It's been years in the making, but Derek "the madman" finally did it. He actually found a way to squeeze a title drop for the whole channel into a video.
That deserves some mad props right there.

Interesting thing about the first seven bosses is that they seem to be based off of the seven deadly sins
1st boss- Gluttony- The first boss continually shoves coal into it's "mouth" throughout the whole fight
2nd boss- Sloth- This one is somewhat a weaker association than the other bosses but I think it fits, the boss is based off of a turtle which is often associated with being slow, as well as looking as if it is riding it's lower body like a vehicle
3rd boss- Greed- This is pretty self explanatory
4th boss- Envy- Similar with sloth this association is somewhat weaker but the sin of envy is often associated with the beast Leviathan, which this boss is fairly similar to
5th boss- Pride- This boss is very flamboyant and bright, it's based off of a peacock as well which creates a look that seems very prideful to me
6th boss- Lust- Again somewhat self explanatory, female vampires/succubi have often been associated with lust and temptation
7th boss- Wrath- Out of all the bosses this one especially has a very quick, angry, and destructive moveset, attacking the player like it personally wants to wipe you off the planet with all it's heart

The bunny girls are definitely like the combat maids you find in later Castlevanias. Also surprised you didn't acknowledge Rondo's Death fight for the top of the ship mast. Its 100% a reference to that.

The last level is probably a réference to Gestu Fuuma Den, a classic konami game on Famicom. Iga already referenced it in Harmony of Despair btw.
Also, the city in the ending of nightmare mode is the one from Gunvolt, which is a spirital successor to Megaman Zero developed by Inticreates. It might imply that Zengetsu may be a playable character in the Mighty Gunvolt game.

Just to bring up the odd enemy designs: a lot of them are inspired by demons described in the Ars Goetia, or the Lower Key of Solomon, as well as some nods to the Eldritch Abominations of the Cthulu Mythos and some slightly modern folklore. The only major exception would be the final level of nightmare mode, which is filled with creatures from shinto lore and some stuff.

Derek, Have you played Rondo of Blood? There's a couple of references to that game you missed. For example, the entirety of the Ship level heavily references Rondo of Blood. The Ghost Painting from Rondo was also in the ship level. The way you climb the mast to fight the final boss, and the way you see the silhouette of the boss prior to it approaching from the top of the screen is similar to the way Death appears in that same stage of Rondo of Blood. Not to mention the desperation attacks that every boss uses upon death was also present in Rondo.

    • @WednesdayMan
      @WednesdayMan 6 лет назад +1

Everyone is talking about rondo being underappreciated, if it is underappreciated then Dracula X chronicles is even MORE underappreciated and before you say the graphics suck, that's your opinion, and I respect that, but I like the graphics of the Remake, and it comes with a fully dubbed version of Rondo of blood, if you don't like the dub (I think correct me if I'm wrong) you can switch the language to Japanese, so the PSP rondo of blood remake is the best

I really wish Bloodstained had some of the Rondo of Blood gameplay adjustments with the ability to start momentum in one direction slightly from a stationary jump and letting you get off of stairs while you’re on them. The Maria stuff would be a little too much but the little changes they made to Richter in that game would have been appreciated.

First of all, your channel's name is amazing. I saw this vid in my sidebar recommendations and was like "Eh, I already know everything about Curse of The Moon, I don't need to watch an hour long video about it right now." but the channel name was amusing enough that I begrudgingly clicked anyway.
Good video overall, though I feel you did miss a few things. When you killed Miriam, you didn't show off the jumping arc slash that you get from her in the same way you did when killing Alfred and Gebel and immediately showing off their upgrades. No mention whatsoever during the ship level that it's one giant reference to Ritual of The Night, wherein the ship(the Galleon Minerva) is the intro level that we've known about since as far back as the 2016 E3 demo. Mrs. "just a lady in a tub" is clearly Elizabeth Báthory, the Blood Countess. Or that the second painting enemy which you edited past entirely is Lord IGA himself.

The only disappointing thing about this game IMO is the sound font they used. They really should've used a VRC6 famicom style. Someone on YT rearranged one of the tracks and it's incredible.

I disagree. The way that they did it, this is more faithfull to the old nes music that everyone grew used to, hitting the nostalgia right on the mark.

Richter WLK the goal should've been to make it sound like it was a retro Castlevania game. That would mean utilizing similar sound design and style to the early NES Castlevania games. This doesn't sound like it was made by Konami as they had a very, VERY specific sound to their games.

THERES NO CLOCKTOWER LEVEL??? FUCK YEAH I GOTTA GET THIS GAME NOW.
I love metroidlites and castlevania games but goddamn if the clocktowers arent the most infuriating difficulty spike in gaming history.

Big reference, not sure if you noted, for Solo Zangetsu.
Each of his abilities stem from Zero from Mega Man Zero. The dash, the 'crescent jump slash', the double jump and most important of all, the Ultimate Mode secret, the Charged slash, all big direct references.
And a tiny one only big Mega Man Zero fans would note; if you hold down when you're using the Crescent Slash, it'll stay out indefinitely until you land. Exactly the same as Mega Man Zero.

Did you miss that the music at the file select screen is a tribute to the music from the Symphony of the Night file select screen?
They have the same rhythm and tones, only the pitch seems to have been changed.
I noticed that on my first start of the game. :)

Nice video! A couple more of facts:
1 - the bosses do a final special move before dying, just like in Rondo of Blood. However, this time the final move can't kill you. I think there is a 1up bonus if you manage to avoid such final attack.
2 - the eagles dropping hunchbacks from CV1 appear in stage 4, not in stage 3.
3 - the dragon boss from stage 4 resembles the Twin Zombie Dragon boss from Circle of the Moon. Such game has the same initials, CotM, as this one. Its attack pattern also resembles the Angel Mummy boss from CV II: Belmont's Revenge.
4 - the boat is not only a reference to Rondo of Blood, but to CV III itself. It also resembles Galleon Minerva from B:RotN demo, and both stages even have the same song (Voyage of Promise / Sunder the Night).
5 - The five-legged lion enemy from the library is clearly the Bael enemy from Aria of Sorrow.
That's all I can think of right now, if anyone has any other one please share!

The iron maiden room reminds me of Shinobi III and the brains in the pods, and then the scissor guy reminds me of the first spear boss of the same Shinobi.
I love how I'm just automatically reminded of these minor characters from nostalgic games of my past! The good ol days lol.

Minor thing: love the stage titles akin to Rondo; wouldn't be surprised if "Nocturnal Temptation" references a particular stage either.

30:32 I know I'm extremely late to this, but I wanted to point out the music here. It sounds like a more fleshed out variation of the Alien 3 on NES music (which is just 5 seconds looped incessantly through the whole game). Seriously, listen to them both if you ever see this comment, lol.

Do you think you’ll be doing something like this with the new Bloodstained game? I missed this video when it came out for some reason and I’m just seeing it now - I love all of the info you drop while playing since I grew up on Castlevania. However SotN is perhaps my favorite Castlevania so it’d be awesome to see you do the same thing with that game!
