He was drummer then lead singer for Genesis. Then his own successful solo career. This was his first single from 1981. This live version is from recent years from a farewell tour.
ALL the people in that stadium KNEW what Phil was about to do and they were STILL blown away by it. It's so nice to see newcomers reacting to his music. Great reaction!
He was the drummer for the band Genesis. He is also the first lefthand drummer I have ever seen. The song was in the TV show Miami Vice. He also appeared on the show too.
Brother Phil ain't no joke man! He don't come to play. He comes to SLAY!😂 When you saw him walking back up and you said "oh, does he play the drums?" I bout lost it!😅 Great reaction! Thanks from Las Vegas! 👍
This is one of those performances, that no matter how many times I experience it.................sends chills all over me. And I'm old enough to remember when the song first came out. Phil Colins is a **master** at what he does.
Collins has always been an incredibly gifted artist, and always primarily as a drummer, often regarded as 1 of the top 25 of all time for his virtuoso of atypical time signatures, but whom could also sing, write, & produce. Seeing him live as a solo artist 2x let alone 1x with Genesis are easily still now in my early 50s a couple of the best concert shows I've ever attended.
I live in a world where this drum solo is the most necessary breakdown of all time, as is the guitar solo that builds up at the start of Don’t Stop Believing. Just need to nail down the Bass and Vocal Solos. It’s a bit tougher for those two.
Yeah, he sure is a legend. I can't understand why some people are surprised like "Is he goin' to play the drums?" when watching this performance. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that one of the world's best known drummers is going to play the drums.
You need to watch his live drum duet video also filmed during his farewell tour, it's amazing. He's one if the beat ever & his son is following in his footsteps.
Best drum solo ever I’ve watched this video so many times and could still listen to it all day.I remember when the song came out in 1979.Phil is just amazing.
Phil Collins began playing drums at five. He was drummer for the band Genesis, eventual lead singer of Genesis, solo career as singer, drummer and song writer. He is fabulous and I've seen him twice to my fortune.
I saw him on the last Genesis concert tour. I believe it will be his last. He was not in good physical health. He still sounded great but his days of being ambulatory are almost gone.
And that's how a rock star opens a show. Check out the videos for Another Day In Paradise, Sussudio, I Can't Dance, and many others, solo or with Genesis.
Oh my goodness! I AM SOOOOO OLD!! 😂 This was one of my favourites. My best friend and i used to lay on the floor with our ears to her parents huge speakers, listening to this on full blast! Neighbours banging on the wall! 😂😂 Great memories. Thanks for your reaction. Sending love from the UK 💕
Good evening always enjoy your channel .Enjoy the music you play. Going back to Good old days when we were young.we were spoiled with all the great classic music.
The live version, especially this one, gets a huge reaction. It's not so much he plays the drums, but he does it while singing and never misses a note or a beat.
Every time I hear this song, I picture Don Johnson and that incredible sports car on Miami Vice when they played the song during that intense scene. Awesome song Awesome artist!
The opening synth pads alone are the epitome of that Miami Vice atmospheric soundtrack style that made that show standout musically as much as it did visually
This is probably the greatest video to watch reactions to. No matter who you are or how old you are, the same reaction…..and believe me Phil Collins was this good live! This is one of the top 20 songs of my life. Once you know it, you just can’t trust anyone who doesn’t play the “air drums” during the solo. Lol
Quite a rabbit hole this opens with Phil, either his solo work or as a lead singer of Genesis or his duets with a various artists. Next I suggest reacting to the music videos for “I Can’t Dance” as the lead singer of Genesis or “Easy Lover” where he does a fun duet with Philip Bailey (of Earth, Wind and Fire). Some many great ones. Keep up the good work!
I literally never, EVER get tired of watching someone see this video for the first time. YES, my friend. He plays the drums. And, this is pretty much at the end of his drumming career (which is TRAGIC) because he now has so much pain that he can no longer hit the kit. It may be my imagination, but I feel like I can see the physical pain in his face when he picks up those sticks and starts slamming. This entire performance -- by everyone -- is legend, imho. And, the zen dude with the white beard is Leland Sklar, another musical legend. Put this one on loop, my guys.
The main reason(besides it being that it's a Phil Collins concert) that this was so massive, is because it was his farewell tour. It's people's last time to see this master of his craft perform live. Phil has increasing spinal problems and those problems have prevented him from doing the thing he most loves...play the drums. He was going through a horrible divorce proceeding when he wrote this song out of anger. His wife had cheated on him when he was out touring. I definitely recommend songs from Genesis. Especially Land Of Confusion. Phil did both singing and drums.
Actually this concert is from 2004 and was from the "First Final Tour" in a tongue-in-cheek mocking of musicians who say a tour will be their last but go on tour for years/decades to come. Phil was quite healthy in 2004 and had no intention of it being his last tour, as the tour name clearly suggests. He was a long time away from his current unfortunate health condition and did in fact tour up until a few years ago.
"In The Air of the Night" was played in an episode of the tv series Miami Vice. Donny Crockett had that same anger against a villain who killed someone close to him.😊
Beautiful song. I can relate to the words and the meaning behind them. I love your reactions from start to the stop when he started playing his drum kit and on to the very end. Phil is one of the best singer song writer and drummer of my generation.
You just witnessed greatness
I have always been a Phil Collins fan. I watch any reaction to this performance, It never gets old .
He was drummer then lead singer for Genesis. Then his own successful solo career. This was his first single from 1981. This live version is from recent years from a farewell tour.
He has a God-given talent when it comes to instruments he can play anything!
He is legend and this song od older then you😊
Checkout Genesis song is Mama. Phil’s vocals in that song is haunting ❤
Even when you know it's coming, that drum drop is a still a punch in the face.
Never gets old!
That's what Phil Collins said "draw them in and then punch them in the face!" 😂😂😂
@@CarniBarbieI was going to say the same.
Sadly his health in recent years has prevented him from playing the drums, but he has left one hell of a legacy.
He is hands down one of the TOP 5 Rock drummers of all time
...one of the top drummer's... period.
Genre does not count.
He literally (accidentally) created the sound that EVERYONE used after that. The echoy drum tone he has.
@@11DNA11 gated reverb
Who would you rank higher? Phil could play a 13/8 beat. For me top drummer
@@scraig9120 Neil Peart.......
Hey baby blessings from Toronto❤❤❤❤ I love your reactions and to be honest there are a few I rewatch❤❤❤❤
Rule #1 NEVER pause during the drum solo!

