The way I figure it is the Old Republic is like the Star Wars equivalent to the Roman Republic / Empire at it's height. The Republic reached its peak until it had it's encounter with the Sith Empire and its successors. This marked the beginning of a long but steady decline caused by the near constant fighting with Sith forces, which in Legends came to near complete collapse of the Republic, leading to a dark age during the New Sith Wars of the Draggulch Period (2000-1000 BBY). By this time it had become necessary for the Jedi to step in and take more direct control to preserve the Republic until the end of the SIth threat, leading to the Ruusan Reformations. Following this, the Republic slowly recovered and began to recover and rediscover lost territory, which then would have lead to the time of the High Republic, an era of new exploration not seen since over 4000 years prior, the equivalent of Earth's Age of Exploration and the Renaissance.
This also helps with what both Palpatine and Sio Bibble say in AOTC Palpatine: “I will not let this Republic that has stood for a thousand years be split in two.” Sio Bibble: “There hasn’t been a full scale war since the formation of the Republic.”

@@becknorland587 Except that's not what happened, and that would only create even more issues. The period between 1000 BBY and 19 BBY is known as the "Republic Golden Age." Though there was slow political stagnation, the actual lives of general people were great, and there was unparalleled peace. The Republic wouldn't just "lose" thousands of planets that are actively colonized and served as major military installations AGAINST the Sith advance.
The issue is that if Disney steps anywhere near the old republic, the legends fans will throw a fit. Look at how they slam the high republic for being a 'replacement' for the old republic despite being set at least 500 years after.
You know, I wonder if most of the Outer Rim was unexplored by the High Republic Era because it all used to be territory of Sith Empires? I mean, maybe the Jedi Order and Galactic Republic initially avoided going into these unexplored regions because of their bad experiences fighting Sith there. According to the Old Republic game, Sith Empires constantly went into hiding after defeats deep into the Outer Rim to rebuild themselves.
Oh the easy Old Republic: Before the Sith started the great dumpster fire that wrecked the galaxy. High Republic: After the galaxy got done rebuilding after said dumpster fire.

Old Republic mmo I even feel is doing it’s own thing and storytelling since it’s legends as well. Sure maybe canon might take some inspiration from it but that’s about it. Maybe story of Revan they might even pull that canon might tell is just one version of many stories about them.
I have just started Ashoka and noticed it the first episode the T6 shuttle has the designation 1-9-7-4. The same year Dave filoni was born! I thought this was a fun Easter egg but not sure if it has been mentioned already as I am severely behind. Love the episode discussion and thank you for having a great channel!
I think the Old Republic Era is still there in the Canon universe since in the wars between the Jedi and Mandalorians were referenced a lot in the Mandalorian show but the High Republic is what we’re currently focusing on. Maybe after the High Republic stories are done, Star Wars would go further back and then we could get the Canon Old Republic stories.
Seems the main difference between Canon and Legends is the Canon New Sith Wars were even more of an apocalyptic shitstorm since the Sith apparently managed to take over.
I've been playing the Old Republic MMO this past year and it's quickly become one of my favourite Star Wars things and eras, enhancing what I already loved from KOTOR but I also love the High Republic era and what it's added to Star Wars as well. Despite all the Old Republic stories being Legends, I actually think the Old and High Republic compliment each other because timeline wise, they are so far apart. THR has made some small references to TOR stuff like kolto, bacta's predecessor, and various Jedi purges in the Order's history but nothing that's overwritten the lore fans love about the previous era. I have no idea if that's been deliberate on the part of the authors but I have appreciated that symmetry. There's even been some High Republic inspired content added to TOR so in a way, it's been mutual. I am excited to see the Old Republic era explored in Canon, it will be interesting to see how it's handled, I hope well enough but personally, I would rather they just take the plunge and dive into it rather than go the route of Dawn of the Jedi, personally I'm weary of that. I like James Mangold, I think he will do well in Star Wars but I prefer the mysticism and the wonder surrounding the Jedi and the Force and how it can be left up to interpretation so putting too concrete a story on how it was discovered and how the Jedi came to be doesn't appeal to me. I am still looking forward but I'd prefer they just go for telling stories in the era, be they brand new or new interpretations of the Legends stories, rather than dragging it out
@@aaronlaughter6471the old republic is literally the only thing I cling onto for Star Wars at this point. As much as I want to there to be 9 movies through the timeline of Revan and Malgus, I do not want Disney even touching it. In legends the old Republic is it's own government and the first Republic in history. In canon the old Republic and the Galactic Republic are same fraction.
I'm really interested seeing how the Old Republic is going to look and feel in the new continuity. Way back in the day, it always bugged me that the original Old Republic fed into the whole "thousands of years ago, everything was the same / even more advanced" fantasy cliche, and I like that they seem to be trying to avoid that with the current conception of galaxy's history.
Funny, because Disney has literally removed the Old Republic... How is it weird that the technology was more advanced than it is now? That's literally every sci-fi universe in existence... Warhammer 40k, Halo, Mass Effect... and no everything was not the same. The Republic had it's own military (the clone wars does not count, it literally lasted for what? 3 years?), the Republic wasn't the only galactic super power either.

