    I love this. My mentality exactly.
    We are of the " It's just another day " tribe. I'm just doing laundry and cleaning floors tonight, listening to the fireworks that are no doubt scaring the shit out of the local wildlife.
    Some years ago some silly little female coworker was going on about New Year's resolutions and I said " Why wait? If you want to do it, just do it " . I got the looks like I had a horn growing out of my head.
    And to the working members of this tribe - Happy Extra Day Off.

    I use New Years for accounting. My husband and I have a "state of the family" kind of review. No resolutions for sure!

  • @brandonlee1163
    @brandonlee1163 9 месяцев назад +7

    I think this is the first video you've made where I mostly disagree with you. Some people need a perceived external change to knock them out of a bad habit/routine or into a good one. Sometimes that change is a pandemic, other times it's just the start of a new year. For a lot of people, I think New Year's represents a cue to look back on what they've been doing and how they're going to improve it (hopefully within their own definition of "improve," and not someone else's). Even the people who want to plaster their New Year's Resolutions all over social media have something to gain from doing so. A lot of those people are very insecure, as you astutely pointed out. They're pretty beholden to what they think other people think of them. So, by putting their resolutions out there for their friends and followers to see, they're creating a consequence for themselves if they don't follow through with their resolution(s): the judgement of their social media following.
    All I'm saying is, I don't think New Year's Resolutions are stupid or particularly woo-woo. The new year represents a sort of wake-up call for a lot of people who are hypnotized by the exhausting slog of day-to-day existence. I think we should encourage people who make New Year's Resolutions. Of course, I do agree that a New Year's Resolution is incredibly stupid if you don't follow through with it. I think it's easy to be dismissive of New Year's Resolutions when you observe the staggering number of people out there who have no follow-through. Just my unsolicited two cents.

    • @seltzermint5
      @seltzermint5 9 месяцев назад +1

      I feel pretty similarly to this as well. I think for SOME people, it's the perfect time to make positive changes with a "new" year and the stressful, hectic holidays over. But I also think the number of people who just make NYR because it's "what you do" is a much higher number and therefore less likely to actually result in positive change.

    I never share mine "publicly" but they are always doable, realistic goals like taking better care of my sweaters (lol) or recording all the books I read in a journal with notes and color coding, things that are fun and I do keep up with them. • @IndigoPuma
    @IndigoPuma 9 месяцев назад +3

    I expect plans and good habits to fall apart as the year progresses, so I like the psychological aspect of the New Year as a kind of reset (I gotta go with whatever motivation works for my brain).
    I spend the first half of January figuring out plans for my goals, then in the second half, I do a 'warm up' to the new habits--this lets me figure out what works, what doesn't, and what I need to tweak. Then, start of February, I hit the 'hard reset' and spend at least four weeks going hard on good habits and breaking bad ones, and it's quite effective. I try to keep going until Easter, but if I'm starting to crack, I'll go back to a milder 'holding position' (rather than crashing back into terrible habits) as a break.
    Sometimes I'll find other dates in the year to do this cycle again, just as a healthy reset: plan, warm up, hard reset, then back to 'holding pattern'. It's important to figure out what works for your own psychology. And I agree that to be properly motivated, it has to be something that matters enough to you. If you're on board with the 'why', it's easier to keep going.
    Maybe the most important aspect for me is to understand that my plans WILL FALL APART at some point; it's a case of just going for as long as I can, then taking a break from it, then warming up and doing it again. No guilt, no failure, just being human, and still making progress. I've done this cycle multiple times and it works for me.

    If you are going to set new year's resolutions, it also makes sense to evaluate the progress of your life over the past year, reflect on whether you accomplished your goals, and if not, what went wrong, and adjust your approach for the next year. If you approach them this way, I think new year's resolutions can actually work well, as an addition to living intentionally and setting new goals whenever it makes sense to.

    This is somewhat depressing coming from a Canadian. My relatives were forced of their land to make way for sheep during the white on white violence 🤣that was the Highland clearances. Most of them ended up in North America including Canada.
    The tradition of New Year (Hogmanay) was and is held dear by the Scots. It is the turning of a page, yes, but in those days, it was the hope of better. The tall, dark stranger 'First footin' on Hogmanay, with a lump of coal and a dram of whisky to celebrate the hope of better times the next year. We opened the windows to 'let the old year oot and the new yin in'. Singing and dancing was my memories of those new years. We didn't have what you have. We eat hachett pie (steak pie) at midnight. That would be the last meat we would see for a long while. Tradition is lost now in a time of plenty and that's great. I hope you never feel the hunger we did. I sigh you will never feel the warmth of a real New Year. Lang may your lumb reek!

