I have seen Sue Foley perform live twice. She is off the charts phenomenal. Absolute doors blown off situations. Do not miss her performing live. Sensational.
This is an excellent blues lesson that, as Sue says, “grounds your playing.” Please do more lessons, Sue. You’re an excellent teacher. Sorry I missed your recent show in Philadelphia. Come back soon.
Just perfect Sue! Learning these from my Oklahoma Uncle Everett in 1966, and now keeping them fresh thanks to you at '71!! Great tutorial! I have some listening and sharing to do with my bandmates for our next blues gig!
That was so great. Ms Foley has real insight and understanding of the Blues and is a fine player too. Thank you for that Sue Foley and thank you Guitar World for the video.
Really great lesson! What a great player. I got to see her live with Deborah Coleman once, and really enjoyed it. I’ve heard these riffs so many times but never had someone show me them before
Sue Foley is just AWESOME! This was a Blue volume of lessons in under 10 minutes. And what a golden nugget, lid you don’t have an idea of where you’re going, you just get lost in solo land…” so very true.
Love the tone and feel of Sue Foley's music and guitar playing, particularly blues and flamenco/Andalusian (Spanish). With her -- as with the legendary BB King, Buddy, Guy, John Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins and the like -- "Less is More."
I remember seeing Sue playing with Albert Collins in Chicago must of been in the 80’s . Also saw Johnny Winter several times in that period in Chicago. I know longer live in that area but I have great memories of seeing many great blues players in Chicago. Shook hands with the great Albert King . Great memories.
It happens in these sort of places with these patterns. Thats it right there! That 😅profoundly summed it up for me. That was great! Thank You Sue! I’m now subscribed. Blessings!🙏❤️
I'd never sue Foley for sounding scaley, so don't you make me question my patterns... 😂 Great playing & lesson, sending you love & appreciation, Miss! 💜
Thank You Sue ! I Love 💞 This Lesson. 3 Reasons. Your Teaching Classic Blues links. And The Deep Pink Velvet Couch, Blue Velvet Curtains, Your Taste is Clothing. A Perfect Match for Your Pasiely Tele. Very Nice. ✨️⭐️✨️⭐️💜🕊
With a few clear words things are tying up beautifully. And that velvet growl of her lovely guitar seems to directly come out of the rich upholstery. This clip is my todays metaphor to 'total appeal'. Thankyou 😊
Blues, more so than any other genre is about feel more than rules - and this mindset around patterns helps so much about ignoring the rules that can make playing sound too scaley and build your own patterns. And this isn't just great for blues guitar, but any musical style and any instrument and build your own playing styles, rhythms and riffs that show your own musical personality. But you need to have the knowledge, skills and techniques that come with learning all the rules so you can instead build your own rules and patterns. Beethoven's 5th with the da da da daaaas are a great example of patterns in music and when the listener starts to recognise your patterns and be surprised by changes to the pattern they didn't predict is something studies have shown that listeners really positively respond to That's why this video is so good for budding musicians and songwriters
so so easy , i learned that years ago and more. it is simple. i like your vid. you are really good. I'm impressed. 6:19 i really dig those runs. Thank you.
Love your style for years. Brought my daughter to see you hear you at the Iridium a few years ago. Been working on your version of the Okie Dokie Stomp. After a looonnng time I’m prettygood at it
One of the reasons these sound so great is she is playing with her fingers and keeping the bass going with the thumb. This takes some skill to master. Also shoutout to the comment someone earlier made about acoustic blues and players like Lightning Hopkins playing these riffs.
Great lesson. I’ve heard RUclipsrs claim SRV started this lick but Sue Foley gives an interesting pedigree of this lick going back to muddy waters band and expanded on by Johnny Winter. As far as I know T Bone Walker first used those intervals in combining major and minor pentatonic patterns that feel different but it’s basically the same pattern. Her approach of laying it out in chord patterns actually gives some insight into how players derived these licks and moved the blues forward. If anybody did this earlier than T Bone I would like to know. Sue has always been a forward moving blues guitarist with authentic pedigree going back to the masters.
More content from this talented lady please, first time seeing her. She is fantastic.
I have seen Sue Foley perform live twice. She is off the charts phenomenal. Absolute doors blown off situations. Do not miss her performing live. Sensational.

“Grounded In The Blues” is a great title for a blues album/song.