Glad to see some optimism around! Honestly they should just recanonise the whole OR at this point. Exar Kun and the og TOTJ storyline is Canon (although archaeologists from the Skywalker period think it is a fable similar to King Arthur IRL), Revan is Canon, Darth Tenebrae (Sith Emperor) is Canon thanks to ROTS, and SWTOR has been referencing Canon/Filoni stuff like Umbara and crossguard sabers. It is so darn obvious.
I mean they have the old republic also Naga shadow is canon. Okay wrong the great sith wars are canon or great sith war is canon but some of what you said is kinda of wrong revan in name. Wrong name that dude is not the emperor even the old republic emperor isn’t even canon. Huh that’s just a fun Easter egg that’s it nothing more
@@bullrun2772 Revan has been named in Canon since at least 2020. A Sith Emperor was mentioned to own a piece of art in Palpatine's office. The Legends version of this unnamed Emperor is Darth Tenebrae, or the Sith Emperor of the Reconstituted Sith Empire.

I have really liked the references to The Old Republic games in some of the books. Its minimal probably because they don't want to mess too much with the characters in those stories. Stuff like Darth Revan being worshipped on Exegol, Luthen having a crystal from the Rakatan Empire, and a number of other small things makes those old stories canon in my book. Plus, they are remaking Knights of the Old Republic!
I was expecting you to talk about the Life Day episode of Young Jedi Adventures since it's Life Day and there's something new to talk about related to the holiday. What a fool I am.
its always been funny too me that fans care that star wars has realistic tech progression. other fantasy series like lord of the rings doesn't have this complaint (atleast surface level) I think canon will probably use the same explanation legends did. the dark age from around 2000 bby that caused technological regression.
@@sebastianoleary2743 i just assumed you wanted realistic tech progression, because TOR and KOTOR are pretty decently distinct aesthetically. Still OT inspired definitely but TOR takes more mcquarrie influence + WOW. And KOTOR is a bit more rustic.
The thing about the old republic era is that there were so many conflicts between the jedi and sith over such a long time that technology just got lost and many resources were used up, after 3000 years of prolonged conflicts, it kindnof makes sense that technology didn't change much, as even if it did it might have been destroyed or the resources needed for it were depleted. Just in the three games you have the mandalorian wars, revan and male's war against the republic, nihilus the sith empire and the Great galactic war the galactic civil war, the eternal empire conquering both the sith and republic, the second great galactic war and another conflict involving mandalorians. Between then and the era of darth bane and the brotherhood of darkness the second great war ended and continuous conflicts happened between the sith and the republic, slowly draining more and more resources.
@Mal-sg6zc There might be people who want it more realistic, but I can only speak for myself. Personally, I think the way TOR was portrayed in Legends was pretty cool, and there are a lot of great stories set in that era. But I also think that it could be a cool idea if the old republic had less developed technology in cannon. It would set the era apart both from the Skywalker era and the old republic in Legends and open up opertunites for different types of stories.
There's also the other out of universe difference Old Republic (set millennia before ANH) is a media arm of lucasfilm being lead by the videogame arm of the company Hugh republic (set centuries before ANH) I'd a media arm of lucasfilm being lead by the publishing arm of lucasfilm. The MMORPG is the main "core" for old Republic content with additional materials (books and comics) being peripheral add-ons. The Novels are the main "core" of the High Republic with additional materials in games and TV shows being the peripheral add-ons.
For Phase 1, you can just read the 3 Adult Novels: Light of the Jedi, The Rising Storm and The Fallen Star for the main story but the YA Novels, MG Novels and Comics add more to the story, but you can just read the 3 main Adult Novels and be just fine
