    Phil Collins' song "In the Air Tonight" is about the anger, despair, and frustration Collins felt after divorcing his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli, in 1980. Collins wrote the song in 1981 for his debut solo album, Face Value, and released it as the lead single. The song's dark lyrics and moody drums reflect Collins' emotions, but he has said that the song's content doesn't represent anything specific. In a 2016 interview, Collins said, "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration".

      I saw an interview with Phil and they asked him what the song was about. That's what he said it was. I remember growing up when this song first came out. The story at the time was Phil was watching a guy who just sat there while a guy was drowning and didn't help. Later at his concert he saw the guy in the front row and this was what the song was about. It wasn't, but you know how things go around.

    • @martinarscott3524
      @martinarscott3524 27 дней назад

      That may be what he says publicly but I still have my doubts, they're very specific lyrics for a 'generalisation'....

    • @indycustommade3568
      @indycustommade3568 27 дней назад

      @@martinarscott3524 Why would he fabricate that kind of meaning? Just say it's what poped out of my head one evening. Why go into detail about a relationship if that's not what is was about. I read the lyrics again and what he said "its about the anger, despair, and frustration Collins felt after divorcing his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli, in 1980" sounds pretty legit to me. Drinking will do a lot with someone's psyche. I never wrote any songs but did do drugs in the '70s and had some wild stories. Just saying.

But their biggest success was after Peter Gabriel left with the album "Invisible Touch". I saw them on that tour and Phil Collins did a bit like the beginning of this video in that concert. It was cool. Also check out the video for Invisible Touch. It's cute. My favorite was/is Take Me Home. Love the song and the video. Leland has a YT channel worth checking out - he often plays his bass parts along with recorded music for which he was the bassist originally. He has talked about his bass guitars, some also legends with stories of their own. Lovely man, currently a member of The Immediate Family composed of members of the studio group The Section (1970's). Phil was going through a divorce from his wife who he caught cheating on him with another dude. He wrote this song as a kind of therapy from the whole emotional situation that he was going through at the time. Unfortunately Phil has had some physical health issues recently and he is not able to perform playing the drums but his son is a great drummer and he now plays father whenever he has a performance. Phil's voice has never change one tiny bit.

    I have watched this performance so many times and I get goosebumps every time he starts playing the drums. Phil Collins was the drummer for the band Genesis, they formed in Charterhouse School, Surrey, England in 1967. Phil Collins joined the band in 1970 and when Peter Gabriel, the frontman left in 1975, Collins took over lead vocals. Yes, I've read that Collins wrote this song after he and his first wife Andrea Bertorelli divorced, and the singer was haunted by the emotions that came rolling in afterward.

  • @stephenstrudwick8095
    @stephenstrudwick8095 Месяц назад +86

    Phil Collins claims he has “no idea” what any of the words of "In The Air Tonight" mean. According to Phil; “Obviously, having my wife leave me, and losing my two little ones, there was anger, bitterness, and hurt. Those emotions are in the song, but in an abstract way. I have no idea what 'coming in the air tonight' means-apart from an impending darkness, possibly.”
    Without any initial preparation, Collins had recorded himself singing freestyle to pour out his intense feelings of distress and heartbreak following his divorce from his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli. After listening back to these ad-libbed vocals, Collins reportedly wrote the lyrics down on a piece of stationery belonging to the interior decorator he says his wife left him for. Virtually all of the lyrics he wrote down made the finished version of “In the Air Tonight".
    The song gained significant popularity after Phil Collins performed it on the British program "Top of the Pops", where he famously brought a can of paint and a brush to symbolise his ex-wife's relationship with the interior decorator. Bertorelli has since disputed this claim, insisting that Collins's "short fuse and preference for arguing" were the real reasons for the divorce. Either way, it was an acrimonious split, and that filters into the sound of “In the Air Tonight.”
    The opening lines of "In The Ait Tonight" resonate with longing and anticipation:
    I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord
    And I’ve been waiting for this moment, for all my life, oh lord
    Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord
    I feel that these lines convey a sense of urgency and a longing for resolution, mirroring Collins’ own emotional journey.

