    • @iihabibaii
      @iihabibaii 4 года назад +39

Devilicus there was a problem once but I think that was because of the bitdefender anti-virus. Now I’m running on Kaspersky. The fans are very loud. The webcam sucks and is positioned so badly. Gets dirty very easily. Otherwise laptop works perfectly fine. High graphics and no lagging.

    • @iihabibaii
      @iihabibaii 4 года назад +31

Devilicus oh and It loads up in about 30 seconds btw. Pretty fast I would say. Good gaming laptop indeed. Any other problem you would face will be because of Windows 10 pro and how much it suck. It’s not really the laptop’s fault. It’s the best price point and availability wise.

    • @aaash3842
      @aaash3842 4 года назад +1

@@iihabibaii perfect thank you so much for the quick response, i dont care too much about the webcam so any issues with that arnt too worrying. on the video dave talks about a great thermals, does the laptop heat up alot after around 6 hours, sorry i have alot of questions. :p

    • @iihabibaii
      @iihabibaii 4 года назад +24

Devilicus Ah don’t worry about it. As as many questions as you would like!
Not always. It depends on what you’re doing with it. For example watching movies all day? No problem. Playing for example GTA V? It will heat up like crazy but the fans will a pretty good job at cooling it down yet very very loud. Battery wise not the best. Always play games with charger plugged in to get the best performance. I do play games on it sometimes more than 8 hours and laptop is pretty good. Loading games with mods in no time. When laptop starts heating up the fans have got your back! Always keep the fan outlets ventilated to avoid overheating.

I have the y545. I bought it to replace my 2015 Macbook pro. To be honest I kind of hate it sometimes. I feel like the hardware is fairly decent for the price, But when it comes to actual video editing performance it is hit or miss. Sometimes the machine can't handle 1080P video editing. I constantly have to shut down premiere pro and re open it to make it function properly. And the machine takes a really long time to save screen shots. I think the SSD drive is to slow when saving things. On a good note, I love this channel🙂👍!

