Triple H’s WrestleMania X8 main event is more about him dealing with his wife while the reigning WWE Champion, Chris Jericho got relegated to being Mrs Helmsley/Levesque’s whipping boy and it’s also overshadowed by the memorable Rock vs Hogan match.
Seven years later, Triple H main evented another WrestleMania yet his WWE title match got overshadowed by Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels which is an all-time classic like Rock vs Hogan!

When HHH initially returned, I swear it was definitely one of the greatest returns ever. That loud crowd pop truly was amazing and while it was risky to turn HHH a babyface, I’m glad it was able to work for a bit. While it was legendary to see him dethrone Jericho at Mania X8, it does suck his reign didn’t since he lost at Backlash, while he still had classics on SmackDown!, it wasn’t hitting the same, and soon as he went back to Raw when Bischoff came, and then turned heel against HBK, history changed for the better😁. But as for his babyface run, it was ok, just a shame, it didn’t go well after Mania. Excellent video, homie.😊

He knew he could come back. And I was grateful it wasn't completely torn like the first one. I was hopeful he might become champion again since he hadn't had it in 2 ½ years. And after reading his book when he talks about his disappointing 02 face run being over before he really had a chance to show he could be one, the momentum in 07, felt like it was his time. Although in 2006, the crowd was pushing hard as hell for him to get a tweener run. Even if management was still fully behind the Cena train.

In my opinion, while Triple H's return was met with so much fanfare, his face run at this time was underwhelming. His feud with Jericho didn't really hit the mark and was immensely overshadowed by The Rock vs Hogan, he won the title at the worst possible time, while Hogan was gaining so much traction as a babyface, and his change in his wrestling style, though necessary so he could avoid injuries, impacted the quality of his matches. It's no wonder he had to turn heel afterwards, he's just better suited for that role, not that he isn't a good babyface, but it doesn't hold a candle to his work as a heel.

  • @Speedyreedy1218

The 02 Rumble was stacked with stars. HHH made the most sense. But it wasn't an obvious choice.
You could see Kurt, Austin, or Undertaker as a favorite.
H v Austin should've happened because remember Austin set HHH up stealing his cellphone and using it to stalk Sara (Undertaker's wife)...And Austin made HHH lose the IC title to Kane at Judgement Day. And HHH got injured trying to save Austin from tapping in their tag match. So, in storyline, HHH has plenty of reasons to want Austin's ass.

@@HurrikaneBEA5T It wasn't weak for a cell. Most people weren't digging Jericho at the top. You had fickle fans wanting him to get there. Then when he was there, mock him.
H was the only top guy having major matches with him (Last Man Standing, HIAC). Austin primarily worked him in tags. When Austin or Rock worked Jericho in singles, there was always interference or a weapon of some kind used. Even though they were big faces, they were protected. So that stunted Jericho's legitimacy as a top guy. Different story in 2008. They believed in him then. Usually you aren't taken seriously til you go heel.

So I went and checked what the original idea for the Mania main event angle was and it was gonna be an affair angle where when Trips was out Steph had this affair at first with RVD but then later it was revealed in tape it was Jericho this would of made more sense as to why Steph and Jericho joined but sadly Trips put it down cause he thought it was not believable so instead we got the Lucy the dod debacle for an angle instead.
I learned about this from Jericho's inside the ropes interview from 2019 btw.

Well there really was nobody believable left. Stone Cold and Angle basically flip flopped the championship like 3 times during the late summer early fall and it'd be odd to have them dethrone Jericho when they held that same championship like 3 months earlier. Rock basically was Wolrd champion ( although that was the WCW World championship which technically was still a World championship within WWE) by the end of the previous year and would be booked in to face Hogan. Taker was in the middle of a heel turn. Maybe Kane but I don't know reception wise how a Jericho vs Kane WWF championship match at MANIA would go over. So in that way Triple H was the best and believable option outside of someone like Hurricane, Booker T, RVD, Eddie Guerrero( actually I don't think he was in the company and was off TV or released by Rumble 2002) pulling an upset victory at the Rumble and Mania
