He was a very personable person. I lived on 115th Street between ***7th and 8th Avenue in Harlem and his sister Barbara lived on the block. He was always coming to the block and if you saw Barbara, you oftentimes saw "Peanut", his daughter, with her. He would hang out on the stoop with everybody all day long. He never came in a car or with anybody. He always took the subway to and from 116th Street and 8th Avenue. ***7th and 8th Avenue is also known as Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard and Frederick Douglas Boulevard, respectively.

Hi Lamont , my husband of 33 years , and I ,incorporated the first stanza of “ Stand By Me” in our wedding invitations and as well as our first dance song. We were older and I had been married before so it was very meaningful to us. Love watching both your channels.
For me I choose any 50's group over the Beatles, monkeys etc Their songs always brings memories I remember the Drifters, temptations and many more groups that their music is still heard today.
Beautiful voices beautiful Melody beautiful beats and using everything is so well grounded together The perfect blend real musicians who actually played instruments and could really sing
Really good one, Lamont. I love all those songs he sang including "Spanish Harlem". Beautiful song. I didn't really know anything about Ben E. King but now I do & it's because of you. Thanks.
One of my favorite oldies bands. They are what made ppl make babies. I personally think the drifters, temptations, four tops, Percy, ottis, are way better and more talented than the old rock bands
Loved this blog brought back memories of my teens.😀... As always Lamont. You're by far one of the best informative story teller out here. Keep up the excellent work. Be safe...

I've seen interviews of Mr. Ben E. King before he passed even when he was younger. In the 80s and 90s he gave interviews . He has a nice headstone. I loved the Drifters also.

I love The Drifters! Loved Ben E. King! Stand By Me is a favorite🎶🎶 I saw a version of The Drifters and The Platters. I think it was Bill Pinkney, but I'm not sure. Spanish Harlem is one of my favorites as well

So Darling Darling Stand By Me, Oh Stand By Me, Stand By Me, Stand By Me!!🎶💞, Wow Lamont u must be psychic because I was thinking of Ben E when I saw ur Teddy Pendergrass video and u was talking about list ur favorite male singer with great voice's and on comments I mentioned Ben E King, this song be stuck in my head sometimes, I love this song Stand By Me and I'm a 80s baby, thank U Lamont At Large for going to his grave, I knew he passed away but I thought more recent but a little while ago 2015, RIP Ben E King the Legend 🙏💐🎶
All great songs that you mentioned. You are correct about 50 or so "drifters" over these many years. I met one of them who was dating a friend of mine for a couple of years in the late 2018 time frame. I forget his name but he was still performing solo at a night club and restaurant in San Pedro, CA. They broke up and I assume with the pandemic that performing stopped.
My favorite song he did is ‘ 7 Letters’. I woke up several mornings ago basically singing this song. Almost a week now and I can’t get this song out of my head. Funny that I just came upon this video about him. Wow! This just added more fuel to the fire so, I guess I’ll be singing 7 Letters for a long time! 🥰❤️🙏🏾
How could you not mention THERE GOES MY BABY.? I'm 70 watch all your videos. Only saddened by you not mentioned one of the greatest songs in OLDIES BUT GOODIES.
Stand by me is my ABSOLUTE favorite song from them!!!! ❤️❤️ I legit just started singing it hahaha “The Temptations” are also one of my other favorite singing groups! I love the movie too!!
I couldn't help but notice there is an infant buried with him 4 years after his death. The name is on the bottom right corner of the stone. "Jaxson Brin? Cannon-Velazquez May 8, 2019-June 8, 2019 Beloved Son"
Grew up in Clw, FL. Dad listened to oldies radio in the morning. I was 12 in 1987 and won my first tickets off the radio to see Ben E King. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to go with my dad. His horrible hooker girlfriend at the time was insanely jealous of anytime my dad spent with me or my brother. (One of many life horrors turned to life lessons, yadda yadda) So the witch took me instead. It would of been a better memory for me if I had the escort I wanted that night. Many years later, Stand By Me was the song my dad and I danced to at my last wedding and will always be our song. Thank you for showing the grave of the man that sings the song that makes me cry every time. ❤️
I've heard of him. Lot times late at night they do songs and the only one I know is stand by me. I've seen the video on GPTV. When they are raising money. That's when I see a lot of groups and see videos from all ears. He was much younger in the video. I do like the song. 👍✌🙌🙂👋. Neita James.
My lovely wife and I took a cruise aboard the Caribbean ship Song of America in 1991. One of the Platters singers was aboard giving entertainment in the lounges.

I remember he once said in during a interview later that if is wasn't for that song he'll be driving a cab.
Thank you ,@Char Dizz
Isn't this wonderful song was sang by the Kingdom Choir at Harry and Meghan's wedding?

What about Clyde McPhatter, who is one of the greatest Drifters lead singer. Of course including the great Ben E. King.
One drifter at a time sir 👍

People don't sing like that anymore, they were singing back in the day, I don't understand these groups of today!
Loved this voice, he was a fave of my mom's. She loved "Stand By Me." I love "Spanish Harlem". RIP Mr. King.
Never understand how you could fall out of love with R&B! 🙏♥️💕
Keep in mind the Motown Sound was sort of edging out traditional R&B at that time as well. Elvis and groups like the Drifters were “old news”.
I liked his lead voice, on he and The Drifters, recording of, "There Goes My Baby" (1959).
So darlin, darlin, stand by me! RIP BEN E KING ❤️LEGEND❤️
For me I choose any 50's group over the Beatles, monkeys etc

As a longtime vinyl collector, I have seen so many 45s by the Drifters over the yrs. They sold a LOT of 45s. An example of how popular they were.
It was just couple weeks ago a man here in downtown Cleveland was singing Stand By Me such a classic by the Great Ben E. King!!🎶🎶
3:58 RIP Michael Nesmith, Davy Jones and Peter Tork (The Monkees)
The only drifters i know are the people who race their cars and slide them on corners 🤷♂️

In 1979 Ben.E King made a come back into the disco Era with a song called Music Trance...
How can you leave out Clyde "LOVER PLEASE" McPhatter?
The 80s also had a British invasion in the music industry. Groups like Boy George, Pet shop boys and Bananarama we're kinda big back then.