Favorite quote... "He play the Drums?" Loved it! And he plays the piano!
Funny you said “Night Rider”, this was featured in Miami Vice. Love it!

'He can play the drums?' just before one of the most iconic drum slaps drops. Love it and your perfect reaction!
Told ya dude. Epic.
Drums appeared, crowd cheered, they knew what was coming!
A masterpiece right here🤟❤️💯
Do not ever STOP his solo!
He was the drummer for the band Genesis. He is also the first lefthand drummer I have ever seen. The song was in the TV show Miami Vice. He also appeared on the show too.

Look up Genesis the group he started out with also no jacket required.
Great album!
You can't call yourself a musician if you don't know who Phil Collins is or that he was an elite drummer for years!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Just six months ago????? I grew up with Phil!!!! he shaped my life..the 80's will rule always!!!
1:15 funny how "music" evolves from this to just sticking usb drive IN
Phil was already 56 years old at the time of the concert. He is simply an absolutely exceptional talent.
This is one of those performances, that no matter how many times I experience it.................sends chills all over me. And I'm old enough to remember when the song first came out. Phil Colins is a **master** at what he does.
I agree!! I’m 68 and I love this song just as much now as I did when it first came out 👍👍👍👍👍
Sadly, because of his health issues and surgeries, he cannot play drums anymore. One of his sons plays the drums for Phil now.. Pray for Phil. x
Same here. I remember when the song came put. I was 15 and THAT drum fill!
Amen!!!

This is magicial. One of the Best ever
The timing of Phil in this is exceptional. Every step and breath was in anticipation of that moment when he approached the drums. Magic
I have a hard time believing he’s never heard this song before ?😮
Timing? Well, he was waiting for that moment all the song.🙂

Still to this day, no matter where I am or what I'm doing, when this song is playing I stop what I'm doing and wait for that epic drum break.
He was in the group genesis before going solo
One of the great lovemaking songs of our generation.
Saw him once (with Genesis) in 1979. And as "warming up" acts they had Joan Baez and Manfred Mann. Quite an experience 😀
After Peter Gabriel left Genesis they interviewed over 100 singers to take his place before deciding on their drummer, Phil Collins. Good choice.

That's me! I love watching people reacting to this song just to see their faces when that drum cadence kicks in.
That drum solo plus the vocals makes the song. My opinion obviously. The arrangement is a work of art!
The live version, especially this one, gets a huge reaction. It's not so much he plays the drums, but he does it while singing and never misses a note or a beat.
And he didn't inadvertently pause the vid at the "wrong" time! Double reactor bonus!
