- Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughan has been long overdue. I made sure to go live at El Mocambo for this one. Before this reaction I had never heard anything from this guy. I didn't even know he existed. To say he is an animal on the guitar would be an understatement. I think we'll be looking at more Stevie Ray Vaughan in the future...

This was recorded shortly after his debut album was released. This is the title track. He had played all the guitar solos on Dsvid Bowie's album Let's Dance previously.
This is blues. This is 1983. Just when you think he can't get better, he spins around. The solos were too easy previously. LOL And he sings like that. He mainly plays with a pick, but can also finger pick.
Also check Life Without You. SRV plays behind his back and teeth. He pauses playing for a moment to say a special message.

When people of my generation say today's music sucks, it's because we're comparing it to what we had, this. And by comparison, yes, it does suck.
To be fair, this was the age of synth and there was a lot out there that sucked at the time as well. I was there, Gandalf, 3000 years ago...
Everything people really want to be done in terms of music has been done already, I can't really blame today's artists too much.

This is a good example why older people don't understand hip hop. We grew with musicians playing instruments to make music. No sampling here. SRV is the man!
I'm an older person and I don't like a ton of hip hop. However, some of it is really good IF you like lyrics...not songs about bitches and HOs

Agree, I see people try but their left hands are too weak and need alot of pedals to get this sound where Stevie needed 1 overdrive and that's all.
Many people consider this the greatest live blues performance in history, but his brother Jimmy had the best line to put SRV in perspective: it was just another night for him. He brought this level of energy every single time. Truly one of a kind.. 🐐🐐🐐

Sadly Stevie was killed in a helicopter crash in August 1990. There has never been a greater guitarist than him. He was self taught because he loved music, especially the blues. The guitar in his hands becomes an extension of him and his soul. He is still greatly loved and missed.
I cried like a baby while my girlfriend held me when I heard he died. There will never be another SRV.
I was driving to class and pulled over when announced on radio and my friend had to take me home, she just saw him at texas jam. I couldn't go and couldn't believe it, gave up his seat and was killed tragically.

As much as I love Page, Hendrix, Beck, Clapton, Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani, Blackmore etc. Stevie Ray Vaughan is my favorite and is/was in a class all by himself. RIP SRV 🎸

Sometimes I wonder if their scattered brains can handle it! We lived through the Golden Age of music!
I’ll never forget… we were on vacation in San Antonio Texas and was walking through the hotel parking garage. Stevie Ray and his entourage walked by and stopped to ask if we were enjoying our visit in the city. Spent about 10 minutes talking with us. Super nice guy, he was a very genuine person. Not to mention the best guitarist EVER. It was just a few weeks later when he and other members of the band died in that fateful helicopter crash. Definitely a sad day for music.
I'm so looking forward to this reaction. A little FYI- Stevie played with the thickest and heaviest strings you could play on and they were lifted higher than most strings on the fret board so that he could get the sound he wanted. He'd rip the skin off of his fingertips from playing and he'd SUPER GLUE them back on and keep playing. He was a little guy (5'5' or 5"6 ish) but LOOK AT HIS HANDS! After his death, #1(the guitar in this video and the only thing that survived the plane crash that killed him- CORRECTION helicopter crash, thanks @howiewarren243) was displayed in a case I believe at a Hard Rock Cafe, and I did read somewhere that LEGEND guitarists couldn't even play his instrument. They (his hands) were massive and also contributed to his ability to literally wrap his hands around the neck of the guitar ALSO- Another great who could not read music and was self taught. Now, if you want to hear another great one from Stevie, look up "Little Wing" from the same concert (el Mocambo) and then find "Life without You" at the Capital Theatre in 1985 (where he loses a tooth and keeps playing),and if you have some time watch his concert at the Montrose. Blues was becoming a "dying" genre and Stevie pulled it back into its rightful relevance. I could go on and on! Amazing amazing artist!
Was a Helicopter crash at Alpine Valley Wisconsin My Girlfriend from High School was at the show .Terrible loss Should have never taken off in that fog.
Because of Stevie Ray Vaughan when I was a kid I used to put super glue on the tips of my fingers when I first started playing guitar it actually helps you develop calluses pretty quickly

I have the tech sheet on SRV's #1 guitar and yeah, most people would find it completely unplayable. Dude used bridge cables for strings
Stevie came and sat in with me during my radio show in Dallas. He lived right down the street from downtown. One of the first things I said to him was what big fingers he had for a guitarist.
The music world lost a true great in 1990. RIP Stevie Ray. There will never be another player as skilled.

I’m from Texas and so is Stevie Ray. He loved to play so much that the callus on his finger tips would come off and he would super glue them back on so he could keep playing. He felt ever note he played and wanted everyone else to feel it too! So Talented

Stevie Ray may not have sounded like he did without Double Trouble. I loved it when they brought Reese Wynan in on keyboard. Even Stevie said the same thing about Double Trouble, they are the backbone and force that feeds the drive behind him.

