'The spirit of radio' in 1980 marked a musical change for Rush after their 70's format of making epic and complex prog rock music... After the 1978 album 'Hemispheres'... Rush were burned out making musically challenging records and wanted to have fun again... In 1979, there was a new British music scene in post-punk rock UK and bands like The Police... Joy Division... The Human League... Simple Minds... were breaking big w/ a new sound called 'new wave'... and Rush's members became fans of that sound that incorporated synthesizers and beats. This song changed my life as a 14 year old back in 1980. I'd never heard anything like it & introduced me to the band that have been the soundtrack of my life ever since. Great reaction....you have some amazing songs to discover.
I have heard so many people say they are the soundtrack of their life. It's true though for me as well, and I've never heard anyone say that about any other band.
One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity NO ONE writes like Neil!!!
Rush had a rule: as difficult as their music was to create, they would not perform a song live that they couldn't recreate themselves, just the three of them. No backing tracks, no extra musicians backstage, none of that. So, Alex will play double-necked guitars (6-string and 12-string electric guitars) or will have an acoustic guitar on a stand that he can play before switching immediately to the electric he has strapped on, AND will play Moog Taurus bass pedals with his feet. Geddy also sometimes plays a double-neck (6-string guitar and bass guitar), plus keyboards, plus Taurus pedals, AND he sings. And Neil plays one of the largest drum kits ever seen, and will use every single piece on the kit in some songs. There are a couple of different live performances of their song Xanadu - one from the late 70s and one from 1980 - where you get a real appreciation for them playing a very elaborate song live, playing ALL of those different instruments themselves, and it sounds like a 12-piece band. Rush was a HUGE influence on a ton of other bands - and not just progressive rock bands but all kinds, from Kiss to the Foo Fighters to Tool to Primus to Nine Inch Nails to the Smashing Pumpkins and SOOOOO many more. The reason was simple: Rush held themselves to an astoundingly high level of musicianship, writing songs that they knew ahead of time would be very difficult to play live, so that they would never get bored no matter how many times they played them. And in that way, they won massive respect from musicians across the board. All the while, they never forgot that the music still had to be great, and they delivered there too. I was lucky enough to see them live 9 times, and those are very treasured memories.
"The Spirit of Radio" is the call sign for CFNY {now called The Edge}102.1 FM in Toronto. A radio station that plays all types of popular music, which is why the song changes up from pop to reggae to harder rock, like changing stations on a dial. It also shows dj's and reporters {Jim Ladd, Bob Coburn, Donna Halper, David Marsden} in the US and Canada who had a big hand in playing Rush. This song was a Thank You from Rush for keeping not just Their music alive and popular, but so many others.
Funny enough, the reason Rush was kept from radio play initially was that a rolling stone magazine article gave the opinion that geddy could not sing They said it sounded like screaming. While Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin was touted as the best rock vocal of the time. (Robert has had problems with his voice in later years and reduced his range the last 20 years while Ged kept it up for 40+ years and toured until the end) Rush just kept booking concerts and selling records without the help of radio play for seven years until Moving Pictures release and Tom Sawyer hit the airwaves. And the rest is history. Spirit of the Radio takes a different meaning when you know these facts. They were never angry or arrogant, they just just kept doing their job, and packing the stadiums. Uplifting is a good way to describe the music in the 80’s. Uplifting in a way that prog rock had never been before. Magical. Due in large part to the lyrical genius of the mind of reader Neil Peart. But the keyboard came out of Ged like a magical spell of sound. They turned a new leaf and became the progressive masters of the airwaves. But the concerts…. Nothing like being in a huge room of people excited by the music like Rush. I know people have spent wads of cash following them around the country to see the same show in different cities. Serious fans. It’s the vibe. Positivity Working man dude. If you want the hard rock. First album. RUSH. Check it out. Geddy did it. It was their first incarnation. WORKING MAN
