- I'm really into all things classic Clapton, specifically from The Bluesbreakers though Cream, Blind Faith, and then Derek and the Dominos. Layla and Assorted Love Songs has some killer tunes on it, especially this one. Here's what I did to pay homage:

Oh, man. I’m in heaven. This has been my all time favorite song for the last three decades. Thanks so much for this arrangement.
Yay! Thanks Jimmy!
Yeah it's such a great song! This and Layla really stand out on that record. Man, the way Clapton shreds his voice one these - you can really tell he FEELS what he's singing about!
According to Wikipedia, this song was recorded before Duane joined the sessions so it is Clapton for all guitar parts. Awesome arrangement!
Aha! Hooray for wikipedia!
Thanks for the info!
Eric you have actually changed the way I hear music. Because you focus on melodies, and I LOVE melodies I find myself hearing all kinds of licks that are not in the songs but could work. Then I have to go hunting around to find the notes that make that lick come to life. IT was always something I was to lazy to do when I was younger, but i now find myself captivated by the process. Thanks for all you give us.
Kevin
Yeah! I'm all about the songs!
I like to bring in chords, fills, ear training, and musicality to my lessons. I never was much good at jaw-dropping "Holy cow what did that dude just play??" kinda licks :-)
Eric has some of the tastiest licks for classic tracks such as this E.C. tune. He always seems to capture the warmth, emotion, purity, soul and excitement with these arrangements. Another home run.
Thanks so much man! Those are exactly the qualities I go for! Warmth, simplicity, musicality, and most importantly, fun!
That little riff you played for the words I don't want to fade away sounded sweet
I’ve lost track of how many times the all time guitar greats from Don Felder to Marty Friedman stress “respect the chords your soloing over”. All the notes you for the solo are in the chords. These lessons are brilliant!
Yeah! A lot of the time, all you have to do is follow along and something pretty will happen! Easier said than done, though!
I think this is great. there are so many ways to assemble this and you found a new way to nail it. Thanks.
this is killer - great arrangement
You're making the songs sound better than the originals, Eric !
Thank you for this blasphemous praise!
I 've been watching these videos for a couple years. This is the best. Genius.
Dude thanks so much John!
This one combined really well with the Hendrix fills. Stay tuned, next week I've got a "Hendrix Doublestops on Gold Dust Woman" coming out :-)
Thanks Eric. I learned this awhile ago in C. It was nice to see in F with all the fancy lead work. You really are helping me learn music.
This thing is taking all my time. And BTW, the question you asked at the end, yes you accomplished it.
Everything good here. Choice of song, tone, technique, explanation. Thank you.
Thanks Paul!
I love this record, and had the idea to do a "what if Hendrix" thing to this killer tune a few months ago - I'm so glad it turned out better than I'd planned!
Eric, you are so good at voicing the lyrics with those Hendrix double stops. It’s such a pleasure to learn and it helps teach the full scope of the song. I get so pumped to learn these arrangements 🤘🏻
Thanks Brian!
I know I say this every time, but you continually blow my mind with your fantastic playing. I've played the rhythm part and solo to this awesome tune for years, and now a new challenge. Many thanks!
It’s such a great tune!
And now we’ve got a new way to combine influences and play with it - win win!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Finally getting it down after working on it over the weekend, and man, does it take playing BBB to a new level. Inspired me to work on double-stop fills over a looped chord progression. Just gotta keep chipping away!
Eric this is just great, I am coming back to it after having to step away from it for a minute. I learned so much watching the first half, this way sounds killer and teaches us “intermediate” (but not too skilled) a great deal. Thanks for your work on it!
Thanks Jason!
You’re such a boss, the guitar teacher I never had
I think you picked a winner, and all your contributions were perfect!
Thanks so much!
It’s such a great song - all I had to do was dress it up a little 🤙🎵
Beautiful execution
Talent and Taste....a great combination.
Thanks B! You’re very kind!
Thank you, thank you & thank you! This is my alltime fav-song and I was recording it a while ago... but since my singing voice is not the best and definitively not suitable, I stopped my project...
You gave me a second chance in learning the whole (vocal-)part on guitar and therefore finish my recording!!! I appreciate it more than any words could say... so: Greetings & best wishes from a new fan from Hamburg, Germany
Philip :-)
PS: There is a little fun-fact - I own the exactly same model (Fender 50s Classic Lacquer in 2TSB) and I will use THAT model in honor of your great video-lesson!!!
Yay! I have friends in Hamburg!