I bought the Legion Y540 with the 512GB SSD variant with 8GB ram and Core i5 at around 56k INR (about 650 EUR or 755 USD)
So I've been using this laptop extensively for the past 3 months or so and here's a list of things that I've noticed.
    Pros-
For the price, you get a pretty beefy laptop. The specs are pretty good.
It has a Samsung NVME M.2 SSD so it boots up within seconds (4 seconds last time I checked) and is quite quick.
I love the fact the majority of the ports are on the backside (including a USB-C), allowing for a neater and more organised setup.
The inbuilt keyboard on this laptop is really nice to type and the backlit lights work nicely, I type a lot and at around 80wpm and I was able to adjust to this keyboard quite quickly.
If you're not satisfied enough with the specs and want to upgrade it, it's really easy to do so, I've installed an additional 8GB ram stick (Crucial RAM 8GB DDR4 2666 MHz) and it works perfectly. I'm also looking forward to installing an additional 2.5in SSD. Lenovo doesn't void the warranty if you choose to upgrade, which is really nice.
The Lenovo unboxing experience was really nice, and on first-time usage, there was not a bunch of bloatware pre-installed applications (unlike ASUS *cough*) and it's just typically Macfee app as well as the Lenovo vantage which I do in fact use a lot and find really helpful.
I love the built quality and the design of this laptop, It's sleek and elegant. It doesn't have the gamer-ish look to it but this black Legion looks quite professional, classy look to it, which I find far more appealing. Despite being completely made out of plastic, the body feels quite rigid and with minimal flex.
The laptop screen opens up nicely and to a full 180. The hinge is quite strong and feels reliable.
I've had no issues with gaming so far, it runs most games like a charm. CSGO, GTA V, Warfare all run at smooth frame rates with no noticeable lag. I use
Blender a lot too and I haven't noticed any issues with rendering.
The laptop has pretty good cooling and I haven't noticed it overheating at all. (I use a laptop stand, which elevated it just a bit which helps a lot with the cooling.)
    Cons-
The first major drawback of this laptop is its battery. It has a terribly short battery life despite turning off the backlit keyboard and limiting the CPU usage. Meaning, you will need to carry the rather heavy charging supply for this laptop where ever you go. This is not ideal as the laptop and the charging supply are both quite heavy.
The keyboard as mentioned is really nice when typing, however, I've noticed it gets really dirty quite quickly if you're not careful and the keycaps are made of ABS plastic meaning it gets a bit glossy over time due to the oils present in the finger which is really annoying and I suggest getting a keyboard cover to deal with it or use an external keyboard instead.
The camera isn't the best, it's located at the bottom of the screen which gives it a weird angle.
I have faced some software issues, like the keyboard not working in the windows login and some others with WiFi and Bluetooth but I think that that's just a Windows 10 and Microsoft problem.
The 512GB storage capacity might not be enough for a lot of people. So you would need to add an additional HDD or 2.5in SSD or a hybrid drive.
    Side notes-
The camera is located at the bottom of the display, which might be an inconvenience to some people but I really like the fact the top bezel is very thin and I don't use the camera all that much.
The screen is decent. It's 1080p with a 60hz refresh rate, however, considering that its max brightness is only at 250nits it might be annoying to work outside. I might just end up replacing the screen with a better one with 300nit brightness and a faster refresh rate (120hz or 75hz).
I don't use the touchpad often and instead, use my own external mouse ( Razer Deathadder) and I highly recommend you do too, laptop touchpads are not the greatest and a mouse is a really worthwhile investment.
    UserBenchmarks Performance Results-
    UserBenchmarks: Game 37%, Desk 87%, Work 31%
    CPU: Intel Core i5-9300HF - 79.2%
    GPU: Nvidia GTX 1650 (Mobile) - 42.3%
    SSD: Samsung MZVLB512HBJQ-000L2 512GB - 208.2%
    RAM: Ramaxel RMSA3260ME78HAF-2666 1x8GB - 44.6%
    MBD: Lenovo 81SY
Overall, my final thoughts after 3 months of usage. Would I have chosen to buy a different laptop instead? No, based on this price range, I think it's one of the best one's out there. If my budget was a little bit higher, I'd get the Legion 5 or ASUS Zephyrus. The look and the feel of this laptop are very nice and I'm quite happy with the product so far.

The build quality of this laptop is amazing imo. Performance is top notch and handles literally any game i throw at it. Now for a game like RDR2 i did tweak graphic settings a little to hit that well above 60 FPS with at least ultra textures and other graphical settings customized between medium high and low and i get average around 70-90 FPS in RDR2. Warzone around 90 avg FPS on pro settings. I initially wanted the new Zephryus g15 laptop with the 30 series and ryzen 9 but didnt have the money. this legion y540 definitely satisfies all my needs.

I just got my Lenovo Y540 with the i7, RTX 2060 and 144hz 15.6" screen and I love it. It can handle anything I throw at it and it handles raytracing very well with that RTX card. I only paid 999 at walmart so it was a great deal on a very powerful laptop. Fans are a little loud and the battery life sucks, but since I use wireless earbuds and you can't really play games without it being plugged in the sound of the fans and battery aren't really a problem. Quality is very solid as well. With the 144 hz screen you can achieve high frame rates with excellent graphics. I would highly recommend if you want a powerful gaming laptop for a really good price.

    I agree here.
Between these 2, I prefer the design of the Lenovo Y540.
The metal top of the Lenovo Y545 might be something people might be into in terms of durability.
But it's great to hear that the Lenovo Y540 is built well enough and is still durable.
But that center hinge on the Lenovo Y545 (again I agree) is a big concern.
The hinge seems like it'd be more prone to breaking and it's disappointing that Lenovo went with this design.
    2:21
Interesting that there are differencs in thermals between the two.
Most people would presume it'd be similar/same.
Thermal design is very important for the life span of a laptop and (yet again) I agree that the Lenovo Y540 is much better in this regard.
    2:56
I like when laptops have easy access to things like RAM and internal storage. I especially hate when they do it like Apple and solder on components.
It's nice that it comes with both an M.2 slot as well as a 2.5" slot for internal storage.
    3:03
Is the battery user-upgradable or is it soldered on the motherboard?
That seems a bit too small and I think it'd be nice if they sold a higher capacity battery for this laptop.

