I agree,I've mentioned this in another reactors comment section, the fact that he only just made it in time to come in with that fill with the other musicians, didn't even have time to get comfortable on the drum seat.I'm a drummer myself and I have to take a second to settle myself on the seat.

    • @Otterbruce

Yeah I love how he's incorporated a lil bit of theater to tell a story with this song as it slowly builds. I love it when artists improve their own song by listening to their band mates. You can tell how tightly performed they played this, no telling how many 1000's of times they've played it and improved it.

The smiles on both of your faces said it all. Phil Collins is a giant talent. He did the soundtrack for Disney's Tarzan. You might want to check some of that material out. It's pretty amazing. Aside from that there is also a live version of a song called Abacab, from when he was still in Genesis and it's fire.

When Genesis started out in England in the late 60's/early 70's, they were a weird band that wrote very complicated musical pieces based on fantasy... Peter Gabriel was the lead singer - he would dress up in costumes or as weird characters on stage... Phil Collins joined as their drummer in the early 70's and would also contribute backing vocals.
In 1975, Peter Gabriel quit the band, and Genesis couldn't find a replacement vocalist while writing and recording their album "A Trick of the tail"... Finally, Phil Collins agreed to try record vocals for the album, and it worked... That record outsold all the previous Genesis albums.
In 1979, Phil Collins went thru a painful separation & divorce from his 1st wife Andrea... he was inspired to write a whole batch of songs about his personal heartbreak (some were on the 1980 album 'Duke' by Genesis) that he recorded and played most of the instruments on his debut solo album 'Face value' in 1981. 'In the air tonight' was a huge hit (It was directed at his ex-wife) and 'Face value' actually outsold both the albums 'Duke' (1980) and 'Abacab' (1981) by Genesis. Phil Collins' solo records outsold his Genesis albums in the 80's... but he did both for years until 1993. To this day, Phil Collins remains close to Genesis members Mike Rutherford (guitar, bass) & Tony Banks (keyboards)
Genesis recorded the album 'Calling all stations' in 1997 w/ singer Ray Wilson, but it didn't work... Phil Collins returned to Genesis in 1999 to re-record a track for a 'Greatest hits' album... then a Genesis tour in 2007... He just did a US tour w/ Genesis in 2021 (Likely his last, due to his health problems)

You should go to a live concert. There is nothing like it. The atmosphere is electric. The best concerts build up the anticipation. That’s why a lot of artists start late. Music will be playing. Setting the mood. The lights will go out. The band will start playing without the the lead singer being there. They will play an extended intro to get the audience hyped. Then the lead singer will appear, the lights will flash on brightly and the song will begin. It’s a total vibe. Phil was a drummer for his earlier band Genesis.
He also wrote the lyrics and could also play keyboards.Along with a fantastic light show, the music just washes over you. I highly recommend you see as many live shows as you can.

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son is on the Domino tour with Genesis currently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

Its that chord on the guitar at the start that gives me goosebumps. And we get the drums later. F***KING WOW.

I'm 46 and love this song. This live version is such a better version than the album version. And the original was a massive hit back then in the 80's. Infact this song was the soundtrack for a hit TV show called 'Miami Vice'. He's played this song so many times with his group, and the song has matured to that awesome version you heard. And not to mention he was an alcoholic for many years. Hard to imagine that his wonderful talent shined through the abuse he was putting his body through. It has taken a toll on his body sadly to report. Phil can no longer play the drums and his voice does struggle when he sings. But he does sing on a reduced tour when he can prior to the pandemic. This was a pleasure to hear you appreciate this song as well. Great music is always timeless!

I absolutely love several things about this reaction. One of them is her smile throughout the reaction. It makes you think she is really enjoying it.
This one is more of a general: I really enjoy in this reaction when people aren't aware that Phil Collins is a drummer and then that drum intro comes in. Watching the reaction is great because people don't expect it.
Phil Collins just performed his last show ever because of health problems. He physically isn't able to play the drums anymore.

Such a long slow entro that you want to scream, GO! But he has ahold of you and just adds suspense, more layers until he sings. And then more layers of sound until BAM, he hits it and you are toast.

There are so many musical hooks in this - the first full organ sound, the percussive beat with no drums, the guitar chord, the high guitar riff, solid bass riff from the master Leland Sklar, the electronic voiceover and then the drum drop. THAT Drum Drop!
And all done live ..... Dear God.

Phil Collins is the GOAT! Not sure if anyone suggested, but watch Godsmack’s Drum Battle. The lead singer used to play drums and he and the drummer do a Drum Duo/Drum battle. I love seeing them in concert for the drum battle especially 💕

IMPORTANT I'm just adding a few cents.
WATCH: Not just this concert footage but also the scene from Miami Vice.
This 'was' supposed to be Collins last tour (it wasn't).
Phil's concert piece was stunning visually & musically watching him perform. Seeing the massive crowd is a jolt bringing in the love/anticipated emotion for supposedly his farewell tour.
No that wasn't the introduction to his song. Many as you know, musicians/singers create add suspense to the intro so audience is unsure what's going to be played & aids in staging time gives the artist(s) time to get readied to go out. They also use lighting to hype up the suspense for the entrance. Right when Collins steps out is where the original song does begin.