@@EricHaugenGuitar For sure! If you ever happen to visit Hamburg, just let me know! 😄
Until that I am looking forward for your further content! Keep on bluesin', my friend!
And stay safe!!! 😊
Before the tutorial part, I tried to play it your way and ended up with a perfect 'maybe i'm amazed' thingy... seriously, loved your interpretation and everything about it. im crazy about the song, the album, bought a sheet book 17 years ago to learn this song and to this day never felt comfortable playing it, never felt quite right... i'll give it another go now, after the tutorial... cheers from brazil!
if you were ever to put out a full 'Layla and Assorted Love Songs' by Eric Haugen, I'd name my first born Eric. (Unfair because I already did this, due to Slowhand, but still.. I could hone it your way!)
Hello my Brazilian brother! I love Jobim btw
"Maybe I'm Amazed" would be a cool one to arrange also - thanks for the idea! I'm actually working on a version on "Jet" as we speak!
Ha good name choice!
One of these days I'm gonna get the licensing to all my best arrangements and record them at a proper studio - it would be cool to have an "Eric's Greatest RUclips Hits" album ;-)
That guitar is beautiful, man! Instantly fell in love with it.
This is so beautiful Eric. I love how you describe the chords and structures you’re playing across. Thanks for adding that. One day I hope to have this understanding.
Thanks man!
Yeah - it's all about CAGED chord structures and fills! That, plus some ear training skills to find the melody :-)
And many many hours of relaxed, meditative practice!
At last someone that plays the fucking song...and more!...excellent and thank the lord no backing track of the song in full as a prop!
Thanks Martyn!
I like to make my own backing tracks - I feel like it makes the intro more special, and gives me a chance to play around in my home studio :-)
Very nice lesson. There is a lot of things to learn, and it’s very pleasant to play. It seems easy when play, but much more less when I try to play...
Greetings from France
Fantastic arrangement of a wonderful song. I am a Tim Pierce clone and have been following him for five years, however, you appear to have magic in your pocket as well. Thank you!
Tim is great! A real classy fellow!
Thanks for checking out my take on the CAGED doublestop thing - it's such a great way to navigate the fretboard!
Why are double stops so useful and musical. I swear whenever you incorporate them into your arrangements it's so hauntingly beautiful and melodic.
Thanks Stephen!
They're magic! It's so crazy how much bigger it makes a melody sound if it's 2 notes instead of 1!
Never heard of you before, but this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much for giving us all access to this wonderful piece of music.
Thanks!
I like to do doublestop arrangements of my favorite classic songs - it’s a great way to work on CAGED shapes in a musical context!
I’ve heard several arrangements, this is just cool!
I love your videos. You and I have different styles but I love how you approach this stuff, so I try to emulate and it makes me a better at what I do. Kind of pries open my brain.
Thanks Dustin!
It’s all about combining the chords, melody, and a fill or two into a medium difficult contraption ⚙️
That's a really, really good guitar arrangement.
It is so very Hendrix meets the Beatles, meets Clapton. Lovely transcription and how you grab that melody and make it sing on the guitar is quite beautiful. This is the first lesson i have seen where you are playing a Strat. Love this lesson, thanks for doing this.
Thanks Kriston!
Hi Eric, very very very very nice.
You said that e,b and g strings are the 9th fret was A maj 7, I was thinking of it as c# minor. So c# minor plus an A is A maj 7. This rabbit hole keeps getting deeper .
You really are the king of RUclips guitar teachers.
Many thanks Karl
Oh yeah there's you've stumbled onto an interesting occurrence - every 7th chord is really two chords smashed together.
For example, Cma7 is C and Em - C E G B - If you only play the C E G it's C. Or if you only play E G B it's Em. But together, it's a new thing! And it keeps going if you add C E G B D!
And on and on and on!
@@EricHaugenGuitar ,
Thanks Eric, but what does adding the D make it/ able to change into?
Many many many thanks Karl
aha ! That makes it into a Cma9!
Or, a C, Em, and G chord all at the same time!
@@EricHaugenGuitar, thanks Eric your a gentleman and a scholar
I got into country music because of Shania Twain...and now I love listening to the melody and the beautiful sound of the guitar...
Just saying her name makes me sing: 🎵"Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" - she's so great.
I always enjoy new uploads. You are a fantastic teacher!
Thanks David!
This is such a great song to work on - perfect for Hendrix fills!
Beautiful
Yep. That’s “what you accomplished!” Great take on a Clapton classic.
Thanks man!
