It's sad. He can nolonger hold his drumsticks. I saw a picture of him in his last concert ever with Genesis in Paris. Most painful to see this little old man sitting there in a chair with his cane... looking so helpless. I guess I hurt so bad for him because he and I are the same age, I use a cane when I walk but sometimes I have to use my upright walker and sometimes things get so bad that I have to use my mobility scooter. I don't know to what level his disabilities are but I feel for him. I was a guitar player but can't play anymore since most of the feeling is gone from my fingers.
To any musician, I once heard Ringo Starr say that musicians never retire. Music is in us, that's what we know that's what we do that's who/that's what we are and once we stop, we die. I'm 71 times around the sun and over 65 years of that has been make music on some level albeit that 6yo little kid teaching himself to play guitar (like Elvis then later The Beatles) to getting my degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in music. What I guess I'm trying to say is if you were a musician you probably still are a musician down deep inside so bring it out, do something for the Phil Collins' in the world who would if they could.

  • @artsilva

Phil was a drummer long before he was a vocalist/frontman/songwriter. He didn't become a frontman until 1975 when Peter Gabriel left the band (Genesis) where he then pulled double duty in the recording studio and when not singing on stage he was always behind the drum kit with his second live drummer Chester Thompson (also in this video).
During the 80's he was a busy man recording and touring with Genesis as well as his own [solo] band, and on top of that touring and recording with people like Robert Plant [of Led Zeppelin], Eric Clapton and many others as their drummer. His drumming was iconic, distinctive and in high demand by many collaborators in the industry.

When you talk about timing, Phil's drum kit is hidden below the stage and isn't raised till right before he got to them.

Phil Collins was also the drummer for the jazz fusion group 'Brand X' and the music they played was incredible.

Everytime I watch this video I cry my eyes out!!! Phil looks even better in his later years than when he was in his 20s. Brilliant artist !!

In this video Phil uses a device called a vocoder. I did not know of this tool until this video. Phil is such a talent!! Another part of this masterpiece that I love is how Phil walks all over the stage. YET, he arrives at his drum kit at the exact right time for his drum solo. TALENT!!!! People often forget he is a drummer!!! Dee your reaction to Phil sitting down behind those drums was priceless!! The way you smiled and perled up was great! Very cool lady!!! The audience is loving this! And they should be. I guess Phil is having some physical issues these days. t/he man is a gift from above! T/his video is great. I so enjoy you all channel. Phil also plays the keyboards. Such talent! Greatness......... Dee you were SO happy!! I can not blame you.

Primal. Such an epic performance! Literally takes your breath away. (the whole concert is a great vibe 2004 Paris) When you watch his live concerts Phil has incredible timing and loves to tease you about getting to the drums or the mic on time....he NEVER misses. Really. NEVER. amazing musician) Check out Phil from Genesis in the early '70s.....he is a total hippie!

I know I'm a little late to the party but Phil was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son is on the Domino tour with Genesis currently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

It transfers well on video. In person we got chills too. People like Collins, Gabriel, Bowie, Floyd--their shows are like operas or dramas. They're very theatrical.

Phil Collins started out as a drummer with Genesis back in late 60's to early 70's. Genesis had Peter Gabriel as lead singer while Phil was background vocals with some leads in few songs. Then Peter left the band for solo career. Genesis continues on with Phil until band broke up. Phil continued on with his solo career. Then he took a break to raise his family. Recently, Genesis regrouped for final tour. But Phil's son, Nic Collins doing drums. Phil has sit in a chair during each concert.

Happy to see that a drummer chose to react to this video. As you no doubt know, Phil Collins was a drummer way before he was ever a singer front man. In fact, he’s one of the greatest rock drummers in history. As for your reaction, I want to offer a good faith suggestion. If you look at all of the top reactors, they all make some pauses for comments throughout the video. Not every other second of course, but it’s better than sitting and watching someone looking at a video and not saying a thing. I think some people are afraid to pause because they think listeners will get annoyed. Like I say, the top reactors understand that the reality is most of your viewers have already seen the video and know the artist. What we are tuning in for is to see you react, and, the vast majority of us don’t want to have to wait until the very end. Just my two cents! I wish you well with future reactions.

    Dee & Wilburn,
Please note Phil's sense of timing. At first you think he is just out for a walk. But he gets to HIS drum kit at the exact correct time for his riff... Timing!!!! The man is a master... i hope Dee liked this.... I love it!!!!! Classic. He also plays the keyboards..... Phil is a master craftsman.

What's truly amazing about this song is how dark and truly unsettling the lyrics/themes are about and yet it's so entertainingly enjoyable not unlike say The Police's 'Every Breath You Take' (the stalker song) - Phil was in the midst of a bitter divorce and wrote this thru his pain/angst. And it shows. So well used on MIAMI VICE too. Great choice; reactions. The concert experience is akin to watching a high-wire act (breathless).

Don't know if you have done it already, but watch this entire concert when you can. It's his Paris show on the 2004 First Farewell Tour. It's available free on RUclips. Two hours of top shelf musicians and singers. As a drummer, Chod, the first 10 minutes of that concert is killer. Fantastic call and response drum session.

Hey you all!! Phil shows some of his talent in this one. Just some. Unless you have been living in a jungle somewhere, at 2:something you know what's next. Is the man focused or what? His timing in this classic is perfect. It looks like he is wandering around the set. BUT he gets to his drum kit at exactly the right time. Perfect..... Well Dee, when Phil sat down behind his drum kit you responded like I thought you would. Was this great OR what???? You smile says it ALL..... This song does draw out all kinds of feelings & emotions.

Quite simply the most epic mic drop drum riff of all time. Phil will ever be remembered for that. Thank goodness too. Most people only think of him making the Disney songs. But there is so much more too him than that. If you like his drumming, you should listen to him playing in a jazz fusion band called Brand X.

This is the song he wrote ..he called it a "love letter" to his ex-wife! lol It is so hard to play drums & sing at the same time! He makes it look so easy! He can still sing now....even in his 70's..but sadly cant paly the drums anymore. I think his son now plays the drums with the band.
