I just got back from the AACC conference this year. Funny that this popped up in the algorithm. there are a lot of different takes why the audience laughed. And I think each person may have laughed for their own and multiple reasons. Yes, we are exhausted, it is A LOT to take in. I don't doubt people were loopy and sleep-deprived and burnt out. And sometimes there are comedians and funny speakers in the line-up. My take is that at the start his facial expressions are incongruent. He starts the first 40 seconds self-deprecating humorously but switches to serious with a bit of a frown but continues to self-deprecate and half smile. Another reaction , and this is mine, is that many know John Piper and the worm theology and self-flagellating feel of his messages and the laughter is a way of saying Bro, you don't have to crucify yourself and take yourself so seriously. Lighten up, laugh a little. Give yourself some grace and rest in God's forgiveness. At worst it came across as manipulative and insincere. For him this may be a very vulnerable moment and uncharted territory in his circles but for counselors, we hear this every day all day. 2:02 - 2:26 was genuinely sad. His worst fears were realized.
Well put, always seems weird when a preacher drones on deep diving their weaknesses. Comes off as self absorbed in a self flagellating way. It was like he was overthinking his audience and trying to stay three steps ahead of their ‘psychoanalysis’. He even said at the end he was trying to get them to receive his message. It’s like bro, just share the message, God causes the growth.
I enjoyed this immensely...his openess and vulnerability were oddly refreshing. I hope despite everything that's going on with him God will give him reassurance and love and plenty of genuine laughter in his life, Amen ♥️🙏
This is tremendous, Piper shows he understands the psychology of counseling and the psychology of the fallen human species. It was a very clever and insightful talk while being transparent about being the chief of sinners. I love it.
Reminds me of a twilight zone episode - when a comedian was crying and begging the audience to stop laughing at him in his routine. Every time he did that, they guffawed harder. This is exactly the same...
I listened to an interview ten years after this event with Pastor John and he was asked about this. I had hoped the organizers would have explained or apologized. Sadly, no. Ten years later he doesn't know why they laughed at him.
I legitimately thought this was fake, that a laugh track was added until he mentioned the laughing towards the end. I’m in disbelief, the moment was completely lost on them.
@@dylantodd6009 John Piper had to go through christian counselling marriage for him and his wife, and one of his sons left the faith. I think Jeandeaux comments is too real and close to home to be honest.
Odd that he started off his sermon with feeling that his audience's perception of "reading" him was above average because they were Christian counselors and soon discovered their perception was very below that of typical audiences. There is something to learn here...

I appreciated this honesty from a man I rarely see in that light. If leaders were all more open with their weaknesses, how much healthier would the church be? It's how you can be a genuine servant, and also how to not become a pharisee.
@@josephbolognone6014 I don't agree, Joseph. Looking at the title I assumed it was clickbait and Piper was being genuinely humorous, but watching the video changed my mind. There's no doubt by the end that he was pleading with them to take seriously the convictions that "make him cry," and the audience isn't getting it.
@@BooRadleyTube I feel like a lot of that comes from modern day churches. The pastor often starts off the sermon with like a joke, and then gets into a story about his life that eventually ties into a sermon (not always bad, but it is bad if that happens every single Sunday). It happens so often that that's what people are expecting when someone goes up to preach, but that's just a modern idea that's setup to keep the audience intact. If you look at the sermon on the mount, Jesus didn't start with some joke. Assuming the sermon is a word-for-word transcription. Even if it was just the general idea, Jesus jumped right into the deep end of the topics at hand, not some humorous story to get the audience laughing. Anyway, that's my two cents.
It’s interesting that I listen to John in this situation and all I can think about is how these are things that I struggle with at 28 years old. a guy like John piper confesses and talks about these things in the open to so many people and it encourages me and blesses me and I feel humbled and broken. I Want change in my life and the need to see Christ as king and all these people can do is laugh?
I was in Pastor Piper's congregation for some years. He is a totally sincere and humble man and I still learn from and greatly admire him. There is no deadpan here, he is telling it like it is. The vast majority of the laughing is as confusing to me as it appeared it was to him. He is an authoritative and learned man, strongly driven by the Holy Spirit. I love this man, I thank Lord Jesus for this man, may God continue to bless him and his family. While it may seem awkward, I believe the audience loves him and feels they are laughing with him, but I find it odd they were so free at it when he didn't laugh with them. He would often have that look on his face when congregants would laugh or clap out of place, when it really wasn't entirely appropriate. God's blessings to those who are saved, and those who will be saved.
You couldn’t see the humor in his delivery? Piper even provided clear evidence through his very words that he is not empathetic in general. No human can ever “live up” to these “generals of the cloth” and their “righteous ramblings” as inspirational as they may come across. We are all God Damned sinners. This is the funniest shit I've seen in a while. The schedule mixup where the crowd thinks he's a comedian, how his delivery and pauses could be interpreted as some ironic comedic act, the rising confusion he gets from getting laughter after each thing he reveals about himself, the slow and dry buildup to the 'punchlines', and every time he doubles down on being serious, the crowd equally reflects it with more laughter. What a gem.
Since nobody else can figure it out, the reason people were laughing was because of his inflections, as in the meter of his speech. He naturally talks in a way a person would when they're letting on that they're teasing. I would have been laughing too!
Not at all. The agenda listed his time slot as a comedy routine by mistake. It’s sad to me that these people can’t discern the difference from comedy and what he is saying.
@@PJErvin That is the irony, he was praising them for their discernment and perceptiveness, yet they weren't discerning that he wasn't joking. He was being vulnerable.