I think I got the interesting:difficult ratio just right on this one - not too tough, but still with good feeling-ness :-)
Perfect timing too. I’m collaborating with a friend of mine on an upcoming Clapton tribute program at my local library (aka my day job). We’re still working up a set list. Definitely going to push for this tune!
The wind cries Georgia! As always, your great taste really shines.
ha ha ha perfect!
Beautiful, thanks
That was some really nice work. Way to go Eric
Thanks buddy!
I always loved this track
Great lesson. Thank you so much. I have been trying to figure this out for the last week or so. I think some of this is done with Duane's slide. I tried to play it normally, but if you use your hand like a slide it seems to make sense. I think Duane did most of the heavy lifting on the solo and fills during the song. Some of the pull offs, I think are Duane's super accurate slide work. I tried it in open E and it seems to make sense with a slide. Plus, remember, he alternated with his coracidin bottle and his fingers right through the middle of his playing. He lived and slept with his guitar and was peaking in style and would pass on too soon when this was recorded.
But this was still a great tutorial. Thanks again. I will surely try to learn it like you play it. The way you explain it makes so much sense.
Yeah! Rest in Power, Duane!
Intresting opinion. It would be more interesting if Duane had actually played a note on this song. Well, he didn't. It's all Eric Clapton, Duane was not yet there. Same with I Looked Away and Keep on growing.
Awesome lesson Eric. I literally was just thinking of working on this song. Amazingly timely. You play so many of my favorite artists music. You da man!
Thanks Brian!
We must both have excellent taste! This tune is leading me down a rabbit hole of other great walk-down chord progression classics like "Whiter Shade of Pale" and "All The Young Dudes."
@@EricHaugenGuitar yes please, to both, especially the former
Damn. LOVED this. I’ve got the same Strat too! Owned mine since 2006
I learnt so much in this one lesson! Thanks Eric.
That makes me so happy to hear!
Seeing how to connect chords, melodies, and fills is where it’s at!
sounds classy
newly discovered ... gonna learn this! Great lesson Eric!
Thanks Phil!
Too good not to comment! Awesome job man! Very inspiring!
Thanks Joey!
hey fellow peeps that love this channel like I do - consider giving the dude a buck or two on Patreon. we all know that we can't find a teacher like this locally. I paid 30ish bucks for 30 minutes for years from a guy that just wanted me to play a I V vi IV progression for him to solo over. I paid money to be his crappy loop pedal and wasn't even shown the CAGED theory (he probably didn't know it). Anyways, I just wanted to throw it out there... I signed up and it's good karma ;)
Thanks so much for your support my man!
Yeah, it's often frustrating for guitar students as well as good guitar teachers that there's so many out there who are not really qualified to teach!
You gotta have empathy, patience, and a strong desire to make sense of things in a way that helps people out!
You accomplished what you set out to do. Great arrangement. Sounds sweet too. 👍
Thanks Greg!
Is it blasphemy to say I like this song more than "Layla"?
Oh yeah that was awesome Eric you are making that Strat sing so beautiful love it. Gave me some work for the weekend my brother won’t rest till I get this . Thanks again ✌🏻
It’s gonna be a fun weekend!
I like the pace of this arrangement - I think I did a good job of keeping it interesting and soulful, with nothing really that hard to execute ☑️
This is a great arrangement of a song I love. Very tasteful!
Thanks Stephen!
This is such a great tune - it really was just a matter of making sure I didn't overdo it with the Hendrixy bits :-)
This just another EH amazing arrangement.... Blown away 👍👍
Thanks so much Steve!
This one really came out pretty good - soulful, and not too tough to play 🤙🎵
So great - thank you man!!!!
That's what I'm talking about. Nice. That's really nice.
Thanks man!
This was a really fun one to put together - I love that key change in the chorus!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Thanks for the music, Eric. This is one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite guitarists/singers while playing with my favorite Clapton band. What a shame we didn't get to see Duane and EC play live.
Wow,. Brilliant arrangement man!
Thanks Bill!
Very nice rendering, I always found this to be one of his most soulful songs, it is actually simply played on the album, lots of vocal but your guitar is nice.
Thanks Michael! Yeah - Clapton’s songwriting was really special at that time!
Fantastic job this is absolutely amazing. I hardly ever comment but this is definitely comment worthy
Thanks so much Ada!
When a song is this good, I feel like all I have to do is not mess it up :-)
Keep it simple, pure, and as soulful as possible!