Pleeeaaase do more Rush. It's amazing how these 3 men performed their songs live. Watch some of their liveperfomances. "YYZ" from the Rush in Rio performance is so amazing. This crowd...🥲 Cheers Mate
😢😢😢 Couldn't hold back the tears when that tribute to Neil message appeared on screen. Incredible talent! Can't imagine how much his bandmates miss him. 😢😢😢 Canada mourns with you, still. 🇨🇦
Just found ya.. Glad to see the enjoyment your getting from discovering the Rabbit Hole of RUSH.. You can watch this video hundreds of times and will still find new things you missed previously.. Lots of messaging of their work spread all through the video
I'm glad you're back in that infinite rabbit whole that is Rush. This is no doubt an amazing song and sure has a lot of people reacting to it. However, you're reacting to one of their very few radio hits. Rush, to a music lover is way more than their hits. But still, their hits are still great pieces of music. If you're going to stick to the hits, I would recommend Subdivisions and Limelight (2 of my all time favourite songs to play on the drums), Step 2: the Fear Trilogy. The order is in reverse so that the first song recorded was part 3 Witch Hunt (1981 Moving Pictures) the second song recorded was The Weapon (1982 Signals) and finally The Enemy within (1984 Grace under Pressure). Listen to them in that order. Pay extra attention to the amazing lyrics in all 3 songs. They all talk about fear but in three different aspects: Fear of the unknown (Witch Hunt), fear of power in a broad sense (The Weapon) and lastly the fears within ourselves (The Enemy Within). All 3 songs are widely different in style and sound and 3 rush staples for fans. Check them out... and then we can get serious bro !!!!
I got to see Rush in 1981. Moving Pictures tour. Just got my driver's license, and took my little sister to the show. I've seen a lot of bands over the years, I'm 59 now. Rush sounds in concert just like they do on their albums. Hearing "The Spirit of Radio" to this day still brings a little mist to the eyes. Growing up in a really messed up household, the radio was my sanctuary. I'm really happy that you found Rush. Music is the one thing that binds all of us. The best music is something like The Spirit of Radio, at least for me. The song makes me happy, reminiscent, a bit sad, and hopeful all in a few minutes. Keep turning that dial kiddo, I'll definitely be checking on you.
2112 is a meal of a song and should be savored from beginning to end! However, if you’re looking for something more of a snack, afternoon tea if you will, Red Barchetta continues the car theme and is foundational, classic, rocking Rush. Old guy enjoying reliving the joy of discovering this music myself, many moons ago…✌️
Rush songs you need to hear... YYZ (live), Nobody's Hero, 2112 (pack a lunch, it's a bit of an epic), La Villa Strangiato, Working Man, Subdivisions, Red Barchetta, Closer to the Heart, Limelight, New World Man, Red Sector A. Just off the top of my head...
Yet another band that will put you on a life changing journey. Three master musicians who made music like you've never heard and never will hear again.
My favorite band ever. The ending of this specific video with the empty drum set just breaks me. I cry everytime. RIP Professor and thanks to Rush for being the soundtrack of my life. Rush is truly "a measure of love and respect".
Arg!!! It makes me cry every single time. The story of radio is going to be lost. For those of us that grew up poor in Texas the radio was EVERYTHING. In particular Mexican radio border blaster stations. Lots of songs reference it. Mexican radio (obviously)” wall of voodoo” “Heard it on the x” ZZ Top. Lots of others. Amazing song. And what a great tribute to Neil❤
Got to see Rush play live at Hera arena in Dayton Ohio. It was a really small place that had a Lotta good bands come through it but it’s gone now. Bonham opened up for them.
Greetings from Portugal MollyBoy. I'm a 47 metalhead here, but hey, sometimes we have to cool down a little. Refresh a little with Rush any time you want. Try Limelight, YYZ, La Villa Strangiato, Red Barchetta, 2112 (instrumental)... there are so many amazing songs from Rush. Keep rockin. Peace
The Spirit of Radio was the tag line for CFNY 102.1 in Toronto, which was my radio station as a kid. This song felt like it was about our music, our experiences, that they were our musical prophets. Hearing you react to it makes me so happy.
