Why Lightsabers Became Less Ornate After the High Republic

  • Jedi lightsabers of the High Republic were far more ceremonial and fancy than the lightsabers we're used to seeing in the Star Wars films. Why is that? What caused the change to a more simplified version of the weapon?

    I also think sabers without a guard were not supposed to be needed, because the guard is used for saber-to-saber combat to protect (guard) the hand when the blade slides. Hence they continued using it because they needed mostly to deflect laser shots due they thought Sith were extinct.

    I mean, back when European military officers carried sabers, they were expected to have two. One for ceremonies and one for battle.
    It would make sense for a Jedi to have two, except for the fact that by the time of the Prequels the Jedi don't really have a formal dress. Like monks, they just wear their plain brown robes everywhere, both to public ceremonies and when trying to go unnoticed...

    • @CDKohmy

      On the history, that wasn't always the case. Some units required 2 swords like that such as the British heavy cavalry circa 1796. Most were expected to use just the one regulation sword, but chose to have two for that reason such as British troops in India or naval officers and using a ship's cutlass. In fact, some regiments were given modular swords where the hilt differed for ceremony vs war such as a later update to the 1828 Highland officer's sword.

    Guardian Protocols also being the reason the sabers begin looking more like practical tools instead of ornate artifacts makes a whole lot of sense. Amusingly, because of our greater familiarity with the standard flavor, some might say that’s a good thing. Seen some saying how the HR sabers look like knockoffs or over the top.
    Nowhere is that more exemplified with the legacy Stellan Gios lightsaber announcement, with one comment even saying his saber looks like a Power Rangers knockoff.

    Not only do I love this explanation but it makes me wonder two things. One if this explains emperor palpatine's own personal electrum lightsabers, which while in the same design is battle sabers are way more ornate maybe hinting that he came during the end of the high Republic era, or at least has a fondness because he literally brings on a sith golden age through the empire. Thing that makes me wonder, especially looking at Ray's final saber from the rise of Skywalker is maybe during her new movie and possibly a sequel to the sequel trilogy. We might see these sort of ornate lightsaber designs begin to return again?

    This adds some interesting context to the “clan” sabers seen in the prequel where most extras and named characters had sabers that were identical or variations of three or four designs. Interesting to see the parallels between the necessity of a movie production needing mass produced props and the in-universe need for mass produced lightsabers.

    I really enjoyed this new bit of lore about the Jedi. I like that the changes made to the Order was something done for practical reasons and not hubris or something like that. It was I was worried about how they would handle that but I was very pleased with this explanation.
    It makes so much sense in hindsight, sacrificing elegance, style and flair for functionality and easy maintenance and repairs. I had actually never considered it the whole time during the run of the High Republic but yeah, the more elaborate, ornate and stylish sabers with high end materials and components would probably be more difficult to maintain than more simple designs. They were mostly used for ceremonial purposes up until that point, they still saw their fair share of use in battle and on missions but probably not so much to wear down the sabers all that much.
    I actually thought it was a really creative way to explain the change in the style of the Jedi and their lightsabers between the High Republic and the prequels. It also doesn't take away from the ceremony of lightsaber construction. The sabers still remain very much a reflection of the Jedi who constructed them, that remains intact and those ornate materials and components are still available to Jedi to use if they liked to as we see with Huyang in The Clone Wars and some sabers in the prequels have gold and other fancy materials in their hilts. Most probably just chose to be practical in their construction. I think that makes perfect sense.

    • @Ecokiz
      @Ecokiz Год назад +2

      I mean I personally really disliked all the ornate designs. I think had I been a Jedi during the High Republic era, my lightsabers would have been much closer to the prequel ones. Ahsoka’s lightsabers are beautiful and they are nowhere as ornate as the High Republic ones. The whole concept of the Jedi having a ‘golden age’ just feels weird in general because no Jedi character would ever consider one time period better than another, in fact that would be something which would go against a lot of their philosophy. Especially because the Jedi would be fully aware that golden ages ultimately aren’t all that golden. The 1920s were considered a golden age in the US but if you were to ask African-Americans I’m sure they would dispute that label, particularly those living in Southern states.

(Which by the way the Jedi didn’t fall; they were hunted to extinction in a genocidal campaign that began with a massacre, the victims of which had their bodies desecrated including the children who were murdered). Every single group in history has undergone countless cultural shifts across their existence, plenty of which are still around and those that aren’t is because they were destroyed by colonial powers. More than that this is ultimately just a design shift and those happen even more often than cultural ones.

      @@KalaamNozalys no they didn’t, that goes in direct opposition to what Lucas has said in every single one of his interviews; the plot of Episode I is them helping liberate an planet occupied by an invading force who were placing the population into labour camps. That doesn’t sound like losing their way to me. Now TCW did address how the clone wars was making them lose their way but that was in a war which Sidious specifically designed to push the Jedi to beyond the brink and even then we see the Jedi always duck out of dealing with politics like they’re supposed to given they’re not elected officials. We also have Tarkin complain the Jedi weren’t going far enough to get victory with Anakin Skywalker agreeing with him. And speaking of Anakin, the Jedi ultimately lost because he spent the whole of Episode III shutting everyone out, even Padme, and ultimately choose to give into his worst self enabling Sidious to activate Order 66 and force the clones to kill the Jedi, something that wouldn’t have happened had Anakin killed him. Besides you say they lost, but did they? Way too much unnecessary suffering and way too many atrocities happened as a result of Anakin’s choice, but the Sith did get destroyed. Ultimately the Jedi won, not lost.

And we see the Jedi don’t want to get involved in politics either; to quote a Mace Windu line directly from TCW: “I’ll leave the politics to you, Senator.”