Collins is a percussionist. There's a lot of percussion you may not realize are present (another drum set, cymbals, congas, & timbale). Most likely he played all the percussion laying the tracks creating the sounds in the studio & had musicians play live.
Collins didn't just play with Genesis the rock band as drummer, then drummer/soloist (when is crazy to sing/drum), he toured as a soloist & was known to have more percussion accompanying him. Additionally, he's did stage band too (Pick Up the Pieces). What I also will state, used synthesizers when were in the infancy stage. Although widely used, there wasn't always experimentation he did in his music background. Sadly, he's had hearing loss & issues with nerves/tendonitis & spinal issues. The last tour just completed, but he won't be drumming. His son did it for him & he mostly sat in a chair.

    Percussionist
Started drumming at an early age. He attended a Fame-like school in England which also strengthened his voice. During time got into movies & musicals.

Graduated he answered a tryout for Genesis. He got fame being a professional drummer/backup vocalist for the rock group Genesis. Peter Gabriel was the lead then left the group to solo. Many may not know but Collins/Gabriel have similar style voices.
Genesis had a large audition time looking to replace Garbriel. No one could fill in having a similar sound. Unknown, how group never heard Collins sing realized he had a similar style. They chose Collins & rest is history. That's exactly why he's amazing singing & is on the beat. He was a very good percussionist & he was what kept the group on beat. Keep in mind known for his drum solos while singing! This meant, he sang ALL the Genesis songs while playing drums! He then went on to do some solo work (still close to the band). This was not the first song, but it became one of his fans most popular song he sings as the result of the marketing from the show. Using as a mix came later.
    Reason of song
The life of a musician can be hard on a marriage. He was married with 2 kids. Collins had been on a long tour & the distance helped erode his marriage. When returned home, his wife already had left w/ the kids & was in the process of divorcing him. He had a lot of downtime in-between tours & recording as well as dealing with this surprise. He was depressed, had constant arguments w/ soon to be ex-wife & terribly alone not used to being by himself. He wrote this song in fits of anger/depression & impulsivity.
There wasn't a plan or reason to the words it just came out of him. The drum solo he kept playing different drum fills on the takes, it was luck of the draw & timing they chose that one. Interesting his ex-wife was not amused about the song feeling uncomfortable he wrote it towards her & their private situation making it public. Now being it's a huge hit, no longer cares about that but the revenue streaming in.
This particular song was out prior to anything. It got added for filler for a TV pilot show (Miami Vice). It triggered such a strong reaction it started a trend where many current contemporary hits (including Rap) were incorporated into soundtracks for TV/movies to fit a mood.
The setup: TV show based out of 1980s neon Miami. Atmosphere; wealthy, pretty girls in bikinis, Latin influence, European popular vacation spots & pastel colors. Miami at that time was known for its vicious gangsters, crime/drugs coming in from South & Latin Americas.
We see various mixtures of characters in supporting roles (including James Olmos). It's 2 main leads together were a pairing of an odd couple. Crockett & Tubbs were undercover police in a drug task unit. Crockett's been undercover for a while, is a little loose & reckless. He recently lost a partner. He lives on a houseboat with his pet alligator Elvis. He drives a confiscated black 1972 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona, commonly known as the Ferrari Daytona Spyder. Tubbs is more uptight & more conscientious.
    Famous music scene:
It's around dusk, they've been waiting for a criminal meet w/ the 'big' guy, something happened & someone's been killed/injured & a person's been arrested. Minutes later, they get a phone call from one of their 'connections' to drive to a meeting point to exchange money for drugs. They have no clue if been found out & what to expect at the meeting site.
Crockett gets in to drive the Ferrari, while Tubbs sits in the passenger seat. The top is down. All the while this song is playing loudly in the background. It sets the tone of unease, suspense & nervousness. While driving, it turns to nighttime as the breeze goes through the car. Exception of a few words, they're silently passing busy streets becoming more industrialized & isolated.
    ruclips.net/video/-aMCzRj3Syg/видео.html
I saw the pilot. It blew my mind how one song just fit a scene. Over the years, I used to drive hundreds of miles to go home. I wore this out for about 5 years as I drove through the night. It fit the mood as I was driving through some not nice neighborhoods of the Bronx to get onto I-80 & go the 400 miles home. Hours driving miles in darkness being sometimes the only one on the road hit was the mood.
The show was also unique in that many pop singers appeared on the show. FYI:
Phil Collins, Sheena Easton, Glenn Frey, Gene Simmons, Leonard Cohen, Ted Nugent, Little Richie, Barbara Streisand, Frank Zappa, Willie Nelson, James Brown, Miles Davis, The Power Station, Isaac Hayes, Jan Hammer (wrote the Miami Vice theme).
    Lyrics:
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord
And I've been waiting for this moment, for all my life, oh lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord
Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend
But I don't know if you know who I am
Well, I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies
And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord, oh lord
    Well I remember, I remember don't worry
    How could I ever forget
It's the first time, the last time we ever met
But I know the reason why you keep this silence up
    No you don't fool me
The hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows
It's no stranger to you and me
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord
And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord, oh lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh lord, oh lord

Phil Collins is one of only three artists in the world to ever sell a over one million albums as a member of a group and to also sell over a million albums as a solo artist. He's a very talented singer, drummer and songwriter. Sadly he now has trouble playing the drums due to ill health.

Fun fact, few people know that the music here reflects his emotional swing and relief when all this crap is over(divorce)
he drives very hard, every look, facial expression does everything as much as he wants you to know, the whole build of this is his emotions