It's great that the Lenovo Y540 has a lot of ports, and kept in the back so it doesn't look as cluttered.
It is a little bit of a shame the USB doesn't support Thunderbolt since I presume a lot of people use it for the external GPU.
Thanks for a great comparison video.
I agree that if either of these are something you want, the Lenovo Y540 is the one to go with.

      Ok I bought it. (Y540)
I absolutely love it. I have dual boot with w10 and ubuntu. If the drivers don't work after installing ubuntu (The wifi adapter didn't work) simply connect the laptop to the internet via ethernet, bluetooth, or usb cable with another laptop or phone, and make sudo update and sudo upgrade. With that it automatically downloads the necessary drivers.
This thing is fast. Love the anti-glare/matte screen and the size of the screen. Quite big screen and keyboard in a not so big laptop.
The keyboard feels normal but works pretty well. Responsive. Also the touchpad is better than it seems on video. Big enough. I use the digital clicks tapping fast on it, so I almost don't use the touchpad buttons.
The battery (52.5wh version. There is also a 57wh version) is very very short compared to the xiaomi mi notebook air 13.3 (My previous laptop). Almost half as much. With Lenovo Vange's hybrid mode in windows and intel graphics (Configurable with "sudo prime-select intel") in ubuntu to save energy. About 3 hours viewing a pdf and yt video.
In spite of the battery I really recommend it.

I bought the Legion Y540 17" w/the 9th gen i7 / 1660ti / 144 Mhz panel / 1 TB SSD. I really love this thing. Coming from a long line of Dell laptops in the past, this lenovo is a breath of fresh air in terms of design. Plus, the keyboard is nice and quiet, the colors on the screen are vibrant and there have been zero issues with this device at all! And I went through 3 laptops when I upgraded! Went through a few returns from hardware issues with other devices. First with HP, then with Asus (twice) and now finally settled in with the Lenovo legion! Couldn't be happier!
Funny thing about something you said, "Inside we have a keyboard".... The last Asus Zephyrus Rog G I returned ALSO had a keyboard on the inside but, it seemed to be an option that only worked during setup! The whole reason I returned the Zephyrus G is that the keyboard did not register at all as if it weren't even on the device! I actually had to plug in an external keyboard to access the laptop and delete all the files from the device. Never saw anything like that before in my life! So to hear that, "inside we have a keyboard" is actually some useful info so long as the keyboard actually works when using it!

The y540 has probably the most minimalistic design I’ve ever seen in a gaming laptop. I had many options between acer and HP but I chose this one because of design, it is sleek af. You can turn the legion logo on the back with Ctrl + F to make it look even more smooth. I Got the rtx 2060 with 144hz and performance is very decent. . I do complain about the camera though, it wasnt an issue year ago since I didn’t use it or need it until nowadays’ pandemic situation. For those looking to buy this great product, you could look at the 2021 version, Lenovo fixed the camera position, they realized they fucked up. When you type the camera it shows your fingers very closely instead of you and it sucks for meetings or classes with cam on, it’s a really bad cam position for 2020’s version. After deciding and making comparisons for ages, I finally bought This Lenovo Y540 laptop - i5 9300h,8gb ram, gtx 1650, 512 Gb ssd.
I wanted to go for the 1660 ti version but that was almost 300 dollars more, and i couldn’t afford it at this time(let’s hope for the future)
I’ll say I was a bit let down because I always wanted a 1060 or 1660 ti laptop, but when this arrived i was just blown away. This just does not look like a flashy gaming laptop like the Acer predator and others. The design looks much more detailed, and subtle in real life.
As per the perforhmance, the i5 usually sits between 2.4 and 3 GHz but under loads, I’ve seen it boost up to 4.1 GHz.
So far, THERE HAS BEEN NO THERMAL THROTTLING. I get how sad it is that you can’t control the fans manually but this laptop have the best automatic cooling that I’ve seen in a while.
Gaming wise, even if you’re an avid gamer, most modern games will get you up to 60 FPS in a mix of high settings.
I’m not much of a really hardcore gamer, I’ve bought it mostly for a mix of production, design and gaming.
Eg - GTA 5 @1080p, With a mix of very high settings(grass quality and reflection - ultra), usually sits between 55 - 70 FPS.
If you’re a really avid gamer then sure go for the higher version but THIS WILL NOT DISSAPPOINT YOU.
Thanks Dave for helping me with this purchase decision!

