"Can I get my 1999 game now?" I completely understood this and I utterly agree. One of the most important battles of the previous timeline and there was never a game for it.
I remember when Castlevania games were still coming out regularly (before Lords of Shadow) and there was a ton of speculation about what a 1999 game would be. Still want it. There's so much you can do with it.
Gosh man, i do really desire to have one day that 1999 game now. like, there is still around that fan-game project called umbra of sorrow in which, it'll try to recreate the battle of 99. but still :'(
1999 has been on the table for too long. No game they make could live up to fan expectations. And it's not like Konami will swallow their pride and bring IGA & co. onboard to pen/helm the project either... Best we got is a kinda/sorta/not really a fan game by ThePlotTwist called Umbra of Sorrow, which isn't my cup of tea.
Truth be told, it probably wouldn’t be too much different from Julius mode in Dawn of Sorrow. But I think it’d still be worth seeing- it’s the last battle with Dracula, when he’s at the peak of his power. What forces would he employ? What is the architecture of Castlevania in its (seemingly) final moments?
After playing only about an hour of it earlier in the week, Bloodstained is absolutely gonna make my game of the year list. Glad to say after all these years, I've finally tried a Castlevania game thanks to your videos, Johnny! Now I've just gotta go back to the rest...
I've been watching this guy for around 4 years now, in a week I'm graduating high school, glad to see he's still going strong to many more years of fantastic content Johnny, thank you
It makes sense that Bloodstained is easier than the classics it homages, what with different devs and a different modern audience. Can't just sell the game entirely on pure nintendo hard classic appeal if you want other folks to get introduced into your new series too. But then Nightmare Mode, ignoring allies as Zangetsu-only and other methods can really beef up the difficulty.
Not to mention the old Castlevania's honestly weren't the best designed games out there. I mean that's what Nintendo Hard pretty much is, intentionally poor design to make the game longer. If Curse here is fairly challenging even on higher difficulties, it's probably because it's a better-designed game.
ManOutofTime913 I would disagree for 1 and 3, tbh. A lot of effort went into those games, and it shows; the main problems the game has were mostly intentional on the part of the developers instead. Their Nintendo Hard was a lot better than the average Nintendo Hard.
Haven't managed to beat it without save-states or Alucard cheese. I don't think that's a good sign personally, but I wouldn't say the game is bad or anything.
we ALL want a castlevania game based around the battle of 1999. for those not in the know, in the sorrow series (aria and dawn of sorrow), julius belmont, the belmont of this era has already fought his battles with dracula long before the games opening. not only that, he was the one responsible for the *FINAL* defeat of dracula. what i mean is, in 1999, dracula was prophesied to come back one final time and launch a full-scale war with humanity. julius would go into his castle and seal the castle into the solar eclipse, effectively cutting off draculas immortality and making his death against julius his FINAL one. this was all told in flavor text in the sorrow games, some enemies are even zombified soldiers who fought alongside julius during the battle of 1999. would have been truly a great way to tie up the loose ends, and see julius in his prime.
KelvinBelmont Yep. Responsible for 9 and 10 ( my fav games not counting the trails in the sky trilogy) , Zero and Zx series , gunvolt , mighty gunvolt burst , helped with pirates curse , blaster master , the point is I knew this game was going to be fantastic. My fav 2d game company by far.
Yeah , now if only they would port more of their games on steam. Steam is the only platform for me since its technically the cheapest. Sure I need a good pc but a decent gaming laptop doesn't cost much and can be used for more than just gaming. I don't get how Zangetsu's hatred toward the other characters is jarring. Apart from his personal curse, they're using the power of demons. You know. Demons. Chaotic Evil. Blight on the world? The thing he's been fighting this entire time? Sure, killing them on the spot is an extreme, but I get the point.
I laughed out loud when I read that you could do that and tried it for the first time. It's so mean, just whack them with your sharp stick a few times and they crumple over while you get a shiny new power.
If a murderer was kidnapped and held against their will, they'd still be a murderer. So if one who practices demonic arts is in a bad situation, they're still someone who was practicing demonic arts. As I said, killing them on the spot is extreme but his attitude toward them is understandable.
I never said that any of the captives were murderers. I was making a comparison for my point. Let me break it down then. If someone does something really bad, and then is heavily inconvenienced by something, it doesn't make up for the fact that they still did the really bad thing. The disgust for the person because they did that thing is still going to be there.
I'm beginning to fall in love with Inti Creates. First I play Blaster Master Zero, now I see this. I'm probably the farthest thing from a Castlevania fan, mainly because the theme of vampires and vampire hunters is personally a turnoff for me, but on the other hand, Metroid is my favorite video game franchise. For the gameplay mechanics I just saw, I just might pick up my first Castlevania game here.
The fact that you can kill your allies for Ultimate mode.. THIS is why I love Johnny's reviews. He's like that uncle that shows you neat tricks in your games.
did you notice that curse of the moon is not a prequel but its like an alternate reality or just that ROTN is a remake of curse of the moon , its identical at times

