I can read this was posted 2 years ago but.. As a white man who grew up with Phil Collins, and probably takes his music for granted, this video genuinely brought a tear to my eye. Not necessarily him on the drums but to see the reactions from people not of my tone. Bloody Brilliant. How many would do the same thing 2 years later?
Yessss!!!! I've been asking everyone on RUclips if they remember a scene from Miami Vice where this song plays there's a huge explosion in the background & no one has said yes, not yet, until you!! 💯✌️💕 TY for that. I feel redeemed 😁
Okay, come on, let's be real for a second. I may be too passionate about. Sorry, if I am. That's, for me, not nostalgic. But in fact even more, it is not 80s defining. This is just music defining. Hope, I did not insult anybody.
Watching younger generations finally discovering music and musicians it has been my privilege to have listened to for decades. Seeing their shock and realisation that music and musicians were far more talented back then and what they have today is just pale imitations
I've said this, too. The music, lyrics and voices were much better old school than the music of today. They sang with depth and if they sang right in front of you they would sound just as good. So sound or studio enhancement. Playing live sounds just as good and listening to the lyrics were like listening to literature. They made sense, some told stories, some were romantic without being nasty and some had morals to it. And seeing the younger generation loving it is a great thing.
I have listened to this song for 40 years and I still get goosebumps when he first hits the drums. It is amazing watching other peoples reactions that have never heard the song.
This is man that in his decades, alone and with Genesis, could pack every stadium anywhere and give you a two hour show that would leave you exhilarated, exhausted and horse from singing along. So glad to have been blessed to grow up in the 70's and 80's and to have seen this man numerous times in his prime!
I AM SO GLAD TO SEE YOU YOUNGSTERS DISCOVERING WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW. THAT THE MUSIC OF THE 60'S 70'S & 80'S WERE THE BEST EVER MADE AND INCREDIBLE ARTISTS THAT RECORDED THESE ICONIC SONGS! PHIL COLLINS IS ONE OF THE TOP TEN DRUMMERS OF ALL TIME.
You young people wounder why us older people talk about back in the day music? this is why. Please RESPECT THE PROCESS of how your music came to be. MUCH LOVE AND PEACE,
As a 50 year old man , it brings me to great smiles to see the youth react to all the great classics that I grew up with. I assure you , we older generation reacted the same , mesmerized as well. FYI , check out Phil's work with Genesis.
This is one of the most recognisable drum segments of all time, it highlights the power and importance of the drums, mostly overlooked by the traditional bands, but as important as any other instrument, and more is used correctly.
We really need to bring music appreciation classes back. That all these kids didn't know that Phil Collins is considered one of the best drummers ever is a crime in itself. But I'm glad to see so many starting to appreciate the 80's again.
This music was normal for us in 1981. What an awesome time to grow up. It is also heart warming to see all these people who did not grow up on music to hear this and react this way. I have watched all these people, and it is amazing to see them realize that the stuff on the radio, spotify, and all the rest that they listen to has not in fact been music. Just a bunch of mathematically strung together notes without real artistry. Also, there is a huge difference between a singer, and someone who is autotuned.
I was too also just literally shocked that these songs and artist were not known by everyone. I was a musician, lead rock and roll singer, keyboardist and songwriter. Graduated high school in 1981..our high school was 5 years and the music from 1977 to 1981 was real rock n roll . We had Aerosmith, Boston., 38 Special., Kiss., Queen, ACDC (my favorite), Van Halen,. Def Leopard. Cinderella. Guns and Roses,. Leonard Skynard. Eagles. John Cougar.Joan Jett. Pat Benatar. Fleetwood Mac., Rangers., ZZ Top, and the #1 band of all time..The Allman Brothers!! The list goes on and on. Special mention to KC and the Sunshine band and Kool and the Gang. I miss the brass instruments on stage..just makes you want to dance.
Us old guys love watching the young ones watch this video. Phil is a king, and this song is on repeat at my house and has been for over 30 yrs. Yep, we had great music that is still great!
I always love watching the "youngins" react to this video. Always makes me (as a 54yr) chuckle. Yep. Short, bald... and one HELL of a musician/entertainer.
I'm 76 years old and seeing your generation appreciate real music is refreshing. Musicians really had to work it back in the day and some still are. Led Zeppelin's live performance of Stairway to Heaven is epic. So is Procul Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody live (when Freddie Mercury was dying from Aids and STILL performing) was the epitome of Rock 'n Roll.
Made out my funeral music list .Procol Harum Whiter Shade of Pale is on list. Very non traditional list.im healthy just making it easier when my time comes.i enjoy music .also on my list is Crimson and Clover,Free Bird , Twilight Zone,Money , Spirit in the Sky And this song
Phil Collins is a musical genius. And I really enjoyed seeing the reactions from you young folks (I’m 68) just discovering his music. Keep up with the videos. The reactions from the commentators was fun to watch and listen to - honest and earnest. Nice group of folks. Thxjd
This is frickin PRICELESS !! I was actually at this live performance in Paris in 2004 and it is one of my life’s highlights. I first heard this song on Miami Vice in 1981 (ya, I’m old). Phil Collins was and still is a giant in the music industry. His music is amazing. This song alone shows what a genius he is.