It was a misunderstanding. A comedian was scheduled to be up during this time slot but it got switched around, and the audience was primed to laugh at what the speaker at the time would be saying. No one knew what was going on until it was too late and he’d already given his sermon
I know you mean well, but it’s sad how people are so quick to judge without getting the full context of a story. This pastor had his time slot switched last minute with a comedian so the audience thought he was a comedian doing a dead-pan routine.
Love this man and love this crowd. Simple and harmless misunderstanding. The crowd is not laughing at him at all but with true joy. His is a righteous seriousness, and theirs is an equally respectful and honorable laughter, simply a rapidly flowing stream which briefly flowed into two parallel tracks

I was not a huge fan of Piper for no real reason but as I see more of him and read his books, I can feel his deep love for God and his genuine desire for others to feel the same.
Profound. Wonderful that he was willing to be vulnerable. Good lesson for the counselors for working with pastors. Because we tend to think they "shouldn't" need help. But, remember, all of God's servants had at least one person they could talk to at a deeper level.
He may have been on point but he was being vulnerable and honest with them about his shortcomings as a Christian and a husband. I applaud him for his honesty and humility, I wish I had half the courage to be as open, honest and vulnerable in front of a crowd so large. God bless you John, thank you for your sincere example.
@@bean7496 I couldn't believe he was until he sounded offended towards the end. But he seriously sounded like he was joking. I think that's what the audience thought too.
There is an *extremely important* side story to this that for some reason, the poster of this video did not mention. John Piper was doing this speech at a conference with *multiple* speakers. There was an _actual comedian_ who was scheduled to give his performance during this particular time slot. All of this was on the agenda, so people who attended were _expecting_ to see a comedian at this particular time. But due to a scheduling conflict, the comedian asked to have his time slot switched and the event promoter said fine, so they switched the comedian's time slot with John's. The problem is that they never informed the audience of this switch, so when the time came for the comedian to come on stage, it was actually John Piper but no MC came on to let the crowd know. So the crowd wasn't actually being rude or disrespectful, they genuinely thought that he was a comedian.
As a counselor in training I find this funny yet heartfelt - his words are honest, his awareness of his audience (they demand vulnerability) delightful and his motives (display openness) sincere, but his delivery is more detached (self-deprecating awareness) and lacking affect (not emotionally vulnerable) which makes it ironic (the discrepancy between words and emotionality), and considering they are in an open audience venue and not a private counseling room, plus the comedic timing, it is ultimately read as funny. Still appreciated everything he said, though, and the audience did, too. The laughter was definitely meant to be encouraging. Had he said this on his own with one counselor he would've probably been encouraged to freely explore the feelings attached to the words he was saying. They're counselors! Also, we counselors are indeed a strange bunch!
You've both got it wrong, context : ruclips.net/video/NrqvHi6VuSc/видео.html But the laughter is ironic, because as an ex-catholic, I know how much a joke religion is.
If you have any experience as a Christian counselor, if you have any skills at all to hear and help people in trouble, or ability to be honest about the human condition then you KNOW people are sinners. For someone to tell you that they are a sinner is not a revelation. To think that it is a revelation greatly underestimates your audience. No doubt, brother Piper was earnestly admitting his struggles, but of course they thought it was a joke. What would a car dealer do if you said, "I'm sure you will find some way to swindle me," or to a doctor, "I guess you are assuming that I'm sick," or to a teacher, "I suppose you want me to learn something"? Naturally, they could get offended, but if they were open hearted, humble and gave you the benefit of the doubt they would probably laugh at your endearing transparency. They also laughed when he criticized them as a "very strange audience" and cheered when tried to turn it around and say he was trying to be serious. I don't see any maliciousness or offense on either end.

I believe it was the way he delivered the talk while occasionally smiling, that gave the counsellors permission to laugh.

In the audience's defences, his speech did come across as deadpan humor when taken out of context
And adding context doesn’t really change much either...
That's exactly how I took it, "humor". Most of these comments had to be made at the title of the video and not actually watching it.
@@josephbolognone6014 I don't agree, Joseph. Looking at the title I assumed it was clickbait and Piper was being genuinely humorous, but watching the video changed my mind. There's no doubt by the end that he was pleading with them to take seriously the convictions that "make him cry," and the audience isn't getting it.
how much more context do they need? One of the most renowned serious speakers on the planet came to speak at their conference.
Excellent, honest, timely humor. Much appreciated.

You've both got it wrong, context : ruclips.net/video/NrqvHi6VuSc/видео.html
But the laughter is ironic, because as an ex-catholic, I know how much a joke religion is.
I have so much love for JP!