@@andybertaut No worries, also for Phase 2 i would recommend reading the Adult and Young Adult Novels, Path of Deceit > Convergence > Battle of Jedha (Audiobook) > Cataclysm > Path of Vengeance
the difference is the time period they represent. The Republic is ancient. The Old Republic is a term used for the time period of the Republic's creation until 1000 BBY when the Sith was finally defeated. The High Republic was during 500 BBY to 100 BBY. It was the peak of the Republic's power and prosperity. With no wars to worry about, the Jedi and Republic were able to thrive during that time.
hey from the future also it makes sense why the Sith would reemrge after all time going for a tactical approach rather than a direct on as seen from The Acolyte.
Is high republic fun? I've seen some artwork for starlight station as well as some of the ships and jedi: I also love the idea of uber filthy rich fancy jedi, but idk.
yeah its fun. as for what you should start out with you could try Light of the Jedi which is the first High Republic book, it establishes the time peroid and eases you into the political situation of the entire era as well as what threats the Jedi will genrally be facing since the Sith arent available in this era. if you wanna entertain small children then the the Young Jedi Adventures cartoon is a good choice if you wanna get into the comics the Star Wars High Republic Adventures Comic series is a great read, and some of the lore it introduces gives off Kotor vibes.
I personally dont mind KOTOR remake maybe in a gameplay like Amalur or Jedi Survivor. As long as the gameplay is right and its not too overfocused on graphics then all good.
The Old Republic Era was technically the Golden Age of the Sith Order (Game of Thrones-like Conflicts): "Everybody said, 'Oh, well, there was a war between the Jedi and the Sith.' Well, that never happened. That’s just made up by fans or somebody. What really happened is, the Sith ruled the universe for a while, 2,000 years ago. Each Sith has an apprentice, but the problem was, that each Sith Lord got to be powerful. And the Sith Lords would try to kill each other because they all wanted to be the most powerful. So in the end they killed each other off, and there wasn’t anything left. So the idea is that when you have a Sith Lord, and he has an apprentice, the apprentice is always trying to recruit somebody to join him -- because he’s not strong enough, usually -- so that he can kill his master." - George Lucas The Sith destroyed themselves but the Jedi Order ensured the Sith never returned to their former glory, sparking the desire for vengeance against the Jedi and the Republic. In other words, the era should focus on the Sith and internal conflicts between Dark Council members like Darth Marr. However, the first thing they should cover is the Knights of the Old Republic to focus the story on Revan, Bastila Shan, Meetra, Malak, Kreia, Darth Nihilus, and Darth Sion.
Lucasfilm is absolutely terrified to get into the Old Republic in a significantly canonical way, I am 100% convinced of that. Rabid Old Republic fans would only ever accept a straight porting-over of that storyline into official canon, and any deviations will be met with enormous amounts scorn and rage. Such is life when a big chunk of your fanbase thinks it owns the franchise and is entitled enough to wage war against the people that actually own the franchise. So instead, Lucasfilm works with what it can. The slim space between the Old Republic and the Civil War - The High Republic....and really, the 2nd half of the High Republic. It's been pretty solid Star Wars content and I'm interested to see how they connect it directly to the prequel era. Then with Mangold's movie, we once again avoid The Old Republic and will likely spend years in that era before Lucasfilm has to grow a pair and either tackle the Old Republic, or jump far ahead past the Sequel Trilogy and show us what the future is like.
I think the biggest issue is that Kotor revan is not a character, he is just an avatar for the player and whatever they do people will go "that's not the revan I remember"