I saw SRV live in Hawaii 1986 while in the military and as it was a daytime show I still have photos of this amazing show. Love to see the young blokes give him props...
SRV was a gift from God! I was driving my VW bug when I heard he passed away. He was needed in Heaven to jam with Hendrix and all the other greats.

This concert was 1983, but Stevie's influences were 50's, 60's and 70s. He took traditional blues, added fire, magic and insane passion and elevated it to what you see here. I was lucky enough to see him live once before he passed.

I was kinda of being tongue in cheek (I’ve played guitar since I was 7 I’m 44 this year) to me as a guitarist that moment was absolutely incredible, more so than ANYTHING I’ve ever seen from EVH or really ANY “revered” guitarist. Anyone who plays guitar knows the point I’m making. You break a string “you’re done” until it gets fixed. Vaughn literally didn’t even break a sweat & kept playing on other strings until his tech brought him a new guitar. Absolutely un-matched & absolutely incredible.
Congrats young man, you've just been introduced to the greatest Blues Guitarist in history and overall considered in the high ranks of all electric guitarist that ever lived. SRV. You will never look at other guitar players the same ever again. What you heard and saw can not be unseen. There are players and then there are Masters. One is one in 2 million maybe, then there is SRV and he was one is maybe 2 billion that could do what he did. Think I am exaggerating? Do the research and what other guitarist say about him. Stevie Ray Vaughn was my FIRST concert. 15 years old and completely blown away. I remember exactly where I was when the radio announced that he had died. No one like him. Native Texan here BTW... he used really heavy strings and high action which helped his sound. Guitarist would pick up his guitar and then set it right back down. This is 1982.
never got to go to a show ; but accidentally discovered him when i was 13 when his '89 Austin City Limits show aired, and it completely changed my life in that moment.
just like i'll never forget watching MTV News a year later, seeing them announce the crash and his passing. i think i still haven't fully recovered from that.

I remember the night that helicopter went down. Bawled my eyes out. And for a brief few minutes they thought Eric Clapton was on it with him. Talk about heartbreak.
When electric guitars sleep, they have nightmares about SRV. I had the privilege to see him live many years ago, unbelievable. To get that tone he used strings that were incredibly thick. He would use super glue to glue torn callouses back on his fingertips so he could continue playing. The BEST there ever was.
This was July 1983 at the El Mocambo in Toronto this entire show was mind blowing. I was lucky enough to have seen him live 3 times until his passing in 1990

Yessir! Sorry for the long comment, this just got me hyped! (This was 1982 by the way, a few months before he was discovered by the world). You've officially been baptized by the greatest to ever do it. He is improvising - all feel and soul - most of the entire song - he has his go-to licks and structure and moves but his soul get's locked in and he just leaves normal earth behind and travels and brings us along (one of the cool things about getting into the blues...it will help your guitar playing to learn the blues as it is the source of all music, and once you have some comfort, you can improvise forever.). Welcome to a new world as there are dozens of videos of SRV and he NEVER disappoints. ALWAYS DO HIM LIVE!!! Most people check "Voodoo Child" next, any version will do, and to really hear his vocals "Life Without You - Live at Capital Theater" - "Mary Had a Little Lamb - live from Austin" and EVERY SINGLE song from this concert, SRV Live from El Mocambo (check out "Lenny" from the same concert to have instant brain explosion). He is the Baddest MF to ever go out and demolish the guitar and electric blues on stage. While he can be so gentle, precise, and take you through the clouds with the angels bending around soft corners, he also rips and tears into it like he is possessed with something, mean, beautiful and spiritual all at the same time. He was on fire that night - every night - but it is a gift to guitar players and music lovers that people were on hand to record this night, from which this version of "Texas Flood" is from. He never played the same song the same way twice, so you can watch a different "Texas Flood" live and he'll do the same basic structure, some of the main licks and such, but every time out he let his soul drift into some magical place and he gave it all back, and it'll be a totally different outcome. He eventually gave us his life (RIP Stevie it still hurts) in a freak helicopter crash in 1990, 7 years of the spotlight, and IMO - and its cool for anyone to love whoever, Van Halen, Jimmy Page, of course Jimi Hendrix -and many many more - the most, it isn't about wrong or right, it is personal and whoever hits you or touches your soul is your GOAT - but for me and multiple generations since, it all begins and ends with Stevie. The blues are an incredible rabbit hole to go down which stretches you back to insane players like Robert Johnson in the 1930's, with cheap beat-up acoustic and nothing else, playing for whiskey and a bed that night in the old deep American south (Mississippi Delta blues is THE SOURCE) to BB King in the 60's and a zillion other amazing players. Stevie's beat up 1962 Fender Stratocaster you just watched is arguably the most valuable guitar on planet earth (if you go back and watch or on future vids, he just uses one pedal, and a Wah pedal, but he is constantly adjusting his pickups and tone knobs mid song in a purely subconscious master wizard level, to get that perfect tone (his tone is just as epic as his playing). He called this guitar 'Number 1' and it is the sickest guitar hands down, to me at least. SRV went through a battle of life to arrive at the man you just witnessed and his guitar fits the part. Enjoyed many of your vids over last couple years, glad you got to this one, it is a game changer.

