cold open with this one, I enjoyed making it, it's a weird concept I had for a while. We can do one about TNA wrestlers or the Attitude Era, just wanted to test it out here. These guys were very different to each other, Jericho being the mostly logical guy who despite this, had his moments with HBK which showed how cold he could be, Triple H giving out bounties. Who was the best heel of the 2000s? A minor edit around 6:26 is gonna show up, just wanted to mention it.

If we're including TNA we've got to talk about Jeff Jarrett's own reign of terror (first heel win I ever saw where the crowd littered the ring with rubbish) plus Kurt Angle as the paranoid godfather of the main event mafia. Both great, especially now I'm old enough to really appreciate heels like Jarrett

Randy Orton in 2009-2010 will always remain one of my favorite heels of all time. He had the look, was at his leanest, the nearly bald skin fade, and he clearly put alot of effort into making his mannerisms slow and methodical both in his entrances and matches. Who could forget the storylines of him punting everyone and bullying the Legacy.
The guy was the epitome of the perfect heel. There's a video here called "Randy Orton 2009 badass entrance", everyone watch it once to get an idea.

Heels in the 2000s were truly menacing beyond belief. They acted way more evil and did stuff that legitimately got controversy for them and the company as a whole. Triple H with his infamous reign of terror and burying many talent on Raw, Randy Orton as the Legend Killer was a menace, Edge as the Rated R Superstar speaks for itself, and so many more. Heels truly were more evil back then, and I miss that creativity with them back then.

For me 2008-2009 Randy Orton will always be the greatest Heel of the 2000's. That entire journey of watching Orton come back from his shoulder injury with tattooed sleeves that had skulls covering his arms to watching him lose his mind punt kicking people in the temple was one of the most maniacal angles I've ever seen. There are some wrestlers who just have that look like they were made for the role they played and Orton played it flawlessly. You actually believed he was fighting an inner demon that wanted nothing but to inflict pain onto anyone who stepped in the ring with him. And no one was off limits either.

That's why I like Reigns heel run - The Tribal Chief gimmick is present in everything he says and does. He lives and breathes his gimmick and you see it in his matches, the segments, his promos the way he uses his seniority in the family to manipulate everyone to do his bidding.
There's hardly a heel these days where they do that whereas in the 2000s, it was full of guys who did that exact thing - which was living up to their moniker.
Triple H - The Cerebral Assassin
    Edge - The Rated R Superstar/Ultimate Opportunist
Randy Orton - The Viper/Legend Killer
    Undertaker - Big Evil
Lesnar - Here Comes The Pain/The Next Big Thing (First WWE run)
Kurt Angle - The Wrestling Machine

As a kid that occasionally would watch RAW and Smackdown during the 2000s, I will definitely give an unpopular hot take: during the 2000s when Bradshaw became JBL, JBL was actually a really good wrestler during that time period and just like Triple H, Jericho, Kane, etc, the heel role suited him perfectly to a T....

    • @terrorazeing
      @terrorazeing 11 месяцев назад +1

It was a good move when Bradshaw became JBL because at least Smackdown had its' own top heel that can equal Raw's Triple H when it comes to brand dominance. I remember he also formed his own stable named The Cabinet with Orlando Jordan, the Basham Brothers and Jillian Hall.

Modern heels are mild in WWE. An example of a top heel is Rhea Ripley who get's cheered, with internet fans asking "why can't we cheer who we like". Many modern fans don't respect the concept of playing along and boo'ing the heels and many modern wrestlers secretly enjoying being cheered as a heel and seem afraid to get real heat. There are of course some exceptions but you can't beat old school heels - nothing more satisfying than seeing a top heel and top babyface go at it. This can only be achieved if the crowd play along and accept the scripted dynamic and scenario (they often don't).

I think kayfabe being gone is also a major factor why it's hard to create a completely heel character nowadays. Imagine WWE trying to create a new heel character with the same level of sadism like Orton back in 2009, but then you would also see the same wrestler on some podcasts or interviews being his real self, as a nice guy... So how can we hate that character when you know that wrestler's a really nice guy outside the ring? As an adult audience, it's hard to suspend disbelief in that cases lol
I guess the key to it is to not let their selves be over-exposed in social media, so at least we have no way to know how they are in real life... That way it's easier to suspend disbelief which basically makes pro-wrestling fun.
