It was really a very well done show. I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it!

Ha! I have a similar story. I was at college in Boston. I had two tickets to see them at the Orpheum Theater (one of their last small shows, as "Money for Nothing" was exploding at the time.) The person I was going to go with couldn't make it, so I ran around my dorm floor yelling "Who wants to go see Dire Straits?" My first volunteer was the hottest girl on the floor. Nothing ever happened between us (apart from a life-long friendship), but I bet a bunch of guys at the show were thinking "What's SHE doing with that ugly bastard?" When they came back around to Boston, they did the show you saw.

Feb, 1979. I'm 19, my first time away from home in Houston, Tx. Totally lost, stoned out of my gourd on the best weed I've ever smoked (and I've smoked the best), getting a bit nervous because I'm lost, and I hear the studio version of this song on the car stereo for the first time. Fuck it! I'm jamming, I don't care, I was listening to something really really special! I don't even remember how I got back to where we were staying to be honest.
This is what your Grandpa was rockin' to when he was your age and this live version is better than the studio version. Perfection? By the look on your face..... I think so! Hi, this is the first reaction of yours that I've watched. I'm 54 and I've been a huge DS fan since I was 15. Alchemy Live was my first vinyl. They were born in 1977 in the suburbs of London when Mark Knopfler (the singer) moved from Newcastle to his brother's house, which he shared with John Illsley (the bassist). DS was born there. In this live show, recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1983, Hal Lindes plays on rhythm guitar, replacing Mark's brother David Knopfler in the original line-up, who left the band in 1980 due to musical differences, Alan Clark on keyboards and piano and Terry Williams on drums, here in his first experience with the DS having replaced the original drummer that year. It is above all thanks to his influence that the live performance has a very different rhythm compared to the original recording. He rewrote some great drum parts. The performance is incredible. Just think about the fact that at the time there were no sequences, bases, clicks... everything played completely live.
I found your reactions very pleasant... if you want to continue getting to know DS a little, I recommend some excerpts from their live show "On the night - Live" (which I witnessed in person in 1993). In particular the songs "Calling Elvis", "On every street", "Your latest trick", "Romeo & Juliet". And then again from Alchemy Live in 1983 "Once upon a time in the west" and "Love over gold". And finally their most poignant song "brothers in arms". Sorry for going on, but when it comes to DS... enjoy listening.

Alchemy Live was recorded over two nights at the Hammersmith Odeon in London and was the culmination to the "Love Over Gold" world tour. In the end, only the footage of the Saturday night concert was used for the DVD and album release, recorded on 23rd July 1983. For the music lover, the whole DVD is an absolute must!
Although formed in London, Dire Straits are inextricably connected to Mark's home city of Newcastle Upon Tyne. The tune "Going Home" is played before every Newcastle United home fixture.
The band had gone through a few line-up changes by the time of this concert. But, at this time, consisted of:
    Mark Knopfler - guitar, vocals
    John Illsley - bass
    Alan Clark - keyboards
    Hal Lindes - guitar
    Terry Williams - drums.
