  • How’s the bike after the fist service? In this special episode I discuss the results on the bike’s performance after the 1st service at 620miles.
    Never been on a motorcycle before and during lockdown I decided to learn how to ride. This is my journey and my thoughts.

    I paid significantly more for my first service in Germany. 😮
    I had my Svartpilen 125 for about 2 months last summer and rode it for about 2000 km before totaling it by crashing it into a ditch.
    It was great fun on small curvy roads roads. I tried to avoid main roads with higher speeds and lots of traffic. The little engine is just not capable to keep up with traffic in all situations and I personally do feel rather uncomfortable being tailgated by a big ass SUV. 😉
    In the city, I prefer my Vespa. So much more convenient :)
    After it was clear I totaled the bike in the crash although it was rather harmless, I decided I want to continue my motorcycle journey but I didn't want to by yet another 125. So I pulled myself together and (finally) signed up the get the unlimited license.
    It took till mid November to finish the license. Mainly due to overloaded administration and ridiculous processing times.
    My driving test and some of the practice sessions upfront took place at below 5 degrees. So I already had my fair share of testing thermal gear before I even got my license 🥶It worked fairly well for me. I wore the same layers as I would wear for skiing on a glacier.
    I was convinced I would buy the Svartpilen 401 once I've got the license.
    Since the Svarpilten 401 is sold out all over Germany, I took a Vitpilen 401 for a testride and the unexpected happened: I didn't like it. Not because of the low clip-ons (they are awful in my opinion, but I knew what to expect) but I didn't like the engine. I thought 44 HP is more than enough for such a light bike but it's kinda not. It felt like it's struggling to get going at highway speeds. Seems like I've got used to the 70HP of the (unbelievably ugly) Kawi Z650 I had in driving school much quicker than I anticipated.
    So I had to look for a different bike and in the end found a 2020 Svartpilen 701 still sitting at a dealership, which I bought for a quite attractive price last week.
    Now I'm waiting for the whether to change so I can actually ride it 🤪

      Thanks for the story mate. Such an interesting journey!
      So many questions though :) Out of curiosity, how much did you pay for your first service? Also why do you thing the Vespa is more convenient? Is it the automatic transmission? The small wheels make me really uncomfortable and I could never get used to the riding position. Always felt that I’d drop off the bike in the first bump. I used a Vespa for my CBT which is basically a provisional licence here in the UK (up to 125cc etc.) and I hated every bit of the Vespa. This made me stop considering scooters altogether, even for a city bike.
      The most interesting part is you skipping the 401 for the 701 though. I never thought of that but now you made me really thinking. And when I say thinking, I mean totally reconsidering my 3 year plan :) when you start riding her, please give me an update. I’m really curious ;)

      I paid 260€ for the first service.
      I guess I like the same thing about the Vespa that you hate 😉. The automatic transmission does play a significant role. It's just way more convenient when stuck in stop and go traffic not to have to deal with the clutch all the time. Also the small wheels and short wheel base make it extremely nimble. (Some would say unstable 😉). I love the agility. It doesn't feel unstable to me. It's all up to personal preference, I suppose. I have been riding a 50cc scooter for ever. I'm very used to scooters.
      Regarding the 701 over the 401: during driving school on the Z650 I learned that 70ish HP are way less scary than I thought. Of course you need some throttle control, but you do on your 125, too, when in a low gear, right?
      In the end, you can't decide what's your next bike is gonna be without riding it. You need to take as many bikes as possible out on a test ride once you've got your license. Years of planning might fall apart, when you take the bike on the road and you just don't like it.
      So don't think too much. Enjoy your Svartpilen 125. Gather experience, go on a parking lot and practice, collect miles and once it's time to move on, try different bikes. You'll know after a few minutes, whether the bike is for you or not.
      I for example took a Triumph Scrambler 1200 on a test ride. It looks stunningly beautiful (and is stunningly expensive). At first, I was scared of the large engine, which turned out to be super smooth and easy to control. But for me, the handling of the bike was terrible. I knew after the first few corners, that it wasn't for me.
      Good luck on your future journey!

    Nice video, as always. ;)
    I think the same way about mine (booked in at Hemel for just over a month). Thie bike is awesome in so many ways, as you said, like a big bike, but just with a 125 engine. At the end of the day though, it is still a 125. Very few with a full licence would buy it for that reason alone, but as a springboard to get practice for DA, and then something bigger, it's absolutely perfect and I love it. Going to try and work on that this year.

      This is exactly like my plan! Although I passed the theory I still have to do my DAS. Thought I would gain experience with the 125 but I don’t think I’m near where I want to be yet.

I don't have any prior experience on motorbikes, but I've been driving around for 2 days now, and it's so easy to get to know how it goes. For now it's more than enough for me, but I can imagine that after a while, I'll be longing for something more powerful. But untill that time, I'll enjoy my little svarty.

    I don't think the bike engine has changed at all, but the rider is no longer scared to twist the throttle a bit more because the gear change threshold has been moved. You were a slave to the red light!
    I had my heart set on a 401 for a long time while I was doing my DAS, but I'm too tall (6'2") for it - looked like a gorilla on a child's bicycle when I sat on one 😂 - and I thought I'd tire of a single cylinder 42BHP bike given I have a part rural commute to work. I think if I lived in the city I'd still have got one, because it's a unique beautiful looking bike in my mind too

    • @vanyer401
      @vanyer401  2 года назад

      Completely agree! Slave to a bloody red light indeed. My dream one was/is (?) the 401? I’m not tall though. What did you get in the end?

      I’m afraid nothing Near East London. You have two options, both relative far away. I use the “HUSKY 1903 Wood Lane , HP2 4TP Hemel Hempstead”. It’s an official service dealer. The other official dealer is in Berkshire. Many other can service your bike but they are not “official” dealers so I can’t recommend them in that regard. Source: Husqvarna website.

    How much the bar end mirrors? Do u bought directly from husqvarna ? Or its from other third party brand ? And is there any advantage or disadvantage having it ?

    • @vanyer401
      @vanyer401  2 года назад +1

      I discuss this in a previous video if you wanna check it out. The conclusions is that the bar end mirrors are a must in my opinion because with the stock you can’t see anything behind. They are Husky (directly from them) and I can see now clearly behind. Only disadvantage is that they make the bike wider so a little bit more challenging filtering in traffic but still, you must able to see behind. The cost was £147.

    • @vanyer401

      Like a 125 :) I think it requires skill. If you are skilful enough you can pass other 125 motos. I am not, so automatics are faster than me I think? After the 1st service the situation is dramatically better though.
