In the UK we don’t learn about American Literature at school, at least I didn’t anyway. That would be why I asked ‘Who is Tom Sawyer’. Not because I’m stupid, failed by my parents or any other reason 🤣

And Tom Sawyer was a character created by the American Writer, Mark Twain. Good reading now banned in most schools because it was written at a time when the N word was used.

That's definitely the hyperbolic meme. As well as "your favorite drummer's favorite drummer".
Then there's Buddy Rich, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Tony Thompson, Jeff Porcarp, Carl Palmer, Bill Bruford, Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, Gavin Harrison, Pat Mastelotto, Lenny White, Stuart Copeland, Alan Myers ... just off the top of my head.
They're all in the same "god-tier" class but with such vastly different styles it's ridiculous to rank them.
Oh, Terry Bozzio and Chad Wackerman too.

Tom Sawyer is the quintessential mischievous and adventurous boy created by Mark Twain. He's clever, imaginative, and known for his knack for getting into trouble. Despite his mischievous nature, he has a good heart and a strong sense of loyalty to his friends. Tom's escapades, including whitewashing a fence, exploring caves, and pretending to be a pirate, make him an iconic character in American literature.

You have just entered the catalog of arguably the greatest 3-piece rock band ever. 167 original songs on 19 studio albums across 40+ years. Geddy Lee (bass), Alex Lifeson (guitar), and Neil Peart (percussion) make up the 3 musical prodigies in Rush. Their music is unique and technical, the sound changing and adapting over the decades, and yet still undeniably Rush. Neil has written most of the thought-provoking lyrics whilst creating dynamic drum parts and composing masterful solos that play like songs of their own. You truly can't go wrong with choosing almost any song that is recommended, but I will ask for The Spirit of Radio next.
There is another band coming up right now called The Warning, who are creating new rock music that hails back to this era, which is amazing. They don't sound like Rush but seem to be following the Rush playbook for success. 3 young women from Mexico with enormous talent like Rush. Maybe you could check out their song Evolve. I had the same reaction as you did to Tom Sawyer.
I hope you'll stick with this for a bit. The Rush Army will be arriving to your channel very soon 🤘😁 Best of luck and have fun!

    This is a Canadian band
The singer bassist/keyboard synthesizer wizard is Geddy Lee we just call him Ged (hard g sound)
The drummer is The Professor of drums Mr Neil Peart (pronounced peert) who was also the mastermind of words and ideas. He provided all lyrics since he joined the band after their first two records. And last but certainly not least is Alex Lifeson the guitar master. I have watched these guys live play until I thot their hands would fall off literally. Visibly swollen. These guys gave so much to us in their lifetime of music creating it’s almost beyond words. They were my first concert at age 14 and I saw their last concert tour. They actually had fun. They were goofy as hell, intelligent, all musically gifted and generally just good dudes. They said fu to the industry when they were blacklisted by radio in the US and kept going until they were finally recognized with this particular song. In the eyes of their very loyal fans (mostly men btw) their genius is unparalleled. Rush fans are like no other.
It’s an acquired taste for many. Glad you enjoyed it. First hit was working man. That was without Neil. Try it out. It’s heavy rock n roll great riff from Alex. Great vocals from Ged. 🖖🏻
More suggestions would be YYZ , Red Barchetta, Subdivisions. My fav older tunes from the seventies include Lakeside Park, Fly By Night, Something For Nothing and the rock opera 2112. Fav 80s are Limelight, Closer To The Heart and 20th Century Man

Something that most know; even Rush fans, is the lead singer Geddy Lee plays bass, keyboard and other instruments.
You see the video switching between him playing bongos, keyboard, bass AND singing. The reason for this is because Rush put out a fee album's and videos before ever playing live shows.
Geddy admits that he had trouble playing and singing at the same time. In fact, in concert there is much recorded content because he can't play multiple instruments at the same time. He did however sling his bass around behind him and play the keyboard and others.
They were after all only a 3 piece band.
Neil Peart, the drummer only recently passed away.
When touring around the US and Canada, Neil would travel by motorcycle and not ride the tour bus...even in winter!!

