erm actually a sitrus berry only restored 30hp in gen 3 this was changed to 25% in gen 4
also with the figy berry etc. - they only restore 1/8 of a pokemon's max hp in gen 3. if these berries had the same effects as they do in later gens, you would see them sometimes in competitive play.
As a grass type die hard I miss the berry growing mechanic SO much:( it was such a fun little side gimmick and I loved that you could get cutesy plant nursery trainers in some games
I need GameFreak to bring back the unique tree sprites of each berries in the Gen 3 overworld.
I agree big time. It hurts a little seeing the berry tree sprites/models on Bulbapedia get less and less unique
They aren't in the mainline games, but from Mystery Dungeon Sky there's Oren (not Oran, it's a different item), Bananas, and Apples.
I really hope they consider adding new berries, even if for no other reason than for worldbuilding. I love that some of them pull from obscure plants like the (original) Chilan berry which is based off a Chinese Lantern.
Personally I would like seeing some of the berries that have no use outside of contests be given uses
Bluk and Wepear could be connected with Razz, Nanab, and Pinap berries (I.e. wild Pokemon offensive or defensive stats being lowered or defeated wild Pokemon dropping increased drops)
And even if those two berries were given effects, they would still leave 9 berries with no use outside of contests
With how much they've done to help players change stats and IVs, a set of berries to aid in this field would be amazing.
Berries similar to proteins would be nice. With a similar effect to the feathers from BW to be a little less OP.
There’s enough berries in these games man
additions & corrections
2:04 - sitrus berry restores 30 hp only in gen 3, changed to 25% in later games. only really usable in level 50 formats in gen 3 (which isnt exactly a standard), but the improved version sees occasional use in later generations.
2:17 - figy berry et al. only restored 1/8 of a pokemon's max HP when introduced in gen 3, making them unviable on introduction but they saw some use competitively in later generations when the mechanics were changed.
3:54 - would be remiss not to mention the "pomeg glitch" that allows arbitary code execution in gen 3. the idea is that the game does not check that lowering a pokemon's HP EVs will not result in it having 0 HP. this allows you to go into battle without a healthy pokemon on your team, causing the game to do unexpected things.
8:00 - note that the enigma berry looks like a question mark :) highlighting how its original design in gen 3 is as a placeholder.
other notes:
- lum berry was one of the best berries when it was introduced, on offensive pokemon the one-time immunity to status can be huge. a common user of it in OU in gen 3 is dragon dance tyranitar, which can use it to get an additional turn of setup in front of threats like thunder wave zapdos and will-o-wisp gengar.
- leppa berry has caused issues in competitive play with players being able to force endless battles using it in combination with recycle. pokemon showdown now has an endless battle clause in most formats to prevent this abuse.
- chesto berry is infamously used in the ChestoRest combination, with the idea being that you set up with a boosting move, heal up with Rest and then become instantly more threatening at full HP after. it's not a common strategy any more but does have its place.
- the "resist" berries (occa berry for example) are generally pretty useful in competitive play, as are the "pinch" berries (salac berry for example)
- gen 4 introduced the move natural gift and each berry causes the move to have a different typing + base power
OH WE'RE SO BACK!
We need the pinkan berry in the games. It would be so cool
yeah, they are not gonna make pink versions of every pokemon lmao
Awesome video!! I would’ve liked to have seen you reference the berry growing mechanics of Gen 7, Pokepelago, where it allowed you to access your very own berry farm while on the go as well as letting you upgrade the size of your berry farm even further
I kinda want them to bring back some of the old e-reader berries. Even if mostly in spin-offs or just 1 per new game at a time, I feel like it would be cool to bring them back somehow.
I would love to see them all back, no matter what use they have! They have some really fun designs and it’s really criminal that they’re locked to such a niche corner of the series
In Gen 3, the Liechi berry could only be found on the elusive Mirage Island!
It’s wild to think that gen 6 (XY/ORAS) is the last game you can have all berries in one game
The berries with no effect are only present in games with contests
But Kee and Maranga berries were not present in BDSP
So to have all berries in one game (XY/ORAS) you would have to already have the Enigma berry, obtain the Enigma berry from someone, or edit your save to obtain an Enigma berry
Honestly it would be nice if the berries with no effects were given effects (similar to the Go trio of berries) just so they aren’t exclusive to gen 3, 4, and their remakes
I was trying to find a list of the berries in bdsp, purely out of personal curiosity, and couldn’t find one. It’s a shame that they were so close to the whole set. Thankfully I should have a couple Gen 6 enigma berries kicking around so I might go and try to complete the set.
I Also would love to see some more berries get repurposed, and even see some of the ereader berries make a return, I like a lot of their designs and it’s a shame they’re locked away to such a small area of the franchise.
@@Turtle-Soup bulbapedia has a list of berries, I noticed that the berries are listed with a numerical 1 to 65 to the side of them except for Kee and Maranga berries, quickly checked their individual wiki pages and there is no obtainable method shown for BDSP
Hopo berries also don’t have a number next to it but I can only assume that it will only ever be a Legends exclusive berries (Lore likely explaining that it’s a species of berry that either went extinct or mutated into a modern day berry)
The enigma beery is Darkrai droppings surely. Just ask Darmanitan.
(raises hand in mystery dungeon) is an apple a Berry
Missed the Balloon Berry in the TCG, though it has the exact same effect as the Fluffy Berry.
Just a heads up when making these kinds of videos, long lists usually get people to bounce while you're reading them off. Better to display a table and talk about how this berry group (or whatever) modifies stuff instead of droning on lol.
Keep it up!
The Urge to do Contest again 😅
Bairy juice
My favorite is the Fert berry, it smells so ominous
Was the lum berry mentioned?
Yee, in the initial set of berries after gen 2.
C'mon Game Freak, bring back the Niniku berry. Give it a use if you have to!
berry time!
