Idk if it would score this well in 2022. Mazda got lucky with getting it tested just before stricter tests. With no central air bag that might drop it down to 4 stars now.
Mazda have one trick up their sleeve. When Ford pulled out of brands such as Mazda and Volvo, Mazda got new investment and reinvented themselves. Part of the new R&D was injected into new metallurgy techniques. They teamed up with Sumitomo Metal Industries and created a world first, 1,800 MPa Ultra-High Tensile Steel. This is the current automotive world record, and is patented so only really available on Mazda products. They've used it where it counts in their current products which obviously helps results. As shown by EuroNCAP, the Mazda CX-30 holds the best rating for front occupant safety of 99%. This is the highest result ever received to date since 2009. Furthermore in the US, recent changes to side impact with heavier and higher loads showed weakness across all vehicles in their first round of testing. Only the CX-5 passed, and the area hit was the area which used the patented steel in large amounts. The steel that Mazda produces was inspired by Samurai swords (although no car maker could actually make their steel the way Samurai swords are made in whole, because they take years to make and would be far too expensive).
Seems to be the case, in small SUV category. Best in class. But bare in mind that you can only compare it to the cars of the same weight. Because if some other small SUV is a bit less safe than Mazda, but it is 300 kg more heavier, if those two cars would to collode, the heavier vehicle would be safer. But if they would to hit a concrete wall, than the lighter car would be safer.
@sennheiser If two cars of the same weight collide, both cars will stop at the spot of the crash. But if one car is heavier, in collision that car will not stop at the place of impact, but will push the lighter car some distance untill the full stop. On the other hand, the lighter car will stop, and then start to move backwards, so it will experience a lot more G-forces than the heavier car.
Since the car will be a complete write off after any one of these crashes why so conservative with deploying the side curtain airbags? The whiplash can still cause a serious injury. Why not go all in with deploying the airbags?
Mazda want to tell me that replacing the wing mirror cowl is a big and expensive job when I can see that those things just pop off given enough presure.

Side impact pole test didn't look that great to me, and seemed to shift a long way sideways on the other, vehicle impact, side test. What's this thing weigh?