SRV was the pinnacle of blues guitar playing at that time and has earned his place in the top teir of guitar players of all time... he was definitely on of many GOATs on the guitat!!!
Had the pleasure of seeing SRV in Germany in a place the size of a high-school gym. I was blown away. THE GREATEST in my lifetime. And to think he questioned himself on his voice. RIP brother

Saw him in concert in 89 with Jeff Beck. Best concert I ever saw. A year later he was gone.
Jeff is another GOAT level players to check out. And his live concerts are actually nicely available on high quality. Super shame that SRV live recordings are crappy quality (in PQ & AQ)

When Stevie died,I saw it on the news,I was staying at a backpackers in Christchurch NZ,I had one joint left .As soon as I heard I went out on the fire escape and had a puff for the legend.RIP YOU GOOD THING.RESPECT.
Thank you for getting to this one, I could not have clicked on it fast enough!! I turned 14 years old on the very day he performed this incredible performance 7/11/1983. Been a fan since the eighties and even saw him twice!! I could literally suggest all sorts of songs and performances of his. His studio recorded stuff is great no question but his genius was performing live. He never played the same song the same way twice so you could literally watch him play the same song countless times and see and hear a different version everytime!
FACTS! This reminds me of Neal Peart, I heard he never played the same each time he hit those drums.
It's so fun to watch you kids experience real music and talent and genius for the first time! I saw SRV live twice in my younger days and no other musician has even come close to comparing to his unique, raw talent. I cried on the day he died and I still mourn the loss of his pure guitar genius. Godspeed Stevie Ray ❤🎸
I've been watching reaction videos to every genre for maybe 5 or 6 years now, SRV was and still is my favorite rabbit hole. Highly recommend one of the three: Life Without You (live @ the Capitol Theatre), Lenny (Live @ the El Mocambo), or Little Wing (also live @ the El Mocambo). Some of the most intense & emotional performances I've ever seen, regardless of artist. Absolutely breaks my fucking heart that he died the way he did, especially after getting sober. Seems to happen with all the legends.
We cannot forget the "sound check" video! OMG!!
Seeing him live, up close and personal was beyond amazing. I couldn't have been more blown away if he had sprouted wings and flew around the auditorium.
Stevie Ray was from Dallas, Tx namely Oak Cliff (Thars My Hood) area. But he was a national treasure and gone at too early of an age and robbed us of more musical treasures like this.

Along with all the fantastic and informative comments here, I'd like you to check out another one of his called "Tin Pan Alley" live, with Stevie and Blues Legend Johnny Copeland...a phenomenal tribute to the respect Stevie not only had for them, but how they were actually humble towards him out of respect for his abilities and kindness. I've seen SRV 6 times. And I've seen all the greatest Blues players over my 68 years on this planet. And I can say without a doubt he is the very best of all time. From "Look at Little Sister" to his bluesy version of the "Mary had a little lamb" to "Cold Shot" to "Caught in the Crossfire" & a slow instrumental "Riviera Paradise" you can see his diversity running thru his veins powered by his soul. GOAT. Great reaction video.

SRV was and still is the greatest guitarist ever. Born and raised here in Dallas, Texas, SRV was our own and we take great pride and in claiming him as ours. Have missed him everyday since that horrible day in 1990 when SRV was tragically killed in a helicopter crash in Wisconsin. . SRV started playing the guitar when he was around 7 years old and around the age of 12 years old, he walked up to a stage where Blues Legend Albert King was playing and asked, can I play with you, which no one ever did that. SRV created his own genre, Texas Blues, which is more in your face, nasty, note bending, aggressive playing unlike the regular blues aka Chicago blues where you play a note and then sing a little for a bar or 2 then play another couple of notes...One side note...Hendrix was the innovator...SRV is the Master...One last side note...SRV played by ear only. Could not read music...SRV played size 12 strings, which are basically bass guitar strings. A normal guitar has size 6 strings. He truly was a God send from God Himself. Closest thing to SRV...Kenny Wayne Shepherd. If you ever wanna talk SRV, im here. I'll talk SRV 24 - 7 with y'all