12000 views in 13 hours........Rush Army at its best. We worship the greatest Power Trio in the history of music. Their music transcends time, that is, musically and lyrically....
Great reaction! As a guy who was a teenager when this song came out it gives me immense joy to watch you discover them. When Rush started back in 1968 they were just teenagers! Can you imagine? Teenagers writing and playing Working Man!!! You stated that Tom Sawyer was your favorite song but I am betting you will like Limelight even more. The albums with Tom Sawyer and Spirit of Radio really put Rush on the map. Both came out around 1978-1980. To truly appreciate what Rush does you should watch live versions. Much more fun! And if you want to see the pinnacle of their career watch their final song of their final album on their final tour. The Garden from Clockwork Angels. They are truly the masters of their craft. Cheers!
Harder RUSH?!!!🤔🤔 Then "2112" should be your next experience and I Do mean Experience.😉😎👏 But watch the animated version so you can follow along a lot easier. Trust me get your Popcorn ready 🎸🎵🍻🎸💯🔥
Mollyboy, none us know how Geddy does it!! Yes, not only does he play and compose highly technical bass lines, and sing at the same time, he also plays the keyboards and operates the piano pedals on the floor! First time I saw them live I was like whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?????? Couldnt believe what I was seeing. Amazing band from any era. Thanks for the finding the newer video, I hadnt seen it. Its awesome trip down memory lane. RIP Neil Peart.
Grew up in Canada and I wasn't really a Rush fan when I was a teen. But have been revisiting their stuff recently and I now love it. This song was the song that made me realize the band loves music and what it can do. And any song that shows off the writing, playing and packs in a lot of musical ideas.... what's not to love.
Told ya man, Rush Nation will view and subscribe the hell out of you. This is one of their iconic songs. Incredibly well done musically and also radio friendly. Very popular track over the years. Once you get away from the hits and deep dive you will really get your mind blown.
Add "Limelight", "La Villa Strangiato", and "Working Man" live in Cleveland to your upcoming play list. So refreshing to hear a young person who realizes how great a band like Rush was. Keep up the great work, and as always, RIP to The Professor..
Pearl Jam has a reputation of having one of the most loyal fanbases around, but Rush's fanbase is on a whole other level above that. They barely ever got played on the radio back in the day yet every concert was packed and every show was an absolute blast because everyone there was so into it. I have seen them 5 times and that count is on the low end for the typical Rush fan. Truly one of the most amazing bands to ever exist. Every show is like 75% musicians in the audience. Talk to ANYBODY who is big in rock and metal today and ask them who their influences are and Rush is mentioned just about every time. Check out the Live from Rio version of YYZ, which is an instrumental track off the same album as Tom Sawyer. Your life will never be the same after you see that performance.
Dude, don't apologize! You're doing great, just keep doing songs as you want to. Myself, I'm looking for Zep, Rush, Bowie, Yes, Heart, Tull, etc. and I'll click on any songs by them you do, it's great to see someone enjoy them like I do. Just roll with it.

If you really want to hear Geddy sing "heavy" you need to hear "2112", some of his best screaming ever along with a lot of dynamics.
One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity NO ONE writes like Neil!!!
45-years since the first time I heard “The Spirit Of Radio” and it still gives me goosebumps!
It’s pretty crazy how Rush is only a trio!
This tune always makes me feel good!
I knew a guy who picked his dorm room location in Buffalo to make sure he could pick up CFNY back in the 80’s.
ISN'T THAT MIND BLOWING ONLY 3 GUYS BRILLIANT MUSICIANS!! RUSH IS AWESOME!! INCREDIBLE REACTION MOLLYBOY 💙!! 😊🩷🤘✌️
Positivity
Working man dude. If you want the hard rock. First album. RUSH. Check it out. Geddy did it. It was their first incarnation. WORKING MAN
Let's go, Mollyboy!!!
Pleeeaaase do more Rush.
It's amazing how these 3 men performed their songs live.