This is probably a really dumb nitpick, but I am not a fan of your intro being as loud as 20 jet engines firing up to full-speed in unison, and then you start talking and it is as quiet as an empty meadow with nary a mouse scurrying among the flowers. Is there a way to work on that audio balance? I'm pretty sure the intro is just... too dang loud by a significant margin. The next part is too quiet but only slightly. It's possible your new kitty kicked up the volume of the intro, but I remember this has been an issue of mine in your videos for months. I've spoken about it before, too, but it may have fallen on deaf ears :(
madrocts You're missing the entire point. I'm an audio technician and I can tell you Johnny (or whoever does the sound mixing and editing for his videos) really needs to start equalizing the audio better. Because jokes aside from Paul W's hyperbolic comparison, it's been an ongoing issue for years now (just go see any older classic Sonic video that features the mantis-skit). Although it has been _much_ better the past year or so, the intro is still too loud (or conversely the rest of the video isn't loud enough). I mean hell, if they wanted to take the lazy way out, they could just up the compression a bit and they could totally get away with that lol. But still, the point stands.
Absolutely thrilled to see and read about all these people having fun who are brand new to the Castlevania/metroidvania universe!! I've either owned and or played every game in the series since the NES days. For those looking for some of the great Castlevania titles of the past, if you can get a hold of any of the GBA and or DS Castlevania titles, those imo are the best. While they don't necessarily look like Curse of the Moon, they imo most closely resemble it in gameplay due to the fact that Curse of the Moon plays a bit more modern than it looks visually.
Ah. I hadn't heard of this until one of your streams. That's really cool that they did this. I barely played any of the Castlevania series back in the day but this definitely looks like it has the hallmarks of it - like they didn't skip a beat. Watching this gave me an "out there" idea. Since there's four playable characters, I'd like to see an old school Final Fantasy take on an adventure - turn-based combat while still having access to subweapons and skils.
I wish every retro inspired game had that "veteran or casual" option that removed the archaic bullshit that games had to have back then. I would have loved Sonic Mania even more if I could disable game overs and insta-death by crushing
I love this game, beat everything 100% trophies but how did I not know about the charged slice from Zangetsu? I don't remember it telling me about that in the moves D:
As a fellow Coffee- and Castlevania Fan, I couldn't agree more with this video! It really felt like I was playing the oldschool Castlevania games for the first time again. Granted, the game's not as hard as say Castlevania 3 but it doesn't have to be. The gameplay, pixel and spritework and the feel overall screams Castlevania and I loved every single part of it! Great video as always Johnny ;)
k,good thing you mentioned about how to unlock ultimate mode, cause I never would of thought of doing that, I was seaching through the levels trying to find some secret items or something
Thank you Johnny for the review. I picked up this game after your recommendation and I gotta say it's very good. Glad I played through it. Need to do a second playthrough but you got me hooked and now I want to try some Castlevania games as well.
Great review! Regarding difficulty, the hardest run in the game is ironically a Normal mode Zangetsu-only run where you ignore every potential ally. This means you don't have any of Zangy's souped up abilities (and no access to that Ultimate-only charged slash) which makes the platforming in later stages HELL. My Steam license runs out shortly, but I'm tempted to give it a go because my dumbass beat Haunted Castle and the Adventure way back when.
man you reviewed this fast yeah I saw somebody stream this and they didn't even know that the main guy could take the other guys powers and it still seemed super fun to me can't wait to try it out
Another backer here,I’m freaking stoked for this mini game man and i also played Bloodstained’s beta which was good as well. This kickstarter is handled so much better than that mighty no.9 kickstarter..
I came back to this review for Halloween induced spooky nostalgia. I sort of miss this era of game development. Lots of excitement about how indies/kickstarter was bringing back old school quality gaming against the enshittification of the AAA side of the industry, possibly causing a course correction. And now here we are, six years later, and the enshittification continues, and it even starts to feel the indie world might not be entirely immune to it.
...wait, you can 'charge' the crescent moon slash? Gha~ If I had known that, I would have a much easier time unlocking Ultimate Mode. Anyway, really enjoyed this video, it was awesome hearing you so energetic in one of your videos again Johnny.
I love how ultimate mode expertly tweaks to difficulty just to make it a little more challenging to have a superpower to zangetsu and the rest of the team
I will say this right now. As someone who's not really into old school style Castlevania games that much, this is the best old school classical style Castlevania alike game I've ever played. It has the right combination of the mechanics, character abilities, level designs, controls and challenge that doesn't feel nearly as frustrating as the NES Castlevania Trilogy nor not as piss easy as Super Castlevania 4. This is the perfect old school style Castlevania game to me. If there ever will be an old school style Castlevania game to return, I hope they take note of this game because this is what it should be.
You can't sleep now, think of all the notifications you're not getting.

Damnit Johnny, I was in the middle of UwU

What game?
i'm taking you to flavor town
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is published by 505.

“^what Konami Can't”
C'mon man, structural integrity is important. You missed an awesome alliteration opportunity.
I did, but I liked Can't-nami more myself.
I'll give you a TWOOO.
Don't you mean a...42?
*puts on shades* YEAAAAAHH

So basically Inti Creates delivers once again

This is the best Casltevania-esque thing I've seen in years. My body is ready.