Nice take on this. Very well explained breakdown. I've always wondered if Whitlock wrote the chordings considering the inversions stray so far from the straight blues or power blues riff base of most of Claptons material. Having been weened on his playing and a life long fan I think this may have been his most delicate and tasteful playing. Also as said prior, this was all Eric, no Duane.
Indeed that's quite possible! Admittedly I didn't to all my research before I filmed this - too busy noodling with my strat :-)
Great lesson! More Derek and the Dominos!
Thanks Ryan!
Yeah I should do some more stuff off that record!
Excellent lesson! Funny that no one ever talks about the Little Wing cover on that album. It's my favorite version.
Oh yeah that’s a great version! The harmonies - so epic!
I am not a huge fan of that version, there is something about it, Bobby Whitlock over sings on it I think
Amazing that double stops add a whole different feel to anything, I guess that Hendrix guy was pretty good huh?
Yeah! He is forever the man!
Great Playing. I think you are thinking of when George. when moves to A maj in Something.
Damn that was really good. Thanks for the ideas.
My pleasure!
It's amazing how the Hendrix doublestops can adapt to just about any of our favorite songs!
SICK
lovely stuff
Thanks Dave! What a classic 🥇
Brilliant!
Thanks Derek!
Great job! Thanks Eric(s) always loved that song.. the ‘I don’t want to fade away’ line gets you every time. Are you going to do blind faith again?- your bit from ‘had to cry today’ was excellent.
Yeah! So soulful!
Good call on the Blind Faith revisit - I should work out some of that, or some of the Cream stuff!
Quite cool, definitely digging into this lesson...
Thanks Walt!
As you can see, it’s all CAGED pentatonics - so useful!
Best friggin song/style selections EVERY TIME without fail!! Thank you for being the anti-blues/metal wank player the youtube guitar world needs, baller.
Thanks Alex! We must both have excellent taste!
I have nothing against metal or blues wanking personally - if that's what makes people happy then I'm good with it. But for me, it's the SONG, that's the thing. The melody, the lyric, the arrangement, the recording - that's what I really love.
Theres a documentary showing the house where Layla was recorded, and in the background, from the house, was Clapton working on this lick BEFORE he “had it.”
Well played, as usual!
Thanks so much Doug!
This one came together pretty smoothly - once I figured out how to place the "I don't wanna fade away" part it was all gravy from there :-)
Very, very, very nice arrangement geared to an instrumental only style rendition...which is nice, capturing all the tone, bends, and twangy flavors that Clapton infused in the Derek recording. I also have to wonder about your amp. From a distance, that darn thing looks a little like the old Sears origin Silvertone twin twelve model amp we owned about 55 years ago. It offered all kinds of built in distortion/overdrive, had oomph, two channels and was reasonable. Your amp, whatever it is, has similar frontal appearance and knobs/dials. Deja Vu to my spoiled youth. Keep on with your videos....wonderful content.
That IS your old amp!
It's a '64 Silvertone 1484 Twin Twelve model - I use it in a good bit of my other vids. Cool old amp!
Every video this guy puts out is top notch. My playing has actually been influenced alot from watching you. Thanks dude!
mma 1st Agree 100%. In my many years watching guitar videos on RUclips I’ve found _nobody_ better.
Wow thanks so much man! It makes me feel so good to know that my way of looking at things is so useful to other people out there in the guitar world!
You guys are so nice! Thanks Tommy!
Love this song...!
Yeah! Clapton's writing and singing at this phase in his career was so deep and soulful!
Eric Haugen completely agree... Layla and other Assorted Love Songs is a fantastic album.
Awesome!! Thank you
Thanks man!
This tune turned out to be a perfect platform for working on CAGED structures, doublestops, and fills!
Nice work
Love it!
Thanks Jason!
This is a fun one to work on! Soulful, and not too tricky to execute :-)

Halo my friend. Great. Thanks for sharing. All the best/Kjell 🎸 👍
Thanks Kjell! I dig your vids too btw! Especially the psychedelic one!
well done dude!
Thanks so much man!
Very cool video. It's always weird to me that folks complain about the CAGED system, because it makes everything simple.
Thanks man!
It’s funny, I wasn’t taught the CAGED system at music school. It’s something that I’ve come to over the years - everything fits inside it! Chords, inversions, scales, modes, 6ths, tuning, EVERYTHING!!!