Watch some of their liveperfomances. "YYZ" from the Rush in Rio performance is so amazing. This crowd...🥲
Cheers Mate
Watching you discover the music I’ve loved for decades makes my soul shine. Keep it up mate.
One of the greatest bands ever. 40 years of bangers
I subscribed after the Rush video led me to your other videos. You're fun to watch, best of luck with your channel.
😢😢😢 Couldn't hold back the tears when that tribute to Neil message appeared on screen. Incredible talent! Can't imagine how much his bandmates miss him. 😢😢😢 Canada mourns with you, still. 🇨🇦
The Necromancer - my favorite old Rush tune. Great reaction.
Agreed. Love that song from their album Caress Of Steel. ❤
Very well said.
Closer to the Heart.
My favorite song !
Rush: Three musicians with an overabundance of talent...unlike anything the world has ever witnessed.
In the video there appears a ship that says "Pirate Radio" it is a true story, watch the movie and you will understand this song better
I was wondering if anyone would mention the fact that pirate radio was real. An important piece of rock history.
Molly gonna love this one definitely in my top ten rush songs
2112 is a meal of a song and should be savored from beginning to end! However, if you’re looking for something more of a snack, afternoon tea if you will, Red Barchetta continues the car theme and is foundational, classic, rocking Rush. Old guy enjoying reliving the joy of discovering this music myself, many moons ago…✌️
2112 is one of the greatest albums ever recorded IMO
They are in the hall of fame for a reason.
I highly recommend the song YYZ (live in Rio) the crowd is insane!
We know how you love your instrumentals, well 'La Villa Strangiato' is a beast from these guys. Studio version first then live.
I was gonna say YYZ live...but this is a better call.
Agreed!
Geddy's voice is what it is you don't mess with perfection.
Arg!!! It makes me cry every single time.
The story of radio is going to be lost. For those of us that grew up poor in Texas the radio was EVERYTHING.
In particular Mexican radio border blaster stations.
Lots of songs reference it.
Mexican radio (obviously)”
wall of voodoo”
“Heard it on the x”
ZZ Top. Lots of others.
Amazing song. And what a great tribute to Neil❤
Back before the internet... Back before Spotify... Back before streaming music... There was radio.
If I can suggest - Subdivision next?
F yeah!!!
12000 views in 13 hours........Rush Army at its best. We worship the greatest Power Trio in the history of music. Their music transcends time, that is, musically and lyrically....
Check out Red Barchetta as well!!
One of my favorites. 🤩
All 3 of them are absolute teachers of their instruments. Canadian gold
#WelcometoCanada !!!! Another Canadian heavy hitter is The Tragically Hip... New Orleans is sinking, is the song that pulled me in when I was 17
"I'm building you a pyramid
with limestone blocks so large..."
Cheers!
RUSH - "DISTANT EARLY WARNING" & "RED SECTOR A"
One of my favorite Rush songs ever! It has sic everything from drums guitar and vocals!
Harder RUSH?!!!🤔🤔
Then "2112" should be your next experience and I Do mean Experience.😉😎👏 But watch the animated version so you can follow along a lot easier. Trust me get your Popcorn ready 🎸🎵🍻🎸💯🔥
Generations from now young people will discover and be blown away by these talented guys.
Should we even tell him about 2112?
It might wreck him
Think he's ready? Or work him up2 it lol❤🇨🇦
@kimbarry4674 might as well bite the bullet...the only thing to fear is never hearing anything as good ever again!
I love you Man is the movie for RUSH fans
Slap da bass
One of the best music videos ever..
Red barchetta ..Yyz great stuff
It’s such a pleasure to watch someone as young and passionate for music as you are, reacting to the music of my era x
Was so lucky to see these guys play a few times, live. They were one of the greatest live acts ever. Their shows were off the chain.
Rush’s music tells a story, in poetry.
The performance vidio is better only to just watch these guys at work. Great band!
Good music is like a sunny day. It doesn't matter what year it is everyone appreciates it.
Welcome to the best band on the planet. Three humble guys from Canada. Enjoy the Rush trip