Curse of the Moon feels like a fairer version of Castlevania 3 and I'm perfectly okay with that.

@@toledochristianmatthew9919 True, I'd give you that. But like most games enemies will start to deal more damage.
@@user-rv9ds8iw6g But most games that do that also allow you to increase your healthbar as the game progresses. Castlevania 3 does not.
What a coincidence that I rewatched all of your Castlevania reviews yesterday

Are you planning on reviewing some of the handheld Castlevania games, especially the later ones like Aria of Sorrow and Order of Ecclesia?
Rixonite If you haven't heard him outright say "No" to a game, then his answer is usually "Eventually."
Sterling Muse He should do a Castlevania maratjon considering there are rumors for a new Castlevania.
Pedro Juan I'm sure he will. But the thing is, there are a TON of OTHER marathons he "should" do. He can only do so many at a time. Hence, eventually.

1999 game? So you too want a game centered on Julius Belmont's final battle with Dracula? In fact, Zangetsu's sprite reminds me of Julius. And the game's title itself seems to be a reference to Circle of the Moon. Please review the GBA games someday! :-)
I'm pretty sure they're referencing 3. Dracula's *Curse* was its subtitle, and that's where the whole "new party members along way" thing came from ;)
I never would’ve played this game without this review. Thank you for helping me find my new favorite “castlevania” game Johnny

It was after 11 in Johnny's own time zone XD
Welp, my point was he uploaded late compared to his other videos but I fucked up with that last bit.
You have sold me.
I will be buying both games!
And that shirt as well!!!
Hey John, ever gonna go back to review LISA?
I would have loved Sonic Mania even more if I could disable game overs and insta-death by crushing
death by crushing isnt an archaic game mechanic though

"Is it me or does-"
"It looks like a hand, does anyone else see a hand, I see a hand."
"...I guess it's not just me"
When's hollow knight?
Great video Johnny. Already saw ErinPlays half of this. Think I have to download it this weekend. Looks like fun. ✌
Who here remembers Graffiti kingdom?
I do! I love Graffiti Kingdom!
That game was the Shit.
Wish it had more attention
I love this game, beat everything 100% trophies but how did I not know about the charged slice from Zangetsu? I don't remember it telling me about that in the moves D:
It never tells you. I found out about it from a friend.
War never changes
Solid Snake according to you snake, war HAS changed.
NOTIFICATION SQUAD!!!
NOTIFICATION SQUADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Just Call Me Lynx INITIALIZE!!!!
DDDDDDDDDDDDD
Please tell me you get that
*skwodd
k,good thing you mentioned about how to unlock ultimate mode, cause I never would of thought of doing that, I was seaching through the levels trying to find some secret items or something
Todays my mother's brithday
1:05 umm... I'm a little confused on the whole "traditional" Metroidvania... Because doesn't Samus returns and Shantae Half genie hero count?
I really don't think we want Konami to make a new Castlevania game. The prosecution presents Metal Gear Survive. The prosecution rests.
Thank you Johnny for the review. I picked up this game after your recommendation and I gotta say it's very good. Glad I played through it. Need to do a second playthrough but you got me hooked and now I want to try some Castlevania games as well.
Love the Clocktower reference with the Scissorman enemy.
Castlevania 1 and 3 were some of my favorites and this looks pretty good too!
Castlevania marathon is back on!!
Good to hear that there are multiple replay routes
I will try to get it once i get a release date on the full game
man you reviewed this fast yeah I saw somebody stream this and they didn't even know that the main guy could take the other guys powers and it still seemed super fun to me can't wait to try it out
Gotta be up early but a Johnny upload comes first always!
What a great night to have a review.
I should've guessed you would do this. It's damn good.
I did not know you could kill the other characters and get their abilities. Learning so much more stuff and I'm loving it!
Another backer here,I’m freaking stoked for this mini game man and i also played Bloodstained’s beta which was good as well. This kickstarter is handled so much better than that mighty no.9 kickstarter..
Man Inti Creates NEEDS more appreciation for the hard work they put into these games.
The charge slash is actually exclusive to ultimate mode.
HOLY SHIT IS THAT A FLCL POSTER IN THE BACKGROUND
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING
I should be asleep, gotta work at 7 am, but now I gotta watch Johnny
Dude, I love your Reviews! Keep making them! Also, are you going to make a Phantasy Star Marathon?
1:51 Wait, it was released for THE Steam? My God.
I played it once thru and had a lot of fun. But I didn’t think of that Zangetsu only run to unlock ultimate mode. Super excited to try that!
I'm loving all these retro style games with modern conveniences coming out lately.
Why RUclips!? You condem me to this hell of missing whenever Johnny uploads
Been looking forward to this for awhile now
I love how ultimate mode expertly tweaks to difficulty just to make it a little more challenging to have a superpower to zangetsu and the rest of the team
Fantastic review, Johnny! You make me want to play this. :)
Whoa, I didn't know you could power up Zangetsu like that, that's awesome.