watching all these reaction videos to all that fantastic music we grew up with makes you realize just how privileged we were back then to have all this awesome songs and musicians compared to today...
I feel like there’s always two levels mind blowing to this song for first time listeners: Listening to the studio version and then seeing the live performance and realizing he does the drums.
I agree, like you said, i bet a lot of people these days don't even realise that it's him playing the drums when they have only heard it and not watched it, i knew because obviously people of our generation remember it the first time around, either then or in the first few years after it came out, Does anyone remember that film with Phil Collins in called Buster - about the great train robbery, that's quite a good film.
@@Christobanistan yes, I'm a child of the 80s, where are you from if you don't mind me asking, I'm from the u.k. i was thinking maybe because Phil Collins is British/English so maybe it's a lot more known in the u.k that it's him playing the drums, than in other places/countries. Maybe because my mum listened to him while i was growing up in the 80s maybe that's the reason i knew about him, you know maybe if my mum hadn't listened to him i might not of known that it was him playing the drums.😊
Love all of your reactions. I knew he was going to blow your minds when he got on the drums! Glad you got a taste of what us "old folks" have enjoyed for years! LOL
Phil is a genius; the arrangement of this song; pretty eerie in the beginning; the blue lights, the hype, music & fans; these 2 dudes are crackin on the song; wait til the drum drop; priceless
GREAT reactions to an amazing classic performance! The different reactions were awesome! It's great that such music lives on like this. Great work by all!
He has an oscar and 7 grammys. Has sold over 100 million solo albums...250 million including when he recorded with Genesis. This was recorded in 1980 released in 81...he writes all his music...everything you hear, he composed. Gotta love this lyrical genius...he is by far my favorite artist of all time
OMG, I’ve heard this song a thousand times and it never fails to awe me! Huge fan of the man! When you watch and feel it you just want to be him banging on those drums as freakin hard and loud as you can! Everyone around you is playin air drums! I just finished breaking in my new Dynaudio speakers and had my son-in-law over and turned him on to Mr. Phil ( he is also a percussionist, accomplished pianist and freakin good bass player) . He went nuts!! Think I’ll go crank up some “Take Me Home”, really loud, right now!
I'm 54 years old, I was a teenager when this song just came out, and it has never gotten old, Phil Collins is one of my favorite performers of all times, solo but also with Genesis, great music from a great music era, now in my older years seen youngsters listening and appreciating the music that I grew up with reaffirms that good quality music endures time and Phil Collins is one of the best.
57, I share the same sentiments. Me and my bff would play this song over and over, sometimes putting that stereo needle in the sweet spot just to hear the drums, but also enjoying the prelude just as much.
After seeing this live version for the first time, I wished I was there. The whole performance was one long build up to those epic drums. And the energy level of the song just took off from there. Showmanship at it's finest!
Funny incident (wasn’t at the time but now is) I had an ex-boyfriend who at the time nearly broke up with me because I wouldn’t get out of the car to go into the grocery store until the drum part kicked in and the song ended. Whoa he was so pissed. He didn’t get it at all though, you don’t leave this song without listening to the powerful moment of Phil on drums; in the store we angry-shopped. He wasn’t the one for me. It has been almost 17 years since that incident but it is still one of the funniest things I ever did.
He did you a favor. Lol! You definitely made the right choice. I had an epiphany moment in high school the first time I heard B.B. King's "The Thrill is Gone." I rushed over to my first girlfriend's house so she could hear it and she literally laughed in my face, thinking I was trying to punk her. We didn't make it until the end of the month. It had nothing to do with the song but that was a great indicator that we wouldn't be compatible. I took my next girlfriend to see B.B. when he came to town and she thought it was one of the greatest things she had ever heard. We stayed together for several years. Not trying to knock people with different tastes. Everyone has their preferences. But certain things just can't be overlooked. Also, thanks for teaching me a new term: _angry-shopped_ ; )
I was at a Phil Collins concert. It was in the round at Van Andel. He came up from below the stage, in the very center. Then he played the first drum solo. It was freaking amazing.
The coolest man in the coolest performance ever! EVER!! I've watched this video countless times and I'll it even more times 🤩 The sound of my teenage years
Yes, the anticipation building is an art. Like Michael Jackson used to say, “You’ve got to let it simmer.” He would just stand there and people would be screaming. Then they would pass out once he moved or finally began to sing!
I had the pleasure of seeing Phil Collins in Genesis and then Phil Collins single artist in Atlanta!!! One of the most gifted musicians it have 20th century!! I miss him and those days so much!!
This is my absolute favorite song to watch reactions to. It is, in my opinion, one of the greatest songs ever performed live, and Phil Collins never disappointed in concert!
This is so cool to see. One of the greatest drummers still appreciated after 30+ years later. Phil was originally part of Genesis. Checkout some of there stuff if you liked this one. Some of the greats you just take for granted forgetting he's from another generation and there is 2 maybe 3 generations yet to discover them. Genesis was one of the greatest concerts I ever saw live.