@@EricHaugenGuitar ...and chord tones and their alterations... The only school I went to was GIT, many, many years ago. I don't remember them calling it the CAGED system, but they did teach the five positions and how they work throughout the fretboard. I think people conflate the CAGED system with a "scale fingering system", which is ridiculous. There are a few RUclips videos out there that have controversy about 3-note-per strings scales being "Better than CAGED", or "Don't Use CAGED, use 3-note-per-string". Of course this is all nonsense because the CAGED system is not a scale fingering system, and more importantly, 3-note-per-string scales exist within the very same five positions. When it comes right down to it, your video expresses that it is easy to make music on the guitar when you break it down into simple chunks that work in any key.
@@glguitarman Yeah I never really liked the 3nps method - seems like it forces you to move through 2 positions very often, and it isn't associated with chord shapes, so it's really hard for me to remember!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Yeah, 3nps is really only a way to visualize scale shapes, it isn't rooted in chords at all. Most important to the "no CAGED" crowd is that it's a "fingering system". It's certainly easy to learn the scale patterns this way, and sort of fly around quickly and aimlessly for no apparent reason.
Ive noticed you use that modern tweed Pro, I'd love to hear more of your thoughts about it if you don't mind..I am seriously thinking about getting one of those kits myself.
In general I love tweed circuits! Great cleans, lightweight, and look classic.
I don't worry about overdrive tones too much these days - I play my amps so quiet that all the overdrive comes from pedals - either my strymon deco, dusky hypatia, or some other thing.
I have a tweed deluxe too - it lives at my teaching office in town. It's great as well.
My main advice would be to think about the volume gigs you may be using it for, and get the tweed circuit that suits it. I don't have a tweed champ, tremolux, princeton, or harvard - but I bet those are all good candidates as well, depending on required volume :-)
Hi Eric, the tabs on your website were really helpful. May I ask you what effect pedals you use and on what set up you are playing? Thank you.

How about a breakdown of the song "Crow" from the "Runes EP" by that other Eric fellow?
Never heard of him! :-D
That would be a cool open E slide thing to talk about. Plus, if I remember correctly, I recorded that on a thinline tele while using banjo claws - BRIGHT!
Awesome!!!!!!

This is such a great song - all I had to do was try and do it justice :-)
Boy you did it 100% !!! ..well at least for me!! I’ll get the tab for sure. It’s been a long time that I ‘m looking for this!! Thanks and keep up the good work!!ale
Eric is the way you do the opening lick , 13 on the E and B down to 10 on the B your twist on the lick? I have a tab book which is not perfect but says to play the 13’s then 11 on the B, but they both sound fine. Is the 11 on the b a mistake? I found several things in it that book that have me stumped a bit...I can’t quite hear on the recording.
That is interesting! I just tried it with the 11 and it sounds fine as well!
I went with the 10 because it's an A, which is a chord tone of F. So theoretically that makes more sense, but as with all things rock, what "makes more sense" isn't necessarily what it's about!
Eric Haugen thanks for replying! I was thinking that it could be a typo OR, the guys may have been a little bit under the influence and thought it was a great idea as technically it sounds okay. But since you are right, maybe some chemicals made it seem like a good idea to them lol. It’s actually easier for me to just grab the 10th fret note, just more like a familiar feeling motion. Thanks very much !
That Strat looks delicious.
Thanks man!
The MIM Fender Lacquer finishes are gorgeous. Plus, that strat is nice a light!
Side 1, with Bell Bottom Blues, was was cut before Duane began recording with them.
Aha! Thanks for the info!
In this Clapton era I always equated him with "position 2" on the Strat. I may have to rethink that...
Is that neck and middle? Or bridge and middle? You may be right - it’s hard to tell from the recording, so I just went with trusty ol neck position because it’s my fave
@@EricHaugenGuitar Position 2 would be bridge and middle, "I Shot the Sheriff" is a good example.
You can never go wrong with just the neck - position 5!
Aha - the ol' "Sweet Home Alabama" setting 🇺🇸
What style of guitar is playing is this? Does it have a name? I want to learn this. Do you offer online lessons? I am from Southeast Asia. Thanks sir. Superb lesson.
I just call it "groove and fill" playing! Kinda a more rock way of chord soloing :-)
Never realized how tricky this song is.. Did you get a new camera?
I did! It’s fun having a room shot, and a fretboard close up too! Waaay more interesting to watch!
So are Hendrix double stops just a dyad of a major or minor chord and just hammering on and off notes of the scale of that chord (G! Major dyad hammer on g major notes?)
100%!
Mostly, the maneuvers are pentatonic (major or minor, depending on chord). Every so often they'll go full on chord-scale style