I have had this laptop with RTX 2060 now for almost 6 months and it has been worth my every penny.
Ive been using it for school and work and no one noticed that is was a gaming laptop. This is the main reason why I bought it over Helios 300.
Plays every game I throw at it with 60 fps on high or ultra. It had only problem with RDR2 but with some testing I play it 60 fps on High/Ultra and few on Medium settings.
    Really a great laptop.

In China only Y545(Y7000P) gets the 144Hz screen.

Had my hands on my friend's Y540 today. Here are things that I am quite annoyed about:
    1. the plastic lid's rigidity absolutely sucks! You don't even need to try to bend the lid, you can literally just move the hinges on one side and you can see the lid bending pretty well as the other side hinges catch up. This will prove to be a big problem down the line as this much torque to today's thin LCDs mean the LCD will fail (usually cold solder joints on the dozen of ribbon cables that connect from the LCD itself to its controller)!
    2. The hinge design is bad. Due to the softness of the lid and the fact that the hinges go to plastic screw poles on the bottom, it feels very flimsy to open and close and it isn't gonna be long before the screw poles break and then your lid or bottom cover starts separating whenever you move the hinge! As of now the hinges are already making creaking noises when opening.
    3. Unlike this one, my friend's came with Ramaxel branded RAM sticks! Yes they would work more or less for the most part but in my opinion this is unacceptable for gaming laptops!
    4. The touchpad buttons on my friend's unit are really unsatisfying to use. It feels like you are bending the plastics down to actuate.
    5. Very basic BIOS. It's the extremely generic type of BIOS that's used on Lenovo ideapads for example, and it barely provides much info for troubleshooting. For example, I tried to turn on the machine with RAM removed and all it does is just sit there with the power LED on and gives no error beeps or flashes or anything like that.
I think I am being overly picky for laptops of this price range (especially gaming laptops) as I come from Dell Latitudes and Lenovo ThinkPads and all of these are taken for granted by me, but just because it's cheap doesn't mean these issues don't exist! If you buy this laptop at this kind of price range you need to be informed to expect these kind of things usually associated with low quality laptops.

    Hi Dave!
I've seen enough reviews to know that the Y545 had thermal issues and overall, Y540 is better in performance due to its well designed ventilation system on the side.
However, where I live, for the same configuration which is 9th gen i7, 1660ti and 144hz screen, the Y545 is being sold $215 less and with 250 more gigabyte of SSD!
Is the Y540 really worth the $215 more ? Is thermal really and issue on Y545? I mainly plan to play GTA V, Fortnite, CSGO, LoL and I'm more focused towards video editing. I want to use it as a work station with casual gaming on the side.
Please advise me on what your thoughts/opinions are on this. If Y540 and Y545 was the same price, i would definitely go on Y540 but this price discrepancy makes me question that a little bit.
    Thanks and kind regards!

I had a Legion Y530 (1050) for a few months during my final year at uni and I can say it was a solid machine. The frame, lid, keyboard and hinge were very sturdy. I typed my whole thesis and run engineering software and it performed smoothly. I only did some light gaming on the side but the machine seemed to handle it well. The fan wasn't too noisy too. If the Y540 inherits all the good stuff from Y530 and includes extra upgrades, I would highly recommend people to try it out.