    Instead of it being some stupid New Years thing, it's a habit I am trying to form.

    At the fitness places I've belonged to, sometimes you can't find a parking spot in January, going into early Feb. And the employees there go nuts giving tours, signing people up, etc. But by Valentine's Day, it's back to normal with all the regular people like always. But this year I will try a "Dry January" only because I drank more than I should have in Dec.

    I've never made a New Year's resolution but I can say the New Year's Eve of 2020 I quit smoking, I didn't tell myself I was going to, I didn't have any plans to quit, I just did. It just happened to fall on the New Year's Eve of 2020 the best year ever (sarcasm). I did start up a new bad habit that was the lozenges, they got me through the tough times. I did quot them finally. 3 years later random date.

    What is woo woo about affirmations? Science has shown time and time again that what you say to yourself and others consistently has a profound impact on self-esteem, life choices, motivation, and success. An affirmation is nothing more than something you tell yourself consistently, and again, science has shown that what you say to yourself consistently has a measurable effect on outcomes in numerous areas of life...

    New Year's Day is just another reset day, like Sunday, the first of the month, or the first day of a season. You fail, you reset. Can't say that I know people who go around broadcasting new year's resolutions. That seems juvenile.

    New Year’s Eve is a perpetual amateur hour. It’s a bullshit holiday for adults that feed into Christmas and are so freaking depressed because it’s over, so we lend them another day to carry on with their partying and shopping sprees. The idea of making resolutions for New Year’s is crap too, as if a new year is going to bring about a slew of sudden major changes that couldn’t happen in the middle of freaking July. New Year’s Eve equals more bullshite, more self delusion, more gross consumerism, more alcohol consumption. Oh yes, and let’s not forget amateur our fireworks. The epitome of selfishness and self entitlement. People are not content to have a quiet restful night. No, we have to use explosives to pretend that we’re excited about something. Maybe these folks should go over to Gaza where they can get all the fireworks they would ever want.

    I can’t rely on this new year resolutions thing. I get kinda paralyzed (as in can’t continue) when I make huge changes since I’m autistic. So I’m always doing small changes to get closer to whatever I want to achieve. It’s less overwhelming and let’s you build the kind of habit that if you miss one day or even a week because you got sick or anything, it’s fine, you just continue as soon as you recovered ☺️

    I agree. If I want to improve myself I will start any time. Why wait until january? But spring is a good time to buy slightly used exercise equipment or bikes. After everyone realizes they aren't gonna keep their resolutions.

    New Year Resolutions are a stupid idea. There’s a lot of things and “holidays” I think are BS. New Years Eve day I was on Facebook, went on a rant about what was going on in my life and I put down what I was going to do to change it. So far, so good. My first thing is “stop spending 8 hours a day on RUclips” second thing stop procrastinating! My best procrastination is “it’s late in the day, I’ll do it tomorrow”. Anyone else use that one? Only 3 days into the year and the only thing I’ve put off is going to my storage and getting somethings. It was raining all day, ain’t doing it in the rain.

    Ah... you are right.
    I have been wanting to learn how to sing for years but money was a problem and then the pandemic hit. The past couple of years I could have started but I don't know what's stopping me. The money? I do have it but it is still so expensive to go get classes... And I am unfortunately not one of those people who can just open RUclips and learn skills, I need appointments so I go learn, a person guiding me. It has become a part of me to want to do it. Let's see if I manage this year.
    I just sent an e-mail to ask for an appointment and I am gonna ask somewhere else.
    Thanks for this.

    I love this particular subject BIG TIME and I've been saying this my entire life even when I was a young teenager. Like you, I simply see an issue or situation I feel I need to change, I just set my mind to it and do it. I make a list of things I see that needs to be done every week. I look at the list every day and attempt to get 3 of the most important things on the list each day and I'm satisfied if I get one done. That's a pretty simple system as most of us including myself usually line up more tasks than can be accomplished in one day. Of course there are some things on the list I'm aware will take at least a week, but yeah, those are pretty obvious. Thanks for this one. I love your channel and I'm glad I stumbled on it. Your delivery is great

    Great Point!! Why this time of year? Fiscal years are from July to July. Don't complain about your life; just make an effort to fix what ya don't like about it. Life would be mind-numbing is everything was perfect.