    • @thomashiggins9320
      @thomashiggins9320 9 месяцев назад +7

      The relevance is this:
The character, as introduced in the novel, is very much a smart, precocious kid who constantly rebels against his much put-upon Aunt Polly and his much more conformist half-brother, Sid.
Sawyer's creative mind makes him the leader of a group of boys in his town who all run around together, pull light-hearted pranks, ditch school and constantly get into small amounts of trouble because they won't behave "properly."
The key thing to know, though, is that the novel -- ostensibly written for children -- has as its setting a town in 1840s Missouri.
In other words, the social norms with which Sawyer can never seem to conform are those of the slave-holding Antebellum South of the United States, about 15 years before the outbreak of this country's devastating Civil War.
As such, this "children's story" is rife with Twain's scathing, hilariously satirical commentary about the hypocrisy of those social norms.
So, listen to this song again and follow the lyrics while keeping in mind that literary context. 😁

I’ve watched many videos of people reacting to Tom Sawyer from Rush for the first time, and here’s another one I’m watching right now. Many people watching this video for the first time don’t seem to notice that the dude with the long black hair who’s singing between conga drums with headphones on (Sir Geddy Lee) is also the same guy on keyboards, Taurus pedals (keyboards for your feet), and bass guitar. This version is taken from the actual recording session at Le Studio in Montreal; that’s why you see Ged doing these things separately… live, he does it all practically simultaneously. These three men are the pride of Canada.
Edit: the drummer’s name is Cornelius Elwood Peart, better known as Neil Peart (last name sounds like “peert”). Neil wrote 99.9% of Rush’s lyrics and is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. RIP Professor. The guitar player’s name is Aleksandar Živojinović, better known as Alex Lifeson. His original last name is Serbian, and translates roughly to “son of life”. He has a chord named after him, the opening chord from “Hemispheres”. It’s an F sharp major with the added 4th and flat 7. Geddy Lee was born Gary Lee Weinrib; Geddy was a nickname given to him by his friends due to his mother’s thick accent. She pronounced Gary as Geddy, and it just stuck. Welcome to Rush Land, hope to see you back again soon ✌🏻

The people that told you no, don’t listen to rush are nuts! Rush is one of the very best progressive rock bands of the late 70s and early 80s they were a band that set the president for bands like tool, Alice In Chains, and a number of others. People just don’t realize how much of an impact rush actually had on music as a hole.. this band showed everyone that heard them but you don’t necessarily have to have a song that is in 4/4 and structured in a certain way. And at the time when their music was around, they’re just wasn’t too many bands that attempted things like that. Genres like jazz, fusion and others that messed with different times signatures just we’re not listened to until rush came along Rush basically brought an entire new way of thinking in to the mainstream. And Tom Sawyer is a great song to get started with this band although it is one of their most played songs. It is that way for a reason as you have just heard. Because it throws some curveballs at you that you totally don’t expect and that is the thing that rush is most known for so I am 100% on board and I don’t know if everyone else is here but this is totally a rabbit hole you should take the space elevator down into.

I have to say this….i was watching your reactions and I was all smiles. Seeing the look of dazed bewilderment on your face, trying to take it all in, figuring it all out.
Geddy Lee is the bassist, vocalist and synthesist, and yeah his voice is unique as hell.
Neil Peart is the drummer. And yeah his drumming on this song is just mind boggling. His precision, energy and complexity is just jaw dropping.
Alex Lifeson on guitars. He is known for coming up with bizarre ass chords and some truly wicked soloing.
The impression you’re left with is “how can so much sound come out of just 3 people?”
They were all serious technical masters of their craft, and they were only 27, 28 years old when they first recorded Tom Sawyer.
It was the first song off their Moving Pictures album released in early 1981, but recorded/produced in 1980. So you were really close as to WHEN this song came out.
It makes me so happy you enjoyed this. It means a lot.

Dear MollyBoyTV. This is my first time watching one of your reaction videos. I liked seeing your sense of wonder when you first heard Rush. I'm sure my face looked the same. As I look through what you've reacted to so far, I almost have to laugh, respectfully. I like seeing hip-hop fan react clips, but it looks from your history of videos, that you've been captured by another genre as your musical knowledge grows.
Like you had lived in the house of hip-hop for your entire life, then wanting to explore the world outside your house, and settling in your neighbors flat to dig in to all of their metal albums.
I think you're doing good work here. Keep it up. I'm really glad to see you may have gotten into prog rock.
I agree you need more Rush. A good transition for you here would be YYZed for starters. Instrumental only, but lyrical at the same time in the melodic themes.
Progressive rock is where metal meets classical. It will blow your mind, sonically.
I'm currently too poor to pledge, but I hope my words will persuade you.

These are, in my opinion, the greatest three musicians as a group in the world. Neil is without question the greatest drummer to ever live. They work together so beautifully. I don't care how much the song is overplayed it's a piece of my childhood and I love it.

3 musical geniuses right here! Alex, Geddy, and Neil.
Alex Lifeson is the amazing guitarist.
Neil Peart is the Lord of percussion.
Geddy Lee plays bass guitar, synthesizer keyboards, bass synth foot pedals, and he's the singer.
These guys are wizards of rock music!
    Thanks man!
    Keep crushing it!
