    Random idea I had. Edge's heel turn did wonders for his career, it wasn't like he was gonna be terrible as a babyface, but for the fans, it was a been there done that type thing. The heel turn gave him new life and showed a depth never seen before, then you add the heat he had from the Matt Hardy incident, he's one of the biggest heels in the company. What did you think of Edge's heel turn in 2004?

      I feel like it was fitting. To me a lightning in a bottle kind of thing, mainly because around this time, the WWE needed talent to either be the face or heel of smackdown and Raw that fans can gravitate to hating or love which will ensure higher viewership/ratings for them. My humble opinion

    • @babarazamsucks
      @babarazamsucks 2 года назад +3

      Well when fans are booing you as a babyface, then it just makes to turn you heel and just lean into it. The love triangle was also going down so it seemed like he was going to turn heel nonetheless. I mean look what happened to Lita then because of what was going on in real life that they had no choice but to turn her heel as well because she was also getting booed out of the building and chanting “You Screwed Matt!”

    • @dxer255
      @dxer255 Год назад +1

      I don't think that love triangle had much effect on Edge's heel run. I agree that the story was wild and all, but Edge would have been on the same level as heel anyways. But sure Adam Copeland at the time did heelish things too lol.

      They basically brought the Smackdown guys to Raw and swapped them out with Booker and RVD in that 04' draft lottery. Benoit, Edge, and Shelton Benjamin (even Tajiri) were Smackdown OGs who had some amazing matches on Raw that year. The three episodes of Raw where they did the draft lottery followed by the two week program of HHH vs Shelton Benjamin was phenomenal. Also, it was fun to see how differently they booked the shows when Raw would go to Canada at that time because they had Trish, Jericho, Christian, Benoit, and Edge. They would pop for Christian and boo the shit out of Shawn Michaels it was hysterical.

    As early as 2001, you could tell Edge was meant to be a future main eventer having broken out into singles competition and winning KOTR. In 2002, he actually got world title shots while Big Show & Brock were champs later that year.
    Now when 2004 hit, that’s when his main event push really officiated. It was one of the most well done heel turns ever. Fans sometimes assume his transition took place at Taboo Tuesday, but it was as early as SummerSlam when fans favored Jericho over him and Edge won the triple threat snatching the belt from the ref( subtle heel mannerism). The heel turn was perfect cause he was justified. He got stripped of the IC title, he didn’t lose it. Felt betrayed for not getting the vote at Taboo Tuesday despite being the healthier & newer challenger, not losing the #1 contender battle Royal and even briefly holding the world title as a mock winner in the triple threat against Benoit & Triple H and having to compete in the chamber to get another show with 3 more opponents and an unfavorable ref.

      not from a lack of trying. he was a upper card guy on SmackDown and top guy on ECW. Same as Christian. Some talent just do not have the it factor needed to be the face of the brand. Hardy was a damn good talent but like his brother could be unprofessional at times. He had some great stuff going for him like V1 Hardy. But he hadn't found that it factor until he left and came up with the broken universe. He hadn't come up with the idea yet.

    I felt Edge being the smiling happy go lucky tag team specialist had really run it's course and it was time for his character to go in a new direction, I really enjoyed the build up to his heel turn, you could tell he was starving to become a main event guy and get his world title shot that he truly felt he deserved.
    Everytime he was close to getting it, something or someone would get in his way and you could tell he was ready to explode at any moment, even his in ring style had changed from crowd pleasing high flyer to a full on violent madman and him spearing HBK at Taboo Tuesday screaming "it should have been me" was the moment Edge truly cemented himself as a monster heel.
    His turn was handled very well and in a way, it reminded me of the same thing that Triple H went through years earlier, he felt he was being held back and taking a backseat to everyone else who was getting opportunities that he felt should have been his.
    Great storytelling and the beginning of perhaps Edge's most dominant run

    • @waynetables6414
      @waynetables6414 2 года назад

      @@cwrisgood That was the time period I stopped watching wrestling, so you're not gonna get any arguments from me that the booking was horrible.. I doubt even if Edge could go back and change that WM card, that he even would.. because he probably loved his match with Mick. Sometimes it's better to be in a featured match than a title match.
      The way they booked late 05 into 2006 ruined wrestling for me completely, don't even get me started with that lol. That was when they lost the audience for the first time in like ten years. They had the crowd in the palm of their hand as a company from like 97-mid 05 and then the crowds started putting themselves over and cheering heels and booing babyfaces and WWE just let it happen. There's no reason they couldn't have just ended the brand split, made HHH and Angle babyfaces, turned Cena heel the same way they turned Rock heel in 99'. (They turned Rock heel just so Austin could have an opponent, Rock was getting cheered before that) Cena was getting booed heavily and they wouldn't turn him.
      I blame the fans as much as I blame WWE at that time, because that was when smarks took over the crowd and started cheering for heels if they were "good workers" and booing babyfaces if someone who's never wrestled a day in his life considered him a "bad worker". "You can't wrestle" chants and shit like that were cringe. Cena needed to be edgy to keep the crowd on his side and he just got more and more goofy so I blame Cena as well. It was just a fucking mess and I haven't even mentioned how bad that Sy Fy ECW show was.. having 3 shows instead of 2 was the death knell because it became quantity over quality. They tried to stay with the brand split but they didn't commit to it and guys just bounced around which made no sense in kayfabe. WWE realized they could churn out content even if it sucked because the money would be the same regardless.
      The crowd was turning on babyface Cena and cheering heel HHH at the same time, so they booked them together and didn't turn either of them. shit was retarded. HHH had been a heel for almost 4 years and fans were dying to cheer him again. He had just put Batista over 3 times and had absolutely zero heat. He had no business in the main event especially as a heel. Angle and HHH were both getting cheered out of respect at that time, which was a bad thing because the fans were cheering for those guys in real life and not their characters because "they can wrestle unlike Cena!". It just showed they were not invested in the characters or storylines whatsoever and fans thought they were smarter than they actually were. Those ECW One Night Stands were great shows in and of themselves, but they hurt the company because it made WWE fans hate WWE.

      @@waynetables6414 I agree 100%. After the 3 straight losses against Batista Triple H should’ve turned babyface and stayed a semi-main eventer. After Mania 21 he should’ve focused on building up the next generation instead of trying to continually pad his World Title stats.

      Seriously, what a terrible return. He was roided up to the gills, he had changed his look (less cool looking tights, covering up his Street Shark tattoo with 'Black Hole Sun'), he seemed to literally sound more robotic, and he was injury prone.The Canadian crowd took a dump on his in-ring return against Kane at Backlash, then they put him with Benoit and made them tag champions to get him over as a face again. He leeched off of that for a while then went back to being on his own when he feuded with Orton in the summer but they cheered heel Orton over him. He started acting more heelish when feuding with Jericho in August and when his hometown crowd booed the fuck out of him at SummerSlam, that was the signal for him needing to turn heel or do something different because as a face, he was failing. He had the groin injury right after that and when he returned to competing, he completed his turn at Taboo Tuesday.
      His heel turn brought the best out of him and the Lita/Matt Hardy scandal couldn't have come at a better time after WM21. He built all the momentum and went on to become the MVP of 2006.