My favourite thing about High Republic compared to Old Republic is originality. OR is essentially "what if it was republic vs empire but it's all extravagated like warhammer". 90% of it's designs are from originals and prequels with really slightest changes that don't make them look like millennia's apart. Malgus is a cheap knockoff Vader, Imperial soldier is a stormtrooper knockoff, Republic troopers are bareley changed from clones designs, similarities in ships design are not even to discuss, they outright have tie's and venator mixed with isd.
it sounds like you are just referring to the MMO which is fair. But in all fairness TOR feels like its own universe celebrating all of star wars. the rest of the old republic era varies in difference. If you want originality, tales of the jedi (the comic) aesthetically... is very distinct.
@@Lr.Laecro.Lirus3445 Well, I mean in Comparison to the old Extend. The OR had massive wars between Empire and Republic but the HR feels like expansion into the Outer Rim only recently started.
So, is the time in between the High Republic and the Empire the "Republic" or the "Old Republic"? I doubt citizens in the Republic would call it "The Fall of the Jedi" era, especially before Order 66 occurred.
The difference between high and old republic is that the old republic was legendary and the high was between very boring to inactive with maybe some stories of interest or fondness like the era that Disney is working on now, say, probably will be rubbish but has potential to be kinda great and fans may support it if they do it right
Who doesn’t Disney just deem the Kotor games canon? They did this with TCW 2008 series which was also part of Legends, also Kotor is set around 4,000bby so I don’t see it contradicting anything that the new canon has done.
They focus on the movies and TV shows (since The Clone Wars) as canon, Star Wars originated as a movie franchise. Video games aren’t technically canon since they do conflict stuff what has been established in the movies and TV series. Plus, Attack of the Clones and The Clone Wars did conflicted stuff that was established from video games like Jedi Order forbids any Jedi pre-Order 66 to fall in love with anyone and attachments in the movies while Old Republic games had not forbids attachments, Ahsoka is technically the first apprentice to Anakin’s life and adding Ahsoka in to The Clone Wars series did conflict stuff like the old Clone Wars games before Dave Filoni made the Canon version of The Clone Wars, etc.
@@HenryLouis21 Thats why people disregard HR If the new continuity cant build something interesting on the foundations that have already been built then it feels like theres no point getting into it if thats how it will work Would you care about a sequel to a book you love if the "sequel" completely ignores and even changes what came before?
So, Ben should have said, "the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times, before the High Republic, before the fall of the Jedi."? Or does the Old Republic include the High Republic and the Fall of the Jedi?
Ben was never referencing the old republic era when he said that, he basically means the republic before order 66, he quite literally follows up that with "before the dark times before the empire" when the eu old republic itself was a very dark time itself

You know, I wonder if most of the Outer Rim was unexplored by the High Republic Era because it all used to be territory of Sith Empires? According to the Old Republic game, Sith Empires constantly went into hiding after defeats deep into the Outer Rim to rebuild themselves.

Old Republic mmo I even feel is doing it’s own thing and storytelling since it’s legends as well. Sure maybe canon might take some inspiration from it but that’s about it. Maybe story of Revan they might even pull that canon might tell is just one version of many stories about them.

I am still looking forward but I'd prefer they just go for telling stories in the era, be they brand new or new interpretations of the Legends stories, rather than dragging it out
Wait what High Republic inspired stuff is in SWTOR?

I like the idea of the Old Republic feeling more ancient now. The games made things look too similar to the prequels and got too big. IMO
its always been funny too me that fans care that star wars has realistic tech progression. other fantasy series like lord of the rings doesn't have this complaint (atleast surface level)
I think canon will probably use the same explanation legends did. the dark age from around 2000 bby that caused technological regression.
@Mal-sg6zc I don't care if the development of technology is realistic. I just want the different eras to feel different

Hugh republic (set centuries before ANH) I'd a media arm of lucasfilm being lead by the publishing arm of lucasfilm.
The MMORPG is the main "core" for old Republic content with additional materials (books and comics) being peripheral add-ons.
The Novels are the main "core" of the High Republic with additional materials in games and TV shows being the peripheral add-ons.

the difference is the time period they represent.

The best starting place for The High Republic is the novel Star Wars: Light of the Jedi.
yeah its fun.
as for what you should start out with you could try Light of the Jedi which is the first High Republic book, it establishes the time peroid and eases you into the political situation of the entire era as well as what threats the Jedi will genrally be facing since the Sith arent available in this era.
if you wanna entertain small children then the the Young Jedi Adventures cartoon is a good choice
if you wanna get into the comics the Star Wars High Republic Adventures Comic series is a great read, and some of the lore it introduces gives off Kotor vibes.
I personally dont mind KOTOR remake maybe in a gameplay like Amalur or Jedi Survivor. As long as the gameplay is right and its not too overfocused on graphics then all good.
The Old Republic Era was technically the Golden Age of the Sith Order (Game of Thrones-like Conflicts):
"Everybody said, 'Oh, well, there was a war between the Jedi and the Sith.' Well, that never happened. So the idea is that when you have a Sith Lord, and he has an apprentice, the apprentice is always trying to recruit somebody to join him -- because he’s not strong enough, usually -- so that he can kill his master." - George Lucas
The Sith destroyed themselves but the Jedi Order ensured the Sith never returned to their former glory, sparking the desire for vengeance against the Jedi and the Republic.
I kinda of some disagreements here but still great video
So much for the "High Republic".
It’s sad that knight of the old republic remade got canceled
It's still in development, it was just delayed.
This is very true.
I think the biggest issue is that Kotor revan is not a character, he is just an avatar for the player and whatever they do people will go "that's not the revan I remember"
@@corruptpixel8441 This is absolutely a huge part of the challenge that LFL faces.
That sounds extremely dismissive of SWTOR. Its a pretty great game despite the more familiar aesthetic.