    Phil Collins has explained that "In the Air Tonight" was written during a particularly turbulent period in his life, specifically his divorce from his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli. He has stated that the song's lyrics are not based on any specific event or story but rather reflect his feelings of anger, frustration, and heartbreak at the time. Collins has emphasized that the song's mysterious and haunting lyrics came from his emotional state during the divorce rather than any literal experience or incident.

    He says i know what you did but you don't know who i am
    So wipe the sm8le off your face
    He walked in on his wife and the guy going at it

    Kicked he's wife out and they had prenuptial with time limit
    So he didn't have to pay her either and never spoke to her again
    All done by lawyers and wrote the song so she knows why
    He did a interview on it
    The reason he sings the song all the time is to release the anger that builds up in him
    He's never forgotten and carries it with him all the time so its a copping mechanism for him
    So you are both right in parts
    To G seem a nice young lad well mannered hope he gets heaps of success in he's life path of choice

    "In the Air Tonight" is a mesmerizing song! In addition to the chilly synths, there are harsh, distorted chords-which Phil Collins liked to an “electric razor”-from guitarist Daryl Stuermer. And then there’s the iconic drum fill, which comes in quite late, just as the tension of the song reaches a breaking point.
    It helped that Collins cut the track with producer Hugh Padgham, a proven partner in creating mammoth drum sounds. While working on Peter Gabriel’s self-titled 1979 album, Collins and Padgham discovered that Phil’s drums sounded incredible when recorded through the microphone that engineers used to converse with musicians on the other side of the studio glass. Such mics utilize heavy compression, which makes loud sounds quiet and quiet sounds loud. Padgham also ran the drums through a “noise gate,” which artificially cuts off recorded sounds right after they start. So, "gated reverb" was born; the drum effect that would power “In the Air Tonight” and define pop music in the ’80s.

    Every time I watch this, when the drums are rising, before he touches them I get goosebumps and then he starts and goosebumps get bigger. Yes! Mike and the Mechanics was 3rd artist from Genesis.

    Lifelong Genesis fan. Phil is an icon in drumming history. I think they use this tune on Monday Night Football opening theme. Phil is one of the three most richest music stars ever. He sold a lot of records. With Genesis and his Solo albums.

    I read about Phil and his skill and devotion to music. I knew he was popular of course. This specific clip though is one of the best live performances I can say I have ever watched. If anything this is worth study to understand exactly how to rile a crowd. And yeah. Divorce. His own. I think some of the lyrics are describing how he felt during all that, like "waited for this moment all my life". Obviously he did not wait since birth to part ways with this person. It was just such a raw thing that it felt that way.

    This is Phil Collins first solo single after all the great Genisis years. I remember it from Miami Vice a few years later, which was revolutionary at the time for being the first TV show to use original artist soundtracks over covers done by others, which was much less expensive expensive for TV shows to use. It was also in the romance thriller movie Against All Odds for the sex scene in a cave, so @GFM17 got the lust vibes right, too. Please bring him back for other songs!

    Im 60, a drummer, and have been following Phil his entire life amd mine. I've played every song known to man and all his music to a million times. I've always known and been told when this song came out what the meaning was, and it wasn't devorce. I always heard Phil had a twin brother that drownd when they were young boys and didn't know how to swim to save his broher who also didn't know how to swim. They was a man close enough, watching, that Phil believed could had helped save his brother, but didn't even try or get involved. The song says, i saw with my own two eyes and so much more of course, but relisten to the 😊ye song with that in mind and it will blow ur mind!!

He's also on youtube & has killer stories to tell about his times playing & recording with greats. You should try to get an interview with him! He seems VERY down to earth & i think he'd do it. You got to listen to more of his music. He played every instrument that you know. He is awesome. Today, he has arthritis so bad he can't play that well. But his son plays for him.