Phil tore the place apart. His performance was over the top here. All the reaction from everyone that was playing his song here was priceless. Loved them all. ;-) ;-) ;-)
I could feel y’all’s reaction comin’ in the air tonight when I saw you were watching the live version! Priceless - lol. This song is such a time machine... I always feel like I need a cigarette after that beat drops - and I don’t even smoke! 😂
Thats what real musicians sound like. Him, w genesis, sting, w the police, u2 etc... its art, from the heart. Glad things are coming back around so the young ones can understand that a true musician is about the music first. Everything else like fame and forture are just substance after the fact. Not the other way around.
I’ve always loved this song. And this live perfomance is so passionate and powerful. It stirs up so many emotions every time I watch it. And seeing these reactions made me happy!
Phil Collins literally abuse them. He took them to climax, ecstasy, nirvana ... and then "the end", all of a sudden. 😊😁😊 Powerful Phil's drum set. OMG! 💪🏼💜
I'm with you i really understand how you really feel. I want those days back. There will never be times like this ever again the 80s and 90s was great times the generations now don't know have no clue. No more music like those times.today. Music today some is good but most of it is junk crap that called music but really isn't.
This compilation was AMAZING!! You all cracked me up and I Loved all of your reactions!! When you see us 40+ people air drumming in our car.... THIS is why!!!! 💥
Phil deserves all music and performance awards of the entire word. One of the best singer, songwriter and entertainer of the last decades. That´s it! 👍👍👍
Not a single cellphone in the crowd’s hands. Then we were there for nothing but the music in the moment. I’m no luddite, but it was something magical that following generations will never experience and don’t even know what they’re missing.
That moment when you realize not everyone knew that Phil Collins is a drummer. And a great one.
I loved their facial reactions.
That is what you call rock n roll.
Check out Black Sabbath War Pigs
I guarantee you that it will blow you away

In 1980 I was 12, so I am an 80s kid! This song transports me to another level...I still get goosebumps when I listen to it. Phil slays it!
Your collective reactions were a sight to behold and the whole show was live. No miming the vocals and musician's all live.
Still has to be the greatest introduction of an instrument into a song EVER EVER EVER. Smooth af the whole time and then BAM
He is singing this LIVE, folks. Now that’s talent.
This is my absolute favorite song to watch reactions to. It is, in my opinion, one of the greatest songs ever performed live, and Phil Collins never disappointed in concert!
The way Phil Collins weaves his voice in and out of every single instrument and every note is brilliantly brilliant!
watching those 2 clowns turn about face... priceless.. jamal was prepped though.. ;)
Yes Phil Collins is a drummer and actually regarded as one of the best ever
Phil tore the place apart. His performance was over the top here. All the reaction from everyone that was playing his song here was priceless. Loved them all. ;-) ;-) ;-)
Mike tyson singing it right before he lays alan out on the "The Hangover" is also memorable lol
These folks ALL felt what Phil was trying to get out there !!! Awesome 😎
Hahahaha I love it 💕
I could feel y’all’s reaction comin’ in the air tonight when I saw you were watching the live version!
Loved the reactions of all of them on one screen!
All of the reactions near the end. It's like an orgy. Yes folks, the 70's & 80's created some fantastic music.
I love seeing the youngins introduce themselves to music that makes you feel so hard you need a nap afterwards!!! Miss this
YESS.
He’s absolutely fabulous. Yes he’s a drummer. Originally for the group Genesis!!! Turn it up!!!
😊😁😊
Powerful Phil's drum set. OMG! 💪🏼💜
Phil Collins is why I became a drummer. 1st female snare 1986 in high school. Love this man. True legend in music9
Ok Marty Mcfly..Where's my Time Machine?? I'm homesick for the 80's. Whose coming with me??
I'm with you i really understand how you really feel. I want those days back. There will never be times like this ever again the 80s and 90s was great times the generations now don't know have no clue. No more music like those times.today. Music today some is good but most of it is junk crap that called music but really isn't.
Save me a seat
Phil is a legend. Period. ❤
I love to watch the reactions of people seeing this for the first time, knowing what's coming. He is the master of his craft.
This reaction video is BRILLIANTLY done. OMG!!!
So I bet those two boys won’t make fun of “In the Air” again! They’ve been seriously SCHOOLED!!

My favorite drm solo of all time, not to mention the AMAZING singing!
During a LIVE performance. That's how you sell 100+ million records.
He was the drummer in Genesis before going solo. The drum solo in this video is epic.
Goosebumps every time. Best reactions 🤣.
YES to answer the question, Phil Collins is a BEAST on his kit! Has been for the last 40+ years! We grew up with this, I'm proud to say! 😁👍🤘
This compilation was AMAZING!! You all cracked me up and I Loved all of your reactions!! When you see us 40+ people air drumming in our car.... THIS is why!!!! 💥
I wish I could watch this for the first time again...
Omg I love how they are all into this song and their reactions! Love it!
Masterpieces like this makes every human vulnerable.
I don't know anyone who doesn't get the uncontrollable urge to play air drums when listening to that song! A true battle hymn!!!
I forget not everyone knows that Phil is a drummer. It's so awesome to see that reaction. I guess Genesis was too long ago.. LOL
